I asked them to package the salad separately and they accommodated and also placed the hot food in a separate bag from the sushi and raw food. I was craving a hearty meal after a long week and decided to order delivery from Coach Sushi. I can't speak for the ambiance if dining in, but the food took roughly 15 minutes to prepare for delivery. I decided to order the dinner bento box with the spicy tuna roll and chicken katsu. The bento comes with a side of miso soup as well. Starting with the bento, the chicken katsu had a golden brown exterior and was crunchy, but the breading did fall off and the chicken was just a tad dry. It was still enjoyable and great with the katsu sauce, although I do wish they provided more sauce. The spicy tuna roll is not too spicy and just the right level of heat. This was my favorite part of the bento because of how fresh the tuna was and the rice was also fresh and not stale or dried out. The side salad consists of spring greens drizzled with a sweet sauce. This also tasted fresh and was a good balance with the heaviness of the meal. Moving on to the lion king roll, the salmon was very tender and fresh. I appreciate how stuffed it was with the crab meat. The avocado and green onion added this brightness that cuts through the richness of the eel sauce. The only callout I have similar to the katsu is that the roll does fall apart but I didn't mind it too much because of how I can tell the roll was made with fresh ingredients. The decor here is nice - it's welcoming and there are a lot of Japanese reproductions that were thoughtfully chosen by someone acquainted with the culture. Of course, the view out to Lake Merritt is fabulous. Service was slow for lunch because there's only one overworked wait person, and only one chef. Sadly, the food was not good - meh at best. The sushi weren't pressed tightly & easily fell apart, plus the salmon inside was more like a salmon shmear, just a dab. The tempura was odd - the outside coating unidentifiable, thin & not properly crispy. Green salad - below average, pre-dressed with bottled dressing (apparently). Recent reviews don't do this place justice. We came on a random Tuesday night 8pm and the place was empty, but literally not for long. Within ten minutes the place was buzzing with patrons so we were intrigued. A local 3.7 star (at the time) sushi restaurant we were willing to take a chance on and we were so glad we did. This is one of the best sushi experiences we have had in Oakland. Service was great, super attentive host and the food preparation was timely with eye widening rolls that are very delicious. We ordered a nice spread from appetizers to dessert and I highly recommend staying all the way through this course. More on that later.... For apps we tried the spicy garlic edamame (must try!), cucumber sesame salad (very tasty), and miso soup. For the rolls, skip the basic common ones and skip to the speciality page because it is worth it. We had the Titanic roll (5 ), the Bluefin Truffle, and the Spider Mania (5 ) rolls. All very fresh, tasty, textured, yum. For dessert, THIS PLACES MAKES THEIR OWN ICE CREAM! MULTIPLE FLAVORS! All natural made from simple ingredients and fruits without additives. My favorite casual sushi restaurant in Oakland. I have probably been here more often than any other sushi spot in the bay. Amazing service, great rolls, and they have sake from a masu cup. What more could you ask for? The servers name is fittingly Happy because that's what she is on any given day. The other servers are great too, don't get me wrong, but she has such great energy. Coach sushi is a classic sushi spot that I used to go to way back like 15 years ago. They were known for the "coach" who comes around to refill your sake. Let me say, a few things have changed since then and a few things have not! The refill on the bottomless sake for a reasonable price is still there. The sake is $10 per order and as long as you spend $25 on food, you can get unlimited refills within a 2 hour limit! What's changed is that their sake is of good quality. It's a beautiful bottle that tastes good and they still pour it in the little box. Now let me get to the food, the food has really stepped up since they changed owners last year and got a new sushi chef. They import fresh ingredients overnight from Japan. I had so many favorites that I tried! Their Bluefin truffle roll omg. If you like fatty tuna and truffle, get ready for a foodgasm! Their titanic roll was massive, such a great value and exploding with flavors. I think it can feed like 2 people! The sashimi platter was my highlight. I've been to dozens of omakases in the city, but this is probably one of the freshest and best fish in Oakland. So perfectly sliced, and they also have seated wagyu! As for their other dishes, karage is so fresh and crispy, the seasoning isn't like most restaurants. It has fresh slices of garlic. EBI shrimp with egg was so sweet. And their tempura wasn't overly battered! Lastly end with homemade icecream of all unique flavors including my favorite black sesame. I have to say the quality of their sushi from when I remembered it 15 years ago truly surpassed my expectations. They have a lot of vegan options, a plus for me, but even my omnivore friends love their wide selection and creative combinations for the rolls. The tentacles were crunchy, but the middle was soggy. The Lion King Roll was basic and small, especially for the price. The ginger tasted old and lacked the fresh, pickled zing you'd expect. Ambiance & Service: Coach Sushi has a typical small sushi spot ambiance. The place was clean, but it didn't stand out. Service was okay, but not enough to make up for the food. Overall Experience: If you're looking for a quick sushi fix, Coach Sushi might do the job, but it's far from impressive. The rolls were small and lacked flavor, and the ginger was disappointing. Cute spot but the sushi is subpar when compared to other sushi spots in the area. This is a really popular spot located walking distance from the Lake off of Grand. Walking in, you'll get this really homey feel. It's small but lively and the environment seems to be very relaxed. Service was actually great and the sushi bar is an excellent alternative if you don't want to wait for a table (the inside is currently closed due to COVID-19). This place is also known for its' bottomless sake which is one of the main reasons for its' popularity. I've never really been that crazy about sake, so I didn't take advantage. I stopped by for dinner one evening and was underwhelmed by the sushi. They provide a nice complimentary appetizer before your meal. Their sushi menu is pretty extensive and offers a nice variety of rolls. They are a bit on the spendy side but pretty much on par with the other sushi places nearby. The difference is that the quality isn't as good here. I ordered a New York Roll and a Lion King Roll. Usually when I order more then one roll, I'm never able to finish them both. Welp, I finished both of them here. Yep. Their rolls are small and not really filling. I was shocked. Probably could have eaten one more roll, but who wants to spend $40 for 3 small rolls?! The quality is questionable too. They didn't taste fresh. Seemed like the ingredients were a few days old at least. Both rolls tasted average, but the New York Roll tasted the best out of the two. The sauce on the Lion King Roll had a weird aftertaste. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I've never experienced that sort of flavor on a Lion King Roll and I order this all the time at sushi restaurants. Presentation-wise, everything looked beautiful. It just sucks that the quality didn't match. I really enjoyed the service and the atmosphere here though. I've lived in this Grand Lake neighborhood since 1997 and our family has always gone to Mijori for sushi and I still feel very loyal to them for their very good food and friendship. However, during COVID and forward, they no longer do lunch there. So, my daughter and I ended up at Coach Sushi for lunch in December of 2023 and after tasting some of their nigiri, we just looked at each other and went 'wow, this place has gotten way better". We had been there like 20 years ago at that point. Anyway, I think the new owners have been there for about a year and a half, and they are very committed to excellent fish. Great rolls, great nigiri and maka. Also do grilled food like lamb chops and their hamachi carpaccio is wonderful. They're also very nice people. More than just a great neighborhood spot. read more
