I've been here many time. I had the dynamite roll today. It was fine. Not amazing. The gibbon roll was delicious. The Boston was pretty good. The crab Rangoon wasn't very good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's kind of a divey place which I like. It's cute.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was good. No complaints there. My daughter likes it so I would come back with her.

Been here many times over several years. I return or order takeout about once per month. Pros: Prompt service with local-family-owned vibes. The food is always delicious. Sushi and cooked meals from the kitchen are fresh and tasty. Lots to choose from on the menu. Cons: A toddler usually makes a couple appearances before being drug back into the kitchen area by a member of staff. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Attention to detail lacking (cobwebs on decor, chipped plates, clutter about, wilted lettuce).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

We came in here a few nights ago when I was craving sushi. Upon entering, I was a little taken aback by how cluttered and messy the restaurant was. There was only one couple eating which also made me nervous. We ordered chicken teriyaki, spicy tuna roll and Ginban roll. The chicken teriyaki was decent; however, the rolls were terrible. They tasted fishy -- I couldn't eat them. The spicy tuna roll was bright red, as if they just doused the tuna in a bunch of sriracha to attempt to cover up the fishiness. The Ginban was just as fishy even with all of the junk sauces drenched on top. The ingredient list on the menu didn't include a crab stick in this roll but that's what I got. Just awful. This was the most disappointing sushi I have had probably ever, and I have eaten at many sushi restaurants. Run far away.

Have gone to Ginban many times while visiting Phoenix and have historically had a good 4 star experience. This time ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, yam yam and spicy girl rolls, and some ramen. Ramen was fine, but both quantity and quality of the sushi had dropped. The rolls were good, but the fish on the top were small, thin slivers which in the past was not the case. The most disappointing was the sushi and sushi combo. The sushi was mostly rice, ratio to fish was terrible, there was no himachi / yellowtail, looks like the substituted white fish, the pieces overall were small, and quality wasn't very fresh. It wasn't fishy, rather it had no taste. It was a disappointment. 3 stars is giving them the benefit of the prior times I've gone, but if it's like this again then I'll update to 2 stars.

I was craving sushi and saw this place close by that had good reviews. Had my hopes up, but the food was just kinda ..eh. The fish was a little fishy, which isn't good when it comes to sushi. The restaurant was a little cluttered too. The staff was friendly though though. Doubtful I'd try it again.

Oh my word!! We didn't know their rolls were going to be so big or we wouldn't have ordered so much. Lol. Great mistake to have!! Every last roll was super good. To be honest, I don't remember what we ordered but, they were all worth it. They each carried such umami flavor and hit every single taste bud! We ordered to go. The only downside was, it took 1 hour and 45 minutes to get our order. Had we known this would have been the timeframe, we would've placed the order well in advance. But again, it was worth every minute we waited. We would definitely go back. However, we would not order as much. It took us three days to finish it.

We arrived a little after 5pm and the restaurant was mostly empty. But in the next 20 minutes it filled up and there was open sitting at the bar only. The mood was initially quiet but quickly turned more up beat as the restaurant filled and pop rock music was playing. We asked our waiter a few questions about a few of their rolls and he was very helpful with guidance and recommendations. We ordered Salmon Lemon, Spicy Tuna, Salmon Avocado Maki and California rolls to share for two. This restaurant uses purple rice rather than traditional white rice. This was the first time we have tried a sushi roll made with purple rice and we both loved it. It added a nutty flavor and hearty texture. Purple rice is similar to wild rice and far nutritionally superior to white rice with more antioxidant and fiber. Shortly after we ordered we were served a potsticker dish. I mentioned that we did not order the item and were informed the appetizer was complementary. We thanked the server and tasted the dish. The potstickers were nicely pan fried and had a great crust and flavorful chicken filling. Delicious! About five minutes later our rolls were delivered. All were fresh tasting and delicious. Our favorite was the Salmon Lemon roll. We loved the pop the lemon added. Honorable mentions to the Spicy Tuna roll, very well done, excellent balance of heat and flavors. We truly enjoyed our dining experience and look forward to returning. Highly recommended for a quality sushi experience!

I was dining solo and had no trouble finding a seat since there's plenty of seating throughout the restaurant. That said, I was surprised by how quickly the place started filling up after opening, which is always a good sign. One of the first things I noticed was the large sushi bar and being able to watch the sushi chefs at work. There were five of them, which I took as a sure sign this place gets busy. I ordered the spider roll, salmon avocado roll, and steamed edamame. Everything was fresh, well-prepared, and exactly what I was hoping for. One unique thing about Kodo is their rice blend. They use a combination of black and white rice, which gives the sushi a distinctive purple color. It's not something you see every day, and it definitely makes their sushi stand out. I also have a food allergy, and the staff handled it carefully and without any issues. They offer fountain drinks, which I always prefer. And I liked their plastic to-go container. It kept my leftovers from getting soggy by next day. Easy five stars.

We were nearby for a show, and decided to stop in on a Wednesday evening for a late dinner with some friends. They have a good happy hour menu, and my friends ordered off there, but I was craving sushi so I got the nigiri omakase. It came with miso soup, which I enjoyed, definitely hard to go wrong there. The sushi itself was decent, nothing crazy, but definitely better than grocery store quality. The tuna and salmon pieces were a little fishy, maybe not the freshest, but it was also quite late (~10pm) so I wasn't expecting too much. Beautifully presented, and the cuts were quite large which was nice! The food came out pretty fast, and the service was pleasant. The restaurant vibes are pretty dark, and moody. The bathroom was kind of scary personally, super dark and a little messy, so I decided to wait till I got home. Overall, a solid experience, and definitely a good choice if I am in the area.

Overall, I really enjoyed it, although the eel was probably my least favorite of the flight just personal preference. The crispy tuna rice was easily the star of the meal! Crispy, flavorful, and the textures worked so well together. I would 100% order that again. The ramen, however, was just okay for me. It wasn't bad or inedible, but the broth was lacking that rich, deep flavor I look for in a good bowl of ramen. A little more depth and seasoning would really take it to the next level. The service was honestly one of the highlights. Our waiter was super friendly, cool, and attentive without hovering, which I always appreciate. Overall, there were definitely more hits than misses. The service- pretty poor. I was sat in the bar at the back but I basically sat there for a good 5 minutes and nothing. Never got my water refilled, had to flag them down to put in more food, that sorta thing. The vibes- thought the bar was pretty lit and is prob pretty fun during HH. The food- overpriced for what you get and portion size while the fish and flavors being a smidge above average. I left still hungry after getting the gold omakase, bad and buri roll, and hamachi crudo. The hamachi was the best part of the meal but I'd still expect at least 5 pieces for the price. Anyways, this spot will hit the spot if you have a sushi craving. I can't vouch for the drinks but I assume it more than checks the box in that regard judging by the menu, selection, and vibe.
