After three solid days of seafood in PEI, we wrapped up our vacation in Montreal with a reservation at Gibbys for steak and cocktails. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Walking in, the atmosphere struck me--it's dark and cozy, but still well lit enough to feel inviting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were seated right away. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was a little worried about how we were dressed, but the vibe turned out to be pretty flexible.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We saw everything from nicely dressed couples to a bachelor party--complete with the groom-to-be in a hotdog costume! The menu was straightforward but impressive. Every entrée comes with your choice of a Gibbys salad or a wedge salad with blue cheese, plus a potato (do yourself a favor and get the Monte Carlo--you'll thank me later). For my appetizer, I ordered the French onion soup. I've said before that certain restaurants have the "best" one, but this version may actually take the crown. It wasn't oily, and it was perfectly topped with a generous, melty layer of cheese--the way French onion soup should be. I followed that with the Gibbys salad and a 12-ounce filet. I love a good filet, and this one hit the mark. My husband went for the lamb with the wedge salad and enjoyed both thoroughly. By the end, we were far too stuffed for dessert, so we called it a night. [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you're looking to splurge on a memorable, romantic dinner in Montreal, Gibbys is the place to go[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Perfect steakhouse for a Vieux Montreal visit.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Walking distance from Hotel Nelligan and the Notre Dame Cathedral. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance and service were fabulous.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Picture dark cozy elegant steakhouse.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food and drinks? Fabulous. I had the Arctic Char (I was steaked-out) and my date had the prime rib. Both were perfect. We also ordered Old Fashioned Gibbys as cocktails with our meals that arrived in take-home flasks. Not cheap, but worth it! So, we each had two!

Delicious food and great ambiance! The rib eye and Diane steak were amazing! Definitely worth it if you want to enjoy a great steakhouse!

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. Gibbys has been our go-to steakhouse in Montreal for 20 years...which makes me feel old. LOL All kidding aside, the food, ambiance, and service are top-notch. Prices have gone up significantly, so it's now an annual special-occasion treat, but still our favorite over Moishe's and La Queue de Cheval. Bonus: sides are included here, unlike the competition. Located in Place d'Youville in an old stable, the stone walls and dark wood give it a formal look with a relaxed vibe. You can actually have a conversation without shouting. We've tried many dishes, and everything has always been excellent. This place holds so many memories for us--we'll definitely keep coming back. Pro tips: 1. Ask for extra steak spices on the side, it's mixed with olive oil and garlic. You're welcome. 2. Love anchovies? They'll top your salad if you ask. 3. No room for dessert? Complimentary chocolate mint squares come with the meal. 4. Love the flavors? Buy their steak spices, chicken spices, or salad dressing ($6 each) to take home.

If I had to choose only one place to return to when I visit Montreal again, it would be Gibbys. The service, atmosphere and food were a winning combo. We ordered more food and drinks, but was too busy stuffing my face with good food to take all the photos. Yes that's how good this place is. Perfect place for celebrating life milestones! Reservations for this place is highly recommended, noise levels are moderate and perfect group size is 4 people even though they are able to accommodate my group of 8 people with a reservation.

    Pickle, not bread, service!

In Montreal on business and had an unusual compulsion for a good steak and found this place near my hotel and figured why not?! Wow! Then I ended up not even ordered steak cooked in a traditional way. There was just too much goodness on the menu and I wasn't as hungry as I would want to be for a full meal of steak and big sides, so I tried the appetizers, which turned out fine, but still too much food. The burrata was delicious! Pears, I believe, with all the expected friends. That was probably enough for me, but I didn't know it when I ordered, so then the steak tartare came and it was huge for one person. Wish I hadn't eaten one of the large pickles that came as table service! Alas, I went away overstuffed, but the service was excellent, the ambiance was very nice, the noise level was completely tolerable, and the value was good. I'd love to come back here next time I'm in town.

Great evening at Gibby's! Really liked the ambiance and the service was above and beyond. We started with the bread and pickles. The bread wasn't as warm as I hoped, but tasty. I didn't try the pickles because I don't like pickles in general. We got oysters as our appetizers - while they were good, they were a little one-note and not the best we had had in the city. We ordered one giant 22 oz rib steak to share between the two of us- what was really nice is that they brought us both our own salads (Gibbys salad, which had a great dressing), and our own side potatoes. I got the fries, which were standard, and Chris got the baked potato. The lemon sorbet palate cleaner was refreshing and a lovely addition to the dinner. The steak was a perfectly cooked medium rare steak with fantastic quality and flavor. We also ordered a lobster tail which was perfect too. Dessert was their chocolate mousse cake (I forget the official name of it). It was heavenly and decadent. Perfect for 2 people. My partner also ordered a half oz pour of the Louis XIII, which was certainly an experience!! Again, fantastic service. The night ended with some chocolate mint wafers, and our server took a Polaroid of us as a souvenir :) We had a great time at Gibby's. A star lost for just some minor stuff, but overall a great experience!

I took my husband here for his birthday and was very excited for him to be surprised by cake, but unfortunately they missed this detail in our booking reservation :(. We ordered the sets for steak and the beef Wellington. It was my first time ever having a beef Wellington and the pastry paired with my medium rare steak was *chefs kiss*. The buttery, flaky, savory from the pastry paired so well with the juiciness of the steak! My husbands steak was just ok, good sear but nothing to write home about. Our meals were filling and I liked that the set meal comes with a refreshing salad to start, followed by a lemon sherbet interestingly enough. Loved the generous serving sizes and our waiter frequently checked in on us. The restaurant isn't too fancy, but was quite busy. You will definitely need reservations. Overall, it was a solid steak house but didn't blow me away.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]We really appreciated this classic steakhouse vibe service was traditional and eight out of 10.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Cut of steak had decent marbling they were to order and we were happy with the quality. For $50 for the fixed price menu, I want to reemphasize the value is definitely there an experience is more than worth it along with the quality of food. The wine choice had a good pairing option relatively affordable standard across the city. We had the Bordeaux $15 a glass pretty normal.

A must visit steakhouse if you're visiting Montreal. Menu is pricey, so don't get caught off guard, but the service and quality are top notch. By far the best escargot we've ever had, melt in your mouth. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Vibe can be kind of loud depending on the crowd (which is typically very busy) but the atmosphere is cool in a very old building.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Medium rare was more like medium, but the steak quality was still fantastic.

Blue wedge salad and regular salad (partners food)
    Nicole M.

I don't have the prettiest photos, but Gibby's was amazing. All the food I had in Montreal is really good but this place had very good beef Wellington, the gravy was very flavorful, the service is quick. I chose the blue cheese wedge salad because everyone online recommended it, but in my opinion, the regular salad is better (preferred the dressing on that). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance is very nice but people there were also in regular clothes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The potato on the side was so good too. I left with a lot of leftovers. If I lived here I think I'd come here all the time.

This place was amazing! Loved the complimentary fresh bread and pickles. The blue cheese wedge salad was incredible and comes with your meal. My wild salmon was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The service was top notch as well. Highly recommend if you're in Old Town Montreal.

Complimentary homemade cake for our anniversary

Lovely experience at Gibby's for our anniversary. Make sure to book in advance to get a complimentary cake. It was very delicious and the perfect size. Service is wonderful! Very attentive and they give you complimentary pickles and bread before your meal. Steaks are above average but not worth the prices in my opinion. A wonderful experience nevertheless. 4/5 stars.

We were seated at a lovely table for two by a window. The service at first was a bit slow, but that was understandable given how busy the restaurant was. Our server, Yan, was incredibly personable. He had excellent suggestions for dinner. We each started with cocktails, and enjoyed the ambiance. There was a live band, but we were in a different room. It wasn't loud like you would expect. 5/5 service. Beef Tartare: 5/5. This was an excellent start. The appetizer sizing was a little small for two people. If you want a little more, I'd recommend the entree size. It comes with fries. But it was delicious. The crostini's that came with it were a little overpowering, but the tartare itself was delicious. Duck Confit: 5/5. This duck was INCREDIBLE. Perfectly cooked, crispy skin, tender and juicy flavor. An incredible sauce. Delicious veggies and potatoes. The only thing I did not like about this dish was how quickly we ate it! Dessert (not pictured): 5/5. We had a chocolate pyramid with hazelnuts and chocolate mousse. Delicious. I do recommend making a reservation on open table prior to coming. Here is what I think of the food: Seasoning is generally saltier but not too overly. Escargot or the snails is yummy. It comes with the option of cheese on top. Dressed heavy with olive oil and garlic. They remove the shell so it makes it approachable if you were nervous about trying. Cheese & Charcuterie board is as what you imagined. It can't go wrong. Rack of Lamb was good. I do recommend highly. It comes with our 4-5 bones worth of protein with potatoes & veggies. Lost track of how many bones because it was eaten so fast. Duck confit was average. Let me explain, duck was average but the amount of spinach I gotten and how potatoes on the plate was good. Sides out shine the protein here. Side of Foie Gras was perfect because I was worried about having too much food. It did come on a small plate because it's a side dish and it was fatty and salty. Intermission was the best cocktail of the night. Fruity with a star anise on top so you smell it while drinking it because it was so close to your nose. Jazz District was okay. Overall, I do think this restaurant site fairly between 4&5 stars. Do try it. I would come back for special occasions and it's not an every night meal.

Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal.
