It was that time of night on a Saturday & we were just out the cinema in search of some evening foodage. This end of Sauchiehall St certainly isn't short of take away options, that's not to say that quantity always equals quality...trying to sort the wheat from the chaf along this strip when sober is actually a lot more frustrating than it should be. Without the beer goggles on places I would normally happily stumble into with the post-beer munchies suddenly look a bit... well, just 'meh' or 'urgh' even. Yowch. So where to go...
A lot of places were creepily empty (I'm sure I saw a tumble weed in a few); not a good sign methinks. So further down Sauchiehall Street we go and the only place that is actually jumpin' more than a bunny on a trampoline is this place: The Codfather. Btw, full marks for puntastic name guys. Although it WOULD make more sense if this was a chippy... Nevertheless this place was clearly THE take away to be on a Saturday night. We ordered a 12" pepperoni pizza and chips & cheese (coz we is classy innit) and it was fairly reasonable in the gold coins department. Also we waited an acceptable and non-dubious amount of time for our food (if we are waiting no more than 10mins I do start to wonder...), service was okay & as we left the place started to get even busier. I have to say it appears very popular with the ladies of Glasgow...why, I do not know?
The food - I wasn't expecting much but I was rather pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality. The pizza was pretty good - just the right amount of everything & the tomato sauce wasn't too sweet or overpowering like it can be on some cheap pizzas. The chips & cheese were also really good - nicely cooked chips smothered in a tasty, cheesy melted cheese. Its annoying how many take away places put that awful white, tasteless 'cheese' stuff on things; it literally tastes of nothing! Bleurgh. This cheese was nice and cheesy and they weren't stingy with it either.
I wasn't ill the next day (always a bonus) so I have to say I would definitely go back to The Codfather again should I find myself hungry and in need of some filthy food when roaming the street they named Sauchiehall late at night. Boom! read more
