Delicious! Truly excellent!!! I need to go back here immediately bc everything was so good! Hidden spot for sure

    Tuna Tataki

Visiting town for work and was craving sushi. This place was not too far from my hotel. I decided to give it a try and really enjoyed it. My favorite was the Tuna Tataki and the rainbow roll, which was real crab and avocado topped with salmon, maguro and Hamachi. I made a reservation and was able to sit pretty quickly. It's not a big restaurant so a reservation is definitely recommended. They do have four seats at the sushi bar but mostly dining room seating. I plan to come back !

I really wanted to like this place but it just wasn't my favorite. Seating is comfortable but maybe cause it was hot outside, we had to keep swatting small flies away while we were eating. Other than that, it's solid if you want to crave your sushi craving but may not be the most prime sushi you've had. They do give you a good portion for the tempera. The sauce is good but also the fry was not my favorite either.

This place is so cute!! I loved everything I ordered and the staff was super attentive. Will def come again(: Lychee lemonade - 10/10 i added iced tea to it also it's more on the tart side Mongolian dumpling - 10/10 it's almost like a big soup dumpling - chewier with more meat Chirashi bowl - 8/10 everything went well together and tasted fresh, three varieties of fish, rice was really good with a sauce Cherry blossom roll - 8/10 not your typical cherry blossom it had fried shallots and a sauce Spicy miso cucumber - 10/10 sauce was really tasty Brussels sprouts and karage - 9/10 it's a gigantic serving lol the chicken was super crispy

Friendly service and cute decor! Yakitori- I really liked the sauce! Chicken wasn't overcooked and the veggies were lovely. Partner had the chirashi - he liked it~ Omakase had some fun pieces like the salmon marinated in beet juice! Quality was decent and cute serving spoons for the sashimi Matcha tres leche - not too sweet :) fun take on it but wasn't my thing but my partner really liked it. Bathrooms in the back to the left. Street parking in downtown, can be easy or hard depending on when you go. Reservations are welcome online~

They have good night sushi. The rolls are Small and too saucy. The sirashi bowl is my favorite.

Stahhhhp...omakase for under $50 and delectable rolls with fresh sushi atop rolls in bite sized perfection. Loved everything from the time we parked our car -- plenty of parking in the neighborhood, and we walked over and entered and the sweet melody of Jhene Aiko was coming through the speakers. I knew it was going to be a good night. The server did a great job of letting us know of tonight's specials. We opted for the omakase, rainbow roll, and Godzilla roll. I loved each morsel and was only disappointed in myself for not being able to fit anymore food in my stomach after a starter of sunomono salad and yakitori and the two rolls. My husband enjoyed the diversity of flavors. Arigato gozaimasu to the chef -- will tell our friends and family to come check yall out for sure!

Who boils cherry tomatoes? I bit into it expecting a refreshing touch to an otherwise hot dish. Instead, boiling hot tomato seeds and innards burnt my tongue. 0/10 would not come again. Also, the table was rocking. They attempted to fix it using shims. If they are willing to take shortcuts on customer experience, I'd hate to see how they conduct themselves with food handling. Furthermore, what was teriyaki sauce must have been the cheapest, most 2-dimensional sauce they could get their hands on. It overpowered everything texturally and flavorily with what could only be corn syrup and sugar. The broccoli was steamed within an inch of its life and lacked any flavor. It's a good restaurant for those who have never had sushi or Japanese food of any sort. If you fit the bill, enjoy your visit.

The place is super cute, ambiance was great, and the lady that helped us was really nice and very attentive. The food tho was a bit disappointing. We got the agedashi tofu was hard and not soft. Next we got the grilled mackerel and that was ok I just wished they didn't mix balsamic vinegar and fish. It didn't mix very well. The omakase set was a very good price, but the only one that tasted good was the tuna and the sake salmon. Everything else was interesting. The mackerel nigiri was the worst. I wasn't sure what was going on and the fish didn't seem ok. As it just mushed in my mouth. My partner and I love omakases so we were a bit disappointing. I would say if you're there for like an American style sushi I think you might enjoy it more, but as we are more into the omakase style it didn't suit our taste. We don't see ourselves coming back unfortunately.

Happy that there's a sushi restaurant that serves affordable omakase walking distance from me in downtown Oakland. I ordered the 10pc omakase which was only $49, and came with some premium bites like hotate scallop and toro. The most unique bite for me was the beet cured salmon, vibrant color but you can actually taste the beet flavor as well. Highly recommend if you want to scratch that itch for some premium sushi on this side of the bay.

Khatan Sushi recently opened so we came to check it out on a Friday evening. There was no one else eating in, so the servers were very attentive. As for the food, I enjoyed their nigiris the most, they were very fresh. I wish we would have tried the omakase set. We ordered the Lake Merritt roll which was solid but not outstanding and then asked for a tuna maki which ended up being a regular roll. The Mongolian dumplings were not the most flavorful and a bit of an odd addition to the mostly Japanese menu. Lastly, they had decent sake offerings which were a good pairing to our meal.

New sushi spot that replaced Elephant Sushi on the corner of 14th and Webster! I came in with my partner on a Monday night and was immediately sat. The interior was dimly lit and pretty intimate which made it an ideal weekday date night spot. Service was okay - had to ask for our waters to be refilled despite being the only ones dining later in the evening. We ordered the Khatan Roll, Lake Merritt Roll, and Omakase to share. I preferred the Khatan roll over the Lake Merritt roll - it was a light balance of sweet and umami with the mango and unagi sauce. The Lake Merritt roll was just a bit too sour for me. Omakase was a decent size with 10 pieces. Nothing stand out, but sushi was fresh. Heads up - they do charge a ~5% "convenience fee" applied to the subtotal before tax is applied.

    Andrea B.

Lovely staff. House sake was right in the middle of dry and sweet. Hard to mess up miso soup and this hit the spot. Got the California roll and the Sake Maki roll. Both hit the spot. GF soy sauce.

Omakase with added toro. Every bit as delicious as it looks.

We were seated about an hour later, but once we got in, the service was quick and efficient. We ordered a mix of items to share: * Enoki chips - absolutely addicting. Perfectly crispy with a great crunch, and the umami spice on the side took them to another level. * Chicken karaage - tasty overall, but the glaze was poured over everything. I would've preferred it on the side to keep the texture crisp. * Kani hand roll - super fresh and flavorful; didn't even need soy sauce. * Ikura & hotate hand roll - generous portion and very fresh, again no soy needed. * Garlic Knockout ramen - lives up to the name. Rich, deeply garlicky broth that was bold and delicious. * Signature smoked toripaitan ramen - flavorful without being overly heavy (which I prefer). The chashu was tender and the noodles tasted fresh. I was blown away by the food, I haven't had ramen this good in a long time. The restaurant clearly runs efficiently, turning tables quickly despite the wait. I'll definitely be back

Aaron and Kyle made a positive impact on my dining experience. They were extremely helpful in making recommendations for what I was craving and on what sakes I would like better. I tried the Kamo Nanban and a beef/pork cutlet. The Kamo Nanban was delicious. The noodles were cooked to perfection - neither overcooked nor undercooked. The duck melted in your mouth with every bite. I usually find duck to be more tough, but this was so much more tender. There was also a perfect portion for duck to noodles, so there was enough for each bite and to finish the meal. The beef/pork cutlet was really good too. I wasn't sure what to expect but the flavoring mixed with the sauce that it came with, and the crispiness of the breading made it such an interesting combination and I want 10 more! The price is reasonable for the variety, for the bay, and the sushi is fresh and tasted great. The restaurant itself is elegant and cute. Highlights for me were all the Japanese fish, which are specially curated and killed with a technique to reduce fish stress. The taste was close to what I got in Japan, and each coming piece was exciting. The sashimi courses at the beginning were also amazingly crafted, especially the first tuna course. Where it lost a star for me was 1) the amount of food was quite small. In total it was about 17 courses, but each is essentially one small piece of sushi. They did give a large hand roll at the end but I still didn't feel full. I did order one supplemental piece, but the other two options weren't interesting to me. Anyway for $300 a head after tip and tax I was not expecting to want to grab another bite after. 2) you have to go to some sketchy pizza place next door for the bathroom. What makes this place so special is their fish supplier, famed Japanese fish concierge Hiroshi Hasegawa. He's known for sourcing rare and unusual fish that are rarely sold commercially, and he sometimes even free-dives to catch them himself. Sushi Salon is currently the only restaurant in the United States that he supplies, which means you truly won't get this exact experience anywhere else. The rice alone deserves its own praise. The vinegar they use is only supplied to a select few in the U.S., and in my opinion, it was the best sushi rice I've ever had. I could honestly eat the rice on its own. The space is incredibly intimate, with only seven seats per seating at 5:00pm and 7:30pm. Watching each course being prepared right in front of us made the entire experience feel personal and immersive. Every piece of fish was excellent, but the standouts for me were the saba, uni, medai, ninjin, and kegani. Joji Nonaka and Anna Osawa were wonderful hosts. They engaged with guests throughout the evening and shared thoughtful insights and history behind the fish and techniques, which made the meal even more meaningful. Parking was surprisingly easy with street parking nearby, though the surrounding area feels a bit gritty, so I wouldn't leave anything visible in your car. At the end of the omakase, you're given the option to order additional pieces or specialty items not included in the set menu. I highly recommend taking advantage of that and trying as much as you can. Overall, if you're looking to splurge on a truly unique and elevated omakase experience, Sushi Salon is absolutely worth it. It's special, intimate, and unforgettable.
