Geta used to be a little hidden gem of a sushi joint in Oakland for good and affordable sushi. Prices have def increased to even higher than most sushi restaurants. They have a regular menu and a lot of "specials" on their walls that was painted with characters and cartoons. Food is still good. They have cali roll and real crab cali roll which was interesting. We got the rainbow, gyoza, spicy hamachi. The spicy hamachi (instead of hamachi version of a chopped spicy tuna), just had spicy sauce on the top. We were also given complimentary samples of their new tempura fish cake which was a really nice gesture of the owner! Everything else was pretty normal as expected. +1 for hospitality! read more

One of my all time favorites, simply because of their spicy crispy chicken don. Maybe 5-6 years ago, I could get a massive box of the chicken and rice for $10-11, but now it's more like $16. This place is solid! I don't know about the complaints about it being worse. It is the same as it ever was--splendid--and definitely worth the wait. We like to get there early to beat the rush, like when they open at 5 p.m. They currently have a free appetizer special (agedashi tofu or fried fish cakes) if you get there between 5 and 6. There are maybe 4 tables and a bar, so it really is a hole in the wall. The best thing about this place is that they offer many different fish or parts of fish you can't usually get at other sushi restaurants. (You can get it elsewhere, but for a lot more money, and usually you have to drive farther out for it.) I appreciate that variety and value. Most of the unique items are drawn on cute little signs. The menu they give you has more of the typical fare from Japanese restaurants in the U.S. My favorite is the amaebi because they fry the shrimp heads for you! One order comes with two shrimp nigiri and two shrimp heads. Between the slippery raw shrimp and the crispy heads, it's a textural contrast and absolute delight. I kind of like that the heads are pokey and pointy and a little dangerous; they taste so good and full of umami. After eating these, I start to feel full and realize I've ordered too much but forge ahead anyway. The cuts for the nigiri are super generous so you get a lot of bang for your buck. Lots of real estate to chew and ponder. I like to leave the soy sauce off the first bite, and then decide if I need it in the second bite. The staff is super nice and attentive, but not overly so. This place used to be my Go-To spot for lunch when working on Piedmont Avenue because of the affordable prices. I've since moved and changed jobs, but always tried to visit when I was in the area and craving sushi. The prices increased significantly and the owners seemed to have changed too? I wasn't used to seeing the higher prices for sushi and it was way overpriced in my opinion for the ambiance/style of Geta, so I ended up ordering the Karaage Don... and IT. WAS. DELICIOUS! Geta is good. Small restaurant with lovely decorations from Miyazaki movies such as soot balls from Spirited Away, doll figures from Princess Mononoke, figures from Totoro. The wait is always kind of long. It took my party about 30 minutes to be seated and there is no Yelp Waitlist. There is good and attentive service. We ordered Salmon Belly, the famed Lion King roll, Miso Soup, and Chicken Karage. Salmon belly came with 2 pieces and was good. Lion King Roll came out to be kind of spicy sauce (sort of tastes like Safeway Lion King if you'd have that, but better). Miso Soup was very delicious and Chicken Karage was decent. Geta is my go-to place whenever I need to satisfy my sushi craving. It's a tiny establishment so I'd recommend coming before the lunch/dinner rush or just place an order to go. Either way, I can always count on Geta to serve some of the freshest fish in town. Items I keep reordering because I can't get enough of it: sashimi combo, any of the nigiri options(especially the toro), lobster salad roll, dragon roll, 49ers roll, salmon kama (it's made upon ordering so it usually takes ~20-30 min). I've probably tried everything on the menu and there's literally not one thing I didn't like. In addition to their melt-in-your-mouth-sashimi and other fresh ingredients, the prices are more affordable than other sushi places in the area. I'd call this a win-win situation! read more

I ordered the 49er roll and it was just disgusting to say the least. The salmon were random cuts of fish that tasted very chewy - some pieces were thin and some thick. Totally understand that they can get away with this because I ordered delivery, but still. I ended up throwing most of the roll away and vowed to never go back to Geta even if they were giving out free food. Oh and the real crab was mixed in mayo and dried..I can't even explain the taste, but definitely not REAL crab. Maybe they can relabel it as pseudo real crab. Or imitation real crab. Heck, imitation crab might have tasted better. I honestly gave Geta so many chances to redeem themselves, but they have fallen short too many times. This is one of our go-to spots for takeout. The restaurant is way too small for the kind of crowds they get so takeout is definitely the way to go. I like to live on the wild side and usually call in during the last 15 minutes they're open. (They close early, at 8:30PM.) We can get there in less than 10 minutes and our order is usually already waiting. There is always, always a line and with the prices and quality, I'm not surprised. I've even tried the same sushi roll (the 49'er - salmon and lemon on top of a fresh crab CA roll) at other places and they just don't even come close. Their curry and katsu is another winner. And I like to get their veggie roll or umeshiso to round out. Yum. Be nice and they might even throw in a free Pocky for dessert. ;) read more

Came here for an early dinner on new year's eve. It was packed! We walked in at 5:10ish (they open at 5pm) and all the tables were close to full. Luckily they had one table left for 2 ppl so we were seated right away. They have really fast, friendly, and attentive service for a small restaurant churning out a ton of to-go orders. I was pleasantly surprised that they kept refilling our tea and checking on our table. We ordered the hamachi avocado roll, seaweed salad, tonkatsu entree (comes with miso soup) and amberjack nigiri. I was hesitant to order the nigiri because it was a little pricey ($7.50 for 2 pieces) but I didn't regret it. They put a thick piece of fish that wraps around the rice on the nigiri so it's actually very worth the price. Their real california rolls are $4.95 and their regular are $3.95. Bento box combos are $10.50. Highly recommend getting their teriyaki chicken over the beef. The portion of beef was literally 5 thin slivers--totally not worth it. Their tempura is ok, but there are a ton of fillers like a quarter of an onion. Their lion king roll is also a hit or miss--sometimes it's delicious and other times it's way too saucey and the bottom half is cold (like they used a premade sushi roll). They also gave some We ordered a bunch of sushi, and the grilled kama. The kama was super tasty, perfectly salty and super moist on the inside, just how I like salmon. For sushi, we ordered the salmon avocado roll, rainbow roll, rock n roll, the 49er, and the baked scallop. It was all so good, but my favorites were the salmon avocado and the 49er. The rice was cooked well, and the ratio of rice to fish was perfect. A lot of places put too much rice, but I really liked the fact that they didn't put too much. Today I ordered the sashimi combo and the fish was not only poorly prepared but it was still frozen! Here is a picture of one of the pieces that was completely inedible. You have to wait outside the door, please don't leave and come back after you name is called. Other people are also waiting. One couple was waiting too far away from the door and didn't hear their name called(we heard), then proceeded to get mad at the restaurant for 'skipping them'. It's pretty good, but I don't normally go for bento or rolls unless with my kid nephews. I also had their sashimi, amaebi and uni sushi. They're good quality. Despite the crowdedness, tiny space, and obsolete decor, which normally would compromise the quality, I have not gotten sick from eating here. They apparently have stocks at Berkeley Bowl :-) I tried the sushi burrito. I highly recommend it for budget sushi burrito for an afternoon snack, or a hungry-and-broke meal. I think it has enough nutrients you'd get in a meal. It's so dense! The place is small, and parking is limited. Many people come for take-outs. My friend and I shared the sashimi combo which has a good variety of sashimi including salmon belly, lobster with uni, hamachi, tuna, conch, etc. The sashimi was very fresh and melted in my mouth! Was gonna try out a conveyor belt sushi place in SF, but I got lazy to drive far so I ended up at Geta today, but then it was some what hard to find parking around Geta, and the experience wasn't very good so I guess I should of work a bit harder for a possible better dinning. I ordered my food at Geta over the phone, got there like 16 min then I have to spent like 10 minutes looking for a parking because this area is always busy both day and night. I had a teka, hamachi (I ask for no avocado, I don't know why they don't have it with green onion, the way I like, like the other places), burdock root rolls, an avocado roll, and a miso soup. Both teka and hamachi tasted alright, not sure if it was the heat outside that made me lost my appetite or if it because the fish wasn't very fresh this time. The burdock root came looking like some carrots roll with some cucumber, I thought they have serve a carrot roll but when I Google it up, I think they probably pickled the burdock in a tumeric salt brine which gave the orange ish color, the burdock roll got a nice crunch, and the burdock itself have a little salty flavor, it was okay, so was the avocado roll. The Miso was nice and salty, paired well with the plain avocado roll. So for 1 geta, 1 hamachi, 1 burdock roll, 1 avocado roll and a miso my bill came at 24 something with gratitude it was 26 something, don't even know why I left tip for a togo, I probably should stop doing that, and they could of give me a better togo bag instead of some clear plastic bag that turn me off right away. read more

When you're craving that sushi/sashimi fix you better come to Geta. While the wait to get inside isn't always the quickest thing, the service once you get seated is. Luckily it only took us about 30 minutes to get seated. It's located near Piedmont so there are tons of shops/places in walking distance to check out while you wait. Geta is a small location with only a few bar seats/tables inside - very similar to sushi places you'd find in Japan. At first you would think that it would be cramped, but they do very well making it space efficient without feeling crowded. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW QUICK THE SERVICE HERE IS. HOLY MOLY. From the moment we walked in we were asked what we'd like to drink and within another minute asked what we wanted to order. We ended up getting: - Spicy Hamachi Roll ($7) - Huge fan of Yellowtail so this was a win in my book. The sauce they put over it is just the right amount of spiciness that doesn't overpower the rest of the roll. - Side of Teriyaki Chicken ($6) - Perfectly crispy, coated, and portioned. - Chef's Special Sashimi ($16 - comes w/miso soup & rice) - Not the best sashimi i've had but the fish tasted super fresh. To get my order within 5 minutes is nothing I can really complain about either. I would definitely come back to order all of the 3 dishes above. For the quick service, affordable prices, and fresh fish, this place can't be beat. They do a lot with the space they have so come check it out! This is probably one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the Bay Area. Parking- There is a quite large parking lot but it seems to be always full. Size of the restaurant- It's really small so you need to be ready to stand in line for a while (but the wait is so worth it). I seem to always sit at the sushi bar. Geta has been on my list for a long time. This small space comes with a wait time, but we were lucky enough to only wait a few minutes around 12:30 on a Friday. We had to try a little bit of everything. The tea and miso were quality so we knew the sushi would be delicious. The nigiri and rolls were GREAT. So fresh. My better half said "stupid fresh." We had to wait a little while for rolls, but the server was quick with our miso and nigiri. He was very attentive, poured tea and removed plates quickly. This little restaurant has that well-loved, hole in the wall feel. Another great date spot. No TVs. Bathrooms tucked around the corner. I would not recommend for groups larger than four. A number of solo eaters seated quickly. Decidedly the best north Oakland sushi spot. Hands down. The pocky with the check sealed the deal. A must that's on par with SF. Win for Oakland. read more

*update I gotta dock stars because they're no longer a bargain. All their prices went up drastically since I started going. IE. a Philadelphia Roll went from 4.75 to 6.95. That's the case with most of their sushi now :( they have all these great 5 star reviews based on their old prices. Hmmmmmm..........????? So is it really worth it now for the super long wait to sit down and be crowded by all the employees walking around or eating right next to strangers or even worse right next to the bathroom?? We loved Geta because of their authenticity of Sushi, their nigiri was very nicely made and well balanced with sashimi part. However, today's sushi was awful. Syari ( rice part) was like a bomb, too big and not professionally made and Neta "sashimi part" was too thick and too much decorations on it.
