    mapo tofu and a view
    Douglas H.

A tasty lunch. The mapo tofu was enjoyable. I feel somehow guilty not giving 5 stars, but I can't really find a reason to go bananas.

Was in Glasgow for three days, Dumpling Monkey was by far the best meal we had the whole time. Pot stickers, Bao, Sichuan spicy pork mince noodles, chicken Katsu fried rice with an amazing curry sauce. The staff was very welcoming & attentive. Do yourself a favor, eat here.

So so very tasty. Vegetable boiled dumplings were my definite highlight

You have no idea how happy I am that I finally visited Dumpling Monkey! I've been trying to get here for so long now. Lately my mum and I have been on a bit of a dim sum binge, making a bunch of different dumplings and steamed buns at home so we thought, let's see how the experts do it. We were not disappointed! Lunch the other day was pretty heavenly, filling my self up on the boiled vegetable dumplings as well as a flower roll and noodles. Between 3 of us we shared vegetable dumplings, beef dumplings(which I'm told were delicious), some steamed buns, a veggie dry noodle dish and a pork lunch tray. The portions are not small! We all left stuffed to the brims and for only £21 this seemed incredibly reasonable. We got a nice wee table by the window, and the staff were lovely although it was a busy lunch time. Each dish was brought out as it was ready, which was totally fine since we were sharing everything. There was also a nice selection of condiments on the table, meaning everyone could adjust to taste. The food it's self was really good, loads of different flavours, subtle spicing, everything tasted very distinct. The texture or the dumpling wrapper on the boiled dumplings was perfect, it had a great bite but melted away as you ate. No chewy dough here! The vegetable filling was fresh, light and tasty. The dry noodle dish was super moreish, with a rich savoury sauce and perfectly cooked noodles. All in all it was pretty amazing, I can't wait to get back here! Good food, amazing value and friendly, quick service!

    Yummy dumpling!

This place totally rocks! Especially now that they've opened up the building and created more seating. It's loads better in that aspect than it was last year when only a few people could manage to sit, while others were made to wait in a queue for the delicious food. I'm really happy about this addition! My boyfriend and I have been wanting to have a meal here for months, and finally decided to eat here Saturday before meeting some friends out. He had never been, so wasn't sure what to expect and was excited about the variety of the menu. At first, we were just going to get some noodle soups, but it's a dumpling restaurant, so we opted for both soups and dumplings. He ordered the Dan Dan, which is a spicy minced pork noodle soup and I ordered the beef spare ribs noodle soup. We also ordered the pork and Chinese greens pot stickers and a flower roll. The food was fresh and came out in due time, piping hot! My boyfriend really loved his soup and even added more chili to his (crazy man!) and the bit of my soup that he tried, he quite enjoyed as well! Very aromatic, he said. I tried his soup before he added more chili, and he was on the money with this one, it was so delicious! My soup was just as delicious, but in it's own right and not spicy at all. Our dumplings were very tasty but a wee bit on the greasy side. We patted them off on some paper towel before eating them- I think next time we'll get the boiled dumplings. My boyfriend took a Chinese cookery course and the filling of his wontons taste just like the mix that was in the dumplings. So delicious. The only thing we didn't like was the flower roll. I've had it before, and for some reason remember it being good, but it really was bland and not worth getting. Next time, we'll be getting a filled bun. The staff here are super friendly, with mom/grandma working the till and making us feeling really welcomed. We will be back for sure!

    Awwwwww yesssss those chicken wings

So Dumpling Monkey is AWEZUMZ. Yes, thanks fellow Yelpers for constantly recommending Dumpling Monkey to me. I'm truly happy and satisfied with my decision to eat there, despite going there twice on a Sunday and forgetting that it closes then ... I persisted. Gian and I went over and ordered a feast of a lunch! Vegetarian dumplings (boiled and pot stickers), char siu bao, salt and pepper chicken wings and century egg with roast duck congee. THOSE CHICKEN WINGS THOUGH. SAH GOOD. Also the steam buns with char siu and dumplings were delightful as well! And the congee, yes ... reminds me of home. LOVED it so much! Altogether it was about 24quid. Really a good price because we were super full and we also had to pack away some of the food cause we couldnt finish it! Yay for leftovers! The staff members were amazing as well! So cute, friendly and very attentive to their customers. I especially loved the aunty who seemed like an awesome lady-boss. Definitely will head back because really loved it! Craving the chicken wings again. Gonna get some soon hehe

Well, that was a treat! We stopped into Dumpling Monkey while having a lazy Easter Sunday wander in the West End. I'd heard good things but never been nearby when the Chinese food cravings kick in. Oh, I think I might move close by, maybe live in a box outside and pay for Dumpling Monkey instead of rent (if you aren't following what I'm saying here I'm meaning DEAR LORD THIS IS GOOD). Ahem. Quick history lesson; while far from perfect (or undisputable) for my money the best Chinese in Glasgow was the dearly departed Canton Express on Sauchihall Street. I'm sure many the yelper out there grew up dining on those formica tables, sat on the duct tape patched seats in the slightly too small booths. But what it lacked in grace it made up for in being the most exceptional food for the best price. The Canton is long gone now but a new contender can take up the mantle. I won't make you read what I ate (who cares, you already know I enjoyed it), but just saying get Dumplings, and maybe look over the other dishes before heading in if you can (the menu is HUGE). Enjoy and happy yelping!

Finally, a decent dumpling place in Glasgow! I am asian so I've had my fair share of dumplings - and it is so frustrating when you can't find a decent place for one of your favourite foods in your home city. Found this place on yelp and it had decent reviews so I definitely wasn't going to miss this! I ordered pot stickers which if I remember correctly were pork and cabbage? Anyway they were yummy yummy - they also come in 10's as well, so I would have quite happily to just have that. But as I am a huge noodle lover, I decided to try the chilli oil noodles (might have got the name wrong oops!) - this was slightly more disappointing than the pot stickers.. The noodles were ok, the soup was basically water and some chilli oil mixed in - so it really wasn't that enjoyable. I'll probably give that a miss next time but definitely try something else. I'm more of a pot sticker fan than a dumpling person - so I definitely recommend that to anyone who wants to give them a try!

Without doubt one of my favourite places to eat in Glasgow and very much in need of an updated review. If you ain't been here yet... Well what the hell have you been doing with your time!?! Quirky and small with super friendly staff this place has fast become one of the must visit restaurants in a city filled with new eateries opening up (what feels like) every single day. Sitting in or take away you won't be disappointed. Well except on Sunday when it's closed. :-( Few recommendations for you. Pot sticker pork dumplings mushroom or cabbage.... Or go crazy and have both. Dan Dan noodles with pork, pork char Sui with noodles or with rice. All dishes are amazing. This place is seriously awesome. You will not be disappointed! Get along now for a dumplingfest.

The most excellent pot stickers! #yelpersloveglasgow #red

So I finally got to try Dumpling Monkey! I was so, so excited as I love all things dumplings but had someone never got around to trying here and well it is the year of the monkey! This review is actually based on using their home delivery option - they have their own app which is super easy to use - and charge £2 for delivery which is perfectly reasonable. I ordered the steamed pork bun (£1.50!), the beef pot sticker dumplings (10 for £5.50) and the singapore fried rice noodles (£7) which come with the warning of HOT before the the dish. I was super impressed with the prices and really looking forward to my food arriving. I ordered at about 7.15pm and requested a delivery time of 8pm, after I had put my little boy to bed. Now here's my main gripe, my order arrived just before 7.35pm. Now I fully understand that if you are putting an order time in you need to accept a bit of time either side as your potential delivery time given the logistics involved in driving the food to you. That said I'm probably only a 3 min drive from the restaurant and to have the food arrive nearly 30mins early feels like they didn't really look at my requested delivery time at all. Now on the food. I love a pork bun, the hot and sweet centre and that light, fluffy bread. Heaven. So I grabbed it and started eating it before I'd even opened the rest of my delivery and was disappointed, waaaaaah. The filling was just too dry, making the overall bun claggy to eat. I ended up dipping it in the soya sauce that was provided for my dumplings and that just made it taste weird. The pot stickers were immense, my favourite dumplings ever eaten outside China Town in New York. I will be back for bucket loads of these!!! The filling tasted so good but wasn't too heavy and the dumpling wrapper was perfection, mmmmmm. The noodles were also very, very good. I loved the flat, thick noodles and the dish was certainly generously spiced! It was a brilliant sized portion for the price and my other half was delighted to scoff the second half of my dish when he got home as I just couldn't eat it all. So I mixed experience but definitely worthy of the 4 stars for the dumplings and noodles. I'd really like to use their delivery option again so I really hope the mix up with the timing was a one off.

Just some of the fat from the brisket broth. There was much more than this.

I'm really sad to be leaving this review. I have been to Dumpling Monkey many times and loved it; taken friends there, told people how great it is. And today we took ourselves there for my husband's birthday lunch. We'd been looking forward to it all week. The order of boiled dumplings arrived first and was fine - seemed a little less generous with the fillings than in the past, but definitely OK. The Bao Zi steamed bun was oddly flavourless, with the char sui filing inside the alarming bright red of dodgy takeaways. And then came the noodles. My husband's beef brisket noodles were disgusting, and I don't use that term lightly. The boiled beef in the broth was 60% lumps of pure yellow fat. Not the delicious creamy fat you get in a piece of pork belly, but rancid and disgusting. The sort of thing you see removed from congested arteries in anti smoking ads. Lumps of it floated through the broth and he picked out as much as he could. Trying some noodles left a film of the horrible fat on your lips. The attached photo is about a third of it - the rest is on another plate which was removed. He put it aside and ordered another bowl of the pho that I had chosen. My Vietnamese style pho seemed better - that is, until I put some of the herbs and bean sprouts into the broth and saw the state of the sprouts at the bottom of the pile - soggy, disintegrated and not fresh. Knowing what a food poisoning risk bean sprouts can be, this made lunch pretty unappetising for both of us. We left feeling distinctly queasy and depressed that one of our favourite restaurants had changed so much. This was the first time we had been since it extended into the premises next door and doubled in size. It seems that with it has come a massive drop in quality. I'm not sure I can bring myself to go back.

Mooshu Pork soup noodles....every bit as good as they look!

Having heard great things about this place, I finally managed to pop in for dinner a couple of weeks ago....and have been there another three times since then. It's that good. Dumpling Monkey do cheap, authentic Chinese food - dumplings, soup noodles, congee, as well as bubble tea and all kinds of other weird and wonderful drink options. And it really is fantastic value - I have yet to spend more than £12 on dinner. Lunchtime rice boxes start at £4.80. I'm still working my way through the menu (such hardship!) but definite favourites are the potstickers and the Mooshu Pork soup noodles. The restaurant itself is tiny and well camouflaged as a laptop repair shop from the outside - they've changed signage recently, and the cheerful orange monkey sign is no longer there, which really confused us initially. There's no wine license, so you'll have to make do with soft drinks, but given their drinks menu is as extensive as the food menu this is no bad thing.

Char Sui, Congee, Pot Stickers and Fried Sauce Noodles

Small but perfectly formed! What a delight to find tucked away on Dumbarton Road, a small restaurant that specialises in traditional Chinese street food, dumplings (boiled or "pot stickers"), noodle soups, savoury buns and a few things I'd never tried! The food is handmade each day, so we were lucky to score the last two Char Sui (sweet pork buns), add in some beef and carrot pot stickers, some Fried Noodles (a delicious combo of soy/garlic fried mince with noodles and cucumber strips) and Congee with sausage and mushroom and the feast was ready! Yes. We ordered too much. My Fried Noodles were delicious, a strong punch of flavour from the mince offset by the cucumber and noodles, it was a good healthy portion which I polished off with relish! The Char Sui were perfect, light fluffy bun with that delicious sweet pork filling, perfectly steamed! Pot stickers also hit the mark, and a wee dunk in a mix of soy, vinegar and chilli oil just made them sing all the more! My partner had the Congee, mostly to try, and struggled to tackle the huge bowl! Wasn't to my personal taste (it's a porridge like substance with a cornflour gloopiness) but always good to try something new. A chilled Red Tea washed it all down and, in total, our bill was just over £10 a head! Brilliant value! They've recently updated their menu to add in some more items, so worth a repeat visit for sure. It's not the biggest place, seats counted were around 36 but that would be very cramped, but they now do takeaway which I'll definitely be making use of. The food is good, portions large, it's cheap and the service is relaxed and friendly. THIS is the type of place that deserves to be a success and I hope to visit it many more times in the future.

No bathroom. Free wifi with password. They accept credit cards! I had to have my server type it on because I couldn't quite understand what she was saying. They've got super inexpensive lunch trays for only £4.80! Too bad I found this place on my last day in Glasgow! I ordered the preserves duck eggs & pork congee (£4.50). My congee was very flavorful, just a bit more ginger flavor than I'm used to. Portions are generous and the most expensive thing on the menu is £6.00!!!

Tom Yam Seafood noodle soup. Try it! Huge portion, and the best broth ever!

It looks super sad and there always 2 people eating which I assume are the actual staff members. Every time I build up the motivation to try Asia Ma, I went up straying to Ka Ka Lok as its more "happening". Well for once, we managed to pull through with our decision and enter this empty restaurant. Yes, it was just me and Gian dining in at a Malaysian Chinese restaurant at 930pm. A bit awkward but, we figured maybe cause it's late? Who knows. We were seated by the window by a friendly Malaysian (I assume) auntie, given menus and two baskets of prawn crackers (how generous ey) as we skimmed through the choices of food. Went for the menu with the Chinese words because that's where the good stuff is ey! Hehe Anyway, I chose the dinner for us and we had fried rice, steamed chicken with fungi (takes 20 mins to prepare and no, it's not the fungi you think! It's herbal mushroom!), deep fried homemade tofu, and pot of Chinese tea for 2. So 20 mins of chatting and prawn crackers later, I will quote Gian, "you chose well Sarah". Yes, the food was amazing. SUPER delicious! And huge in terms of portions!! We had extra for lunch the next day! The steamed chicken with black fungi was very herbal, gingery and just plain delightful in terms of light flavours! It complimented the deep fried home made tofu super well because that was seasoned with Malaysian soy sauce, shrimp, spring onions and all kinds of robust flavours! Along with fried rice, it was TWO THUMBS UP FOR ME! Altogether it was 15quid per person, and FYI, I have a lot of left over for lunch haha it's like you're paying for 2 meals! Guys, don't be fooled by the emptiness of Asia Ma, their food is AWESOME! Next time, imma go try the fish head tofu hot pot and Assam fish. Exciting!!

I'm surprised I'm the first to review TBH as Asiama has been here for a while. I have wanted to visit it for ages and I am glad I finally got the chance as the whole experience was really good. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and welcoming. It felt a bit like a Hong Kong cafe with the roasted meats hanging in the kitchen. We ordered a selection of dishes to share between four.... Here goes.... Roast duck, salt and chill chicken, Malaysian beef curry, char Sui Sichuan, authentic peppered chicken, fried rice, boiled rice and even some cheeky chips to help soak up the hangover. The food was all pretty good. The Malaysian curry was superb, spicy and with loads of sauce it was a favourite. The salt and chill chicken was really tasty and it was a great size portion. The Sichuan char Sui was my next favourite and was cooked really well. I also enjoyed the peppered chicken which had loads of peppers and onions as well as chicken. The only dish I was not that keen on was the roasted duck which was just a bit to chewy and fatty. The staff obviously thought we did not have enough food as they then brought out some really tasty and authentic dim sum which they informed us was complimentary. It was a great touch. By the time the free oranges arrived I was stuuuuuuffed! I'm tempted to give it 5, but I'm gonna go with four. Reason being the roasted duck was a Wee bit disappointing and the competition for authentic Chinese restaurants in Glasgow is now red hot. Don't get me wrong this place is excellent and I will definitely be back. Nearly forgot.... All that food and only 15 quid a head, bargain! Check it out soon Yelpers, it deserves more reviews.

The restaurant entrance is around the side of the building - the grand entrance is for the supermarket. Inside the restaurant is set up like most Chinese restaurants - large round tables with lazy susans and a few smaller ones around the side. The decor is kind of 80s, a big chandelier and a big fish tank. No complaints though! We ordered a selection of the dishes from the dim sum menu and shared - Shanghai mini bun, beef cheung fung, scallop and vegetable dumplings, spring rolls, char sui buns, squid. I really liked everything, to be totally honest - a great mix of food, all served quickly and really hot, and it was really tasty. I think the car sui buns and the Shanghai mini buns were two of my favourites but it was good to try something totally different like the beef cheung fung which was really silky and tasty. Staff were really friendly, helpful and fast but also having a bit of a laugh with us. The bill was around £20 each including tip and a lot of soft drinks - and I had a couple of tsingtao beers. This was a really nice place to try for something different at Brunch Club, and I'd definitely go back for dinner or another dim sum session soon.

Reflecting back that's sort of bizarre considering my live for all things dumpling and Asian cuisine in general. First impressions when you walk in are you can tell it's been about a bit, the décor is a wee bit dated and you can tell some of it was put together many years ago. That said the service is friendly and its clean, so who cars abut the décor as your there for the food. They do an Al carte menu, but I was there purely for the Dim Sum so I did not even read, in case was tempted to get two dinners!. We shared a selection between 4 dumplings fans... Highlights for me were - Deep Friend Beef with Ginger and Spring Onion, Prawn Dumpling with Salad Cream, Dried scallops & Veg Dumplings, Satay beef dumplings, pork and prawn dumplings, Chair Siu Bun.... I could literally go on and on. There was nothing I did not like, don't get me wrong as well as the ones I mentioned as amazing highlights, there was some that were just OK, but I can genuinely say I liked the lot. Boiled to steamed, buns to dumplings it was all good. I now really want to go back for the Al carte menu and will do in the next few months. If you like dumplings and dim sum you're going to love this please. Just make sure you check serving times and days before you go as they do not do the full menu all the time.

I appreciated…read moreit was an accident, but there was a distinct lack of sincerity with the response, so much so it could almost have been accompanied by a shrug of the shoulders. And it's a great pity, because the food in Chow is superb. Situated in a tiny unit on Byres Road, the Chinese restaurant makes use of every inch of space to cram in as many people as possible, both on the bottom floor and the small mezzanine level. The reasonably priced menu is extensive but I'm afraid my stubbornness when it comes to the ordering of Chinese foods means I'm only in a position to recommend my old faithfuls, hot and sour soup and chicken chow mein, both of which are excellent in here. In actual fact, this could almost have been a five star review but there's no getting away from the abruptness of some staff members, which I find to be an all too common occurrence. I really shouldn't come back, but unfortunately the food is just too damn good.

It was a £10 donation - to cover ingredients, decor, and towards start up costs of the Sunshine Tea Lounge business - and BYOB. We were shown around the secret location (address private messaged to attendees a couple of days before) and presented with a refreshing ginger & lime mocktail. There were little dish name cards spread out on a table but I didn't note them all down so I may be slightly off with descriptions. There were around 20 guests and we spread ourselves out in different rooms, some people sitting on a sofa or on provided chairs, and some of us standing. This wasn't an official Yelp event but there were quite a few of us Yelpers there. First dish up was two bowls of lotus root dip and fried crispbreads. This was one of my favourite dishes of the night, the dip had lots of flavour and the breads were delicious. Next was the lotus root crisps with a lotus root dip, this one a bit more creamy in consistency than the previous ones. The crisps were very thin so these were not really as suited for a dipping style, but also tasted great. Following this were green peppers in a garlic and black bean sauce - this was very tasty and I could have eaten a bowl of this to myself easily. We then had a salad of greens and carrot topped with sesame seeds, and some hoisin chicken wings were also brought out. Next was firecracker rice with either a vegetable curry or a chicken curry. As the plates that had come out were for sharing with a large group of people I was quite hungry by this point and was looking forward to loading up in carbs. The curry was nice, very mild. I did wonder what happened to the dumplings as I'd seen place cards for different varieties of dumpling - and mentions of them on social media for tonight's event, but none ever materialised. Lastly, there were desserts of orange and cardamom cakes, and sweet potato mochi in a coconut sauce - the latter being suitable also for vegans. Again, these were all shared and self service, so I felt I had to be considerate with watching portion sizes. It was good to be able to chat with chef & host, Susan, at the end of the night about the food and other Chinese dishes. I have opted to give it a 4 as although I enjoyed the event, the Yelp event a few weeks ago - where there were only 8 people - looked a bit better in that everyone had a seat to themselves for the evening, their own portions of food, and more opportunity for chat about the Sunshine Tea Lounge concept - discussing the mood boards, etc. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future events; unfortunately I can't make Susan's pop-up in two weeks' time but I hope to make another of her events soon!

I then had a beng - a mighty big fried thing stuffed with shitake mushroom & vegetables. Both items were fried, so not exactly the healthy choice, but my gosh they were tasty. Ideal hangover/comfort food. It would set them off nicely to perhaps be served with some fresh salad. I'll watch with interest to see what Sunshine Tea Lounge do next.

Haw Gao and Shu Mai - standard fare done very well. Congee - massive bowl and well worth it. Fried shredded squid - definite winner. The only miss was the Cheung Fun (rice noodles). Who ever had string beans in them before? Clearly, not in Hong Kong... And definitely a no no. Coming from Edinburgh, this is perhaps the best dim sum I've had in Scotland! If you order the usual sweet and sour chicken it'll be hit-or-miss, according to other reviews on other sites. Hint: Just ask for dim sum and they'll give you a pictorial menu to help you along. So we went for said dim sum today (Sunday) and it didn't disappoint! It was hoachin' with Chinese and Scots alike enjoying an afternoon out with Family and friends. We opted for a selection of 5 dim sum and 1 rice hotpot dish (between 2), washed down with Chinese tea. Har cheung fun (cannelloni like prawn filled noodles), custard buns, pork and nut dumplings, fried squid and lo bak go (a fried turnip and sausage cake) all graced our table - All great value at £3.50 to £4 each. Our black bean ribs and fried chicken feet rice hotpot dish was £6 and was suitable for 2 - lovely, but I tend to leave the feet to the wife:-/ They also threw in a free vegetable dish, choi sum - and I'm telling you I'm stuffed!!! We have dim sum a couple of times a month and it competes with the best in Manchester and London and will give you a feel for the cavernous Dim Sum restaurants they have in Hong Kong. The service wasn't too shabby either with "politish" and prompt service even though they were extremely busy. We'll be back soon :)
