I used to go to Geta a few years ago and it was quite good. I took my wife there tonight for her Birthday and it was Awful. I ordered sushi Nigiri ..Toro,Sake,and Magro The Toro was Grey ice cold and stringy and flavorless, the Sake was ok..but sake is easy, The Magro again icy cold was an awful looking cut and tasted like water. We shared a crispy salmon skin Salad that was very poorly thrown together My wife had noodles...they were just ok. We could not even eat it ...the Quality was very poor. We know Japanese food..We have spent much time in Japan staying with relatives...our family is Japanese American. I don't expect it to be Japan Quality, but this Sushi should not even be served by any good sushi chef imo. There are other Japanese restaurants in the area which are cheaper and better..with acceptable quality..this isn't. Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious the salmon practically melted, and the edamame was perfect. Chloe was especially kind and made the experience feel really welcoming. She even surprised me with a bit of ikura, which was amazing. I'll definitely be back. read more

Tasty, well priced sushi! It's a small spot so best to dine in solo or with a small party. My fav is the crunchy California, classic American style role that's super addicting! I would usually just go with the simple rolls as the specialities tend to be more pricey and I don't personally feel they're much better than the simple ones. The nigiri may be a different story but haven't tried it in years. Maybe I need to experiment a bit more next time. Hope this spot never changes! read more

I'm particularly fond of their tempura; I think they always get the batter just right. I like that they serve hot tea and you can get refills on the tea. So I sort of hate making this review as they don't have any hot items for a while. But we didn't know that and ate anyway, so here is the review of the sushi. First, the miso soup is basically the only reason they got 2 stars. That was decent. It went downhill fast. The ordered the real crab california roll, and it tasted like straight crab right out of a Safeway jar. I even asked about the source of the crab and was told it's fresh. It was also made like some sort of krab salad and was just gross. Not to mention all the rolls were so loose. We also got the hamachi roll and it was just not it. Also very loose. Then we got the nigiri sampler, and what a let down. The squid, octopus and whatever else (was not explained but had weird mint on it) was so chewy and gross. The rest of the fish was OK but nothing special. The Shrimp was laughable though. Don't know how this place has such high reviews. Wanted a hole in the wall, amazing experience as I read about. I'm a relatively new sushi lover, and Geta really did it for me with the amazing quality of their sashimi. I ordered a salmon sashimi combo which came with miso soup and rice, which really was a nice, complete meal. Additionally got the 49ers Roll which had really vibrant pieces of lemon on top of salmon, and was a standout. I'd definitely say it was a little pricey (I think I paid almost $70-80 for the two things I got). However, I was surprised to see the huge portions of fish, which were of great quality. Considering how full and happy I was by the end of the meal, I'd say the experience was worth the burn in my wallet. read more

To be perfectly honest, before my first visit here, Geta had been on my radar for so long that I actually wasn't sure what I was more excited about - finally getting to check out their food for myself or being able to strike them off my list of places to try! With just a handful of counter seats and even fewer tables, Geta can definitely fill up quickly. We have been coming to GETA for at least a decade. It used to be a place filled with warmth, good food and the kind of neighborhood feeling that made us drive back from San Francisco just to eat here. We had not visited for about a year and tonight showed us that the restaurant has changed for the worse. We arrived at 7:35pm. The young male server told us to sit anywhere we liked, so we chose the counter. As soon as we sat down he abruptly asked us to move to a table instead. His tone was unnecessarily sharp but we moved without arguing. When ordering I asked for hot water. He said they only had hot tea, which would have been fine if it had been delivered with any patience or clarity. His attitude was rigid and dismissive, so I simply asked for regular water. Immediately afterward he began pushing us to order. I told him I needed more time. He asked how much time I needed because they were closing soon. At that moment we had been seated for no more than two minutes. We placed a $130+ order. A few minutes later he returned from the kitchen to tell us that the deluxe nigiri was unavailable. No alternatives were suggested and there was no effort to help us find another option. We changed our order quickly because the pressure to hurry never stopped. The nigiri platter we ended up with came out fast but unfortunately the quality was not what we remembered. The shrimp and several cuts of fish did not look fully fresh. During the meal our plates were taken away almost immediately each time and we were repeatedly pushed toward paying the bill. When it was time to pay they checked our ID once which was already unusual. After the card was processed a second ID check was requested by a different staff member. At that point the entire experience felt careless and unwelcoming. From sitting down to walking out the whole visit was under twenty five minutes. We fully understand that small local restaurants face many pressures and we genuinely want to support them. We also understand the desire to close on time. What we cannot accept is being treated like an inconvenience. Tonight we felt rushed and dismissed from the moment we entered to the moment we paid. It is sad to say this about a place that carries so many memories for us. I hope this was simply an off night and that the hospitality and quality we once loved can return. Only few tables so come prepared for the scene :) I did not as I came with my child and stroller hahaha but we made it yay!!! Staff is friendly and food comes out quick! I haven't been here in a few years. I ordered the chicken teriyaki with shrimp tempura. Two of them were $47. Wow! Prices have really gone up. I enjoyed the food. The shrimp tempura could have been cooked longer. It was done, but the batter was whitish. The portion sizes were smaller as well. I should have taken a photo. The chicken had a lot of fat on it. I'm so amazed from the amount and quality of fish you can get here. Found this hidden gem in piedmont avenue. Place is small and seating is very limited. I really loved how quick they were with the food. I came with my mom and toddler. The space is like being in Japan, very small so if you bring strollers be mindful to fold it. I was lucky and was able to tuck it behind my table and away from others. If you're here the deluxe nigiri roll is so good and flavorful. Every bite was so wonderful. Salmon and tuna were buttery and smooth. The eel was so juicy, and the wagyu was so yummy. But best was the creamy and decadent uni! We also ordered a combo of salmon teriyaki and karrage! Portions were huge and came with rice, salad and yakisoba noodles. It was so much we brought it home. Dragon roll 8/10, eel and shrimp were cold But good. Nestled at the corner of 41st street, the infamous pint-sized Geta serves up decent sushi at affordable prices (for Bay Area standards). My friend and I came just before 6 and got seated almost immediately. Do keep in mind that they require the whole party's presence before seating you, but such is expected when the restaurant literally has just four tables. We split a Karaage don, rainbow roll, and agedashi tofu to share. All of which were great! Albeit far from the best I've ever had but definitely won't leave you disappointed. The roll came double layered with fresh fish atop and almost bursted at the seaweed seams with crab salad. The Karaage Don was incredibly decadent, leaving my friend and I with ample leftovers. When the bill arrived, we were shell-shocked upon seeing the total price and just ogled the low number for minutes. I could wax poetic about the food's quality and price all day. The restaurant's eccentric decor includes cute Japanese stickers showcasing the daily specials which is a nice touch. Next time, my friend and I will probably share two rolls and maybe a special. This neighborhood hole-in-the-wall was one my favorite go-to when I was beat and wanted Japanese takeout. The Chicken Teriyaki and Tempora Comb was $9.95; the California roll was $4.75, so out with tax and tip for less than $25. Fast forward to the "New" menu... There is no combination--there is the Chicken Teriyaki dinner, to which one may add the Tempora appetizer. And, of course, you can always order the California roll, but the old $25 dinner is gone and been replaced by the $46 dinner (say $51 with a light to-go tip). The good news is that it's no where near as crowded as it was before. Back in the day people were jammed in. No longer; no wait for a table. But I actually liked the old vibe--barely controlled pandemonium with great food that was affordable. Geta's price point puts it in a much more competitive market, and frankly, no one goes there for the ambiance. I hate giving a bad review for a neighborhood restaurant, particularly one that I loved, but doubling the prices has soured me. Hopefully the owners will see the error of their ways and return to the previous path, or at least somewhere in between. read more

Server told me the specials and I ordered the sashimi special and spicy tuna roll. Enjoyed it all. They have some more unique fishes than you'd get from your standard sashimi order, there was a piece of uni, scallop, ikura, salmon belly. Fish was fresh. Knocked a star down for oddly cut pieces of fish. Some was sliced, some parts were not, & ended up being a block of fish that I had to cut myself. Geta used to be my favorite sushi place in the bay. Small, mostly takeout place with a few tables, with friendly and efficient staff. Their specialty rolls are a bit on the pricier end but lately their portions sizes have decreased significantly. The 49ers roll at $20 used to be packed with real crab but our last several orders that amount kept shrinking to the point where you can barely taste the real crab. Disappointing! Although you can't watch the chefs cut the fish like you do at a traditional spot, it mimics the ambiance with limited seating (only 4 tables, and 4 seats at the sushi bar) and Japanese-style decorations. We ordered miso soup, edamame, a selection of nigiri a la carte, and chocolate mousse. The fish slices are huge, a bit large in proportion to the rice, but no complaints since it's great value. You can't go wrong with any nigiri selection, but this is what we ordered- - Salmon - Tuna - Toro Tuna Belly - Yellowtail Belly - a favorite - Kurodai - a favorite - Unagi Eel - a favorite - Scallop - Saba Mackerel - Kamasu Japanese barracuda - one of the specials - Shima Aji Striped Jack - one of the specials We got there at 450pm on a Saturday evening, though it turned out, we didn't really need to be early. This place is tiny and that's why it's so good. Essentially a cranking take out joint, Geta has 4 four tops, and 4 bar seats for lucky folks who manage to make it inside. Upon entry, the energy is BIG. It's sensory overload in a way that feels very "Tokyo." Pulsing "good times" Japanese music and energetic staff great you in Japanese. The wall space is adorned with small laminated pictures of menu items are everywhere (many things also NOT found on the standard menu). Not a fancy place but a quality place in its own right. It's no frills other than the quality of the fish. The fish. So simple, so fresh, so fast, so delicious. The hot kitchen leaves a little to be desired (the gyoza are store bought), but the hamachi melts in your mouth and the nigiri slices are generous. What a find! Just a stone's throw off of Piedmont Ave, Geta Sushi is THE PERFECT little hole-in-the-wall joint! We slid into this itsy-bitsy place about a half-hour before their lunch hours were over, and the staff could not have been more gracious. In no time we had our menus, water, hot tea, and miso! We shared a cold, deliciously dressed salad, yummy salted edamame, and then out came our rolls and a piping hot and delicious teriyaki bowl! The cooks even sent out an extra fried roll - how kind and lovely is that? The spicy tuna & avocado roll was perfectly flavored, the 49er roll was HUGE and delish with that expertly thinly sliced lemon on top, and the fried CA roll was on point! This is a super small but popular hole in the wall sushi place, that provides quality sushi at decent prices, with hospitable service. When I say it's small, I mean there's 3-4 tables, and a few seats at the sushi bar, so be prepared to wait outside if you come at a busy time (they don't accept resies). There are bars nearby where you can grab a drink while you wait. Once seated, pay attention to the cute little cards on the walls showcasing the current specials! There's a lot to choose from. They have a small but good sake menu, which helpfully grades the sakes on a scale in terms of sweetness to dryness. All in all this is a solid little sushi spot.
