First, I must offer the disclaimer that none of the famed Cincinnati chili recipes are appetizing to me. However, we specifically sought out this restaurant because my family members who are native Cincinnati desperately wanted some Cincinnati style chili options while we were in town. They loved it. I, however, only ate french fries. The teenagers and adults who brought us here all ate some version of hot dog or phony conie. Little children ate chicken tenders. I tried some specialty french fries that he ended up having too much sauce for my liking. Our waitress was extremely welcoming. It was her first day, serving tables alone, and she did an excellent job. She and I learned together that coffee is being phased off of the menu. She was very kind to bring me hot water to drink once I could not get coffee. I've never dined in at Golden Star before so I learned that, even though the dining experience is similar to a restaurant experience where your order is taken while seated and food is delivered to your table, you still must get up and pay the tab at the cash register -- kind of like First Watch, except that we were able to seat ourselves. read more

Let me start by saying that I am NOT a Cincy native and it took me a minute to hop on the Cincinnati chili train. Where I grew up, chili was a chunky stew type soup and less of a pasta sauce. However, I am now hooked. While I thoroughly enjoy Skyline's chili, I had to give up eating beef roughly 6 years ago. Since Skyline doesn't make a vegetarian (or other protein) Cincinnati chili, I had to switch to Gold Star to get my fix. Their vegetarian chili is super good and still true Cincinnati chili. I think my favorite way to eat it might be on loaded french fries. The potato, cheese, and chili are super yummy together. I am always impressed with the service-- my orders are always accurate and the staff is always kind. I have not dined in, so I cannot speak to the ambiance or the dining room. The drive-thru line always moves quickly and there is a parking lot with ample parking. read more

I have to admit that normally we are fans of a different chili place, but we decided to try this one. The inside is bright and clean. We were greeted in a friendly manner immediately. Since I eat gluten free, I was ecstatic to see there is a chili salad there. It was most delicious! Our waitress was attentive and nice. We decided we wanted to try Cincinnati Chili, when in Rome and all that. Holy cow was it good. Spaghetti noodles topped with chili, beans, onions, and lots of cheddar cheese. Better make sure you're not getting charged more than the menu price. I ordered a kids spaghetti and cheese w fries, Apple juice, and vanilla cookies. I order this regularly. Clearly it says $3.29 but they're charging $5.50. Charging $2.00 for Apple juice that says it's included. The manager, Hannah, came out to see the menu and told me "sorry, it's bc of the remodel and there's nothing I can do.." Seriously? Odi, you need to tighten up you and your employees games. Why didn't you "upgrade" the menu prices if they went up? I feel bad I yelled at her but managers aren't helpless and they should have honored the menu price. I'm still in the fence in whether I prefer x-ways and coneys from Gold Star or the other chain that's uses our city's skyline for it's motif. They are both good, along with other independent Cincy chili restaurants, but I will frequently drive past a G. S. to get to a skyliner that father away. But tonight I succumbed to G.S.'s advertising and tried their 'new' burgers. Boy howdy! I selected a double bacon cheeseburger and it was the best burger I've ever had from a fast food joint. It was a bit on the pricy side at around $9.70, but every ingredient was super fresh and tasty (especially the bacon and thick slice of tomato) and it came with a side of equally fresh crinkle cut fries. This is a buck or two more than the big three burger places' top end combos, but well worth it. The burger was larger than expected, though the beef patties themselves are a bit on the thin side. The beef itself was delicious, seemingly cooked smash style. It was a good choice on my part to go with the double patty option. No wonder G.S. dropped the "Chili" from their name and is now just "Gold Star" to reflect their expanded menu. So is G.S. my favorite burger place now? Nope, they close too early (9pm Mon-Sat, 7pm in Sundays) for a night owl like me. And there's only one G.S. within 3.5 miles of my home, as opposed to seven of the skyliners, most of which have more expansive operating hours. But until the chili-only place starts making comparable burgers, Gold Star is going to be getting more of my business. Sorry for not taking pictures, but the burger and fries were scarfed down before thoughts of recording them even crossed my mind. read more

When I come home to Ohio there are a few local treats I have to indulge in: Ice Cream from Graters and UDF, A big boy sandwich from Frisch's, Pizza from Larosa, a steak sandwich from Cassano's and last but not least some Cincinnati cheese coneys! It has become a tradition for me and a opportunity for me to share these regional items with my Yankee boyfriend. They don't have hot dogs like Gold Star in the south so I made a beeline for this location as soon as I saw it. This location is clean and quick. The lone worker was friendly and fast. My hot dogs were fresh and fully loaded like I like them. Cheese coneys are so simple but when you don't have access to that sweet Cincinnati chili, you definitely appreciate it a little more when you are near a spot that has it. Don't go to this location on a Sunday Night. They list their closing time as 10p. Over the last couple of weeks, I have pulled up to the drive thru around 8-8:30p to find no one working it. It is dimly lit on the inside with no salesperson in sight. They should just close at 8p and list their hours as such. read more

I love gold star chili. They are a staple of my vacations especially anytime I travel anywhere near Ohio. This particular visit was kind of laughably bad (I laughed out loud at the server at one point) but the food was still good. It had been a long time since I had been to one of the locations in person and I asked for information about their sizes because the menu simply says "small, regular, and super." The servers response was "well... we have small... and regular... and then there's super, yeah". Oookaaaay.... then when I asked what that means she still wasn't particularly helpful. She said the kids meals came with fries, then she said they were out of fries. So then the choices were apple sauce or chips. I had one kid order apple sauce and the other order chips. She said they were actually out of apple sauce... so she asked if they wanted bbq or regular chips. Turns out, guess what... they were out of regular chips. 1 guess as to what happened when the kids picked their drinks too... It was a mess. But the chili was still pretty good and we still love going to gold star whenever we come through town. Hopefully it won't be 8 years again before we get back through. read more

I live in Texas, but my family is from Ohio. Every time we come visit, we eat Gold Star Chili just about everyday. Everything on the menu is delicious. The coneys, spaghetti, and chili cheese fries. According to the company website this location is to be open until 10pm. I arrived at 9:10. Waited 5 minutes in silence, only to pull around to see 4 different employees standing around. My review comes from the fact that the operating hours for the location are false. I attempted to go through the drive thru to see if the location was open or not and was ignored. I've been to about 20 gold star locations since realizing it's better than skyline. This location is my go-to spot. They load up the plates and bowls with ultra generous portions; the management and servers are kind and considerate and fun. They always have sports on the tv. If you are looking for the best 5 way in Cincinnati and top notch service this is the place to eat. read more

Im from Ohio but never got into chili on spaghetti until my best friend made go to gold star with her. I've been obsessed ever since! Now I don't even live in Ohio but when I come to visit my parents I ALWAYS stop at gold star at least once to get my fix. Then buy cans of chili to take back home. There aren't ANY places I can even get Cincinnati style chili and spaghetti so I have to make my Coney's and Ways at home. I'll eat the other brand in a pinch but gold star is home for me!
