Pricey but well worth it. Opium was the top rated Asian eatery in Glasgow on TripAdvisor, so we had to try it out. The restaurant has a very fancy atmosphere perfect for dates or business meetings. The service is very friendly and fast. We opted to splurge ourselves and decided to order a ton of dishes. I can't exactly remember the name of each dish, but check out the photos I posted. I highly recommend checking out Opium if you're in the area. Parking around the restaurant is limited. But it's not a far walk from the multiple car parks in the area.

All of our stuff. Egg fried rice, Opium ribs, pork gyoza type thing, har gow and there was anothe one with scallops. Yummy.

While the food is REALLY good, it isn't the dim sum I'm used to (near Los Angeles). It's a bit pricey to order several things. Also, note this is fusion dim sum. Yummy flavors, but they're not all traditional. Their cocktails are great. I had their Black Forest Martini. It was like a liquid version of the cake. Really good.

Starters: Shanghai Siew Lung Bun (steamed dumplings), Sticky rice with chicken in lotus leaf and salt and pepper ribs.

Ok, so a group of chums and I decided to stop by this place on a whim and boy were we treated to some lip smackingly good food. We started off with steamed dumplings, something I've never seen in Glasgow before and due to their damn tastiness we were unable to proceed onto the main course. Instead we continued to order various starters from the menu, dumplings, more dumplings...and some more, then ribs, wonton etc. Everything was just soo good. I'm looking forward to heading back there really soon and trying the mains this time, that is if I can restrain myself on just one portion of dumplings. Service was great, good mellow tunes in the background and a really nice modern, clean feel to the place.

Chilli salt & pepper ribs - delicious!

Had a lovely evening here last weekend with some good friends. This was my first trip to Opium, and I had read lots of fab reviews on Yelp, so was very excited to try it out! The menu is great... not too big, yet still plenty to choose from. I was swithering between just ordering a few Dim Sum dishes and a side or whether to go for a main. In the end we ordered a Dim Sum each and a main each, which was great and shared the Dim Sum as starters. For Dim Sum we shared some chilli salt & pepper ribs, crispy duck rolls, and some mini pork buns (Shanghai Siew Lung Bun). I loved each and very dish, the ribs were cooked to perfection with meat that just fell off the bone, and a lovely kick form the chilli. The little pork buns were lovely little parcels of soft minced pork with a tangy dipping sauce, and the crispy duck rolls were super tasty. For my main course I opted for the Malay Satay Chicken. I have to be honest I wasn't impressed with this dish - the chicken itself was an unusual texture, very stringy, and slightly slimy dare I say! The sauce was delicious however! I was definitely disappointed with my choice of main course, as I have read so many great reviews about some of the other main dishes on offer, and both my friends loved their choice of main course (Thai Red Snapper, and Malay Spicy Tiger Prawns). I was also a little disappointed that rice wasn't included in the main dish, and was charged extra for a portion of rice. With the chicken priced at £13.25, I really would have expected to not have to order rice as an extra dish. This doesn't put me off the possibility of returning here though as overall a great experience with some super tasty Dim Sum, friendly staff, and a great location in Glasgow's city centre! I swithered between reviewing Opium as a 3 star or a 4 star experience. Really I would give it 3.5, but could have easily been a 4 with a different main course!

Inside opium is quite dark and moody which is clearly the vibe they are going for. It's all black wooden furniture, dark brown walls, cool feature wallpaper, and there is a super funky light in the middle of the restaurant which I loved. There are lovely big windows looking out on to Hope Street for people watching and I would imagine letting in lots of natural light during the day. A lovely place to enjoy a meal with friends. When were walked in it wasn't jumping but there were 3 other tables occupied - on a sunday night at 9.30pm, I thought was a pretty good sign that the food would be delicious. The staff were attentive and fast with both taking orders and bringing our drinks and food. I wouldn't say they were friendly but they weren't rude either, I'd describe them as perfectly pleasant. The menu is extremely tempting. If you are looking for a traditional Scottish style Chinese menu this is probably not the place for you. It consisted of a brilliant selection of both steamed and fried Dim Sum and a great selection of soups. There is a good selection of main dishes to pick from too. As we had nibbled lots of tasty canapes at Alston we decided just to go straight to the mains. While we were waiting for our mains tho we did order a side of Prawn Crackers to munch on, these arrived at the table really quickly. I've never tried a prawn cracker like this before, it was quite crunchy, more like a crisp than what I expected. It was really tasty and I enjoyed them with the sweet chilli dipping sauce. I ordered the Pomegranate Sweet & Sour Chicken which is described as deep crispy-fried chicken coated in a thin batter & served with pineapple & mixed peppers in a zingy sweet & sour sauce topped with pomegranate seeds and a side of Fried Rice. The dish was really nice, the sauce was gorgeous and sticky and the pomegranate really did come through in the sauce. It was presented with a selection of vegetable which went beautifully with the chicken and the sauce. I hardly ever eat in chinese restaurants for some reason, I don't know why because I always enjoy it, it does mean though that my chopstick action is pretty rusty. I did muddle through with them tho, but some work definitely needs done to bring my mad skillz back up to scratch. This is a lovely wee restaurant and based on the dish that I had I will be back soon.

Absolutely loved our evening here! We were out celebrating/de-stressing, this had been on our list to try for a while and I liked the look of the cocktail menu! We weren't disappointed! The chilli, salt & pepper ribs were easily the best ribs I've ever had! So delicious and with the perfect amount of kick! We also had the crab & chive steamed dumplings which were also lovely but next time I'd want my own portion of ribs all to myself! I sampled 2 of the cocktails, Opium's Den and Blushing Mai, loved both but the Blushing Mai was my favourite. Briony had recommended we stick to the small plates which is usually what I'd do as I always prefer the starters to mains in asian cooking but we couldn't resist trying the Hainan chicken and Hong Kong beef flank and we're glad we did as both were delicious! The chicken was creamy and very garlicky (just my kinda thing) and the beef was full of flavour and so tender. Both really good quality meals with none of that horrible sugary gloopiness you get in a lot of asian places. Really fresh tasting and we will definitely be back again soon for more ribs and cocktails! I wanted more ribs for pudding! Haha!

Food is superb! Found it hard trying to find a restaurant that did good dumplings in Glasgow and these were amazing. Defo worth a visit. Reasonably priced and the staff were lovely.

The ginger and mandarin cheesecake, seriously Devine!

We had dim sum for dinner and it was delicious! We particularly enjoyed several of the wontons and plum ribs. Very pretty place and quiet.

It was a £10 donation - to cover ingredients, decor, and towards start up costs of the Sunshine Tea Lounge business - and BYOB. We were shown around the secret location (address private messaged to attendees a couple of days before) and presented with a refreshing ginger & lime mocktail. There were little dish name cards spread out on a table but I didn't note them all down so I may be slightly off with descriptions. There were around 20 guests and we spread ourselves out in different rooms, some people sitting on a sofa or on provided chairs, and some of us standing. This wasn't an official Yelp event but there were quite a few of us Yelpers there. First dish up was two bowls of lotus root dip and fried crispbreads. This was one of my favourite dishes of the night, the dip had lots of flavour and the breads were delicious. Next was the lotus root crisps with a lotus root dip, this one a bit more creamy in consistency than the previous ones. The crisps were very thin so these were not really as suited for a dipping style, but also tasted great. Following this were green peppers in a garlic and black bean sauce - this was very tasty and I could have eaten a bowl of this to myself easily. We then had a salad of greens and carrot topped with sesame seeds, and some hoisin chicken wings were also brought out. Next was firecracker rice with either a vegetable curry or a chicken curry. As the plates that had come out were for sharing with a large group of people I was quite hungry by this point and was looking forward to loading up in carbs. The curry was nice, very mild. I did wonder what happened to the dumplings as I'd seen place cards for different varieties of dumpling - and mentions of them on social media for tonight's event, but none ever materialised. Lastly, there were desserts of orange and cardamom cakes, and sweet potato mochi in a coconut sauce - the latter being suitable also for vegans. Again, these were all shared and self service, so I felt I had to be considerate with watching portion sizes. It was good to be able to chat with chef & host, Susan, at the end of the night about the food and other Chinese dishes. I have opted to give it a 4 as although I enjoyed the event, the Yelp event a few weeks ago - where there were only 8 people - looked a bit better in that everyone had a seat to themselves for the evening, their own portions of food, and more opportunity for chat about the Sunshine Tea Lounge concept - discussing the mood boards, etc. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future events; unfortunately I can't make Susan's pop-up in two weeks' time but I hope to make another of her events soon!

I then had a beng - a mighty big fried thing stuffed with shitake mushroom & vegetables. Both items were fried, so not exactly the healthy choice, but my gosh they were tasty. Ideal hangover/comfort food. It would set them off nicely to perhaps be served with some fresh salad. I'll watch with interest to see what Sunshine Tea Lounge do next.

We've now been here a number of times and really like it. They do really nice dumplings, my favourite probably being the salmon and prawn one. The duck rolls are really good. And we've tried some of the stir fry noodle dishes. Most recently I went for the chicken rice porridge. I'd never had it before and really liked it. It's nice to have a good dim sum in Edinburgh. This place is off the beaten path but doesn't disappoint. The service could be a bit warmer, but that's easily forgettable once you've gotten your first plate.

We ordered take-out and wanted to ensure it was enough food for two people, so we ordered 4 of the dim-sum and one of the glutinous rice bowls. We had the #1 Prawn Dim sum, #10 Ribs and Black Beans from the steamed menu and then the #23 Fried Squid Cake and the #24 Vietnamese Spring Rolls from the fried menu. All were delicious, especially the prawn and the Vietnamese Spring Rolls. The ribs were also good, but quite fatty and lots of small bones, so I was slightly turned off by eating those. The rice congee, #52 was good and hearty, but seemed to lack any salt or real flavour. I would say it would be excellent for a someone with a cold, but not an amazingly flavourful option. They did serve it with deep fried bread dough, which was so tasty. Overall, a delicious meal, but it wasn't nearly enough food for two people. It just wasn't super filling, but we imagine it is a great dine-in option if you have some friends to share it with and some time to linger. It is a bit pricier then most takeaway's, but it's a bit different then just getting sweet and sour chicken, and definitely worth the tasting. Also, they don't accept card under £25 pounds, so make sure to bring cash. Oddly enough, they serve a wine called Forge Mill, which I discovered at The Dogs, and have been hunting to find locally ever since. A great wine and I am excited they sell it. Definitely a place I will only dine-in from now on to get the experience, which I think makes them a great eatery.
