For me, visiting a McDonald's is never exactly a proud moment. It usually means I'm a) drunk, b)…read morehungover or c) suffering a momentary lapse of self control and ruining my most recent attempts to be healthy. We've all been there, I'm sure. Thing is, McDonald's actually is good for those things and if that's what you're after then there's no shame in that. This branch is especially handy in that it's open 24 hours. It also has a drive-thru attached, although I've never used that facility so I can't properly comment on it. In spite of being a small, drive-thru branch they still do all of the major offers (so if you get one of those vouchers for a big mac and fries for £1.99 then go ahead, they'll accept it) and they do all the standard UK menu items, including the specials as they come and go. Food-wise it's the same as any other McDonald's. They can alter your items if you have any particular requirements and they almost always have a few Big Macs and McChicken Sandwiches ready to go as you walk in. If not, they're still pretty quick. Less popular items, such as specials, salads and deli sandwiches take a bit longer, but I'm pretty sure that's true everywhere. You can expect really long queues around dinner time and long-ish queues at lunch time over the weekends. I've only ever once failed to get a seat, though. Plus, the staff are quick enough and clearing the queue and if there's a wait for fries (or if you've ordered something less popular) they'll tell you to go take a seat and will bring it to you when it's ready. The toilets are kept pretty clean and the staff do a decent job of clearing the tables whenever they get chance. The WiFi is free too, so I could even imagine people working here during quieter hours. One very important thing though - don't get the coffee. It's the worst I've ever tasted. Just don't.

The best pizza place in the West End? It's a difficult choice to make but there's a good chance…read morethat it's Little Italy. I'm sure most people would at least put it in their top 3. It's not an enormous restaurant. A large bar/service area takes up a lot of space, as does the pizza oven at the back and as suck the seats are kind of arranged all the way around the edges. Somehow though, whenever I've wanted to sit in, they have managed to find a space for me. They do pizza and pasta mostly, with a few other Italian favourites. The coffee is really good and the cake is the ideal thing to bring as a surprise in a take away box to a friend who needs cheering up. Trust me, it never fails. The pizza comes as slices (really squares) or three other standard sizes, starting at 10 inch and is cheese and tomato by default. There isn't really a menu of standard toppings like, for example, mushroom and proscuitto, red pepper and goats cheese, Hawaiian, Four Seasons, etc. Rather, they just have all imaginable toppings and you tell them which ones you'd like. This way you pay for the toppings you want based on the size of pizza you order, and every pizza is, in that sense, personalised. Once you've placed your order you're given a buzzer (regardless of whether you're sitting in or taking out) and when it goes off you head over to that pizza oven and the chef will hand it to you with or without freshly ground black pepper, according to your preference. The pizza is always good too. Always. The base is great and the toppings are reliably fresh and delicious. Sadly, the days are gone when a snapfax and £4 could get you a pizza and a can of soda but their still very fairly priced for the quality you can expect.

Feel Italian for the Day…read more Italian staff, Italian coffee, Italian pizza, Italian radio, Costco pastries? :-) But let's get serious here. This vibrant little shop is the Italian espresso bar personified. The coffee is perfect for your morning cappuccino, the focaccia's perfect for a quick lunch and the pizza's perfect for your tea (or since we're in The West End should I say dinner?) Tiramisu? That's another story. It's not always on offer, but when it is - I'M THERE! Word of note though - just stay away from the sugar bowls. I've seen licked spoons go where they ought not to. Luckily I don't take the white stuff :-)

I was pretttttty damn excited to get my jaws around some Pomme Frites, and made a visit on Sunday…read morenight. It was pretty quiet so we didn't have long to wait. Thanks to Leanne R's photo of the menu I'd already picked what I was going to have - garlic & parmesan seasoning with mango chutney sauce. As we had a bit of a drive home (maybe 20 minutes) I asked to have the sauce put in a wee tub which they happily did. Graeme also got a poke of fries and home we headed. I would say that the large portion is actually kind of small - a good serving for one person which is ok (although pricey at £2.75 for chips). We had lots of sauce in our wee tub so that was good. The chips themselves weren't very impressive and I'll admit I was really disappointed. The chips were a bit soft and pretty pale for chips that are meant to be twice cooked. When we'd ordered in the shop we only had to wait maybe two minutes so perhaps they weren't cooked fresh. They are pretty chunky for frites. The mayo was ok - I wouldn't say I could overly detect the mango chutney flavour though. Sadly, these didn't live up to expections. I've had some amazing Belgian fries and these didn't make the cut. I would definitely go back as I'm not sure if it was just new-opening issues but I will be a bit less excited next time.

In addition, these fries come in small, medium & large, which affects their prices.
