I was pretttttty damn excited to get my jaws around some Pomme Frites, and made a visit on Sunday night. It was pretty quiet so we didn't have long to wait. Thanks to Leanne R's photo of the menu I'd already picked what I was going to have - garlic & parmesan seasoning with mango chutney sauce. As we had a bit of a drive home (maybe 20 minutes) I asked to have the sauce put in a wee tub which they happily did. Graeme also got a poke of fries and home we headed. I would say that the large portion is actually kind of small - a good serving for one person which is ok (although pricey at £2.75 for chips). We had lots of sauce in our wee tub so that was good. The chips themselves weren't very impressive and I'll admit I was really disappointed. The chips were a bit soft and pretty pale for chips that are meant to be twice cooked. When we'd ordered in the shop we only had to wait maybe two minutes so perhaps they weren't cooked fresh. They are pretty chunky for frites. The mayo was ok - I wouldn't say I could overly detect the mango chutney flavour though. Sadly, these didn't live up to expections. I've had some amazing Belgian fries and these didn't make the cut. I would definitely go back as I'm not sure if it was just new-opening issues but I will be a bit less excited next time. read more

I'm actually really a fan of this place, although I don't get to go very often. The chips are a bit on the expensive side and the sauces are more expensive than I remember, but it's a really unique experience. There are chippies around the city but they mostly have all of the same chips and with the same sides. If nothing else, Pommes Frites is special. I've had garlic mayo, satay mayo, and other toppings I'd not be able to get elsewhere in Glasgow. The chips are honestly good. Maybe more on the expensive side than other places but I find it's worth it. I also like that they're open proper chippy hours and so I can get them after am otherwise busy night if I want to. By far my favorite Chipper in town! I can understand why some people may think it's on the pricier side, but I personally believe the quality makes it well worth it. In addition, these fries come in small, medium & large, which affects their prices. Well after a night out on the town I ended up here with a few friends from Liverpool that stayed over a few nights. I ordered the large cone with sauce & seasoning for a whopping £4.95. In some ways it is a false economy where you think that you are getting a large portion, but in reality you are not, the way cones are shaped means you are getting less a portion. What we had we're NOT home made chips and in fact where macains rustic fries cooked from frozen, I've worked in the food trade for over 20+ years and seen and tasted enough of them to know. A few weeks ago I spotted a new frontage appear on Sauchiehall Street for a new eating spot call Pommes Frites I was more than a little excited. Promising us fries with 20 different seasonings and 20 different sauces to choose from to customise them - I was a tizzy with anticipation. As you can imagine I raced down there opening day to try out these twice fried little bites of wonder. The inside can only be described as a wooden wonderland, there is a wooden huge counter which takes up most of the shop with wooden & exposed brick walls. The shop is quite small so during busy periods it will be a bit on the cramped side and with only 3 stools and a small ledge at the window this is definitely a take away. Once placing your order the servers make up your order by tossing your fries with the seasoning in a huge bowl to ensure they are all well coated. The fries are then served in a paper cone and smothered in the sauce of your choosing. On my first of many visits I choose the Garlic & Parmesan seasoning with the Mango Chutney Mayo - It was OMG good! The fries are big and twice fried to perfection, they are soft on the inside and crispy, crunchy perfection on the outside. The seasoning was perfect and the mayo was creamy and luxurious. A few words of warning - if you are in a big group they make up the orders one at a time so there could be a delay between your order coming out. The second thing to watch out for is that you get loads of sauce but remember to dig down to the lower fries to ensure that you aren't left with fries and no sauce - because the sauce is so good. Fantastic addition to Sauchiehall Street and I am already wondering what the polite length of time is to wait until my next visit. read more

I really do understand if you have reservations when you see the prices at Pommes Frites. You may think it's really expensive for "just chips" but let me assure you, these aren't "just chips". I very rarely go here and have these as a treat at the end of a night out if I do, so I don't grudge paying that bit extra for something I enjoy. You get to choose your seasoning and your mayo/ketchup to make it exactly to your tastes - and the list of choices is extensive! Their belgian fries are really tasty, crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle. My normal order is the garlic and parmesan seasoning topped with pesto mayo. They give you the option of sauce on the side or right on top and I always just get my sauce dolloped right on top. Messy, yummy goodness. Don't forget to grab that takeaway fork! Last night I decided to mix it up with some chipotle seasoning and mango chutney mayo. I was told "chipotle seasoning is really hot, you know?!" when I placed my order. I assured him that I love spice and can handle a lot of heat and the mango mayo would definitely cool it down a bit too. There was a lot of heat in the seasoning, but it was a really tasty heat, not the kind that just burns. It went amazing with the mango chutney mayo and if you're a fan of really flavoursome hot food then I'd recommend this combo. Definitely my favourite place on Suchiehall Street for a quick, super tasty grab and go bite to eat. read more

I've even here before. It is exactly as it says. You pick small, medium or large chips that is served in a cardboard cone. You get a and a flavoured mayo or other types of sauce that is an extra charge. I was different with my my choice today. Served with chipotle mayo, and chilli garlic seasoning. It was not what it was described as. The so called Chipotle mayo was actually mayonnaise mixed with cayenne pepper and Cajun spice and not that chipotle taste I know so well. And I'm sure there is Tabasco in there. The seasoning that was supposed to be chilli garlic, was just dried chilli flakes with not even an essence of garlic to be found, and with my in tune taste buds I know what I taste very well. This is the only bad experience I have had, all the other times have been great. ,ay be bring a can with you as their only cans are charged at £1.60 per can. The fact you could get a can i Of Pepsi throwback from one of the American candy stores for less is crazy. I can't fully judge the place as other times have been good. The wood design for the small size of this place makes things work. The eating surface has large holes that hold your chip cone securely. It's worth a visit to see for yourself, just this time was the bit and miss time. My mouth is still burning with the cayenne pepper. read more

Freaked out when I saw this as I am a fan of the location in NYC, and this place is almost identical in both the menu and decor. It turns out that the Manhattan one most likely copied, and this Pommes Frites is certainly cheaper, but I digress. A friend and I split the regular size with chipotle mayo and it made for the perfect post-02 show snack. I do prefer the way they give you the sauces in a separate container at home - here, the frites were a little hard to eat - but they tasted great and like I mentioned, were almost half the price as in NYC. With Pommes Frites there's no longer any need to to feel limited to salt and vinegar and ketchup when you fancy a poke of chips. Although the style of chip stays the same (no super skinny fries or super chunky chips here - it's somewhere in the middle) and the portion size choice is either small regular or large, the real fun starts with the seasonings and sauces. You then choose a seasoning and a sauce and tuck in. I'm more impressed with the range of seasonings than the range of sauces. Although both actually suit me fine, if you weren't a fan of mayo then you'd find the latter a bit uninspiring. They also have hot dogs available, they sell hot and cold drinks and if you've got room for desert they have waffles too. I choose the garlic and Parmesan fries which were great, salty, crunchy, and perfectly cooked. Plus, I love the garlic and Parmesan combo. I'd definitely come back to try some of the other options but I think it'll be a slightly less common treat. I visited Pommes Frites a couple of weeks ago, and I feel like I have just gotten over the shock and abuse my wallet took that particular evening. I could probably just write a two line review and say I bought a medium cone of chips for a whopping £5 and leave it at that, you'd probably get the picture, but I will do my best to describe this little fried potato takeaway. Yup people, fried potatoes. Probably the cheapest vegetable on Earth and cooked using the easiest and quickest cooking method there is. So when I heard the server ask me for £5 for my cone of chips I almost keeled over. Thankfully I took a deep breath, filled my lungs with oxygen, counted to 3 and handed over my fiver. In exchange I was presented my cardboard chip cone with cajun seasoning and lashings of BBQ sauce on top. Now there wasn't anything wrong per se' about the chips, and I do actually love chips (who doesn't?), but lets face facts guys, they are just fried potatoes. I'm sorry but I cannot get over paying £5 for a cone of chips. Seriously, has the world actually gone mad now??? Anyway, what sets Pommes Frites aside from other fried potato selling establishments is the variety of interesting seasonings and sauces they offer. However, a seasoning will set you back 30p (yup for some fancy salt and spices) and a saucy dip a staggering 60p. This is what really bumps the costs up. I cannot honestly comment on my cajun seasoning (apart from the fact it tasted very salty) because I found that the massive dollop of BBQ sauce dumped on top completely overpowered everything. This probably just compounded my rage at the time. Nonetheless, no matter how you dress it up, they are just chips. I mean, if they were the greatest chips in history I could 'almost' forgive the expense. If you are a chip connoisseur I would defo check out the chips at "The 78". For £2 they are probably the best in town (and they also serve free dips too). read more

I was a bit skeptical going into this place as to how good the chips would actually be. It's located down the student end of Sauchiehall Street (somewhere I don't usually go...) next to some dodgy-looking kebab shops but this is completely different to the bog standard offerings you'll find there. You can order two things here. Chips and hot dogs. Belgian chips and German hot dogs. The best type of each food. You choose the size of chips, what seasoning (30p) you may want for the chips and then can add a sauce too (60p). People objecting to sauce charges I can understand, but to me it just adds to its authenticity, as you will get charged a similar amount in Belgium. And the chips themselves are amazing! Literally the best chips I've had in Scotland. So crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, proper Belgian style. The chips are part cooked first and then when you make your order they are cooked again, till crisp, just like Belgium. The hot dog was pretty good too, but it's the chips that this place is all about. They aren't the cheapest but they also aren't that much dearer than the awful chips you'd find at Blue Lagoon, so do yourself a favour and check this place out! I am genuinely a little bit obsessed with Pommes Frites - to the point where I just got all the stamps on my Pommes Frites loyalty card which entitled me to double sauce and double seasoning! Bonus. Definitely pick up a loyalty card if you're in here, because I'm fairly sure you'll want to come back for more. Pommes Frites serve some of the most delicious chips in Glasgow. The chips are decent on their own, but I would highly recommend taking them to the next level with a seasoning and accompanying sauce. There's a wide variety of seasoning and sauce to choose from, and I would highly recommend the garlic Parmesan, fajita Mexicano, chilli garlic and Amarillo chipotle seasonings and the garlic mayo, pesto mayo, fajita mayo and chipotle mayo sauces. It's probably a teeny bit pricey for chips, but I would say well worth it for a highly customisable chip experience! read more

Like most people, I love chips and I'm always looking for new sauces to go along with them. So a place offering a multitude of sauces and various spices to pour on my chips should in theory be a huge winner when it comes to review time. Let's go with the service first. It is the first day so it will take a while for them to get up to speed. So no real issue with my ten minute wait to have my order taken as the place was pretty busy when I arrived. Also no problem with it taking a while for the order to be produced as good food can take time to make. I was however irritated when two separate people who came in after me and therefore placed their orders after me, got served their chips first as they were friends/relatives of the staff. All in it took around 20 mins to get out the shop with two regular portions of chips. On to the food. The spices and sauces are what makes this place interesting. There are about ten of each and you can put together some interesting combinations. The Thai mayo I had was lovely, whereas the cowboy BBQ seemed more spicy tomato than BBQ to be honest. There will be some great sauces and spices on offer and some not so good ones as well. The trick of course will be finding the former in the right combination. Sticking with the sauce, they seemed to be a bit to congealed and this meant the big dollop plastered on top does not really spread though your frites in the way that it should. Finally the chips themselves. Nothing special at all in my opinion. Just very average tasting chips that could definitely be improved on. Very nearly gave this a two star due to the service, but I have decided give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a one off and rate it just on the food. So three stars it is for me. Decent enough place, but there could be huge improvements made. I Love chips!! I mean I really love chips. Fat ones, skinny ones even curly ones. deep fried or oven cooked, spiced and un spiced. Chips are awesome!! I was rather excited when a Belgium chippy was opening, like could breath excited! I went for the the cowboy BBQ, which was nice but Not BBQ or even tasting similar to BBQ! The chips come in a cardboard cone which is nicely presented however the sauce is just plumped on top! What about the little crispy ones a the bottom? Where is the sauce for them. The chips themselves were nice fat ones tho.. My idea of Belgium chips are triple cooked tasty loads of spice and HUNDREDS of sauce, fries!! These were average!! Now on to the service. Slow very very slow! 20 odd minutes waiting with people ordering after us leaving before. Sad to say this chip shop has disappointed the biggest chip lover!! read more

This gets a four star in the context of a late night post pub snackette. As far as that gap in the market goes, this is a definitely a good option as against say, a dirty kebab! I found the long lists of seasoning and sauce options somewhat overwhelming at 1am and so just opted for a regular cone with salt and Belgian garlic mayo. Despite complaints from my husband about the whiff of garlic today, I maintain they were delicious and saved me from a rather nasty hangover! If the chance arises again (as I'm sure it might) I shall definitely be back and might even branch out and opt for a more adventurous sauce like cowboy BBQ or jalepeno. Seriously though ;) The chips were perfectly cooked, portion size of a regular cone suited me and the sauce was flavoursome. Yum! read more

I love chips. Because. Chips. I love all types of chips, skinny ones, big thick ones with the skin on, crinkle cut, and chunky chip shop chips. I'm not quite sure where on the chip scale Pommes Frites falls but given the name I'd imagined the potato part of the experience would lean more towards the skinny 'fries' side, instead they are kinda half way in-between fries and chips. Why is this important? Because initial impressions are important and my expectation was set by the name and, immediately, I was a little confused. However, they were cooked well, with a nice crisp outside without being too greasy, and a good waxy interior (I like fluffy but prefer to actually taste potato when I eat chips, weird I know...). You get to choose a flavouring and a dip and, for reasons not best known even to me I plumped for the garlic and chilli flavouring and satay mayo because.. fire mouth is so much fun!! The chips are delivered in a cone with your dip available either on the side (where civilised people have it) or chucked over your chips (heathens!). The flavouring was nice enough but I think the chilli flakes don't really work as they all clumped together, and the dip was pretty tasty but I should've picked something else as the chilli kinda made a mockery of the more subtle satay mayo. Essentially a slightly posh chippy that only does chips, this was ok but not so great that I'd venture out of my way to visit it again. But if I'm passing I'll probably pop in if I'm peckish because I love chips. read more

Went there for the first time today, I was in town at lunchtime and really hungry, fancied some chips & decided to give it a try. I had a hotdog with ketchup & mustard - not worth the money, give it a pass. The bun was crumbly and the whole thing just wrong, texture-wise. I also had the regular fries with garlic & parmesan seasoning and garlic mayo - oh boy!! They looked amazing and tasted even better, but by the time I was half way down the cone (which they're served in) I felt like I'd consumed a weeks worth of sodium.. I ended up going to Tesco next door to get a salad, just to balance it out. I won't be back, but I will be trying to recreate the chips & seasong at home, just with less salt.. read more

Recently my nights in town have ended in Pomme Frites. After a few libations my mind tells me that this is the place to go but in the harsh light of sobriety I have to wonder, a fiver for chips? Really? We also have to consider the additional cost of seasoning and sauce on top of that. Due to the cost I wrestled with the idea of wether this should be 3 or 4 stars. The deciding factor for me is purely this - did I enjoy them? Hell yes! The Kentucky Bay seasoning is flavoursome with a hint of heat, the Cowboy BBQ has a lasting sweetness with a light tang. The chips themselves are fresh made, twice fried potato goodness with a crispy exterior and soft, fluffy insides. What more do you want? As Tom Haverford would say, "Treat yo' self". read more

Can't fault the pre-gig frites I had. The regular portion was substantial and the jalapeño mayonnaise was generous and with a decent wee kick. However, I have to question the business practices. We went in at 7.56pm, studied the menu boards and ordered. The guy took some time behind the counter shuffling tickets and sundries before ringing up a price that was double what it said on the menu above. Upon challenging him about it he said "it's eight o'clock now, the price goes up at eight." At that point another guy came out of the back with a new price board that was hung over the one there already. I'm no consumer law expert, but I'm pretty sure that charging a different price to the one displayed to the customer is shaky ground, even if we were borderline on the cut off point for the cheaper price. Being as it was my first time in there I had no idea there even was a price difference at 8pm, but despite the generous portion I felt slightly ripped off in a way that I probably wouldn't have done if I had ordered well after 8pm with the more expensive price board already in place. Felt a bit like a bait 'n' switch, but I'll probably go back for more at some point. I'll just be earlier! read more

Chips, chips, chips and sauces..... I missed this restaurant in the E. Village in NYC as it burnt to the ground so I'm glad I found one in Glasgow. So many sauces to choose from. I got garlic and parm and ketchup. Small size. It was enough for lunch! Nice guys and good service! read more

Chips chips glorious chips, Ok so it is just a tattie with some seaonsing and mayo but it is a well cooked tattie with a tasty seasoning and nice flavoured mayo. Sometimes you just have a hankering for a nice carby hunk of fried food. These guys are pretty new on the block but have the best position for late night fast food situated right next door to the Garage nightclub at the end of sauchihall street. A good slection of seasonings and sauces to suit any pallet. A little bit expensive for a poke of chips but they are very tasty and not the normal oliy mess you would expect from a glasgow chippy; these are nice and crispy with a fluffy centre, all in all a good use of the humble scottish tattie. read more

I had high hopes for this chip shop, but sadly, I was underwhelmed. The chips seemed like they'd been pre-cooked, then tossed back in the fryer when ordered. The garlic mayo was nice, but there was way too much of it (order it on the side!!) There are a bunch of different seasonings and sauces to choose from, so if you got fresh fries, and found a good flavour combo (or were really, really drunk) then I expect you'd have a better experience than I did. read more

Good place for snacking when you're feeling peckish, reasonably priced. The chips are well cooked and of average quality; what really makes them worth is definitely the variety of seasoning listed on the menu, as well as the range of sauces to pair them with. I had a large portion - which was quite substantial - of herbal chips in combo with jalapeno mayo, while my boyfriend opted for fajita mexicano with mexican chipotle mayo upon the staff's suggestion. We both asked for the sauces to be on the side, so they came in a little tub. The chips were nice and full of flavour and the sauces added even a little more taste and we enjoyed them happily. Was in town last weekend for a gig at the ABC and we ended up getting out quite early (for a gig anyway) so I got usual the post-gig belly rumbles & wandered off in search of food of the unhealthy variety (of course). I spotted Pommes Frites was opening a wee while ago & like the cut of their gib so decided to pop in & see if it lived up to my standard of good chipness. I do like the look of the place - very WOODY; part Scandinavian, part garden shed. It's not a very big place & there are only a couple of seats up the window where chip-lovers can sit & possibly hold hands whilst munching on their fried potato batons. This place is strictly catering for your take-away (drunken?) customers. There was a bit of a queue (good sign I thought) which I was thankful of as upon entering this chip version of a sweetie shop you are asked 3 things - 1) What size you want? They sell the standard small, medium & large here. Nae Tall, Venti or Dwarf shiz. Prices start from a reasonable £1.75 for small to a stonkingly expensive & I-better-be-getting-a-whole-sack-of-potatoes-for-that-price £4.65. Ouch. ARE THESE CHIPS MADE FROM GOLD?! 2) What seasoning would you like madam? They had 11 choices all for a mere 30p. I chose Amarillo & Chipotle just coz I had that Peter Kaye song stuck in my head. Ahh...but other choices include Blackened Cajun, Fresh old bay (?!), Chilli Garlic & what I might try next time Garlic & Parmesan. 3)Feeling saucy sir? You have a choice of 14 sauces ranging from the many mayos (including garlic, pesto & Chinese) to Firecracker ketchup and other sauces like sweet chilli and Cowboy BBQ. These are all an additional 60p. Again a good price BUT you don't get loads my friend. I went for a medium fries with Amarillo & chipotle seasoning & a garlic mayo. I admit it wasn't the best combo but I love garlic & also chillies so I thought what the heck. The chips all come in wee pokey hat cones which isn't the greatest design for managing your chip-to-sauce ratio. Basically all your top chips get covered in sauce whilst the others are left naked. After I tried the garlic mayo I was actually thankful for this as the mayo was a bit TOO strong & creamy for me. It was also a bit odd looking. Hmm...I ended up wiping most of the mayo off the chips as I couldn't actually taste much of the chip flavour. I think that's the problem here - it's nice having all the options of seasonings & sauces but for every other flavour you add you're taking away the taste of what makes chips nice - the simple fact that they taste like chips. Again I found the chips had been seasoned slightly *too* much & overpowered the simple potato taste. Also the chips themselves just reminded me of late night kebab shop chips. I was expecting more of a thinner chip or frites. A lot of the chips I had were a bit too overdone & crispy without any potato feel/texture to them. Shame. Maybe I picked an off night or just a bad combination of seasoning & sauce but either way PF didn't live up to my expectations. They have similar stalls/shops in Amsterdam & I have to say these weren't a patch on any I've tried there. Maybe they will improve with time. Is heard loads of good things about pomes frites so I was really disappointed when I finally went and it wasn't up to expectations. The chips themselves were okay, a bit too chunky and a little soft. The garlic and Parmesan seasoning was pretty good but it was the only one I would choose. All the other choices looked absolutely bizarre! We also didn't really have much time to choose as we were the only people in and the staff member looking very impatient and kept huffing! So a rushed decision was made. It was over £3 for large fries (I would call this regular, not large!) seemed pretty steep considering that they were not what I would call large. In fact they were gone within a minute between 2 of us. I like the interior of the shop, all looks pretty cool and I like the idea of the cone holders (as the chips come in cones) which enable you to eat 'freehand' without having to hold a cone. I ended up here a few weeks back after a the live night at Nice n Sleazy. My mate Ed was ranting and raving about how amazing it was, so I agreed to get something. I really wish had just shared his chips. I would say you need to be really really hungry to eat here, the portions are huge and the sauces are really thick. The staff are friendly enough and its funky wooden décor and place is clean. The chips come in a cone, which are not the easiest to eat from, but there are little cone holders in the diner style sitting area, where you can rest them down. I didn't really enjoy my sauce, I got garlic mayo, it was really thick and the chips were a little cold. I also remember there being heavy hard core tunes being played by the staff, which was bursting my brain as I tried to eat through my chip mountain. I would only go back if I was drunk at 3am, starving and was sharing with someone else! read more
