This place is sorta kinda average... and yet I find myself here many a weekend morning. Well... they have arepa sandwiches here for super cheap. However, be warned the corn patties themselves can stand to be cooked at least twice as long... sorta mushy. If you ask them to overcook it, though, they will. I generally set up my stuff outside on the patio and stick a straw in a bottle of Cholula to compensate for the lack of zest in breakfast burritos, omelets and arepas. read more

Global Cafe remains a well-kept secret in downtown, for some reason. They keep a low profile, but if you're looking for yummy breakfasty and lunchy things, it's a great place. Don't eat here without trying something that involves chiles or chile sauce. They roast their own chiles, and the flavors are ah-maz-ing. The breakfast burrito is as good for breakfast as it is for lunch (they serve breakfast all day), and it is covered in green chile. The menu is huge, so there is something for everyone, any appetite. My kids love everything they've had here. The service is very personal, and sitting at the bar is such a quaint feeling. It's a cute little place that I think has food as good as, if not better, than Milton's, without all the hustle-bustle and waiting forever that happens at Milton's. Walk right in and eat yummy food. A few friends and i were trying to find a sit down place to eat before driving home. Thought this place looked good. It took our server about 15 mins to come get our order, all i wanted was coffee and toast. she forgot my coffee then brought out our food about 30 mins later. when i reminded her about my coffee she brought me a cup with fresh lipstick on it, then blamed it on the dish washers when the cup had clearly never even been put in the dirty dishes. Pancakes are THE BEST in Lawrence. Seriously, I come here on weekdays for lunch and still find myself ordering pancakes. Other than that, the arepas are pretty dang good. I tend to like my arepas a little crispier, so these are a little on the soft side for my tastes, but the fillings are awesome. They are really, really filling though, so while they are small, they are mighty! My favorites are the black bean and the reina pepiada. You'll probably only need to order one, but if I skip breakfast, I MIGHT be able to handle two. The service has always been perfectly lovely, but they are never in a hurry to kick you out. In other words, my only complaint with Global Cafe is the time it takes to eat there. They are slowwwwwww. My server told me that the arepas are the thing on the menu that takes the longest to cook, so that's probably where my complaint stems from. Last time I was at Global Cafe, I ordered pancakes to share with my friend as an appetizer and 2 arepas for my main course. I went to Global Cafe with my friend at 9am on Saturday, December 2nd. We were having breakfast before the Christmas parade began at 11am. Global Cafe was pretty busy. All of the tables were full so we sat at the bar. I ordered coffee and so did my friend. The menu is pretty big, with lots of choices. It is vegetarian friendly. The menu is also very well priced. Nothing was over priced in my opinion. I decided on the breakfast bowl, it consisted of a bed of breakfast potatoes, 2 eggs, cheese, homemade green chili sauce. My friend ordered the breakfast burrito (eggs, cheese, potatoes in a tortilla), added sausage $1.75, and had the red sauce on top. The restaurant was busy, but the service was incredibly slow. I didn't mind because I was chatting with my friend, but it took close to 45 minutes to get our food. When the food arrived, it looked delicious. The breakfast burrito was huge! My bowl was a good size, not too small, not too big. I took a bite of the potatoes first and Oh my! They were awful! I could barely choke them down. They had no salt at all on them. They were like a dry bone. I put salt on them, but the thing about potatoes is you can't make up for the initial under-seasoning, they either only taste of salt or they still taste like a dry, powdery bone. The bowl was supposed to include cheese, but I did not find any evidence of cheese anywhere in the bowl. The eggs were cooked well, sunny side up. The green chili sauce was just ok. A little spicy, but also lacking on flavor. My friend said her burrito was good. She also said the potatoes in her burrito were really dry and lacking seasoning. Service- 2/5 I had to flag down the waiter anytime I needed anything, he did not check on me on his own Food- 2/5 Has good and bad qualities about it Would I return again? This place seems an instantiation of Lawrence Average. The food: average. I had a shrimp Po' boy. Well, sort of. The shrimp was sadly not fried, and the bread only vaguely resembled a french baguette. Instead, it was this very, very crusty (yet not very appealing) squarish bread. The sandwich itself was okay, but Terrebonne one street over has far better po' boys. The black bean soup was just okay, as well. It could have used more substance; more texture, less watery. No such luck. Again, the service was average. Not bad, but not great. I'll probably end up eating here again, but I certainly wasn't overwhelmed. read more

Talk about stepping the game up: I not only had the best service Id ever had at Global today, it might be the best service I've ever had in this town. Night and day difference. The place was packed, but running like a machine. Everybody in the joint really seemed to give a damn. And not in the fearful, we won't make tips kinda care. But genuine care for the perception and well being of their guests. The ticket for a table next to me was lost, and I listened in as the server did his best to make a genuine connection and apology. Mistakes happen. It's what happens after that usually matters most. I also noticed that the staff now works as a team. Food servers know what I'm talking about. Huge difference. The food was ridiculously f'awesome as usual. I went with the chorizo quesadilla and a short stack of the lemon poppyseed pancakes with the fresh OJ. They have the best cakes in town, made even better with lemon poppyseed. Highly recommended. So glad I decided to go back. Nobody else in town can rock pancakes and chorizo like global. First impression, pass on this place and go somewhere else. First the service takes forever when the restaurant was maybe half full, then the waitress takes forever to come back. When they finally do come to get your order they get half of it wrong. When most of your food does arrive after the long wait the food is terrible. The pancakes taste like cornbread, they don't give you enough syrup, the toast dosnt cone with butter and the eggs are plain as can be and they don't offer salt and pepper. NOT to mention the fact that the granola with Greek yogurt was EXPIRED the yogurt was warm and chunky and bitter. The staff claimed it was not expired but it definitely was and they gave us attitude when we even claimed it could be rotten. This restaurant is over priced for the poor food and poor service. Nice pleasant surprise on Mass St! I ended up going here on a suggestion from a friend and was pleasantly surprised. The menu has a generous number of offerings for various tastes, including a good number of vegetarian options (which suited me) and quite a few for the ominvore. I ordered the Kansas City veggie sandwich and fries and it was a good lunch. Serving sizes were just right, I didn't feel stuffed or like I went over board. Prices were fair. All in all the entire lunch cost me only eight bucks, lower than I was expecting so I was able to leave a bit bigger tip than I planned. My wife and I eat at the Global Cafe every weekend. Being plant based in our eating, the menu is a little thin on choices, but we are used to that. After getting the Marks scramble a couple of times we decided to ask if they could wrap the whole kit and kaboodel up in a burrito with breakfast potatoes and put green chili sauce over the top. They were very accommodating and the Marks burrito was born. When we come in now we don't even have to order, the wait staff knows what we want already and gets it ordered for us before they even bring us our coffee. Good food, terrible service. Our waitress clearly forgot to submit our order, or it got lost. Four tables of people came in and were served before we were. The worst part was that instead of owning the mistake and apologizing, the waitress told us that 'beef and chicken take a long time to cook and we don't want you to get sick from salmonella.' The other people who came in later and were served before us received beef and chicken, so obviously complete bullshit. She never apologized and insisted several time later that she was looking out for our health and that's why it took so long. I was going to talk with a manager, but since getting our food took 40 min, I didn't have extra time to hang around during my lunch break. No comps for our order or anything. We had a great dining experience here! Great, friendly service and comfortable atmosphere. We went in midday and were pleased to see that they served breakfast all day! I had the breakfast scramble and my daughter had a pancake and bacon , we both loved our food. There are a lot of breakfast/lunch places on Mass street, but few give you the option to smother your eggs, bacon and breakfast potatoes with green chiles from New Mexico. In part, I think this is what makes Global Cafe special. I say "in part" because, as someone that hails from the Southwest, I appreciate not only their care and attention to Southwestern cuisine but also the vibe that they've managed to foster. I'll definitely be returning for their huevos rancheros, borrachos, green child arepas and green chile cheeseburger. read more

Updating my review to say I think this place is under rated. Huevos rancheros with green chile are soo good. They use local and hormone free meats. Some organics. They give back to the community participating in the cordley school farm to school program, selling tamales every Saturday at the farmers market. The Roost is packed. The Ladybird is still closed. What's left? This place. Their menu is big, good for vegetarians and gluten-free folks. It's a little pricey for OK food. The biggest problem is that they burn incense the whole time, which is incredibly overpowering. This morning there were no fans going and no circulation, so it was really intense - a little nag champa with your potatoes? We asked if they could open the door to air the place out but he said it was a health code violation. This morning we had a breakfast bowl of potatoes with two eggs over easy and bacon with an iced coffee. My friend had a smoked salmon omelet that was $11 and came with .. nothing. No toast or potatoes or fruit. My breakfast bowl was... like soup. We couldn't figure it out. Why was there so much liquid? There was no bacon included as order. I was given a tiny spoon, so I kept spilling all over the place. A cup of iced coffee was $3. Our server was mostly MIA. We just kept waving down other people. Generally, not the best experience. First time, came for brunch. Wrote our name on the list that serves to put yourself in line at 9:55am. Three tables that put their names in after us got seated before us (one was leaving with their leftovers in to go boxes when we were being seated 40 minutes later). After securing a table, a bottle of water was set at our table and the server announced they were out of cups. 10 minutes later cups were sat down and the waitress walked away before we could tell her we were ready to order. 15 more minutes passed and she came back to take our order (keep in mind this is a very small restaurant). we then sat with no server contact for another 30 minutes. Our food came at 11:30 - an hour and 35 minutes after originally putting our name in. One order was wrong but my friend was too terrified that she wouldn't ever receive any food back if she sent this away now because it had taken too long. The food was fine but could have easily been made at home in under 10 minutes. Had to ask for the check at nearly the two hour mark. No apologies, was never asked how the food was or if we needed anything. Will not be returning. read more

Global Cafe is a fairly new restaurant in Lawrence, and one that I think has promise. I have only been for breakfast, but they have tasty pancakes and eggs, and the Breakfast Bowl is delicious and spicy. The coffee is yummy and the staff is super friendly, and willing to accomodate. There is never a wait, and the food is served quickly. The dinner options look really good, well priced, and I hope to try them soon! The decor is comfortable and colorful, and I like their selection of music. The food leans toward Central American, but they have other options as well, including lots of vegetarian choices. This is a restaurant that I hope does well here in the future. read more

I wish I had never set foot there and I certainly will never do again. I took my student out. First, I noticed that they double charged my debit card. We asked to split the bill. Instead, each of us was charged separately for the full amount. Next, I asked to be refunded and they said OK and took my debit card back. Only later in the day did I discover that they had given me back someone else's debit card. Not only that, but the refund went to the wrong person as well. I had to spend 2 hours out of my day dealing with the issue, canceling the card and filing for fraud on the refund they failed to give me. At first I was appalled that the cafe OWNER (so-called) himself, and the girls who work there had no claims or idea of a lost debit card. Note that since I had s/o else's, which I returned, the other party is about to realize they are missing their card. Quadruple mistakes: wrong cards to two people, an unnecessary refund to someone else and a lack of refund to me, plus the original double charging. On top of it all, the cafe owner and the girls acted nonchalant and kept on repeating that it was a busy day and these things happen. With a professional service, you would have been able to locate your card on the same day, and possibly even on the next day. Epic fail and disaster. On top of all this-the server was hovering deliberately to get us to finish up and leave already and brought the check along with the food-which is not very classy, but those are things I'd let slip if not for this ordeal. Sure, mistakes can happen but to commit multiple bundles in one fell swoop and then not own up to it, and act complacent takes the cake. LFK dwellers beware and avoid at all costs. read more

Went here on a beautiful Sunday morning on Mass street with a few friends. We got seated right away, and had waters and really good coffee delivered ASAP. The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive, and the food came out quickly and correctly! I have seen in some of the reviews regarding the not-so-good arepas, and my friend said he'd had them before and was disappointed as well. So, I stuck with a slightly more basic egg choice, the Global quesadilla. If you like black beans, green chiles, eggs, cheese and tortillas....then you'll be a happy camper. It was pretty darn good! Everyone else scarfed down their meals as well--the breakfast bowl also got a thumbs up from my friend. I was early for a show in Lawrence and found myself hungry and could only splurge so much for a meal. Not wanting something greasy or fried, I found Global Cafe. At first I was confused because it looked like they had a counter towards the back that you ordered from (with a full menu above it), but when approaching, a waitress came out and took me to a table. Looking over my options of healthy, global menu options including tilapia, cuban style skewers, or chicken stuffed with ham and cheese (chicken cordon bleu?), I picked a ceasar salad and cup of soup. I know, boring. She brought out the salad with the measliest amount of dressing that I've ever been served, and my tiny cup of soup. I tried my best to make due with the dressing, because she was too busy hanging out in the back to really help me (yes, I'm being sarcastic). The soup was awesome but small, and my salad was lacking dressing, yet the bill still came to $11. I felt cheated. And hungry. Maybe I'll go back and try an entree, but maybe not. read more

I have a serious love of breakfast foods. I found this place one day whilst wandering the streets of Lawrence killing time waiting for my husband. I have actually been there 2 or 3 times now and have enjoyed the food each time I've gone. The food tastes fresh and the bread, ohhhh the bread was delicious. If I remember correctly, it was type of specialty bread from Wheatfields. I especially loved the fresh squeezed oj. Prices are very reasonable if not inexpensive. Wish I was closer, I would make this one of my regular places for breakfast. read more
