One was stronger than I was in the mood for but the Drunken Whale Sake was a nice, soft sake that was easy to drink. Came on a Wednesday night with no Rezy, got seated within 15 minutes of arriving. The staff were friendly and helpful. The ambiance is busy but not loud or noisy so you can still enjoy a conversation with your partner. Not great for big groups as it's a pretty small place, best suited for date night. Simple and easy to follow menu. The food doesn't disappoint. We ordered the Nigiri Combo and spicy tuna and maki. Excellent all around. I highly suggest trying the squid that is charred, easily the best part of the combo. I would order a plate of that on its own. Wow the sushi quality here was fantastic, especially for the price point. I really appreciated that the focus was on food, rather than having decor that draws influencers in for aesthetic pics. It was still so charming though! We started with the seaweed salad. It had large pieces of seaweed and even some red seaweed, which I've never had before! So refreshing and the perfect start to the meal. We also got the nigiri combo with chef's selection. I wish I knew every fish that we were served, but I think our selection included scallop and toro! Those were my favorites. The nigiri rice was well seasoned and the perfect texture, which really complemented the fresh fish! My last fave was the tuna handrolls. I've been here many times and usually sit at the chef bar. There's been times I'll buy a bottle and give the Chef around on me and had a great time. However today.. the server was the problem. He messed up our order and the person next to us. We asked him if this was the right order when he placed it down and he said yes. So, I confirmed to my husband it was right and they're just missing his scallops. That he was making a big deal and I'm just hungry so let just please eat it. I got the Chef combo and he has the Nigiri combo which came out the right amount of pieces. Then what do you know the whole order is wrong. I already started eating my plate. The most inconsiderate part was I thought my husband was making a big deal but when we realized the server was wrong.. we had no apologies. They were only sorry to the table next to us because they gave us their order that they took back and placed on their table and they deny it. So the problem is if you guys mess up and only apologize to one table and not the other.. it's unfair to put us in a negative situation and not taking accountability with us but only the other table. The top notch service and great quality in fish. I was a big fan of this spot. It is definitely worth risking potentially getting your car's wheels stolen in Oakland's street parking because it's rare to get find quality that good. My table ordered: - Nigiri Combo ($25) - Sashimi Combo ($35) All Chef's Choice and we got multiple plates of each. Each bite just melted in your mouth and it was so fresh. Each piece of fish was cut to perfection and bursted with flavor. You'd have to try it yourself because it was just top tier sushi. The rice in the nigiri is perfect and they already are pre-seasoned with soy sauce and wasabi so you don't need to dip them unless you want the extra sodium. You can also request to not add the pre-seasoning. The price may be on the steeper side, but I really feel it is worth it. The hostess was running around the whole time and she was clearly stressed; she greeted us and said it would be around 5 minutes, but we didn't get seated until 40 minutes later. The space is tiny. The space smelled a bit fishy (like duh it's a sushi restaurant) but in like an older fish sort of way. The $25 nigiri combo is very affordable! It comes with 7 nigiri and a chef's choice maki. We also got a hot sake to share. I got yellowtail, arctic char, ocean trout, amberjack, black snapper, scallop, and fatty tuna. The seared ones were my favorite. The sweet, butter-like scallop comes in as a close second. Luckily for me, I didn't get salmon (although it's my favorite) because I wanted to try the more unique options--the maki ended up being salmon! The items were pre-seasoned with wasabi and soy sauce flavor so you don't need to worry about dipping. I liked that the sake cups are tiny so we can cheers more often. During the Pandemic, I discovered a storefront with on "opening soon" vibe on San Pablo Avenue. I realized this was a new sushi spot, opening during such an unfortunate time for many restaurants. Fortunately for Mujiri, they had a niche: affordable, high-quality, omakase-esque to-go sushi. Still to this day, for $25, you get 7 pieces of different nigiri (you choose the seven from a list of different fish) and a maki roll, all presented on an aesthetically pleasing cedar box. Their rice is seasoned well and the fish is high quality. I was so happy stumbling on this gem back in 2020, located on the border of Oakland and Emeryville, and still love going back for more. They now offer indoor dining so you can splurge on as much nigiri and sashimi your stomach, and wallet, can handle, but the $25 nigiri combo is still one of the best sushi deals I've seen. Small everything, more like chisai-jiri! Looking for nigiri, and the yelp community recommended Mujiri. The shop itself is tiny, and on any dinner day expect to wait. They can only probably seat like 20 people inside, or you can order for pick up like many others. They have a sushi bar with a few bar seats, but the tables are scant and there's only indoor seating. Street parking is also lucky, if you happen to get a spot right in front of the storefront...but looks like you have to pay if you're around the corner. If you're in the area and can walk it, it might be easier to do that. I got the nigiri combo for pickup, and it was a cute little wooden box that i could hold firmly in one hand. They package everything so cute (very Japanese style) and compact. The nigiri combo box comes with 6 maki's with the fish of the day, and I lucked out with salmon that day. The 7 pieces of nigiri were ALL different, I wish there was a cute little label so I knew exactly what fish I was eating, but they had the different toro's, salmon, yellowtail, and some other deliciously tender and buttery fishes that I couldn't tell you what was what. I think if you've had nigiri or sashimi combo boxes in SF or in South Bay, Oakland's Mujiri kind of pales in comparison. Portions are much smaller than I was used to compared to what I've had in San Mateo or South Bay, and the cuts of sashimi here are on the thinner side.
