Ordered the way I wanted. Quarter chicken, no sauce, sweet potato wedges, no salt, side salad, no dressing. (Don't ask! haha!)
    Carolyn M.

I'm still really diggin' this place! It's a simple solution to being hungry and there's something really, for everyone. My most recent trip here was with Sophie K during a much needed girls day out. We had been walking around the city centre since 10am and were in desperate need of food. Quick on my feet, I suggested Nando's as it was within a short walking distance to where we were shopping. I was quite surprised to be seated almost immediately as this particular location is always quite busy. We were sat among the crowd of teenagers on summer holiday and miserable looking couples who spoke not a single word their whole lunch. Looking over the menu, I had the task of ordering something I've never ordered and at Nando's it's super simple to get chicken without dressing, wedges without salt and salads without dressing. I was blown away by that seeing as now days most restaurants pre make their meals before hand, or simply used packaged ingredients. Gold star for Nando's. I ended up ordering the quarter chicken, sweet potato wedges and a side salad. The wedges came with a wee tub of mixed seeds which was a nice touch. I was happy! The staff, as always are helpful and cheerful, which makes the experience all the better Nando's is a sure hit in my circle of friends, and we'll be back always for sure.

As the name would suggest it's loaded with American style food, don't be down heartened though this is no run of the mill 'American diner' serving cheap hot dogs and yucky burgers from the cash and carry. The food from Nic's is tasty, well thought out and delicious. There are of course the likes of baked potatoes and sandwiches with lovely looking toppings to be enjoyed. My eyes however were very much glued to the Hot Dog menu where you can try such delights as the amazing Cheesy Pig Dog ( bacon and cheese) or the BBQ Dog (sweet fried onions, BBQ Sauce and dill pickle) or the very tempting Glasga Dog ( black Pudding and fried egg). What makes these dogs in my opinion the best take away dogs in Glasgow is that they fry off their dogs for a few minutes which makes them extra tasty. I've not tried the freshly made pancakes or waffles yet but they do come with some lovely looking toppings - the Banana Beast ( banana, maple, pecan nuts and ice cream) Peanut Butter Jelly Time (peanut butter and blackcurrant or strawberry jam) or the Sweet Porker Stack ( bacon and maple syrup) these are definitely next on my list to try from the menu. On my last visit I finally gave in to the cool looking doughnuts. These lovely little clouds of light dough are made in-house ensuring they are as fresh as they come. The base is so soft and flavoursome, the topping is a luscious thick layer of fondant sprinkled with a variety of American style toppings - Oreo, peanut butter cups, smarties, marshmallows......the list is endless. What really excited me tho was while chatting with the girls they announced that they were expecting their doughnut menus to arrive any minute. Hang on! Let's just think about that for a second........a menu......dedicated to doughnuts.......it's the stuff of dreams! Nic's is a great wee lunch spotwhere they use really good quality food and the girls who work there are all lovely and helpful when trying to make your selection....what's not to love about this place.

When you go in, it looks just like a normal deli... then you notice the amazing menu (taco bowls, proper dogs, "Triple Bypass" baguette etc.) and the cheeky bottle of Buckfast that's apparently used on Fridays to make some of their food a little more special. Going back to the food, it did take me a couple of minutes to choose what to have because EVERYTHING looked awesome. Even the SALADS!!! I was guided by the lovely staff who work there and plumped for the Taco bowl. A large, crispy tortilla shaped into a bowl stuffed with salad, guacamole, sour cream, PULLED PORK (this was my topping), covered with jack cheese and some Glasgow Megadeath chilli sauce. Great stuff. And for dessert you MUST get one of their special donuts... loads of flavours. Think Krispy Kreme but without the nasty aftertaste (you know what I mean!). If you've never been here, cancel all of your other plans and go here ASAP! You won't regret it...

I asked what sort of compensation they would provide and the same disinterested young lady said '50% off I guess'? I decided to make myself some dinner at home (which in retrospect I should've done in the first place) and decide to wait to see how long it would actually take. At 5:30 I had to leave for the evening, and sure enough at 5:35 the driver called saying he was there. I have ordered once before and there was no delivery issue but the food tasted like shoes. I only ordered this time in the hopes of a more flavourful cheap meal. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Instead the main changes are on the menu and the attitude of the staff. My big problem with Pinto was it slowly felt like a production line as time went on, this is now the opposite - you are greeted at the door by a friendly face, the staff behind the counter are friendly and chatty, and there seems a lot more love and attention put into making your food now. The menu itself is made up with the exact same menu as Pinto, but with additions to the burritos - a loaded burrito (a standard burrito with coleslaw and guacamole), and a superfood burrito (coleslaw replacing the rice), there is also the addition of Churos to the menu which is great for a sweet tooth like me. The food itself hasn't changed much, there's just a couple of tweaks I noticed. I spotted herbs and spices being added to the rice while I waited. My favourite part is the bland chicken that continually disappointed in Pinto has gone. The chicken now has a subtle kick of spice to it that complements everything else in the burrito brilliantly. A much welcome rebrand.

(My previous review is for a wing pop up he did). Thanks to Austen, Trudie, Pammi & Ally, I had the inside scoop of which burger to order - they all said the Top Dog was the best. I was a little confused as I assumed that was a hot dog but nope, it's a burger. What's in it? Beef patty, double bacon, bone marrow, Roquefort butter, caramelized onion and black truffle mayo on the side. And it came with chips. There was a bit of a wait but we were drinking with friends so weren't too bothered. The burgers were nicely presented on a tray with the chips in a pot. Excellent chips and I really liked the black truffle mayo. The burger was obviously the highlight though - it was totally delicious. I actually don't eat too many beef burgers these days as I find a lot of them are overcooked and bland but this was heaven - perfectly cooked meat (rare) and the Roquefort was just the perfect match as it really gave the burger a punch. The combination of flavours was just perfect for me and I really enjoyed it. I've had some good burgers in my time and I really do mean it when I say this is right up there at the top. My only negative comment is really the pricing - £13.50 for a burger and chips is pretty hefty but I can also understand why as this is a special pop up burger which tastes amazing and obviously uses quality product. For me, I wouldn't have this burger every day but as a special occasion treat, hell yes.

It wasn't…read morequite where I thought it was but if you walk along Union Street enough times you're sure to stumble across it (or look for Japanese Bull Leader, this place is next door). Head down the zebra striped stairs and you'll find yourself in a brightly light, casual basement restaurant which is well decorated and has a large TV on one of the walls. I'd had a brief look at the menu online but it was good to check it out properly and the staff were really helpful with any questions we had. I opted for veggie samosa followed by jerk chicken for main, and shared the mukimo (traditional Kenyan mash of potatoes, green peas, corn & greens sautéed with onions) with Graeme. There wasn't much of a wait for the food. Three samosas to a portion (reasonable for £3) which were jam packed with lovely vegetables and quite a bit of a spicy kick. There's mayo on the table as a condiment which might be useful for the more spicy dishes! For me, the real highlight was the jerk chicken. It was SO flavoursome and delicious with a lovely smoky charred flavour. I really enjoyed this dish and the rice that accompanied it (Caribbean rice and beans) was really tasted, packed full of veg as well as a lot of nice flavours. The mukimo was also really lovely and tasted better than it looked (green mash potato could be a little off putting) - I'm going to try to recreate this at home as I could happily scoff a whole bowl on it's own. I also tried the African Fanta - a less fizzy version of the Fanta we know, and I actually preferred it like that. It also comes in a pretty cool bottle which I forgot to take home with me - next time! Service was good, efficient and attentive and we never had to wait long for anything. It was a really fun place to dine in a large group and I'd definitely head back for another meal in the future. The prices are pretty reasonable as well so you don't need to spend much to eat here - starters around £3-£5 and mains around £10. As it is a basement restaurant they don't have any mobile reception (and seemingly no wifi). The other downside was that the music was really loud while we were there which made chat a little difficult!

I wouldn't be surprised if you walk down Union Street every day and had no idea that there is a…read moreAfrican restaurant located there. It is basically just a door with a small sign above it. Once through the door you descend down the zebra wallpaper lined staircase into the fairly large restaurant. Decor wise there are simple tables and chairs, with it being in the basement there is no natural light and the ceilings are pretty low. They also have the crackliest sound system in the world and the music was pretty loud which was annoying, bizarrely there was also TV's showing a music channels on silent mode? I would describe it as basic but comfortable enough. To start with I chose the Lamb Samosas these were fantastic deep-fried thin pastry parcels which were filled with seasoned lamb and came served with lemon wedges. It was a generous serving of 3 samosa of which I only managed to eat 2. The pastry was light, buttery and melted in the mouth and the meat was succulent and tasty - an excellent first dish. For my main I wanted to try the Samaki which is a grilled fresh water tilapia fish. However as soon as the lovely waiter told me it came as a whole fish eyeballs and all that was immediately changed to my second choice which was the jerk chicken. Yeah I am a chicken but eyeballs on a plate are a serious no-no to me. The Jerk Chicken was described on the menu as a ¼ Chicken portion lovingly marinated in jerk spices & grilled to perfection served with Caribbean rice & peas. What arrived was 2 pieces of gorgeously flavoured chicken which had a bit of a lemon taste. The rice portion can only be described as mammoth and was peppered full of beans, onions and peppers - it was so good and a meal in its self. A really fantastic dish which I didn't even come close to finishing. For sides we choice Cassava chips, this is a root vegetable which was slightly bitter but really delicious when you dipped it in the accompanying sauce. I was desperate to try the Plantain which is deep-fried African semi-ripe bananas, this was probably my favourite part of the meal cause it had this seriously lovely savoury/sweet thing going on which I adore. We also got a side of chips which impressively were hand-cut fresh chips when in all honesty I half expected frozen. I wasn't sure what to expect from African cuisine but all in all I was pretty happy with my choices and definitely think I choose wisely. If you are feeling adventurous I think a jaunt to Africa might be just the thing for you.
