I've been here many time. I had the dynamite roll today. It was fine. Not amazing. The gibbon roll was delicious. The Boston was pretty good. The crab Rangoon wasn't very good. It's kind of a divey place which I like. It's cute. The service was good. No complaints there. My daughter likes it so I would come back with her.

Been here many times over several years. I return or order takeout about once per month. Pros: Prompt service with local-family-owned vibes. The food is always delicious. Sushi and cooked meals from the kitchen are fresh and tasty. Lots to choose from on the menu. Cons: A toddler usually makes a couple appearances before being drug back into the kitchen area by a member of staff. Attention to detail lacking (cobwebs on decor, chipped plates, clutter about, wilted lettuce).

We came in here a few nights ago when I was craving sushi. Upon entering, I was a little taken aback by how cluttered and messy the restaurant was. There was only one couple eating which also made me nervous. We ordered chicken teriyaki, spicy tuna roll and Ginban roll. The chicken teriyaki was decent; however, the rolls were terrible. They tasted fishy -- I couldn't eat them. The spicy tuna roll was bright red, as if they just doused the tuna in a bunch of sriracha to attempt to cover up the fishiness. The Ginban was just as fishy even with all of the junk sauces drenched on top. The ingredient list on the menu didn't include a crab stick in this roll but that's what I got. Just awful. This was the most disappointing sushi I have had probably ever, and I have eaten at many sushi restaurants. Run far away.

Have gone to Ginban many times while visiting Phoenix and have historically had a good 4 star experience. This time ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, yam yam and spicy girl rolls, and some ramen. Ramen was fine, but both quantity and quality of the sushi had dropped. The rolls were good, but the fish on the top were small, thin slivers which in the past was not the case. The most disappointing was the sushi and sushi combo. The sushi was mostly rice, ratio to fish was terrible, there was no himachi / yellowtail, looks like the substituted white fish, the pieces overall were small, and quality wasn't very fresh. It wasn't fishy, rather it had no taste. It was a disappointment. 3 stars is giving them the benefit of the prior times I've gone, but if it's like this again then I'll update to 2 stars.

I was craving sushi and saw this place close by that had good reviews. Had my hopes up, but the food was just kinda ..eh. The fish was a little fishy, which isn't good when it comes to sushi. The restaurant was a little cluttered too. The staff was friendly though though. Doubtful I'd try it again.

Great Food and delicious. Service is always great no issues there. Great atmosphere. Food is made from scratch and fresh-

Crunchy Calamari Roll and tuna nigiri

This place is a hidden gem! The sushi is fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. Plus, the prices won't break the bank. The welcoming staff and great atmosphere make it perfect for a date night or a night out with the kids (even our picky eaters) My personal favorites are the chicken katsu, calamari, and tuna nigiri. Honestly, I haven't tried something I didn't like from Ginban.

The interior was trendy, with wood floors and walls, industrial ceiling and top 40 music playing. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll, the Sunshine Roll and an iced tea. In all, it came to $28.72 plus tip. The tea was rather large, which was refreshing for today's restaurants. My lunch arrived in about 15 mins, mostly because a table for four sat down right before me and they were rather needy. The sunshine roll was different than any other sunshine roll I'd had. Their menu descriptions were rather minimal but I was expecting lemon and got masego (roe). It was okay but not what whetted my appetite The tuna roll was a vey pleasant surprise though. I assumed the shrimp tempura would be the only fried aspect but the entire roll was fried after assembly. Very good balance of savory to saucy, heat to cool and soft to crunchy. I'd order that roll again. I'll come back, next time I'm in the area.

What they do well: cheap and fast. When I was there for lunch, it was AYCE for $19.99. You really can't beat that. The service is solid, though not stellar. The selection is pretty good, too! The restaurant is also well maintained. It's always clean and the decor is exactly what you'd expect for Japanese cuisine. Opportunity: the sushi has been falling apart all three times I've been there. It reminds me a little of what it might be like if i made it at home myself and didn't get the sushi rice right. That doesn't adversely affect the flavors, but it's annoying that I can never seem to dip it into the soy sauce and get it into my mouth without losing half the roll. Their service model also makes it so items from the fryer or other appetizers sometimes come out after the sushi rolls. There's no effort to synchronize the back kitchen staff and the sushi bar. This isn't necessarily an issue for me. I'm happy when there's food in front of me. But I could see others feeling like it's a disjointed approach and experience. Like I said, I'll be back. But if you're going to this place, make sure you're managing your expectations.

I may not be able to eat sushi anywhere else after this!…read more I came for the Restaurant Week lunch deal and am so glad I finally made it here. Everything from service to ambiance to food was excellent. And I love that they brought lunch service back to this location! Friday, Saturday, Sunday only and still make a reservation! It was busy! I wanted something fun to drink but non-alcoholic, so the bartender stopped by to help me decide. I got the Miso Sour and it was so good! This had a nice balance of flavors. I started with the Hamachi Crudo which has grapefruit ponzu, lemon mayo, Serrano pepper, and thin cucumber slices. This was so good! Refreshing with just the right amount of spice. Next I enjoyed chopped salad and miso. The salad was very fresh and had a variety of goodies including edamame, purple cabbage, and avocado. The miso is so good!! It was delicate and yet so flavorful. I chose the Yuzu tuna roll option which has spicy tuna and avocado inside, with big eye tuna on top, garnished with micro cilantro, red onion, and yuzu. This was so good! I also thought their ginger stood out - I would bet they make this in house. I can see why this always has such great reviews!

My boyfriend and I came to Shimogamo for Mother's Day and ordered the five-course meal. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing compared to our previous visit. The biggest issue was the service. Our waitress, an older woman, came across as dismissive and unnecessarily rude throughout the evening. When we were seated, she offered complimentary rosé. I accepted a glass, but my boyfriend does not drink alcohol, so he politely asked if he could order a mocktail instead. Before he could even finish, she abruptly responded, "No, you can wait to place an order for that," as if he was trying to substitute the complimentary drink, which he was not. He was simply trying to order a beverage. Later, when the braised beef course was served, my boyfriend politely asked if he could have a spoon or fork. The waitress loudly repeated "A SPOON?" in a mocking tone in front of nearby guests, which made the interaction uncomfortable and embarrassing. As for the food, the five-course menu was average at best and far below what we expected from Shimogamo. The salmon tartare and sushi course were both excellent and showed the quality we remembered from our first visit. However, the remaining courses fell flat. The fried branzino was dry and seemed poorly prepared, despite the promising flavors of capers and cream sauce. The braised short rib felt completely out of place on the menu and lacked refinement it was dry, heavy, and more reminiscent of a chain steakhouse meal than an upscale dining experience. The entire dinner also felt rushed, with little attention to pacing or hospitality. What makes this especially disappointing is that we dined here back in November on a double date and had an incredible experience. We spent over $600 that evening, and the service and food were exceptional. Our waitress at that time was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. She guided us through recommendations, and every dish impressed us. That's why this visit was so surprising. Shimogamo clearly has the ability to provide an outstanding dining experience, which makes the decline in both service and execution even more concerning. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously because this restaurant was once one of our favorites.

There are lots of Asian touches, like the mural of Mount Fuji with cherry blossoms. The menu has seen several kinds of ramen as well as several kinds of hibachi meals and side dishes. It was absolutely delicious, although someone at the table next to us got the hibachi chicken and it smelled and looked soooo good. We also got some gyoza, which was also super yummy. Our server was great. For a while, he was the only one, so he was running hard, but still was attentive and organized. This place is great. We are going back next weekend to try the hibachi. Looking at the menu for some reason I had a feeling ramen was not going to fill me up so I decided to order appetizer. Ordered Geso Yaki (fried squid legs) and gal recommended Tantan ramen if I I like spicy. Geso Yaki came and looked pretty good with some side sweet dipping sauce. It's not really just squid legs had other parts of squid which I didn't mind. It tasted pretty good with slight crisp to it.. Batter had some seasoning which made it tastier. Then my ramen came.. Looked pretty good but portion looked small. But then again for costing $14 can't complain. Broth was nice and hearty and I couldn't quite figure out the flavor. Then I read the description and it said sesame.. Then it made little more sense of the flavor. I definitely would not call it spicy. Ramen noodle was nice and chewy just the way I like it.. Only thing I didnt like was the pork. It was not bad but I prefer the fatty melt in your mouth kind with my ramen. Over all the food was pretty darn good and price was on point. I would definitely come back here again.
