Wow, I will be back! Had lowish expectations (partly based on the former sushi place at the same location, Nama, which was very so-so). But really enjoyed both the food and decor at Tomasa. Tempura and agedashi (fried tofu) are hard to do well (so it would seem) but were excellent here, very light and perfectly cooked. Our fatty tuna was fresh and udon yummy. Beautiful real ceramic serveware. They have a specialty of flame-seared sushi, which we'll have to try next time. OK, nowadays, sushi and a lot of restaurant dining in general are near-splurges. Walked pass this place a handful of times so figured once I had the sushi craving this was the place to try. Walked in and it was pretty empty so we were seated right away. Inside there is plenty of seating and the interior is nice Very random - but am a big fan of the chop stick holder! Food - Mixed Tempura - was good and a couple options of vegetables, however pretty expensive for the portion - Bento Box - was very good but can get the same for much cheaper - "Rainbow" roll - love how the roll was presented. HOWEVER when it came to eating it the roll was slippery and kept falling off the chopsticks - Tomsa Roll - no real flavor. Very disappointed! The presentation as with their other rolls was very pretty - HOWEVER taking each piece into your chopsticks resulted in the roll just falling apart. Tomsa Sushi does an amazing job of presenting the food! However the rolls I got were difficult to eat and for the price I expected more flavor. Disappointed... The OH MY GOD Roll was good. But the bento was an overpriced disappointment. The salmon teriyaki was sliced as thin as my patience was with the 5 second piano loop that would play on repeat. The portions were abysmal and could only feed a small anorexic child. Tomsa Sushi opened where Nama was. infrastructure similar with visual upgrades of wall murals, "good luck cats", and a wall of plastic flowers. offerings: sushi rolls, starters, appetizers, sashimi. chef's aburi (flame seared) specials, nigiri, skewers, "main dish", bento box, noodle soup, beverages. eats: chirashi don (24.50) with soup, salad -miso soup was the usual sweet tasting. salad the usual crisp lettuce with ranch dressing. -chirashi was 12 pieces of saba, salmon, tamago, ebi, hamachi, squid?, tuna, shiro maguro. -slices were slightly better than normal, freshness quality better than average. sushi at room temperature, not refrigerator cold. sushi rice was nicely vinegared, not plain rice. 3.75 stars better than average quality at a reasonable price. temaki: -service efficient, courteous, many check ins. -menu format isn't the usual. chirashi don listed under "main dish", not sashimi. -"specialty" sashimi listed on standing board at entrance.....not on menu. -street parking iffy, large parking lot on the side... read more

The food is delicious! Got DoorDash from here and was sooo good! The salmon teriyaki and chicken teriyaki were so yummy! Definitely recommend! Food arrived very quickly too, so service must be great! I am not sure about the ambiance since we got delivery. read more

Stopped by on a Friday evening around 7:00 p.m. and the place was pretty empty. My party of five ordered three specialty rolls, two California rolls, some nigiri, along with a few appetizers to share, including mixed tempura, karaage, and hamachi kama. The food came out quickly. I enjoyed the freshness of the rolls and this ended up being the perfect amount of food. The karaage was a bit dry and the hamachi kama was slightly overcooked but otherwise, everything else was not bad. My friends and I noticed our waiter did a bit too much upselling for our liking, but I can't fault him to much for his hussle. If you're looking for a casual sushi spot, Tomsa delivers. Last things to note: there's plenty of off street parking in the shopping center and 20% auto gratuity was applied to our party of five. read more

I ordered via door dash and ordered three rolls, all of which could have been significantly better. I'll say that it's possible that these things are overpriced via door dash, so I've included the prices here, but for the price, this was not even remotely worth it or good enough. If the rolls were $12-15, I would give this place another try and maybe give it a third star. Things I ordered: *Lion Queen Roll ($19.95) - California roll topped with scallop and tobiko and special sauce. The amount of tobiko was laughable and the special sauce meant the scallop had no taste. *Peach Paradise Roll ($19.95) - asparagus tempura, hamachi and peach topped with crab meat, peach, special sauce and tobiko. This had a better amount of tobiko, but the overall roll just didn't work for me. And again, the sauce overpowered everything. *Saba Saba Roll ($20.95) - mackerel with seaweed, this was basically nigiri. Beyond overpriced for what it is. read more

This is such a cute spot. Very cozy and festive inside, for sure. Service is great and quick. The portions are so, so small for the price that it just doesn't quite allow us to come back. We ordered 2 item bento boxes (lunchtime but they only have a dinner menu) and we left so hungry, unfortunately. Even the edamame was very expensive for a pretty tiny bowl of boiled edamame in the pods. The fish was fresh and the grilled items were very well cooked and flavorful. Unfortunately most of the chicken was fat and not appetizing. Kind of a large amount of rice to fish ratio in the rolls, but forgivable because the fish was so fresh. I saw some reviews that this place had a soft opening so figured I'd give it a try as sometimes they have decent deals. I went on a Thursday afternoon so there weren't that many people inside but they were pretty quick with my order of the warriors roll. The roll was decent and had a nice sauce. But, the pricing was a bit higher than I expected for the size of the rolls as it cost more to pick up here than for DoorDash delivery from other sushi places. So, it's probably an ok spot if you're in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. read more

I went here with a large group for a birthday. They use soybean oil in the fryer, so I could not have tempura or agedashi tofu. I got the real crab CA roll & seared scallop nigiri which was barely seared so I had to ask if it even was. I did try a friends spicy tuna. All was good, but again I did not try a lot of items, everyone seemed happy with their food, the chicken teriyaki dinner was a large portion. Our server was nice but seemed to get confused/overwhelmed with some things and though it was not crowded some items seemed to take a while to come out. I would go back but maybe not with a group. The fish quality here is good. Nothing that had me going crazy where I would crave coming here a lot but it does the job. Price point is okay, maybe a tad bit much but fish is not cheap in the states. Pretty cool vibe here, if you like the ambiance you can take your girlys here and enjoy a nice meal. The presentation of the the fish is excellent. Overall I would give this place a 3.5/5 on my list. I focus more on food quality and price point than anything. But the presentation and environment is superb. From the picture you can see it is beautiful but small portion size.I was alone and was only helped when I needed it. Sometimes it can be overwhelming when you are asked if you need anything else 10x in 5 minutes. Along with this I bought a large beer. Total was approximately $56. There's a bald guy working there who's beyond rude. I was trying to ask him a question about my order, and he just walked away while I was mid-sentence! Then he kept mispronouncing my name in this snarky way even after I corrected him a few times. The sushi tasted good, but the portions were super small and way overpriced. This is a lovely spot with excellent parking and great food. It's also really close to other diamond district convenience stores like cvs and farmer joes so you can shop after lunch or pick up whatever you need from cvs after dinner. This place used to be called Nama and I believe it is under new management now. I absolutely loved the dinner I had here. My boyfriend and I both ordered bento boxes with chicken teriyaki. The chicken was delicious and the rolls were good too! Not the biggest sushi connoisseur here, so please try the sashimi and let me know what you thought. I've recently also really gotten into sake after this tasting I did in Berkeley, so I can safely say I'm a fan of their sake menu as well. We went with a classic unfiltered Sho Chiku Bai but there were really awesome looking bottles on the menu. Since this place is kind of inside a parking lot, it couldn't be more convenient. It is super accessible and near la farine, peets coffee, and about a block from Safeway. Support this place! It is really great and deserves more business. read more

*doordash review* Ordered delivery tonight and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The sushi was fresh and delicious, with a nice amount of toppings and flavor. I've been getting the lion king roll everywhere I go lately, and this has to be my favorite place so far! The sauce was a bit spicy too, which I personally liked. The beef udon arrived hot and had good portions of beef and noodles. The broth was light and not too salty. We also tried the hamachi kama which was tender and flavorful. It was little pricey but the quality of the food was exceptional, the ambiance very nice, and the service attentive and friendly. Now as Tomsa - I'm very disappointed in the quality & quantity. We ordered 3 rolls for take out, shown in the photo: Left side photo = Warriors Roll for $17.95. The only roll that matched the description on the menu. Center in photo = Tomsa Roll for $17.95 Described as "Bluefin tuna, cucumber and avocado inside, topped with bluefin tuna, special sauce". But you can see it is NOTHING MORE THAN SAUCE & RICE INSIDE. Right in photo = Saba Saba Roll for $16.95 Described as "Mackeral with Seaweed". There was NOTHING BUT RICE INSIDE. The last two were not rolls - they were simply overpriced nigiri. We just had an amazing sit down experience at Tomsa. In no particular order: First, parking is a cinch. CVS is closed so there is plenty. Second, the staff was AMAZING. The waiter was so fun and witty and warm it was wonderful. Third, the food was outstanding. Handrolls to die for and all the sushi comes with a brown rice option. Delicious. Tendon appetizer was great too. We got a sashimi combination platter and they threw in a more expensive cut of fish because another was out of stock for the same price. Atmopshere was inviting and casual. It was a Friday night and there was steady to-go orders but the restaurant was half empty. I might be doing my family a disservice by letting people know from this review that this place is great. Selfishly I'd like to come back here and not worry about lines or waiting to be seated! However the male (the only server) was letting everyone in the restaurant filled with door dasher and a few dine-ins that he didn't want to be here on a Friday night and that he wanted to quit. It's almost $20 a roll and the portions were very small. I think we were all surprised at the portions when we opened our packages. We got 2 lion kings which were just ok. 1 crispy rice roll which I think was 4 or 5 pieces and it didn't taste like much . There's spicy mayo tuna on top but it's overpowered by the crunchy rice. I think they should drizzle at least some truffle oil on it. 1 tomsa roll which was very plain/bland. The two rolls together just felt like rice on rice. We also got a sake don. Went a few weeks back on a whim. I usually go to TGI or Shimizu but I didn't feel like driving too far. Got seated immediately and not too many people in the restaurant. Server was not too attentive but nice when they finally arrived. Ordered hamachi, maguro, saba nigiri and a couple rolls. Food took a while. The 'chef's' were not busy but took their time to assemble. When it finally arrived, the fish was underwhelming and bland. I'm not sure what the process is for preparing sushi grade fish. But, something seemed off... Not bad but the texture and overall flavor were not good. I'll keep going to my usual places, not here. read more
