Don't tell your service staff to not have substitutions on busy nights. We came in at 9:30 and the place was half full and most were already eating. I didn't want collard greens on my plate and ask not to have them. To me, they are gross. But they came anyways and the water from them got on my fried chicken. My mashed potatoes came about 5-7 minutes later. They obviously ran out and made a quick batch. They were runny with too much milk in them. And no flavor. Server was a ghost. I have never had a restaurant serve a Hamburger and French fries and then say that they have no Ketchup. Hamburger was burnt/dry and extremely salty with a single wilted slice of lettuce and a smear of pimento cheese. I came here for brunch and service was great. The food was fine, nothing special. I think the overall Southern influence on the menu is quite minimal. No grits on the brunch menu at all is miss. Jesus is a unique restaurant in State College. You won't find too many other restaurants like it in happy Valley. And offers things that I feel like you don't find at most restaurants whether that's good or bad. It depends on the kind of person you are. They deal with a good bar and if it's nice out, they have a decent size patio. I cannot say it's my favorite restaurant in the world, but it's good if you are interested in what it offers, I do like their appetizers, but I feel like their menu changes way too much things that used to be on the menu like the mahi tacos or delicious. I don't know why they took it off the menu, but they're still a good restaurant they have a good beverage menu from beer and beyond if you're downtown it's just a catalyst ride away to get to this W. College Ave. restaurant if you're looking for a good meal that sometimes gets overlooked in State College you may want to check this one out but it won't be cheap. read more

Well to start our Server DJ was absolutely incredible. Always friendly and endlessly checking in but also not being over bearing at the same time. The bruschetta and biscuits were incredible. The gumbo was good if you like gumbo. The mac and cheese was decent but not incredible. The two stars of the show were the shrimp and grits as well as their creme brulee specialty they had that days The only negative of the entire experience was the bayou steak. It just wasn't very good. The green beans were undercooked, but the mashed potatoes were really good. All things considered it was amazing and well worth it. OVERPRICED and UNDERWHELMING !!! I ordered collard greens and buttermilk biscuits. The greens tasted rather boring ,nothing interesting in the preparation. The biscuits were awful. They were burnt, tasteless and dry. And to make matters worse they charged for jam for those dried burnt biscuits.The overpriced beet salad only had 3 small cubes of beets in it and the presentation was not appealing. Beautifully decorated both inside and out, we loved the vibe at Gigi's. We sat on the porch and noticed all the Southern details such as the chandeliers draped with Spanish moss and their sign with flowing water. Our server Natalie, a recent PSU grad, was terrific and made sure to take care of us. We started with their chipotle deviled eggs which were great to share as there were 4. The onion soup was also delicious and not overly salty or cheesy. Gigi's Signature Shrimp and Grits had plenty of blackened shrimp, and the tomato and wilted spinach added to the grits although I would have liked a little more spice/heat. We were party of 3 on Friday afternoon, place was not busy at all but thats expected at that time of the day. Really nice ambiance and service was excellent. They have a nice private room that was setup for a party, looked really nice setup. The food was great as well, we had the Charleston Twin Grab cakes. Shrimp and grits were a great homage to southern cuisine but the cajun chicken pasta lacked a kick and was more of a plain tomato pasta with tough chicken. Gigi's burger was a nicely done burger and the chips it came with were great, compared to the mahi tacos with a single strip of mahi laid on top. Recommend adding the crabcake as a side to your entree rather than buying the whole entree imo. As for soups, loved the french onion soup, but was a bit disappointed by the comparatively bland gumbo. The deviled eggs were strictly OK, although the baked Brie was delicious. The entrees, again, not what I expected. The shrimp carbonara didn't have a carbonara sauce, which is made with whiskey eggs. Instead, it was a concoction made with liquidy cream. My daughter's pasta, apparently, was better. The cocktails were a hit or miss. My coffee martini was more coffee than martini, whereas my wife and daughter's cocktails were overloaded with alcohol. So, no, not good cocktails. Service was strictly by the book. Our server didn't make us feel special, although we informed him that we were there to celebrate our daughter's birthday. Many of the old favorites that made it a Southern-style restaurant are replaced with costly items. The new pricing seems as if they think they are in NYC, not central PA. $50-$65 for steak, $11 for a cup of soup, $19 for a crab cake that was the size of a scallop... I got a cup of crab soup which was just ok. For my main, I got the heirloom salad. The tomatoes were mealy and the cheese was hard. My friend got a cup of gazpacho, which she liked a lot, and a tiny, $19 crab cake. We both got a sauvignon blanc--$20 each. That's a glass, not a bottle. I was willing to pay for quality and tasty food, but nothing was very good and I walked out $60 poorer and still hungry. We went there for a special occasion for brunch. The buffet was empty and the food wasn't brought out in a sufficient timeframe for us to eat. We wanted a simple cup of coffee and the coffee was never brewed during the hour and a half we dined, though we were told they would. They later said they never got around it. We spent a fortune for our special celebration and the food and service was disappointing. Save yourself and go somewhere reliable. Gigi's is an outstanding choice for a classy but comfortable dinner in State College! We loved the eclectic dining rooms throughout the restaurant and ample seating. Every room seemed to have its own unique style and atmosphere. We sat on the outside patio on graduation weekend, and although the weather was cold and wet, this expansion room had plenty of roof heaters to keep the room comfortable. When the weather is nicer, they open the doors open to be open air. Service was very pleasant and attentive. Food across the board was great! I had the shrimp and grits and thought it was perfectly prepared. Their drink options were very creative. Desserts looked good too. Only a few minutes outside of downtown State College on West College Ave, Gigi's is worth a visit to enjoy some good, southern style food! read more

We have visited Gigi's for weekend brunch a couple of times and it has been a very nice experience. The food is good and the ambience is quite nice. Sometimes the line at the buffet can get long but it's not been off putting. I'm not sure what all the hype is about. The food is just OK, nothing spectacular. The gumbo with crawfish was probably the best thing we had. We got sick from the creme brulee. Short ribs were not great. Salmon was average. No honey flavor. We have been twice. We sat by the tables in the bar area once and on the patio once. Have not sat towards the front. Waitstaff was ok. I was surprised that the parking lot wasn't full on graduation weekend. Maybe they limited the number of reservations. read more

Since I knew State College would be packed with everyone moving back to school, I made a reservation based on my daughter's suggestion and we were not disappointed. Food was great and service was very good. Started with the biscuits and fried green tomato bruschetta - so, so good! Entrees were the artichoke and asiago ravioli and the mahi mahi tacos. Portions were quite large and everything was delicious. Peach sangria was their special drink and it was fantastic. Shared a strawberry shortcake dessert - so good! Outstanding brunch! I enjoyed a Bloody Mary with the candied bacon, sans deviled eggs since I planned to eat eggs for brunch. My honey and I both had the Low Country Strudel and holy heck... what a naughty and divine concoction! Essentially it is scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, peppers and onions and home fries wrapped in a strudel pastry, with country sausage gravy and beer cheese (got mine on the side). Oof. Delicious! I recently visited Gigi's for the first time during my bachelorette party weekend and all of us can't stop talking about how amazing it is. The food menu had so many choices and it was hard to pick what to order -- I had a southern punch cocktail that was delicious and my friend's peach margarita was amazing. We all shared the biscuits with honey butter and the house salad was one of the best I've had -- pickled red onion, goat cheese, candied pecans and a peach balsamic vinaigrette! For my meal I had the southern shrimp carbonara and it was perfect -- our party ordered the seasonal seafood special, burgers, fish tacos, sandwiches and pasta and no one had a single complaint. Aside from the food, I love southern culture and have spent some time in the south and this place -- from the music, the food, the decor and the overall ambience -- truly feels southern. We had a very enjoyable dinner at Gigi's recently on a Saturday night. I do recommend reservations on the weekend, especially when PSU is in session. Our server Jennifer was amazing with the right balance of friendliness and professionalism that contributed to our dining experience! Gigi's menu is not overly extensive, but offers a very nice variety of items to meet most everyone's tastes. Fresh seafood and raw bar are two of their selling points and if you sign-up for their mailing list online you receive a free half dozen oysters! On this visit we started off with the calamari appetizer, which was delicious- lightly breaded and buttery-cooked perfectly! I had the grouper entrée, which was pan seared, very flavorful, and served with red rice/andouille sausage. My wife had the Mascarpone Ravioli with roasted red peppers and a vodka sauce. Both dishes were very good! While we had a very nice visit and plan to return to try other items, the one thing that took away from our visit was the cleanliness of the upholstered chairs. While the upholstered chairs add a nice southern feel to the place, over time everyone touching the chair back will cause it to become dirty. It was as if the kitchen staff had mistaken the restaurant for a rock concert venue, their enthusiasm for music eclipsing their concern for the dining experience of their patrons. Despite the unwelcome soundtrack, I remained hopeful, determined to let the food be the star of the show. Unfortunately, my optimism was soon misplaced. The restaurant was half-full at best, but we were told reservations were tight. ??? It was obvious, we were at the end of their service as not all the food was freshly replenished and the desserts were not replenished at all but we still paid the same price as everyone else for a barely average brunch display. Been there a couple of times and the food is always good! I'm from the south so I feel a little biased but it's good southern food in Pennsylvania. Most recently I've gotten the shrimp and grits, Cobb salad, pimento dip, and the salmon. I feel like Gigi's is one of the nicer restaurants at penn state and the service is great. I recently visited Gigi's with a group of friends for lunch. I had high expectations based on how others in the group talked this place up. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice and the staff seemed great. Our server was attentive and took care of the table well. The food was good, but not quite what I expected, especially with the high end prices they were charging. There was absolutely no wow factor that should be there when you are paying top dollar $30 for lunch in State College. I have had better meals for less. Nice place, decent food, but overpriced.
