I was pretty disappointed by Dim Sum, being a huge fan of the food it's named after and initially pretty excited to get along here and try it out!
Inside, it's got quite a cool vibe - I was never in the place it was before so can't comment on what they've done with it, but it certainly fits the style of cuisine they serve.
The menu sounds pretty interesting with different small dim sum dishes you can get, as well as a few mains. I was set on having smaller dishes before we'd even gone in, so I went for grilled pork dumplings, crispy prawn parcels and chicken satay skewers. All good so far. We also ordered a couple of beers with which to wash everything down, and I excitedly waited for my tasty goodies.
Here's where it starts to go downhill. Our server came over with some dishes and went "These yours?" to which Mr Debs and myself replied "Um...what are they?" because I don't really think we could be expected to X-Ray vision the dumplings/parcels to see what was in them. The aforementioned server didn't actually know what she'd brought out, so that was all pretty awkward. She then later claimed they'd given her the wrong table number or something, but surely you should know what you're bringing out to people regardless?
It turned out that it was, indeed, our food, so we got stuck in. The chicken satay skewers were definitely my favourite - while the satay sauce had more of a kick than I was expecting, it was creamy, coconutty and really very good. My other dishes were ok, but definitely had a shop-bought feel about them which made me pretty sad. Of course, if they are made on the premises then I'll feel a bit bad for saying this, but they definitely came across as ready-made - the prawn parcels in particular. I'm not sure if establishments like my beloved Dumpling Monkey and others have just raised the standard of Chinese food in Glasgow so much that I'm just spoilt, but overall I felt pretty let down by the food.
Again this is where half stars would come in handy as I was definitely swithering between 2 or 3, but the food wasn't horrible and they also had 25% off at the time, so it ended up being pretty cheap. They were still relatively new at this point as well, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. But if I end up back here and it hasn't got any better then you can expect an update in which I won't be as lenient! read more
