a giant is a giant. they keep it clean and the workers there have been helpful when i couldnt find random ingredients like mincemeat. occasionally they'll be sold out of stuff which is annoying (anything from chorizo to diet coke to pine nuts) but next time you come in it'll be stocked again. do not come between 5:30 - 7:00 pm or you will be in for a loooong wait for the register. any other time i havent had more than a 5-10 min wait (after i've figured out which cashiers to avoid...the girl with the short hair and tattoos is so freakin slow). free 2hr garage parking when you get your ticket stamped at the register. on your next trip to giant bring back all your plastic bags from your previous trip and stick them in the recycle bins by the grocery carts inside the entrance. there's also a redbox there which i love. woohoo for $1/night movies! you can even go online to the redbox website and reserve a movie so it's guaranteed to be at the grocery store when you go. read more

I find this Giant to be one of the worst Giant i have ever been to, customer service period is hoorible. The cashier aren't pleaseant so this is why i tend to do the self checkout, and lately the person that controls that is very nasty, even when you say hello and have a great day, nothing. it seems that your'e bothering them and this was just 8/31/16. You have a handful of people that are very pleasent but overall just terrible. read more

This is a review for the pharmacy only. Though I usually shop for groceries elsewhere and live near a CVS, I keep going to this pharmacy because they're the best. Everyone who works there is competent and kind, and the young man who works there is so incredibly knowledgeable. I love it! Try to find that at CVS - impossible! read more

The employees are the only prob. in this Giant. I live two blocks from this store and have only been there 3-4 times since they opened in 2004 or 05. Starting from the rude lady at the deli, then the guy who was MIA from sea food, then 2 guys in different isles on there cell phones talking crap, then the guy in the frozen food section with boxes all over that u could not walk by and yet looks at me LIKE I'M IN HIS WAY, then to top it all off . The lady at the self check out UGGGG!!!!! Nasty wiping her nose, coughing and sneezing and again talking trash with another employee OOOOOO and by the way she reminded me to take my cart to the front of the store cause that's not her job!!!!!!!!! I also feel it is the managers responsibility and obligation to teach customer service. As I know It is convenient for allot off us in the area, I rather get in my car and drive to S.S at the Giant on East West Hwy. Or better yet drive to Manhattan NY for groceries. read more

The store is ALWAYS busy, plan to spend 20-30 mins in line to pay. The workers though work at a slower pace, which possibly contributes to that. But not bad if you don't want to shop at Target across the street. read more

Really crowded around dinnertime. Not the aisle so much, but the check-out lines. Very slow! Prices are okay, certainly better than whole paycheck. Produce is pretty good. Shelves stay pretty full (not like the soviet safeway). And the store is a huge improvement over the old Giant on 14th street. Nice and modern. read more

Less than 30 hours ago (Thursday night),I decided to stop by this Giant Grocery store (near the Columbia Heights metro in Washington D.C.) on my way home to get some essentials and I admit some wants during my grocery shopping. I prefer to avoid listing everything that I got from this shopping trip but some of the things I feel fine with sharing that I received; 99 cent 4 roll toilet paper Guaranteed Value Brand, 2 packages of beef hot dogs Oscar Meyer Angus Bun Length Smoked Uncured Angus Beef Franks, a pack of 20 fajita flour tortillas Guerrero brand good until at least May 29 2016, Fat Free Honey Cinnamon Apple Sauce Musselman's brand, some bananas,and other items. I chose to utilize the self-checkout to purchase my items and I wanted to put back some items after realizing that I unintentionally thought they were a different price/sale price than what the register listed. Fortunately, the employee manning the cash register cheerfully and quickly took off the items for me even though I had to ask for their help twice during different time intervals of me scanning the items during the checkout (as well it being the time of multiple other customers utilizing the self-checkout lanes as well). read more

The best place in DC to buy beer/wine between 10-11 pm. Very useful. Otherwise, seems like a pretty standard grocery store.

This might be the worst Giant and possibly one of the worst grocery stores I have ever been to. It is consistently overpriced, under stocked (especially the produce which is awful), super grumpy staff, long lines, and has wild ass customers (I guess you can't hold that against Giant). Every time I go I wait in long lines and resent how much I am paying for sub par food. I only go when I can't find something specific else where or am in a pinch. Just go to Harris Teeter. Honestly the produce at Giant is never good (I find this city-wide, not just CoHi), and while they do have a butcher, I've not had good experience with their meat selection. I would've given them 1 star, but the deli counter isn't that bad. Overall, unless I'm really in a pinch, I don't go there. read more

This is terrible. Columbia heights deserves better as a community. Quality and selection is laughable. Target has better selection and better prices and it doesn't smell like a toilet or feel like a dingy cave. If they are going to remain a legitimate grocery store they should have to keep some sort of standard. How about keeping stock of potatoes and onions on a Sunday? Like not one Sunday every once in a while, all Sunday's. Pay higher salaries and/ or respect your employees because they are all miserable and obviously hate their jobs. I've been turned down three different times ten minutes before seafood or deli is technically closed. We should all be ashamed that we allow a giant corporate grocery steal from us and provide bad service. Let this location go out of business by abstaining from shopping and letting nature take its course. You can literally walk a block north to Panam groceries and find workers who are appreciated and an environment that doesn't feel like you're going to catch the next plague. Stand up Columbia heights. Destroy this store together. I hope you all visit the farmers market every weekend. read more

I was told by a cashier 2 weeks ago that business has really fallen off. She thought it was due to the new Walmart in DC. Maybe, but I tend to believe that it is also from the customers not wanting to deal with rude cashiers. Don't get me wrong, I have had many positive experiences with very friendly cashiers. But, I have had just as many negative experiences with moody unfriendly cashiers as well. No complaints about produce or other items. I can usually find what I need. read more

Only for the location does this Giant receive even two stars. The hurricane is always 20 minutes away. It is a crowded, angry mess.

I have lived in the DC area for 60 years. I remember when the giant was located on 14th Street between Newton and Otis Place, N.W., I love this Giant and have never had any problems shopping, the food, freshness of the food, and returning items. The customer service is great. I shop at this store at least 2-3 times a week. I am really glad that the store is there it is very close to my home. It is a great improvement from the old giant located on 14th Street. read more

it's my local grocery store that i come to for just about everything, plus who doesn't love shopping and getting a discount on gas. winning!! i always park on the top cause i don't have to deal with the tight spaces/area of the first level parking. the store stays pretty stocked. i wish the aisles were a little bigger, though i guess they're more indicative of the area; the aisles are reminiscent of going down a neighborhood street - stuff on the sides & when two are passing in opposite directions you go slow & hope you don't ding any of the stuff on the side. the staff is helpful and friendly. i don't think i've ever were able to walk right up to a self check out without there being a line, even with their new self checkouts w/ conveyor belts (now you too can pretend you're working in a grocery store... though you still have to wait until someone comes by to unlock the computer when something goes wrong). overall, i always come back even if there's a wait... plus it always allows me to catch up on the celeb world while waiting to be checked out. read more

When Giant opened its doors in June 2005 at its present site, it held such promise. The neighborhood desperately needed a modern, clean, efficient supermarket with a diversity of offerings to fulfill the needs of Columbia Heights increasingly demographic and economically diverse customers. Unfortunately, Giant has never fulfilled the promise. The quality, freshness, and availability of its produce varies widely each day -- fruits are often bruised, greens are dry and wilted, and its not uncommon to walk by a section that looks like a carpet bombing just took place. The fresh meat and seafood selection is extremely limited and the presentation is unattractive. The check out aisles are some of the longest in the city. About the only thing one can't complain much about are the dry good aisles, but then again, that's table stakes for a grocery store. All of this is solveable, but for whatever reason local Management seems content to let this Giant remain subpar, enjoying the benefit of being the only option in a high traffic area. It's perplexing why WholeFoods, Wegmans or Harris Teeter have chosen not to enter the Columbia Heights area yet. Hopefully it won't be too long before this deserving area is offered something better.. read more
