I've been here probably 5+ times now. There are problems that almost made me give this 3 stars, but there's enough good to off-set that. I hope they take this to heart because they could be one of the coolest things in Vancouver if they did.
The Best Stuff:
1. Food. The food here is great. The portions are nice and the price is not outrageous. Everything does seem very fresh and colorful.
2. The hot sauce service tray. I love this. Home-made (I think) sriracha, chili paste, pickled peppers, and garlic pepper spread. Try it if you like heat.
3. The environment. It's a good location. It's clean. One of the better, more thoughtful interiors anywhere (yes, including you, Portland). High ceilings, great custom chandelier, a diner style bar, and a big roll up door with outdoor seating too. Things are a little over-designed in some aspects, but it's nice to go to a place that is at least thought out.
The Decent Stuff:
1. Good coffee and beer and tea available. If you want a coffee, try the Thai Iced Coffee. Or get something more traditional. It's all as good as anywhere.
2. Happy Hour is a good value and there are some great, almost entree-sized items on that menu.
3. The lunch menu pricing is fantastic. You nearly get as much as dinner and it's all good.
4. Cleanliness. The place always seems clean. Except last night - see below.
The Sucky Stuff:
1. Staff attitudes. It's not that they're rude or anything, they just don't seem very accommodating. Maybe a better way to describe it is that they are mostly on the younger side (college - late 20's) and almost too-cool-for-school in the way that hipsters don't get along with people. This place would be amazing if the attitudes were brightened up. I guarantee a 20% increase in revenue just with this one adjustment. This place should be PACKED and it's not.
2. Attentiveness. Unfortunately, last night was not a good night. Some regulars (maybe even the owner's family?) came in, sat at the bar and got 5-star treatment while we waited for our food, they're came out in 5 minutes. I kid you not. We waited 40 minutes for our food - and there were only 5 other tables seated at the time. I almost wanted to walk out, and say something, but I was just too polite, tired, and hungry. I guarantee you this happens a lot because the attitude of the cool chick behind the counter and the even cooler dude serving was completely adjusted when they came in.
3. Random little things. It's usually a little darker in here - which doesn't help the dark attitudes of the staff. It's also, therefore, a little colder than maybe it should be. I consistently see the ladies dining with their jackets on still. The bathrooms...it's like the avoid going in there so that they don't have to see that they need attention. I can't speak for the ladies' room, but the men's room needs more attention every hour or so. Just do it. Here's the really sucky thing: I was waiting for my turn, the door unlocks and out comes a guy who then walks straight to the kitchen. I thought...I didn't hear the water running at the end...hmmm. But maybe you can't. Anyway, I go in and he must have really wrecked that thing because there was a nasty toilet, paper towels on the floor and a flooded sink with what appeared to be dark green items floating in it (like someone threw up or a kid was hiding his veggies and tried to put them down there? I don't know. It made it very challenging to wash my hands. This was very frustrating considering how long I was already waiting for my food and getting skipped over already.
The Summary:
I'll chalk up last night to an off-night. They are usually better, but there are things that are consistent that just really piss me off as a customer service guy. When you're sitting on something so good and you don't execute at the point of service and experience, you are failing. This place should have a waiting list. People come down to this area and pack it out...especially on Saturday night! To wit: McMenamins - 40 minute wait. Beaches - 30 minute wait. The Rock - 20 minute wait. Lapellah - 25 minute wait. Panda Express - long line. Red Robin - packed. Fred Meyer parking lot - super busy. This place is arguably better than most of those...people just want the experience those provide.
