    Umami Tai

This sushi place really stands out to me for its high quality nigiri. The pieces are a little smaller than other places, but I like the smaller size. The rice is really fresh and soft, and it's lightly seasoned with some sort of soy sauce. We ordered several appetizers and got the nigiri combo, toro trio, and salmon tasting. For appetizers I really liked the unique flavor combinations of the Umami Tai red snapper sashimi and the Maguro Neba-Neba big eye tuna. The snapper came in a light yuzu broth, and it was paired with baby parsley that added a bright herbal flavor. The tuna came with mountain yam and natto, which was a really unique sweet and umami combination. The nigiri was a good size and a really great deal at $28. I enjoyed the salmon rolls that came with it that had chopped up shiso leaves inside. The toro trio and salmon tasting were also exceptional. With highlights including the snapper belly which was lightly torched on top for a nice texture and extremely flavorful ikura seasoned in sweet soy sauce. We finished our meal with some chilled warabi mochi in kinako soybean powder and a sweet syrup. An amazing meal solidifying Mujiri as my favorite sushi spot in the Bay.

The freshest seafood i've had! Staff is always super nice and it is super fun to chat with staff behind the counter as well as other customers at the bar, service is fast and you can see them make your food. My only gripe is that prices are increasing, but that makes sense given the world circumstances, i think mujiri is worth the little extra $ :)

Mujiri has solid options, and I love their specialty varieties. Recently came back for their classic nigiri combo, but also had some specials that were delicious! They also added some ponzu/shiso pairing which made it extra delicious. There's always good quality at Mujiri. It was busy even on a weekday night.

    $25 omakase set

Make a reservation! This place gets crowded, and crowded fast -- so you really do need a reservation before you go. This place serves reasonably priced, fresh sushi. We got the ~$25 omakase set -- although I would say this is more "set" than your traditional "omakase," given that it arrives all in one platter without much ceremony. If you're looking for the formal, traditional omakase, this won't be it -- but again, it's much cheaper than traditional omakase. It was definitely good and worth the price. I docked a star because at some point in the middle of our dinner, the waitress came up to us and told us we needed to move to the bar because our table needed to be used for a reservation. We politely pointed out that we had actually specifically made a table reservation, and then she asked for the reservation name as if to double check. But we had already given the reservation name when we walked in and were seated at that specific table. Understandable since they do get busy, but it was a little off-putting to say the least.

Hidden on the side of the road this small sushi joint is always easy to spot because there is usually a line of people waiting out front! Waited about 1.5 hours to get a seat which was probably the only frustrating part/not much seating outside to wait on but besides that once we were seated. We enjoyed a delicious meal. We got all sorts of different sushis/sashimis/hand rolls and loved the unique combos! The spacing inside was a bit crammed like I felt a little too close to everyone next to me but besides that loved the music and decor of the space! A but pricey so be prepared to spend some money for delicious food! Service was quick and efficient! Some of the best sushi in the Bay Area for sure! Will be back for more!

This place had been on my want-to-go list for a while, and I finally decided to give it a shot. I ordered their Nigiri Combo for pickup through DoorDash. You can choose up to 7 pieces of nigiris and 5 pieces of daily maki (chief's choice). I went with the Maguro (Big Eye Tuna), Hamachi (Yellow Tail), Salmon, Umi Masu (Ocean Trout), Kanpachi( Amberjack), Hotate (Hokkaido Scallop), Toro (Spain Bluefin Tuna. The fish was pretty fresh and delicious, and the price is quite reasonable. The only downside was the wait time. I placed my order at 1:30 PM and selected a 7:20 PM pick-up window. When I got to the restaurant, the order was not ready, and the staff told me it would be another 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of waiting, I came back to the restaurant, and the food was still not ready. I didn't get my food until around 7:50 PM. It made me wonder what the point is of scheduling a pick-up time when I ordered so far in advance.

Our visit here was long overdue. My wife and I moved to the area about 10 months ago, but this place was on my radar even before that. It's a small establishment, but service is quick and friendly. We came for a late, weeknight dinner, but if you come during peak hours, you may be in for a wait. It is definitely worth it though! Everything is super fresh and the prices for the quality are superb. We got sashimi, and app, and a hot sake, and it was the perfect amount of food for us that night. I look forward to coming back for the nigiri combo next time. Oh, and they can accommodate those with gluten sensitivity, which is a plus.

We have been to Mujiri in Hayward for their nigiri and enjoyed it. Stopped by the Oakland location on our way to wine country and it was delicious! Loved that there are more seating available here. Staff were nice and the nigiri were as good as we remembered. We will definitely be back again!

Great service and quality food. The sashimi and nigiri tastes so fresh, probably the closest taste to what it tastes like in Japan. Recommend reservation beforehand! Limited seating.

In the Bay, this is one of the best sushi places given the price. The sashimi is fresh and buttery and it's just really well prepared. It gets extremely crowded so it is important to make reservations. We usually get the Nigiri set for $28 and it is well worth the price. We also enjoy the drinks and the salad. Sushi just melts in your mouth.

The nigiri combo is one of the best deals in town. The quality of fish is consistently amazing and for less than $30 I always leave satisfied. I would not come here if you have a large party since the restaurant is small, but worth trying if you are in town! Make a reservation because it gets crowded fast! especially for dinner.

My twin sister has been raving about the place for a long time so I thought I'd try it! I went during lunch time on a weekday and there was no wait. It's a cozy spot! The fish was so fresh and buttery for most of the nigiri. She suggested that I order the nigiri combo with: 1. Toro 4/5 2. Sake: 4/5 3. Hamachi: 3/5 4. Ocean Trout: 5/5 5. Arctic Char: 4/5 6. Amberjack: 4/5 7. Snow Crab (+$4): 1/5 Very fishy. Didn't taste fresh. They included hamachi maki which was good. The hamachi, which is normally my favorite fish, just didn't taste incredible when I went. Pros: - Extremely fresh fish for the most part - Great selection of fish - Cozy seating at the tables - Sushi rice was perfection Cons: - Very loud pop music playing made it difficult to talk and took away from the ambiance - Some of the fish cuts were pretty tough - Difficult to get waiter's attention after our food was ordered

5+ Stars! We made a reservation a few days in advance for a Friday night at 6:30--and I'm so glad we did because there was already a wait when we arrived. The service was outstanding, and the food was even better! Our server was incredibly knowledgeable, especially regarding gluten-free options--my mom has celiac, and it was such a relief to know everything (except the specials) is seasoned with tamari. It made choosing gluten-free dishes easy and stress-free. We ordered the Kaisou Salada, Umi Masu Sashimi, Premium Nigiri Combo, Salmon with Japanese Mint Leaf Roll, Spicy Salmon Maki, and the Japanese Plum and Mint Roll. Every dish was fantastic, but the Japanese Plum and Mint Roll was our absolute favorite--we loved it so much, we ordered another! The nigiri was unbelievably fresh--this is hands-down the best sushi I've had in America. It genuinely felt like being back in Japan. Highly recommend and can't wait to return!

The restaurant was packed and seating is pretty limited, so I'd highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The atmosphere is lively and energetic with casual Japanese eatery vibes, and service was friendly throughout the meal. Everything felt creative, rich in flavor, and very texture-focused. Here are the highlights: * Ankimo Mousse (monkfish liver) with sweet potato chips - Made with truffle paste, capers, and chives. Absolutely delicious. The mousse was rich and savory but surprisingly fluffy in texture -- honestly a savory girl's dream. The sweet potato chips added just enough sweetness and a snap to balance the richness of the liver. 9/10 * Bluefin Tuna & Tsubugai Sashimi Nuta - Bluefin tuna, sea snail, broccolini, and fresh wakame tossed in a sweet Kyoto yuzu miso vinaigrette. Kind of like a sashimi-seaweed salad. I really liked the vinaigrette and especially the texture of the sea snail. I'm not sure all the ingredients fully came together cohesively, but it was still enjoyable overall. 7.5/10 * Yuba (house-made tofu skin with ikura and uni) - Served as single bites on spoons. SO good. You can really taste the difference between house-made tofu skin and store-bought. It's much more delicate, creamy, and tender, with a mild soybean flavor that balanced the richness of the uni and salmon roe beautifully. The textures in this bite were incredible. 9.5/10 * Iberico Pork Jowl Skewer with miso marinade - I honestly prefer pork jowl over pork belly. The fat and meat are more integrated instead of layered, so every bite is tender, juicy, and flavorful with just the right amount of chew. So good. 9/10 * Clam & Cilantro Ramen - I've never had a ramen broth quite like this. It was slightly creamy and deeply flavored from the clams, and the cilantro added a lot of depth and freshness. The noodles had a great texture too -- chewy and bouncy. Everything worked together perfectly. 9/10 * Uni Carbonara Pasta - Pasta with parmesan, uni, and ikura. They do not skimp on the uni or roe here. Super creamy and rich with bursts of saltiness from the ikura. The texture was great, but I honestly wished it had just a tiny bit more salt to really make all the flavors pop. It was almost there for me. 7.5/10 * Desserts - We tried two desserts, including the sweet potato brûlée. Both were delicious. One had a silky panna cotta-like texture, while the sweet potato brûlée was creamy, lightly sweet, and had the perfect crackly sugar top. 9/10 Overall, such a fun meal with a lot of unique dishes and flavor combinations. There are still so many things on the menu I want to try next time. I'll definitely be back.

The standouts were the corn tempura, the sushi and the beef okonomiyaki. The skewers were good but not great; I felt the pork belly was a tad salty, and some of the pieces of the beef were slightly overcooked + chewy. The black cod was flaky but I wish it was marinated a bit more with the miso for stronger flavor. I wish I did not order the spring roll or the foil wrapped salmon. The spring roll was soggy bc the filling inside was so damp and lacked seasoning & flavor. The salmon was very dry, but the mushrooms were flavorful and juicy. Definitely recommend reservations or be ready to wait at least 45 minutes. The inside is quite small, tables as well, so be ready to sit pretty close to your neighboring patrons. Very lively atmosphere that can get loud, but could also be fun!
