I can only comment on the arepas: they're small, dry, and overpriced for what you get. Kind of an unpleasant experience for your palate, and the whole "global" thing feels more "random" to me. read more

This place is awesome. It is only open from 7a-3p but it is the place to be for breakfast. The Scrambler is awesome. Every time I go there I try something new and I'm always amazed at how wonderful it is. If you want a classic breakfast, granola, or a latin inspired breakfast with chorizo they have lots of that too. Serving sizes and prices are wonderful. I'm going back again and again!!! read more

Terrible! My husband and I went to this restaurant on a Saturday. The salad entree I ordered was missing the croutons and was very pricey considering it was just spinach, some tomatoes, mushrooms and dressing. My husband's "special" breakfast came with the wrong toast - he'd ordered wheat not white. The waitress took forever to bring him the correct toast, and when the toast came it was completely dry and there was no butter served at the table. I opted to take a few bites of the white toast since I didn't get the croutons and it was AWFUL. Very dry; I think they must have picked up some wonder bread buns instead of using good bread. When the waitress came around to see about our meal I said it was "Just okay." She responded with a cheery, "Good?!" I replied, 'No. It's really just okay." At that she sniffed, turned on her heel and left us. One would have thought she might have asked if there was something wrong or if there was something that could have been done differently. Nope. Nothing. Nada. Conclusions about this restaurant: 1) Too pricey for very mediocre food (I mean really, these should be $6.00 or under items); 2) The bread is terrible and if you think they'll butter the toast - forget about it - and you won't get butter at the table, either; 3) Our waitress couldn't really care less if our meal was tasty, she just wanted the food to be complimented regardless. Not a restaurant we will visit again. With all the competition in Lawrence one wonders how long they'll be around. UGH! read more

Decided to take some friends from out of town and excited to bring them to this place but alas, the coffee was cold, we ordered and waited for 50minutes and still no food. Hands down the worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant. When we walked in there was no one to greet us. A man on his phone behind the bar said "have a seat anywhere!", so we did. A couple minutes later that same guy, still on his cell phone, drops off some menus and walks away. Another minute or two goes by and he comes back, still on his cell phone, sets down two waters and walks away. Apparently his phone call with his friend was more important than our business, so naturally we walked out and went down the street for breakfast elsewhere. read more

Disappointed. This place used to be my favorite breakfast in town, the food is consistently good, well priced and good size portions, but if there are more than a couple of tables be ready to wait 30+ minutes no matter what. The wait staff used to be A LOT better. Seems like they have some kind of turnover here, because the past few times I've gone the wait person hasn't been able to answer my questions, and they don't even know what the specials are. They're rude upon entering the resturaunt, they just scream at you to sit anywhere like it's some sort of fast food establishment, I came to a local restaurant not a subway right?The owner is also rude, I've seen him be blatantly mean to servers and kitchen staff, like do you not realize your patrons sitting at the bar have ears, right? My food has also been cold the past couple times I've been, but they always make sure to make it for me fresh and quickly so there is that. The atmosphere of this restaurant is great and the service was excellent. I ordered the fried egg sandwich and the pescole Mexican soup. The egg sandwich was truly delicious and I intend to come back and order it again, but the pescole was inedible. In fairness, I didn't care for the texture of the dough balls in the soup, but the broth it was cooked in tasted objectively badly. I passed it around to everyone in my party and they all agreed that it just didn't taste good. I plan to give them another chance, I know plenty of people who swear by this restaurant and the sandwich was certainly good enough to earn a 4-star rating. In town taking my daughter back to KU. Walked by the restaurant and thought we would stop in and grab a quick bite before our day got started. Great place for breakfast. Fresh ingredients and friendly service. I got a cappuccino and it was huge and perfectly made. I have really gotten one with such a perfect froth. My scramble of fresh vegetables was very good. We wanted to try their homemade Keylime pie but we were too stuffed. We will definitely come back tomorrow to give that a shot. read more

Global Cafe is a great place to stop for a nice breakfast, lunch, and dinner! I definitely recommend the Key Lime Pie, it is delicious! The remodel looks amazing and the food is very good. My daughter and I stopped here for Saturday breakfast, and we enjoyed it. Hardly any wait (it was a cold day so it wasn't crowded on Mass. Street), very nice & attentive wait staff, and we liked the decor. She had the breakfast bowl which was too bag to finish; the salsa is spicy, so if you aren't into spicy, I suggest getting it on the side. I had the Jardin Arepas - a Venezuelan fence corn cake with yummy sauteed veggies in it. We both really liked our food. I had a hot chai latte - it was ok, more mild tasting than I prefer. This was my spot when I lived in Lawrence. If you want a perfect brunch on Saturday morning, before you walk on Mass Street I fully recommend eating here first. The omlettes are amazing. I have never been treated so rudely by a hostess before. She was mad that I requested an open table (there were several open tables) for my elderly parents and son, so we would not have to sit in front of the entrance door on a breezy cold day. (The waiter kindly changed our seats to one of the open ones.) In spite, the hostess deliberately delayed our order and bill; so it took 1.5 hours for breakfast. She made the statement "I am the hostess and you will sit where I place you." Well ... I am the paying customer and I choose to not come back to your restaurant and tell others to avoid it as well. On a recent trip back to my old hometown, I was surprised at how thin the choices had become for decent breakfast food in the downtown area. The old, funky places that were still around in the '90s and '00s are gone, and mostly there's quick food for drunk frat boys on Mass Ave, though a few places still try to aim higher. The hippie-delic Global Cafe was certainly on of the best breakfast places in town, and deserves five stars for the quality of their food (I only tried a couple of things on the menu, but they were hearty and flavorful, and made fresh with good ingredients.) If I wanted to mark them down to four stars, it would be because of the service, which was okay, though mildly unfriendly in that odd cross between Midwestern-disapproving and wannabe-uber-cool that so many of the younger hipsters in Lawrence have adopted in recent years. Also, they tried to rush me out the door, delivering the check before I was even close to ready (even though the place was almost empty) and the waitress visited the table too often, interrupting my meal about five times in twenty minutes.Milton's, by contrast, had good food and a more friendly, more service-oriented vibe, and I wound up going back there more often for breakfast. Overall, Global Cafe rocked. They make Mexican-oriented food that isn't just something quick for drunks to scarf down at 1am - it was good and imaginative fare, and I will definitely go there the next time I'm in town. read more

I don't know where to start.....my girlfriend treated me to breakfast and we decided to try this place.........I had to ask for more coffee.......in a breakfast joint........the irony.......they don't have a b&g, the sausage was past it's prime :-/ I had to go in search of new napkins after spitting out the sausage, there was no flavor to the green chile sauce, she never checked back with us, she served us coconut milk (from the can) for our coffee (the spoon stood up when I stirred it), she reached over us twice to fill the sugar caddy and the jelly caddy (even when we asked her not to), she offered us a free punchcard for a free meal (we won't be back) we declined said punchcard........lastly, I watched her pick her nose and then wiggle her finger around in her ear while talking to the newest table! I regret every bit of time and money we gave the place and I'm sad that my girlfriend left her 18% she really only deserved $1 maybe $2! read more

I've been to Global Cafe a few times. Nothing would probably make me go too often. For the most part, I love the food. I'm a vegetarian and there are plenty of options to keep me happy and I have so far never been disappointed with my food selections. What I have most often been disappointed with however, is the staff and the service! I've never had an incredibly polite or nice server, most of the time they're lacking in common sense and often take their time or act inconvenienced should you need a simple utensil, napkin....anything really. That said, if you've got thick skin and a lot of patience then go ahead and give it a try, the food will not disappoint you like the server. read more

I've been here about a dozen times and I've always found it to be a great alternative to places that are a lot busier, louder, and more uncomfortable. Plus, the breakfast food, which i usually go for, is just as good as anywhere else downtown, and I've never had to wait half an hour to get a seat! Honestly the worst meal I've had in Lawrence. Not sure how a place like this is even open. Upon walking in, there is an immediate stench that should act as a warning to those entering. The service was awful. Our waitress turned away several people at the door...I wish she would've done the same to us. It was extremely hot inside and the food was bland and unmemorable. After looking at the menu online, my husband and I were so excited to try Global Cafe! Locally owned, inexpensive, and a relatively unique menu are all right up our alley. We could not have been more disappointed. It took over 45 minutes for the four of us to get our food. We had to ask the waitress for napkins and silverware after we were finally served. She placed a pile of napkins topped with a pile of silverware in the center of the table. The arepas were awful. They consisted of too-thick undercooked lumps of cornmeal stuffed with packaged shredded cheese that was not even halfway melted. The meat in the sandwiches was tough and dried out. My husband has had a better Cuban at Cheeseburger in Paradise, and he is never ever quick to praise a chain over a local place. My friend said his omelette was mediocre at best. Do yourself a favor and read the menu online to get recipe ideas and make them yourself instead of wasting your time and money here. read more

Do NOT go to Global Café if you have a party of 8 or more. The hostess will tell you it will be a 20 minute wait regardless of how many people you have in your party (I heard her tell 2 other groups about the wait time). We waited well over an hour and were never seated. It became increasingly more frustrating to see people be seated that showed up well after us. I checked with the hostess 2 times during our wait to ensure they had not forgot we were there. After confronting the hostess at the 1 hour mark, I asked to speak to manager. As walked toward the back of the restaurant to meet the manager I couldn't help but notice 3 available tables which would have easily accommodated me and my party. I informed the manager about my situation and how this was my first time in her restaurant to which I received a lackluster apology. When I asked if there was anything she could for me she offered me immediate seating (the tables I notice while en route) and complementary chips and salsa. I felt insulted. I said to her, "No Thank You" and walked out. I will NOT back. read more

I had the huevos ranchero and coffee. The huevos ranchero was about the most disgusting meal I've ever had. It was an open tortilla with undercooked black beans, practically raw potatoes, two eggs and cheese, all setting on top of watery green chili sauce. I could only take a couple of bites, then lost my appetite altogether. The coffee was terrible...it reminded me of the taste of the 5 cent cup of coffee you can buy at the Wall Drug at Wall, South Dakota. It tastes like it was chock full of minerals. One more thing.....when I walked in, I could not smell anything but the old building. I could not smell any food cooking. That is not a good sign. I knew it was a mistake when I decided to sit down to order a meal. If you want the best huevos ranchero in the world, just go down to Milton's.....there's a reason why there is always a 30 minute wait there. Don't waste your hard earn money on Global Cafe. The Global Cafe is a good place for breakfast in downtown Lawrence. It has a decidedly 1960s/southwestern feel to it, there are lots of options on the menu, the portions are appropriate, and the food is well prepared and wholesome. There are lots of positives here...they're one of the only breakfast restaurants in town with green chile, and you can get arepas here too. The breakfast potatoes are actually really good, with just a hint of cayenne. It's a downright nice breakfast place, but don't go there if you're in a hurry, or even if you have something else to do that day. OK, I'm exaggerating a bit, but the problem (and it's been a chronic one -- really, for years) is the service. You may be waiting (and I'm NOT exaggerating here) 30-35 minutes to get your plate of eggs, bacon, toast, and potatoes on a Saturday morning. This has to be an issue in the kitchen, because we've had the same problem over the course of a number of years and across different wait staff. There is a lot of breakfast traffic in town...the other places (The Roost, Ladybird, Milton's, Wheatfield's) are often packed and with lines, but there are always open tables here. The food is fine...but you have to have the time. read more
