Delicious little Sushi bar! I was craving some good fish in an intimate setting and I found it at Mujiri. Arrived on time for my 8:30am reservation and of course had to sit at the welcoming bar. Thank goodness I made a reservation because there were walk ups that were waiting outside for a seat. Started off strong eith a good ole bottle of Sake and its rare i find a place that carries one of my favorites (Kurosawa) so i was a hapy camper there. I had the sashimi combo and the Nigiri combo. Both were great and lovingly made by the pros at the bar. It was great seeing them take great care with the fish and forming the nigiri. Everything was so so so good! I totally understand the hype of this spot and I know ill be back again very soon. read more

My experiences here have been night and day. What Mujiri does well is having a selective menu and offering fresh nigiri and sashimi options. A simple menu allows the customers to order quickly and for the restaurant to crank out the items for fast turnover. As others have mentioned, it's less of an Omakase and more of a sushi or sashimi set. Mujiri definitely have their business model set up well in practice. The thing that has always been lacking has been the service. Through my three times here, dine in and take out guests are always waiting until they get some attention from whichever staff gets flagged down while they're in the middle of something else. During my most recent visit, the order predicted an online pick up of 40-50 minutes. I ended up taking my time leaving the gym and arrived at the 40 minute mark. Waited around and noticed my delivery ETA shifted for another 10 minutes. Once the 10 minutes were up I tried to flag a staff, and they told me it would be another 15 minutes. Through watching the orders, they had obviously not even started on my order yet. It was literally 30 minutes before closing when I got my order. It also didn't make sense as there wasn't much turnover for the dine in customers. They definitely need a better system as it was apparent that me and five other parties easily waited an additional 30 minutes each with no real explanation. It's unacceptable for a restaurant to neglect customers or giving timely updates and expect a disingenuous apology would make up for it. I admit that I like that offerings, but for the actual quantity and poor service, this place is severely overrated. read more

Make a reservation! This place gets crowded, and crowded fast -- so you really do need a reservation before you go. This place serves reasonably priced, fresh sushi. We got the ~$25 omakase set -- although I would say this is more "set" than your traditional "omakase," given that it arrives all in one platter without much ceremony. If you're looking for the formal, traditional omakase, this won't be it -- but again, it's much cheaper than traditional omakase. It was definitely good and worth the price. I docked a star because at some point in the middle of our dinner, the waitress came up to us and told us we needed to move to the bar because our table needed to be used for a reservation. We politely pointed out that we had actually specifically made a table reservation, and then she asked for the reservation name as if to double check. But we had already given the reservation name when we walked in and were seated at that specific table. Hidden on the side of the road this small sushi joint is always easy to spot because there is usually a line of people waiting out front! Waited about 1.5 hours to get a seat which was probably the only frustrating part/not much seating outside to wait on but besides that once we were seated. We enjoyed a delicious meal. We got all sorts of different sushis/sashimis/hand rolls and loved the unique combos! The spacing inside was a bit crammed like I felt a little too close to everyone next to me but besides that loved the music and decor of the space! Food: The fish is lovely. Well-seasoned, thoughtfully prepared, high quality and not your average sushi for sure. The menu is limited because they don't have a kitchen really. They do a seaweed salad and a couple of other things and some desserts but it is a limited menu. When ordering the fixed price omakase you need to be careful with "Chef's Choice" because the price can vary a lot depending on what the chef chooses. If you don't care, go for it. But just make an informed choice. The chef does choose interesting things. Ambience: It's fine. It's a tiny little place, decidedly un-fancy, in a not great neighborhood (but fine) and is just simple. It's small. Good to make a reservation. Sake: The sake flight is fun to try. Service: We have been coming here since they opened and I can honestly say most of the time the service is 'meh'. We have had some really nice servers, those who were more or less interested in chatting with us and telling us about the fish but, for the most part it is sort of disinterested and perfunctory, sometimes a bit gruff. The most frustrating thing about this place is that they give you ONE HOUR before they hustle you out. Maybe that's just the economics of profit margins these days but, sheesh, we all need more time to socialize and just be together and sitting for an hour is just so fast. I suppose it is just what it is but, just be informed, it isn't a place to linger and talk. And, the other thing, I am just not a fan of the QR code menus. Necessary (maybe) during Covid, but I am over it. Time at dinner is time to put my phone away. That all sounds a little sour, but I do like this place and will definitely keep coming back. This place had been on my want-to-go list for a while, and I finally decided to give it a shot. I ordered their Nigiri Combo for pickup through DoorDash. You can choose up to 7 pieces of nigiris and 5 pieces of daily maki (chief's choice). I went with the Maguro (Big Eye Tuna), Hamachi (Yellow Tail), Salmon, Umi Masu (Ocean Trout), Kanpachi( Amberjack), Hotate (Hokkaido Scallop), Toro (Spain Bluefin Tuna. The fish was pretty fresh and delicious, and the price is quite reasonable. The only downside was the wait time. I placed my order at 1:30 PM and selected a 7:20 PM pick-up window. When I got to the restaurant, the order was not ready, and the staff told me it would be another 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of waiting, I came back to the restaurant, and the food was still not ready. I didn't get my food until around 7:50 PM. It made me wonder what the point is of scheduling a pick-up time when I ordered so far in advance. read more

Our visit here was long overdue. My wife and I moved to the area about 10 months ago, but this place was on my radar even before that. It's a small establishment, but service is quick and friendly. We came for a late, weeknight dinner, but if you come during peak hours, you may be in for a wait. It is definitely worth it though! Everything is super fresh and the prices for the quality are superb. We got sashimi, and app, and a hot sake, and it was the perfect amount of food for us that night. This sushi place really stands out to me for its high quality nigiri. The pieces are a little smaller than other places, but I like the smaller size. The rice is really fresh and soft, and it's lightly seasoned with some sort of soy sauce. We ordered several appetizers and got the nigiri combo, toro trio, and salmon tasting. For appetizers I really liked the unique flavor combinations of the Umami Tai red snapper sashimi and the Maguro Neba-Neba big eye tuna. The snapper came in a light yuzu broth, and it was paired with baby parsley that added a bright herbal flavor. The tuna came with mountain yam and natto, which was a really unique sweet and umami combination. The nigiri was a good size and a really great deal at $28. I enjoyed the salmon rolls that came with it that had chopped up shiso leaves inside. The toro trio and salmon tasting were also exceptional. With highlights including the snapper belly which was lightly torched on top for a nice texture and extremely flavorful ikura seasoned in sweet soy sauce. We finished our meal with some chilled warabi mochi in kinako soybean powder and a sweet syrup. An amazing meal solidifying Mujiri as my favorite sushi spot in the Bay. read more

My daughter took me to this sweet spot for my birthday. What a gem - it's intimately small, cozy, no frills but they offer delicious, good quality and fresh seafood at very good prices. I've had this place bookmarked for so long and finally made it out here! Went here with my friend on a Wednesday night around 7pm and got seated immediately on a table in the corner. It's quite a small space, so if you want to sit at the bar, you should make reservations on Yelp prior. We ordered their $35 sashimi combo, and their $25 nigiri combo. I opted to make my own selection of fish -- I asked for the salmon, arctic char, ocean trout, amberjack, black snapper, scallop, and toro. I wasn't sure what each fish was when they brought it out, but I think they ended up mistakenly giving me 2 salmon instead of the amberjack )-: It was such a shame because I was offered the amberjack from the sashimi combo, and it was both our favorite cut of the night! Nevertheless, all the fish was delicious and tasted super fresh and I was a fan of the pre-seasoned rice. It comes with 6 classic maki rolls and 7 pieces of nigiri that you can leave up to the chef or you can choose personally which pieces of nigiri you want with your combo. It's important to note that for premium items such as Hokkaido uni or Hotaru, be prepared to pay a lil extra which I did lol. I'm so lucky to have Mujiri in my neighborhood. After I visited Japan for the first time, I was determined not to let the experience ruin me for all sushi back in The States. I'm still able to enjoy the decent quality work back home now, and I've been to many very nice high-quality sushi places since that get pretty close to Japanese sushi bars. That said, most of those places charge triple-digit prices for the kinds of food one could get in Tokyo for under $15. And then I went to Mujiri. Where I can get excellent quality fish, prepared with a quality craftsmanship I adore for roughly $40 per person. Now it's my favorite place to walk in (after a modest wait usually), sit at the bar and savor each piece the chef recommends omakase style. It's perfect. It's priced fairly. Mujiri is a tinsy little resturant with a sushi bar that could sit maybe 8 people and 3, 4-person tables. There was a gathering at the door when I approached. I was seated quickly and discovered I had to use my telecommunication device to access the menu. I ordered the Sawara Tataki (mackerel sashimi) Spicy Tuna Maki (spicy tuna roll) Salmon Nigiri Baja Uni Nigiri Kaisou Salada (seaweed and cucumber salad) Tuna Handroll Sashimi Combo I asked for miso soup but sadly they do not serve soup. Miso sad :(. But I get it, sushi is their thing--and their only thing! The standouts were the Kaisou Salad (not pictured) and the baja uni nigiri. The sashimi platter featured fresh fish and a well-thought out selection, portions were small and the sushi was good. Service was excellent and attentive, our waitress was always available if I was ordering more. I think that this place is most known for affordable takeout, maybe I will try that next time. Staff is always super nice and it is super fun to chat with staff behind the counter as well as other customers at the bar, service is fast and you can see them make your food. However, it does get frustrating when people who get seated after you get their water and order in before you're even seen again. AMAZING sushi place in Oakland! The restaurant is quite small but the food they serve is incredibly good! I love love their nigiri set which includes 7 fresh pieces of fish of your choice from their list + 6 pieces of small sake rolls (small salmon sushi wrapped in nori). Each nigiri piece is pre-seasoned with rice vinegar, soy sauce, and wasabi, which I really enjoyed. They also have seasonal fish that rotate on their menu!
