First timer here and I had such a great experience at this sushi restaurant! The modern aesthetic made the whole place feel fresh and inviting, and the staff were incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. They made us feel taken care of from the minute we walked in. Started with gyoza, brussel sprouts, miso dashi fries, grilled shishito peppers, and chicken karaage, and every dish came out flavorful and so well-prepared. I also ordered the omakase special, which was the highlight of my meal. Each piece was beautifully crafted and tasted great, truly a chef's showcase. Overall, everything tasted great and the entire dining experience was wonderful. Highly recommend!

    Warrior's roll

Came here recently and was honestly really impressed. The sushi was fresh, flavorful, and nicely presented. Especially the Warriors roll, which was super refreshing with the fresh salmon and citrus on top. You can tell they pay attention to quality and detail. The service was friendly and the vibe and music was chill, making it a good spot whether you're going out with friends or just wanting to grabbing a casual meal. Definitely a solid sushi spot in Oakland! I'd come back!

Chicken katsu lunch was very good, and the Alicia roll was service 10/10, nice spot to visit and in a cool location

    Veggiepillar and vegetable tempura roll

This review is super overdue, so my apologies to the restaurant in case they have changed the recipes or offerings since. I tried the vegetable tempura roll and veggiepillar as takeout. I'm not a fan of avocado and there's a lot of it on the veggiepillar, so if you like avocado, you might find this to be a plus. However, I did like the veggie tempura roll since it is crispy and savory; I tend to like crunchiness or at least a variety of textures on my sushi and not just squishy or slippery textures, which can sometimes happen based on the ingredients used for vegetarian sushi. I would still recommend going for a place that specializes in vegetarian sushi if you're a vegetarian or vegan, such as Tane Vegan or Shizen, but this was still decent.

The service was great, our waitress was really friendly & attentive. The food was just okay, I got the seaweed salad & a tempura roll, which was $14. To me that's pricey for what I consider a simple roll.

Of all the nearby sushi restaurants, Kakui is the best one for a fancier meal or date night. It's clean, intimate, and modern (the warm lighting looked great on us, but my food photos do look a bit filtered!). While their menu is light on the nigiri and rolls, they make up for it with creative small plates and appetizers. Our waiter, Kenny, was prompt, friendly, and gave us great recommendations for sake and food. When there was a problem customer stirring things up at the counter (!!!!), he de-escalated masterfully and went back to being an absolute professional. All of the food was spectacular, the sake was smooth and balanced, and the standout appetizer for me was the Brussels sprouts with karashi vinaigrette. I look forward to coming here often to try more interesting rolls, typical nigiri, and seasonal small plates.

Stopped in for lunch at noon on a Tuesday. I was surprised I was the only one in the restaurant. I sat at the sushi bar. Kenny my waiter was very friendly. He brought the menus and a large bottle of iced water. He told me to take my time and let him know when I was ready to order. They had both their regular menu and a lunch special menu. I chose the Warrior Roll which Kenny stated that was his favorite. I watched the Chef carefully make my roll and torch the Salmon. The roll was large and very tasty. I would recommend this roll. Menu pricing was a little high on the entrees and bento boxes compared to other high quality sushi establishments. Pricing on the rolls were comparable to other establishments..

Wow what a gem in Montclair! A lovely ambiance if you choose inside or outdoors. Setting is very nice and modern as well as welcoming. Server was also super sweet and helpful! The server basically suggested everything for us and they were all amazing. My favorite was the gindara black cod -- so light but flavorful! And the wild mushrooms everywhere was delicious. We came on a Saturday at early lunch time and there weren't many people, so that was also very nice. But I imagine it will pack up in the evenings. Parking is tricky around here but doable. I'd love to come back again.

this place is good, the rolls are good and the service is good. the price is a bit expensive compared to places around it but good for a nicer dinner out.

Pics on yelp were quite deceiving. - Crunchy Toro was probably the best out of all items that I ordered. Though $35 for 2 of these hand sized crunchy toros is still overpriced - Lion King wasn't fully baked like other Sushi places, which made this taste like another regular roll. - California roll was for my daughter, it was fluffy and decent. - Pan fried udon was a disappointment. It was overly sweet and the fish pieces were very dry. - Rack of Lamb was medium rare, no flavor, garnished with salads and potatoes. Unfortunately, will not return...

First time dining at Kakui and it did not disappoint! I made a same day Friday night reservation by calling when they opened earlier in the day. We arrived a little early but were seated right away. The restaurant is small but intimate and modern. We took some time with the menu and ordered some sake, a miso soup and shishitos to start. Kakui runs on a nimble staff. I think there were only 2 servers but given the small number of tables and a sushi bar we felt well attended to service wise. We ordered sushi next which arrived quickly. I have eaten a lot of sushi in my life and I was really impressed with the quality of the fish. The toro ngiri, salmon and hamachi sashimi really stood out. We will definitely be back!

The restaurant was packed and seating is pretty limited, so I'd highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The atmosphere is lively and energetic with casual Japanese eatery vibes, and service was friendly throughout the meal. Everything felt creative, rich in flavor, and very texture-focused. Here are the highlights: * Ankimo Mousse (monkfish liver) with sweet potato chips - Made with truffle paste, capers, and chives. Absolutely delicious. The mousse was rich and savory but surprisingly fluffy in texture -- honestly a savory girl's dream. The sweet potato chips added just enough sweetness and a snap to balance the richness of the liver. 9/10 * Bluefin Tuna & Tsubugai Sashimi Nuta - Bluefin tuna, sea snail, broccolini, and fresh wakame tossed in a sweet Kyoto yuzu miso vinaigrette. Kind of like a sashimi-seaweed salad. I really liked the vinaigrette and especially the texture of the sea snail. I'm not sure all the ingredients fully came together cohesively, but it was still enjoyable overall. 7.5/10 * Yuba (house-made tofu skin with ikura and uni) - Served as single bites on spoons. SO good. You can really taste the difference between house-made tofu skin and store-bought. It's much more delicate, creamy, and tender, with a mild soybean flavor that balanced the richness of the uni and salmon roe beautifully. The textures in this bite were incredible. 9.5/10 * Iberico Pork Jowl Skewer with miso marinade - I honestly prefer pork jowl over pork belly. The fat and meat are more integrated instead of layered, so every bite is tender, juicy, and flavorful with just the right amount of chew. So good. 9/10 * Clam & Cilantro Ramen - I've never had a ramen broth quite like this. It was slightly creamy and deeply flavored from the clams, and the cilantro added a lot of depth and freshness. The noodles had a great texture too -- chewy and bouncy. Everything worked together perfectly. 9/10 * Uni Carbonara Pasta - Pasta with parmesan, uni, and ikura. They do not skimp on the uni or roe here. Super creamy and rich with bursts of saltiness from the ikura. The texture was great, but I honestly wished it had just a tiny bit more salt to really make all the flavors pop. It was almost there for me. 7.5/10 * Desserts - We tried two desserts, including the sweet potato brûlée. Both were delicious. One had a silky panna cotta-like texture, while the sweet potato brûlée was creamy, lightly sweet, and had the perfect crackly sugar top. 9/10 Overall, such a fun meal with a lot of unique dishes and flavor combinations. There are still so many things on the menu I want to try next time. I'll definitely be back.

The standouts were the corn tempura, the sushi and the beef okonomiyaki. The skewers were good but not great; I felt the pork belly was a tad salty, and some of the pieces of the beef were slightly overcooked + chewy. The black cod was flaky but I wish it was marinated a bit more with the miso for stronger flavor. I wish I did not order the spring roll or the foil wrapped salmon. The spring roll was soggy bc the filling inside was so damp and lacked seasoning & flavor. The salmon was very dry, but the mushrooms were flavorful and juicy. Definitely recommend reservations or be ready to wait at least 45 minutes. The inside is quite small, tables as well, so be ready to sit pretty close to your neighboring patrons. Very lively atmosphere that can get loud, but could also be fun!

Rich, deeply garlicky broth that was bold and delicious. * Signature smoked toripaitan ramen - flavorful without being overly heavy (which I prefer). If you come around 8pm, you likely won't have to wait long since the dinner rush tends to slow down by then. When we arrived, the staff brought complimentary edamame for the table while we looked over the menu. I appreciate when edamame isn't overloaded with salt, and they did a great job keeping it simple and flavorful. I love spicy food, so my friend and I split the spicy tuna roll, the hot girl roll, and the baked scallop roll. Each one was delicious, but the hot girl roll was my favorite. It's topped with spicy tuna and jalapeños and had the perfect kick. The baked scallop roll came out hot and gooey, covered in a sweet garlic sauce that paired really well with the scallops. The restaurant is also vegetarian-friendly, which is one of the reasons we chose it. My partner ordered the avocado maki, veggie dragon roll, and the futo maki. His favorite was the veggie dragon roll, which includes avocado and eggplant. The futo maki wasn't as much of a hit for him, but that may just be because he's not a big fan of radish. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this place for the quality of the food and the welcoming service. The service and food quality was consistently good with attentive friendly prompt service both times. Busy sushi counter with three sushi chefs slicing and dicing away! Highlights here for me were the big thick super fresh pieces of sushi (Toro, Salmon and Albacore), and the Tonkatsu Pork Curry Rice. Though the menu seems vast, I didn't really encounter anything that I didn't enjoy. The Dragon and "Heart Attack" rolls were perfect. Everything was just on point or better. Well... wait.. I didn't think the Sushi Tacos were that great, as they were unexpectedly spicy and fall apart rather easily. Eh.. I'll master that maybe next time. Lots of angled parking out in front. I wouldn't mind coming back here anytime. It's a bustling busy place in otherwise sleepy Brisbane!

Arrived on time for my 8:30am reservation and of course had to sit at the welcoming bar. Thank goodness I made a reservation because there were walk ups that were waiting outside for a seat. Started off strong eith a good ole bottle of Sake and its rare i find a place that carries one of my favorites (Kurosawa) so i was a hapy camper there. I had the sashimi combo and the Nigiri combo. Both were great and lovingly made by the pros at the bar. It was great seeing them take great care with the fish and forming the nigiri. Everything was so so so good! I totally understand the hype of this spot and I know ill be back again very soon.

I ordered the chef's special nigiri and every piece was delicious. Super fresh, great flavor, and really well put together. The chefs were very attentive and made the experience even better. My buddy asked the chef on what his favorite fish to eat was and while they didn't currently have it in the menu . The manager who was right next to him said they if we called in advance they would source it and be able to prepare it for us if we liked .Definitely a spot I'd come back to if you're into good sushi.

Such a great breakfast spot! We were seated right away and the food was very unique and tasty…read more Would definitely come back for the chicken and croffles!!! The perfect mix of savory and sweet. Not to mention the waffle definitely does have a croissant like texture. 10/10!!!! The tomyum scramble was delicious and the ube pancakes have a mochi like texture similar to the Trader Joe's Ube mix I would def go back to try other dishes on the menu and eat that yummy chx croffle again. It is street parking only but easy to find. The restaurant is cute inside with hanging wooden lanterns and a open concept. Go go go!

Finally checked this place off my brunch bookmark list after wanting to try it for quite some time…read more We came around noon on a Saturday and only had a short wait outside, though the line situation felt pretty chaotic with multiple customers walking straight into the restaurant and skipping ahead. Thankfully, we were still seated within about 15 minutes. I really enjoyed the Tom Yum Scramble served inside a croissant. The croissant itself was a bit disappointing, slightly stale and reminiscent of a Costco croissant but the tom yum scramble was absolutely delicious and flavorful enough to make up for it. The Thai Tea French Toast was nicely balanced and not overly sweet, though I would've liked a bit more texture and crunch. As for the drinks, I'd probably skip them next time. Both the ube latte and matcha latte tasted a little artificial, and I've definitely had better versions at other brunch spots. Overall, I enjoyed the food and appreciated how attentive the service was.
