Noodle on Bath Street
Rocco G.

So this new joint popped up outta the blue called Noodle. I'd only spotted it per chance on my way to work and I did a Google search to see what they were about. Amazingly Google failed me as I couldn't find any info about the place. This fuelled my curiosity so I thought I'd just check it out for myself. Much to my astoundment Noodle specialises in, you guest it, Noodles! But this aint your typical noodle bar. All their noodles are actually home made and this is really evident in their lovely, dare I say it 'Al dente' consistency. From the moment I stepped foot inside the staff were exceptionally welcoming and asked firstly if I'd ever eaten there. Because I hadn't, the waitress explained the whole menu to me. The speciality seemed to be the soup noodles but they also offer stir fry noodles, speciality chinese dishes, dumplings and some amazing cold salads. I'll start with explaining the genius behind the salad dishes first. For a small (£1) or medium (£2) portion you get to visit the salad buffet section and fill your plate with some of the tastiest veggies this side of Beijing. Think spicy dressed bean sprouts, sweet and sour type potatoes, Kimchi type cabbage, to name but a very select few. Foolishly I went for the small plate but next time I need to try them all as they were UNREAL! For mains I opted for the beef flank noodle soup. The dish contained some super fresh and succulent flank strips, tonnes of coriander, garlic and spring onion in a delicate light broth. You can choose to omit any of the garnishes too which I thought was great. As I like my soup a little saltier and spicier I helped myself to the soy and crushed chillis in oil on the table. The dish was really wholesome and filling and the freshly prepared noodles complimented it perfectly. All this deliciuos food, washed down with a soft drink cost me less than a tenner! I'm loving the recent populariy of the the no-frills, traditional Chinese style cafe opening in Glasgow recently. Nothing fancy, just honest home made Chinese food. This really reminded me of a place I used to visit in Hong Kong, therefore, for the amazing ambience, value for money and traditional taste, it an easy five stars from me :)

YAAAASSS! Roast beef with freshly made noodles and broth on this cold afternoon!!

Ok so I can safely say that sometimes the most simple looking places are the best for food. This noodle place really reminds me of some restaurants back home; simple, minimal and with a happy loud family running the joint! Ahh how nostalgic haha The aunties serving us really remind me of lady bosses you see in local food places back home, except these women were super friendly and very happy to see us haha loved them! They're totally gonna be my friends lol So this is a wee place by Bath Street that serves noodle soup! They have a small menu with choices for the broth, dumplings and sides, which is great because they focus on making their dishes good! I ordered noodles with roasted beef, and my friends had lamb ribs and sliced beef with broth! The awesome thing is seeing the chef (who I assume is the lady boss's husband or family member) cut up fresh noodles and boiling them right in front of you!! YESSS finally a place that makes noodles fresh!! Made me ecstatic!! Also, my noodle soup was DELICIOUS, especially on such a cold day! Having that broth with a hint of spicy chilli paste in it really hit the spot! It was very filling too so that gave me the energy and warmth to go about my day! Yeah! My bowl of noodle soup was only £7.50, like cmon let's eat here every damn day for goodness sake what am I waiting for We also had beef dumplings on the side too but I reckon a bowl of noodle soup is actually more than enough to fill you up, unless you have an appetite of a ferocious lion then by all means. I will DEFINITELY return to Noodle and highly recommend err'one to hit this place up! It's affordable, the staff are super cute and food is delicious! I'm probably going there tomorrow ... And AT LEAST once a week for that matter lol. Too good!!

There's many reasons I love Yelp, but probably the main thing I love is discovering places like Noodle. I consider myself pretty adventurous but I'm not sure I'd have gone to Noodle unless I'd read Rocco G & Austen M's review - it's not that it's not appealing from the outside, it's just that Glasgow has so many good places to eat that I'm not sure I'd have rushed there. Well thanks to their reviews, I realised I needed to get my butt there ASAP and drove into town especially for lunch yesterday. It's right above the Howlin' Wolf and is very casual inside, definitely more cafe than restaurant style. My glasses fogged up as soon as I walked in as the place gets super steamy with all the cooking they're doing! I looked over the menu and really wanted to order everything, but limited myself to the chicken with preserved Chinese radish in broth (£7.50). There's also specials of the day on the menu board on the wall and it's worth a look at those - I would definitely get something to share when I go back with a pal next time! Most of the menu is noodle dishes but there's also dishes with rice, steamed buns and dumplings. I loved seeing what everyone else had ordered as they were sending out a whole range of awesome looking dishes. When my broth arrived (maybe a 5-10 minute wait) it was a massive bowl and filled right to the brim. The chicken broth was really clear and I worried it would be flavourless but I was wrong, it was packed with flavour. It also had spring onions in it, and the preserved Chinese radish was a little unusual taste but I totally loved it. The chicken was almost minced, and you could tell the noodles are made fresh as they are nicely chewy and tender. Pretty much heaven in a bowl. I couldn't finish it all but I loved every spoonful. As Rocco said, there's some oils on the side which you can add like chili but I didn't worry about that for this time. My bill (with a bottle of coke) was just under £10 which I thought was a reasonable price for a whopping bowl of noodles. I love the idea of the cold Chinese salad platters and would definitely get one of those next time - the salads are presented in the drinks fridge and looked really tasty. Notes: They'll take bookings for groups. There's a toilet for customers. All noodles are made fresh to order and if you sit at the counter you can watch them getting made. Open from 11.30am - 10pm every day.

Dumplings!

For my 450th review I have an absolutely brilliant place to tell you about. On Bath street above The Howling Wolf is ........ Noodle! Short and simple name, but nothing simple about the food, for me it tasted amazing. The set up is quite small inside. Probably room for about 15 people to sit. It's more relaxed Chinese cafe than restaurant (think Dumpling Monkey style) and you can see the food being cooked in front of you. This means you get to watch the noodle chef make your noodles from scratch. It looks quite hard work and for sure a skill learned over years. It is fascinating to see and adds to the authenticity of the place. The staff are all very friendly and come straight to welcome you and show you to a table. You are handed a small menu and there is also a chalkboard with specials on it. The selection is not huge, but is all very interesting. You have super cheap starter/side options like the salad buffet, chicken drum sticks or Chinese egg all for under £1.50 a shot. We had the drum stick and it was a tasty way to start the meal with a small pre noodle bite. Drink wise it's not got a liquor license, so we just had sparking water, but they have several different soft drink options available. For mains I had the beef flank noodle soup and we shared dumplings on the side. Both were amazing. The dumplings were boiled and fluffy and I made up a dipping sauce out of chilli, soya sauce and black vinegar. The noodle soup again was so tasty, I also added the same accompaniments to that to raise the spice and taste level and it added to the already great broth. This place does exactly the type of food I was lucky enough to try on a recent trip to Asia. Exceptionally tasty and authentic dishes, we paid 25 quid total at the counter and left happy, with some noodle soup in a box to eat for lunch the next day. What you waiting for? Get down to Noodle and have some noodles ..........and dumplings of course!

Chicken and preserved radish noodle broth

I'd read a few reviews about this place so I had to see for myself. I went with the OH and we sat by the window. It probably wasn't the best view for checking out the food board at the front that tells you about the rice dishes they do and the specials. But it was fine. We were in for the NOODLESSSS!! I got the chicken and preserved radish noodle broth and the OH got the egg fried noodles. We decided to share dumplings to start. There was a chilli oil dip, soya sauce and vinegar at the side. The dumplings arrived and there was a good number. They did not look amazing, but by golly they tasted so. Then my broth arrived and I shared it with the OH because it seemed to be quite a wait for his dish! The noodles were the best I've tasted. I never knew noodles could taste like this! The OH went to ask about his main because it seemed so long, but we were assured it was coming. It worked out well because this way we shared both meals, and I got to get a good scran of his! His dish was good as well but I did not notice the great tasting noodles because they were coated in sauce. It was yummy though. I told my mum about this place and I will definitely be back!

When it comes to picking a favourite type of food mines will always be Asian, weather that be Chinese, Indian, Japanese or Korean I love them. Recently on my travels I have fell in love with Asian broths. This could be Ramen or just a big bowl of noodles soup. When Rocco G had informed me that a noodle Canteen had open I knew I had to get involved. On the walls there are chalk board with the menu and special also there is little takeaway menu you can choose from. We decided to share some smaller dishes and have a broth each. First out was Chinese chicken drumstick covered in Chinese spices. Next up was some dumplings not sure what was in them as they did not specify- northern style Chinese dumplings. Still both were extremely tasty and only lasted for a couple of seconds. Now for the main event the big daddy of all broths! Beef flank with handmade noodles. Now normally at this point I'm like yeah right handmade then frozen and delivered from the hand made shop. Well! You could sit and watch the chef make the noodles by hand. The broth was delicious with the beef so tender I cannot wait to try everything on the menu.

Northern pork dumplings

I hate being the person to do this, especially after all of the raving reviews that precede me. I just didn't the same experience. To be honest, I wasn't completely sure as to what I should expect, but Carolyn E. and I walked through the door and there is a Asian couple chatting away in Chinese eating noodles - just as it is the case with Dumpling Monkey, if the "locals" eat there, then it must be good, right? We were shown to a table by a rather timid girl who talked us through the menu, and I did have some difficulty understanding her. We perused the menu and it took us quite a while to decide what we wanted to have. Carolyn went for the lamb ribs, I went with my usual of won ton soup (for comparison purposes, I am a scientist after all), and we went for the northern dumplings to share. We also got some Diet Cokes, which were warm... we were not impressed. It was a stroke of fortune that Carolyn's food came out first, because it was layered with cilantro (coriander) which I'm not such a fan of if I am honest (put a little bit in the Guac and I am happy but otherwise, stay away from me!), and so I managed to run up to the counter and try to communicate with the person that I did not want coriander in my soup. Please. My soup (sans coriander, but with bucket loads of seaweed) had lots of wontons. The filling (pork, same as our dumplings) was tasty, but the broth could have done with a bit more seasoning, but on the plus side it wasn't too fatty. I tried the seaweed and it was good, but be advised, it comes with rocks, barnacles or shells (i couldn't work out what it was exactly) attached. Mmm, freshness. Just be careful when you're eating it. The portion is huge but for that price, i would expect it. The dumplings were boiled, also had a pork filling, and were quite heavy and salty. When they're hot and fresh, they are quite tasty but when you let them go cold as Carolyn and I did... well, you're left with utter disappointment of sad and cold and watery and ew dumplings. So, my advice is to eat fast. Personally, I do not think I will rush back here any time soon, especially with Dumpling Monkey being so close and being more affordable that this place. I am glad that the other Yelpers have been enjoying this place so much though, shame that my experience didn't live up to their reviews.

Shredded Chinese radish with spring onions in broth. Wow! It's a portion and some!

Wow! After seeing so many great reviews pop up for this place lately I knew I had to taste it. I have a bit of a soft spot for Asian food in general right now so I knew it would be right up my street. I was not disappointed! My boyfriend and I order a small salad plate and a noodle bowl each. We were given menus when we first sat down by a very friendly young man. When he came back to take our order he showed us the salads and gave us the small plates. They're little, but it's £1 and tasty! You can help your self to the range of cold salads they have. The kimchi style dish was great, firey with Chilli but fresh and I had a thin glass noodle salad which was really tasty. We picked at our salads as we waited for our noodles to come, which was only around 5 minutes although it was quiet tonight. It's great seeing them make the noodles and you can really taste the difference! The portions are MASSIVE! But not heavy, the broth was light but packed with flavour. The hit of spring onion and coriander made it taste very fresh. It was just heaven in a bowl, just what you want on a horrible wintery evening. Luther got a beef bowl which he said was great, rich dark broth with plenty of big chunks of beef. We never managed to finish our bowls, next time I'm taking my left overs home! As we were leaving the guy was dead friendly and asked how we enjoyed our meal. I can't wait to get back and try something new! I'm debating if I can make it down from my work at lunch time for take away. The of things that maybe let the experience down a little were, as my boyfriend put it it's a meal you want to sit down to a cold beer with and also the atmosphere was lacking a little. It was very quiet when we were there, could have done with a little background music or something. But still, the food. Yum!

Beef dumplings, so good!
Roz M.

I was so excited to try the food here after Rocco's original review and then all the 5 star reviews that followed. I am very happy to say the food was brilliant! The menu is fairly short but there were lots of things I wanted to order. I was lunching with the wonderful Briony and we ordered the beef dumplings (£6) to share (mmmmmmmmm) and I went with the chicken broth (£7.50). We munched on a plate of salad whilst we watched the chef making the noodles fresh and cooking our food. The next time I go back I'm having a salad all to myself, everything tasted so good and I had to restrain myself from not eating more than my fair share. Our broth and dumplings arrived at the same time and we basically ended up with a feast of food. The broth bowl is big and stuffed full of noodles, veggies and your choice of meat. Neither of us could finish our broth and the staff kindly packed it up in take away containers and I had the remainder for my dinner - it still tasted really good despite me heating it up in the microwave. As I write this I want to go back for a second visit to Noodle right now!

Lamb ribs in broth
Carolyn M.

Sophie K and I went along for some dinner recently and were quite excited after reading all the reviews from our fellow Yelpers. When we walked in, there was only one other couple in eating, and the staff were just waiting around for something to happen. We were told to sit anywhere and a very quiet girl came over and gave us the menus. She went on to say that the first three options were soup dishes and the last three dishes were fried noodle dishes, but we were a bit confused because there were more than just those six dishes on the menu. While we waited, we ordered two cokes and turns out, they were warm and we weren't offered ice or glasses. I'm not a fan of warm coke, but drank it just the same. I ended up going with the lamb rib in broth, which was a noodle soup with bits of lamb on bone and loads of yummy cilantro (to the disgust of Sophie K. who hates cilantro). We shared a portion of dumplings and Sophie ordered the wonton soup. A very positive aspect of Noodle is that they make their noodles right then and there to order. You can actually see them being made which is a nice touch. The issue I had with them is that they were quite plain and very soggy in my soup. They tasted like well overdone noodles. The broth was very plain with barely any seasoning whatsoever, but the cilantro made me a happy girl and added flavour to the broth. The lamb rib was tender, but very fatty. I felt bad picking off all the fat, which amounted to quite a bit once I was done. The portion was a huge size, but I was able to finish it because I'm a porker. The dumplings were boiled and very very salty. We took our time eating them, and ended up with three left once we were done with our soups. We both ate one and left one due to the fact that they were actually quite gross once they'd gone cold. Salty, mush, watery, yikes! Not much to write home about with this meal, really. We've definitely have had better at Dumpling Monkey, that's for sure. I'm sure we'll be back, but I won't be running back any time soon. There are a lot more places to try before I return.

More beef noodle soup. Roast beef flank in broth.

I had planned to visit this place the moment I found out there was a restaurant in Glasgow with hand-pulled noodles. Is it bad to admit that my final motivating factor was seeing negative reviews? It was. I felt like I could wait when they were all good but some bad made me think I needed to see for myself sooner rather than later. I've now been here twice (with plans to go again after writing this review). I'll first address the negatives. The service is not the best. You go in, look at the menus, and order. It can feel a bit awkward. They also do really need to get colder chillers as the sodas and other drinks end up barely cold or room temperature. It's just more of a lesson and does prevent it from being perfect. But that's when you get to the noodles. I went in for noodles in soup because it's what I expected and knew they'd do well. I've so far had the sliced beef in broth and the roasted beef flank in broth. The first had the standard hand pulled noodles and the latter had a fresh cut noodle. They were both different from each other but still very good. The hand pulled noodles do vary by thickness, which is not the best sign but they were still chewy in a way distinct to hand pulled noodles. The broth is basic, but this is the type of thing where the noodles are meant to be the star. It's still what I want in that it's present but doesn't take over. The meat is nice and tender and a good accompaniment to the noodles. It's now my plan to take more people with me here. The value of getting to continue to have hand pulled noodles in Glasgow by far beats out any of the flaws they have. I no longer have to go out of my way to get hand pulled noodles when I'm travelling. My hope is they'll work things out as they go along but it's a great authentic experience. Just get a noodle soup, as the rest seems to be neutral from what I've heard.

Andrew K.

The noodles here were amazing- hands-down the best that my wife and I have ever had. She had the stir-fry chicken with thin noodles, and I had the stir-fry beef with flat noodles. Both were quite delicious!

It was a £10 donation - to cover ingredients, decor, and towards start up costs of the Sunshine Tea Lounge business - and BYOB. We were shown around the secret location (address private messaged to attendees a couple of days before) and presented with a refreshing ginger & lime mocktail. There were little dish name cards spread out on a table but I didn't note them all down so I may be slightly off with descriptions. There were around 20 guests and we spread ourselves out in different rooms, some people sitting on a sofa or on provided chairs, and some of us standing. This wasn't an official Yelp event but there were quite a few of us Yelpers there. First dish up was two bowls of lotus root dip and fried crispbreads. This was one of my favourite dishes of the night, the dip had lots of flavour and the breads were delicious. Next was the lotus root crisps with a lotus root dip, this one a bit more creamy in consistency than the previous ones. The crisps were very thin so these were not really as suited for a dipping style, but also tasted great. Following this were green peppers in a garlic and black bean sauce - this was very tasty and I could have eaten a bowl of this to myself easily. We then had a salad of greens and carrot topped with sesame seeds, and some hoisin chicken wings were also brought out. Next was firecracker rice with either a vegetable curry or a chicken curry. As the plates that had come out were for sharing with a large group of people I was quite hungry by this point and was looking forward to loading up in carbs. The curry was nice, very mild. I did wonder what happened to the dumplings as I'd seen place cards for different varieties of dumpling - and mentions of them on social media for tonight's event, but none ever materialised. Lastly, there were desserts of orange and cardamom cakes, and sweet potato mochi in a coconut sauce - the latter being suitable also for vegans. Again, these were all shared and self service, so I felt I had to be considerate with watching portion sizes. It was good to be able to chat with chef & host, Susan, at the end of the night about the food and other Chinese dishes. I have opted to give it a 4 as although I enjoyed the event, the Yelp event a few weeks ago - where there were only 8 people - looked a bit better in that everyone had a seat to themselves for the evening, their own portions of food, and more opportunity for chat about the Sunshine Tea Lounge concept - discussing the mood boards, etc. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future events; unfortunately I can't make Susan's pop-up in two weeks' time but I hope to make another of her events soon!

I then had a beng - a mighty big fried thing stuffed with shitake mushroom & vegetables. Both items were fried, so not exactly the healthy choice, but my gosh they were tasty. We've now been here a number of times and really like it. They do really nice dumplings, my favourite probably being the salmon and prawn one. The duck rolls are really good. And we've tried some of the stir fry noodle dishes. Most recently I went for the chicken rice porridge. I'd never had it before and really liked it. It's nice to have a good dim sum in Edinburgh. We ordered take-out and wanted to ensure it was enough food for two people, so we ordered 4 of the dim-sum and one of the glutinous rice bowls. We had the #1 Prawn Dim sum, #10 Ribs and Black Beans from the steamed menu and then the #23 Fried Squid Cake and the #24 Vietnamese Spring Rolls from the fried menu. All were delicious, especially the prawn and the Vietnamese Spring Rolls. The ribs were also good, but quite fatty and lots of small bones, so I was slightly turned off by eating those. The rice congee, #52 was good and hearty, but seemed to lack any salt or real flavour. I would say it would be excellent for a someone with a cold, but not an amazingly flavourful option. They did serve it with deep fried bread dough, which was so tasty. Overall, a delicious meal, but it wasn't nearly enough food for two people. It just wasn't super filling, but we imagine it is a great dine-in option if you have some friends to share it with and some time to linger. It is a bit pricier then most takeaway's, but it's a bit different then just getting sweet and sour chicken, and definitely worth the tasting. Also, they don't accept card under £25 pounds, so make sure to bring cash. Oddly enough, they serve a wine called Forge Mill, which I discovered at The Dogs, and have been hunting to find locally ever since. A great wine and I am excited they sell it. Definitely a place I will only dine-in from now on to get the experience, which I think makes them a great eatery.
