    Porterhouse

Another perfect experience. While Moshies is not going to set the culinary world on fire with innovative dishes, they deliver very fresh and tasty salads. Well executed Porter houses and a solid staple of sides. Service is on point each time my preference is for the rear of the restaurant away from the TV in the bar area

THE BIG: Oldest steakhouse in Montreal and located in the International district. Cozy and homey decor inside. Right next to the W Hotel. Street parking or parking garages are available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We were staying closeby at the W hotel and decided to eat here for dinner. Since we were a big party, we got a fancy room and had a bunch of sides delivered before ordering our mains. There were a few gigantic tomahawk specials where a few of us guys took the liberty to share amongst the three. One of us got the japanese wagyu which came in 6 tiny pieces but damn was it delicioius. For wines, they had a pretty great selection of bordeaux and burgundys. We opted for a bordeaux first before moving into a nice pinot afterwards. The sides were great with carpaccio, oysters, gigantic shrimp, fries and salad. Another fun thing was that we got to choose our steak knives as the waiters came around for us to choose. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Ultimately the damage done here was around $1200 CAD for an extravagant meal but also split between 10 guys. Steaks and wine were great.

Moishes is a steakhouse that has existed since 1938, approaching ninety years history in Montreal as of this review, but still putting in the effort and not resting on its laurels. Normally it's easier to find fault in some way or another, but here at Moishes, that is not the case. They get so many things right and execute on such a level, that I am putting Moishes in the lofty realm of my top traditional steakhouses, even when measured against the best traditional steakhouses of NYC, my hometown. My concierge recommended Moishes and it was spot on, getting high marks from the door, where we were immediately seated in this beautiful dining room with a suspended tin ceiling and tastefully streamlined and modern chandeliers hanging from that suspended ceiling. Floor to ceiling windows add the modern and mid-century modern touch, casting plenty of calming light throughout. The atmosphere is muted with the fabric, woodwork, and colors enveloping the patron in a very sophisticated and subtle splendor that is a feast for the eyes as much as it will be for your palate. There are multiple dining area and outdoor seating, providing more than ample capacity, and even some private dining areas beyond view from what I could observe. They can handle individuals and couples to large parties with ease here, but I do not have the impression it will ever be loud here. Our server, Jeremie, patiently took our orders and had the sommelier advise us properly on a bottle of wine, a Bordeaux blend whose tannins were not overshadowing, pairing well with the steak to come. First, take note of the bread they serve and particularly the cole slaw and pickles. The slaw is fresh and has the taste of a sweet vinegar that pairs mightily with the largest and greenest pickles you can find. These pickles are so fresh and the bright green color is of another variety. The brine is slightly salty, but just within bounds as to be forgiven when the crisp freshness is in such abundance, paired with the sweet slaw. We are already in unforgettable territory at just the pickles and slaw! I order the 23oz Carre d'Agneau tomahawk style Alberta lamb chops. Before your main course is served, your server will present to you your choice of steak knives with wooden, pearlescent or metal handles, one of which is the French curved and slender steak knife. The lamb chops are served in three meaty and satisfying pairs. These chops are unmatched in my culinary memory, save for a friend who makes them at her house on the east end of Long Island, NY. I ordered them medium and they were still so very tender and juicy. The flavor from the bones and trimmed and rendered fat into the meat was inescapably riveting. I was unforgettably silenced. These will be on repeat every single time I revisit Moishes! The Monte Carlo potatoes are also quite memorable. They mix the potato with sour cream or butter, with herbs, and then bake it to a crisp outside, served in an oval ceramic dish. The basic meat and potatoes pairing is complete and so well executed. Nothing has needed any additions to this point. The lamb needs no mint or other sauce. The potatoes need no salt or pepper. The kitchen is crushing it and meanwhile the slaw and pickles offer that crisp acidic counterpoint that keeps everything in balance and washed down with a great wine. Are you feeling the harmony and nirvana? Aside from the level of brine in these beautiful pickles, the only thing my friend and I could point out was the seat height is positioned a touch low relative to the table height. Nothing too bad, but we both noticed it, but subtle enough that you may not notice, unless you read this review and are tipped off. I ordered the 22oz Cote de Boeuf and the seldom seen 18oz bone in Filet Mignon OS to go. Both of them were ordered medium rare to go and the Cote de Boeuf had a peppercorn sauce on the side. The Cote de Boeuf was the only one that benefitted from a sauce when I had it back home. It was not as tender as the others, but still very good. It ranked third. The bone in Filet Mignon was beautiful. I had never had the bone in variety of filet mignon and it was great to experience this thicker cut that left the flavor of the bone and richness of the trimmed fat cap intact, both of which enhanced the tenderness and flavor when I experienced it in NYC. The bone in Filet ranked second behind the lamb chops. I finished the meal at Moishes with the dulce de leche drizzled vanilla ice cream with chocolate chunks. It was overkill, but it offered a closing sweet chapter to a savory book, which, with taxes and tip, will run you a little over $420 CAD. Moishes is a splurge, but I continued to eat back home for the next two or three days recalling why I would return to Moishes and for far less than it would cost me in NYC. Moishes is 4.8 stars and one of the highest ratings I have ever reviewed! Come and find out for yourself and let me know.

Came to celebrate a birthday and to also indulge in a delicious steak dinner while visiting on vacation. Turned out to be one of the best experiences and steak dinners I have ever had...definitely ranks in my top 5 of steak houses I've been to. We were greeted right as we walked in by the hostess staff and quickly taken to our table. Our waiter (I can't remember his name) greeted us quickly and brought us an unusual starter: whole pickles, coleslaw, and delicious bread. We were all surprised to get the pickles and coleslaw but they were delicious and an awesome treat to start with. For starters we got the escargot (no pic) but it was delicious and worth ordering. For our mains we order the ribeye, filet, and octopus. The steaks were delicious, cooked to perfection, like I said def in my top 5 for steaks, and accompanied by chimichurri and a yummy seasoning to add to the steaks. The octopus was also very good and tasty. We got asparagus and mushrooms to share with the table. Overall experience was awesome, excellent service, great ambiance, and I would totally recommend this place to anyone looking for a great time and amazing food.

This meal will go down in history for me as one of the best that we had on our trip to Montreal. You absolutely must get the beef tartare it is exquisite. Everything we ordered was honestly. The vibe and decor is top notch. One of the most beautiful bar areas I've seen in awhile. The sauce that comes with the shrimp cocktail and the sauce that comes with the steak frites were particularly delicious. Our entire meal was pure perfection and every Canadian dollar was well spent. They have a lunch prefix that is such a great deal. if you're traveling to Montreal, you do not want to skip Moishes

Highly recommend the escargot! Excellent ribeye! Extraordinary service! A must when in Montreal!

5 stars! Excellent and engaged service. The food is a must when visiting Montreal! Belvedere martini topped it all off!

Food and service both top notch. We got the grilled shrimp appetizer. Really enjoyed it. For the main we got the Monte Carlo potato, steak, and salmon. Steak was perfectly cooked, and huge. The Monte Carlo potato was also delicious. Super kid friendly. They provided

Came here for a large gathering & we were hosted in the back private room. We had such a blast. The private bar was chic and well orchestrated. The service was excellent & everything ran smoothly. We had the Caesar salad and beef tartare for an appetizer, as well as giant pickles and coleslaw. I'll dream about that coleslaw forever. For dinner, I opted for a filet mignon. My husband had ribeye and some lamb chops; he rated the lamb better than the ribeye, but filet was top tier. I would absolutely go back for a more intimate gathering, but highly recommend this spot for large parties/corporate events!

I came here for a late lunch and was very impressed with the customer service I was greeted with and then the decor was beautiful. I sat at the bar and had a drink the bartender made. It was pretty good. It had mezcal, pineapple juice, bitters, and some other things in it. I ordered the lobster Mac & cheese and the grilled wild shrimp. Both were really good! My only complaint about the Mac & cheese was it was a little greasy/oily but still very tasty. Based on the food I had, the customer service, and the ambiance, I would return to try other things.

I am so very happy - and relieved, quite frankly, - that Moishe's has reopened after many years of closure. And not only has it reopened (albeit in a new location), but dare I say, it's as good - or even (gasp!) better - than before! Those who know me and my family know that Moishe's has been an integral part of my family's history. Moishe's was a mainstay on The Main (Blvd. St. Laurent) for decades. My grandparents dined there. My parents dined there. My sisters and I were brought there as toddlers and children and teenagers for special meals. In later years, my parents dined there every Saturday, at the same seat by the window. It was our family restaurant. The owner and manager and waitstaff knew more about my family history than I did. They were like family. It was a real and personal loss to my parents when they closed. (My dad was around 90 at the time). So we were all elated to hear of its reopening, now on Victoria Square. I booked reservations for my dad's 94th birthday dinner here, noting it's important to have a table in the "traditional " room. You see, the new Moishe's has different rooms, the first one being a throwback to the old restaurant on St. Laurent. And I made it a point to note when making the reservation that it was my dad's birthday. We dined there last night. And I give credit where credit is due. I really worried that the place would let us down (since the old place was so special to us all). But wow, it was wonderful. In every way: the new site and decor, the service and the food. I hesitate to say this, but it was even better than before. The new site has valet parking (nice!), and they give you a number to text 15 minutes before you're ready to leave, so your vehicle is waiting for you right in front when you leave. (Super nice valet guys, too. Bonus!). The interior is better than I could have imagined. The vestibule/anteroom has almost a neighborhood bottega vibe, with graphic Moishe's wallpaper on the walls and corridor ceiling, and the ceiling is strung with a canopy of patio lighting. Immediately it feels inviting but "cool". Inside, there's a spectacular bar area to your left, delineated by hanging greenery and with a phenomenal glass central chandelier. Very retro, and reminiscent of a past, more glamorous era, for sure. And to the right is the cavernous restaurant dining room, with the traditional "room 1" being the first area. I loved this dining area so much. It was more modern than the past Moishe's, to be sure, with none of the fussy white linen tablecloths or candles, but instead wooden tabletops, round tables interspersed with large booths, and very modern, sleek table lighting fixtures. I loved the details that were a clear homage to the earlier site: the dark wood paneled walls, the metal coffered ceiling tiles, the 20's glass chandeliers. They incorporated the old with the new, and it felt fresh while still retaining the old charm. The owners are new now, but the manager came up to my dad and chatted him up and wished him the happiest of birthdays and made my dad feel special, like the old Moishe's people would do. And our server was wonderful. And they made my dad feel like a king. I can't tell you how heartwarming this was to me. Now for the food. I have to say, prices have increased, and it's extremely pricey here. More so than before. But even I was the first to admit, I didn't think the old Moishe's had the best steaks (my dad would disagree, but his opinions are heavily biased by nostalgia). THIS new Moishe's DOES have some of the best steaks I have ever had. We all had 19-oz. rib eyes, and they were cooked to PERFECTION. and seasoned TO PERFECTION. We also shared a Monte Carlo potato (as good as ever), spinach (as good as ever), and they brought the table their famous pickles and coleslaw and bread. (SO glad these side dishes remained the same!). And they brought my dad a millefeuille for dessert with a candle and, not only was that the nicest gesture, but omg it was a bloody amazingly delicious dessert: super light and fresh whipped cream with the flakiest of pastry and strawberry garnishes. The meal couldn't have been better. The people couldn't have been nicer. And the restaurant couldn't have been better,in any way.t

The new location of the revitalized Moishes institution is gorgeous. Immediately upon entering you walk into a hallway of cartoon nostalgia. A brief history of modern Montreal brought to life. The dining room is stunning. From the warm chairs to the beautiful map of the old neighbourhood up on the wall. The food isn't that great... but the service is wonderful, the setting is perfect for special occasions, and the wine list is interesting. What's sort of missing is the vibe of the old location. This feels kinda like the new Yankees stadium. It looks pretty similar and it's really quite nice, but it lacks the history and authenticity. It needs to be worn in a bit.

While the food was delicious, the overall experience fell just slightly short of what I would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Service was the main area that didn't quite meet expectations. After being seated, we waited about 10 minutes before receiving menus and had to ask for them. Throughout the meal, interactions felt a bit rushed - several staff members who stopped by the table were somewhat brief, and on a few occasions, items like bread or water were dropped off while we tried to ask questions, but the busser had already walked away. That said, the restaurant was quite busy during lunch, so it's possible the pace and attentiveness were impacted by that. As for the food, we ordered the albacore tuna appetizer along with the strip loin, butcher's cut, and duck for our mains. Everything was well-prepared, though the duck portion was noticeably small. Desserts were a highlight - especially the pavlova with maracuya, which was excellent. Our server Laura was professional, though not very engaging until the very end of the meal when we were settling the bill. I would still return, as the food is strong, but I have to say that Bar George left a more lasting impression on us in terms of both food and service.

His recommendation of the Beef Wellington was spot on (it's already one of our favorite dishes), but this was hands down the best we've ever had. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was excellent with just the right amount of spice. My son had the 10 oz striploin steak with homemade fries (chips), and it was absolutely delicious. My mom is gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, 100% olive oil... lots of dietary restrictions, and Damas accommodated for her so kindly! The staff were super kind and welcoming. My mom had come here once before, and the waitress remembered her by name and was incredibly gracious and patient as my mom explained her diet. As for the food, just WOW. The pomegranate salad was incredible, and we got the lamb, chicken, mushrooms... everything was so beautifully plated with vibrant colors and burst of many flavors. Each perfectly cooked. It's amazing how they can turn something as "simple" as mushrooms and chicken to be so incredibly delicious. We celebrated my mom's birthday here, and the ambiance was perfect for it. 10/10 would recommend this place, especially for anyone with allergies.

Martin Picard, the chef of Au Pied de Cochon, is somewhat of a legend in this Canadian province. Intensely filling, fatty, meaty dishes unapologetically fill the menu of this otherwise laid back dinner establishment, while focusing on local ingredients and sourcing. For dining in North America, this restaurant has become a right of passage to visit. Chef Picard's most famous dish is the Duck in a Can. It's a pretty ridiculous concept to pull this off and it's basically as gruesomely appetizing for a carnivore as one would imagine: cooking organs and parts of the duck simmered slowly in a can, then dumping out the concoction into a fancy Bernardaud porcelain plate in a manner that will probably make most vegetarians cringe. It's not a presentation for the faint of heart, that's for sure. The quality of the meal here is truly world class. And yes, do get a side of Foie Gras poutine to make the fatty meal even fattier, might as well at this point. For those who did not yet interpret what this spot is about: it's the comfort food of comfort food, Quebec style.

The menu is limited, but I appreciate the focus. They know what they do well and aren't afraid of perfecting it. We ordered the fraisier cocktail (vodka with aperol and strawberry sorbet on top) and the Mexican mojito (got a kick in the bottom of your throat spicy). Both really good and didn't skimp on the alcohol. I was very giddy by the time they brought the foie gras nigiri. This is why I wanted to eat here and am so glad they keep it on the menu! One order comes with 4 spoon servings, by the way. Add the soy ginger sauce because it cuts the fattiness just right. Oh là là! Decadent, smooth and buttery. Why don't more places serve foie gras like this? Genius! We got the pork chop, paparadelle pork ragu and a side of the salt and maple sugar fries. All were good, but the foie gras still had them beat. The fries had nice flavor, but we were really disappointed that we got the tail end of the fry basket. The bottom and middle of our order was all the broken bits. I felt a bit deceived. We got the pudding chomeur that people said was a classic dessert with a scoop of ice cream. It honestly was too sickly sweet. It's basically cake doused in a pool of maple sugar. So, if you love sweet sweet desserts, then the pudding is for you. We really should have ordered another foie gras for dessert. Do it for me when you go. I would come back for the cocktails and foie gras.

We tried: - complimentary bread, butter, pickles, mustard. I loved this. Never saw another restaurant plop down mustard and pickles. The mustard was also possibly the most delicious mustard I've ever had. Very spicy and slightly salty - Duck confit on beans $37. Tasty, crispy, rich. - Grilled octopus on pepper sauce with potatos $24. Really tender and flavourful. The sauce was bright and acidic - Sorrel soup $13.75. First time having sorrel. It has a slightly sour taste. The soup was creamy and tangy. I'm glad we tried it - Quail with quail eggs on purple rice $37.50. Quail itself wasn't as flavourful but the sauce was amazing and soaked into the rice - Creme brulee $15. Flavour was impeccable. Had a slight grainy texture which was odd but this is just nit picking. Comes with a warm cookie Everything was good. I'm being more nitpicky here than usual, mostly to go back to these notes again in the future. I loved the meal and would definitely go back. Service is very friendly. Food came out super fast. The restaurant is bright and lively. Tables are quite cramped together but it makes sense as they quickly filled up for the evening. Thanks, we'll definitely be back!

I however, would highly recommend their duck entrée meat was so tender and flavorful, and it was perfectly crisp on the outside. Ultimately my best dining experience in Montreal!
