Geta is a hole-in-the-wall hidden gem sushi spot that you need to try! I arrived with a party of 4 on a Saturday around 7:30pm. This spot can only seat so many parties at a time that the wait gets so long. We put out name on the list and grew hangry with every minute that went by. We were finally seated around 8:15pm. I ordered the Beef Teriyaki & Chicken Karaage Combination Special (~$13) which includes rice, salad, and miso soup. A friend and I also decided to share the Rainbow Tempura Roll (~$10) which included shrimp tempura on the inside topped with salmon, tuna, shrimp, and avocado. To start, the miso soup was warm and soothing. It had good flavor and didn't overwhelmingly taste like seaweed. The Rainbow Tempura Roll had by far some of the freshest raw fish I've ever had. The crunch from the shrimp tempura was also a nice touch. The Beef Teriyaki & Chicken Karaage Combo was delicious! It went well with the sushi roll and brought out different flavors. The beef teriyaki had a nice char to it and wasn't doused in teriyaki sauce while the chicken karaage was crispy and well-seasoned. The salad was light and the miso dressing on it was a cool touch. To end our meal, we were offered a complimentary box of Pocky! Despite being a bit pricy, service kind of slow, and the wait-time seeming forever, we definitely got a good dinner out of Geta. Literally the epitome of "hole in the wall," Geta houses at most five cramped tables and four small bar seats. Menus are set in each place, but the majority of fare can be found tacked to a board right next to the cash register. More dishes are handwritten on sticky notes and stuck in odd places around each table and bar seat, which oddly gives the place a genuine, naive sort of feel. The stream of to-go orders is endless once the place opens, which is understandable considering waiting for a table can be lengthy and frustrating. Service is friendly if frazzled and somewhat slow, and they try to serve as much of the order together as possible.The food is good, affordable, and unpretentious, but it wouldn't be the ideal spot for an upscale date. The only difference is Jiro is dreaming about making it, my aspiration is just to eat the little nuggets of joy till my gut looks and feels like a sumo. That being said I fulfilled my dream in ordering pretty much one order of each of the nigiri. I ordered: Hamachi, Tobiko, Hotate, Maguro, Shiro Maguro, Unagi, Ebi, and a Dragon Roll. All the nigiri was good not great. But for $3.95 each and $2.95 for the Ebi, the price was right. The Dragon Roll at Geta was the disappointment to me. Even though it's almost half the price of others sushi joints, I'd rather pay the extra amount for a better dragon roll. The guy next to me ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box which looked worth trying next time I come. The service was friendly and semi-fast for how full this little restaurant gets. One tip is if you plan to dine-in, go early. Arrive about 15 minutes before opening to ensure a seat. Definitely not top quality but I'm sure that's not what Geta is aiming for. Perfect hole in a wall restaurant for sushi on the go. The interior is snug and clean; full of laughter and bustling. On the walls and cork board are specials they have with descriptions and colorful decoration! They offer a variety of special sushi and little appetizers. Also, at the counter they sell little snacks like hi chews and fizzy marble drinks! As far as customer service go, I find it exceptional. The staff are friendly, both waiters, waitresses, cashier, and all the kitchen staff! If you come enough, they remember friendly faces. Plus, there's limited room inside so you can only expect so much. Their sushi is pretty fresh to me, as far as the fish goes. They have very generous portions for each roll or sashimi they make. They don't skimp on the ingredients, nor do they just stuff it with rice. The udon is tad bit too salty, but nothing can be perfect. The chicken udon is amazing on a rainy day. The prices, you get what you pay for but better! I love their beef wrapped asparagus with sauce, 6.50 but still absolutely to die for! Orgasm in my mouth, and the beef is tender and the asparagus isn't soggy. There's a crunch to it and the sauce tops the flavors off perfectly. I enjoy the avo-hamachi (yellow tail), rocking roll, and the Cali roll with real crab meat and tobiko! The lion king is another roll that's absolutely worth the price! For 7 dollars, HELL YEAH! Theyre always kind enough to let you know that it will take about 15 mins to wait. I suggest you call in and order, and do a take out because it's pretty much elbow to elbow inside and about 5 tables for groups of 2-5. They do take out orders quick, always true to the time they tell you, and its ready when you get there. As far as parking goes, there's street parking and a lot right next door, but you have to pay. A little up the block past CVS, is residential area so you can park for free. They do take credit card, but there's a charge if under 10 dollars. But there's a convenient Wells Fargo and Citi bank right on piedmont ave. Of course they always take cash! Sadly they close at 230 after lunch, but open back up at five. If you go in at 230 on the dot, they'll still serve you! Honestly, I don't know why people are talking about a hype. It's not a hype, it's just a hole in the wall, good to eat sushi place for working people and poor college students. Why does your standards have to be so high and just so negative about this place? It's amazing for what it serves and at these prices, you just can't beat. As a broke college student, I love this place! Geta is as good as it gets if you're looking for some authentic Japanese food but don't want to break your wallet while you chomp on some sushi. The only downside is the wait-time is usually pretty ridiculous if you go during peak hours. The boyfriend and I had tried visiting Geta on multiple occasions but were just too hungry to wait 45-60 minutes. So we returned at a later time when we imagined there would be less people -- about an hour before their closing time, and there was STILL a wait. Albeit, the wait time was much shorter. And the wait was well worth it. I love sashimi. LOVE IT. Unfortunately, my boyfriend isn't as big of a fan of it as I am, but he sucks it up and usually lets me indulge. We ordered a Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, Lobster Salad Roll, and an order of toro and blue fin tuna. The fish was so fresh -- the quality is comparable to some that I've tasted in much more expensive Japanese restaurants. You can tell that the ingredients are of good quality and are the real thing. So for an extra 2.50 to make it a combination for all that food, it's a no brainer. *Rainbow Roll - the fish is fresh, so if I were to order just sashimi, it wouldn't disappoint. And the ca roll was as good as it gets. I can just be happy with ca rolls from here. The inside is really small, so don't try and bring a big party with you and dine in. Luckily the share a parking lot with CVS, so you don't have to resort to just street parking. However you will have to pay for parking in the lot, they have someone constantly checking your dashboards. If I'm ever in the area, lunch here is always going to be a strong consideration. They have a simple formula here and they've been running with it successfully for years. Once we got there we put our names on the clipboard outside the door (we were about the sixth name down). The wait was about twenty-thirty minutes. When our name was called we were seated next to another couple who were almost done with their meal. After a few minutes I had to stand up to let the woman next to me leave and then I had to get up again to let the new woman who was being seated next to me in because it is so cramped in there. My s/o ordered a beer and I just order a water. My water was a small glass filled 3/4 of the way up and that was all of the water I received for my whole meal. I saw another patron getting up multiple times to fill up his own water from a pitcher in the middle of the room so maybe that is the policy now? We both order Sashimi Combos and shared a Rainbow Roll. I noticed that the prices went up. The Sashimi Combo was not as good as all of the other times I have ordered it and the Rainbow Roll was underwhelming. I honestly think we will just be ordering takeout from here from now on if we are really craving some Geta sushi. Having to get up not once but twice during my meal, not having my water refilled, the higher prices and the people (waiting outside for a table) staring at us while we are eating has made me dock Geta one star. We were the 2nd party and decided on counter seats. Glad we did because it's always pretty cool to talk to the sushi guys and get some insight on what they recommend for the day. We ordered assorted nigiri items ranging from amaebi to toro to amberjack. I really liked how our sushi chef placed our nigiri on a plate in a specific order. He asked us to start with the first row and work our way back. The fish was pretty fresh although not the best quality I have ever had. The rice needed a little more vinegar but cooked well, nonetheless. I did think that the fish was cut way too small and thin. We asked for a couple of recommendations on a roll and he made us negihama. I appreciated the simple maki but was expecting something a little more complex. Still good anyhoo. The waitresses were a little slow with tea and water refills. With 3 of them in a small restaurant, I was hoping they'd be a little more on top of things. Just like how it is in the photos, this place is a very small restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. The sushi bar has about four seats, and there are about four or five tables to sit out in the entire restaurant. Let's talk about the food. The sushi was very delicious and filling. They have many different rolls, with lots of options. Some of the food items are repetitive on the menu such as spicy avocado tuna roll, spicy avocado yellowtail roll, and avocado roll. Although I ordered a lot of those items, and they were very good, the menu was repetitive. They did have specialty rolls that I didn't notice were on a separate menu than the menu that is on the table. The best roll that I had was probably the baked scallops roll, spicy yellowtail avocado roll or the dragon roll, both were very delicious. The fish to rice ratio is definitely proportionate. The service here I would say is really good. We were able to sit at a table with in about 20 minutes. There were two of us in our party and we had one that was maybe coming in. They sat us at a table for four people, and we ordered a lot of sushi. The sushi that we ordered took up the entire table. So naturally we were surprised when our friend walked in and sat with us - then we were scolded by one of the female waitstaff at the restaurant. I found that to be pretty rude, her scolding us - while we are paying customers. We ordered about $100 of sushi. We ordered green tea and the staff was very quick to clear our table or fill up our tea the entire evening. The food came out very quickly which is always appreciated. I think we waited about 15 minutes at the most for our first roll. Another thing that I have to add in just to spread awareness for other people that are visiting this restaurant. I was visiting from out of town and I normally do not go to Oakland. I was parked in the parking lot behind the restaurant where a lot of other cars were parked. I really didn't think it was a dangerous parking lot, but my car was broken into. When we were waiting around for police to show up and to deal with the damage, the locals told me that there are break-ins in the parking lot multiple times a day. If you are coming to this restaurant, BEWARE OF THE PARKING LOT. Try to park on the street where there is well lit parking and cover your valuables. Before Covid, I had only been to Geta once. It was great, but we had children and the space was small, so we only were able to stuff ourselves in once. Now that we're in the end times, this place has been our go-to, because we've been able to enjoy it more than we could before. We usually get a udon or donburi to feed the kids, a sashimi combo, and a roll in case we're still hungry. They do a good job of spacing out the line, and our order has always been complete and well-packed. Of course, the fish itself has always been super fresh even after taking home and prepping the table at home. Our toddler and preschooler, respectively, both love the tempura and miso soup. This has allowed us a little taste of what we were missing -- both pre-covid and pre-children. Geta is a small and fast pace restaurant. I think they would do well if they expanded and opened a larger location. I do like the vibe of their current location, a lot, it's small and personal. I do not recommend a party of 4 or more as seating is very limited. Food and drinks here are fantastic and the staff works very hard and efficient. If you ever eat inside, watch their staff, it's rare that anyone would be standing around. Next time I come here, I would either come solo or with one more person and try to sit at the sushi bar to watch how the sushi is made. There is a large selection of food to pick from. Hi I never do this or written any reviews but I ordered a beef udon a cold day hoping is was going to warm me up.I went back to work place hoping to enjoy my udon noodle soup but it was nothing but oil!!!!!nasty oil!!!mind you I paid thirty dollars with a imitation crab meat California roll!!everything became so pricy,they're taking advantage of the location with disgusting food.so terrible.I'm a Kaiser employee and go there pretty often but their food and service fell off so bad.I will never go back and support them ever again.beware!! read more

Screaming, delicious sushi deals are this place's jam. I've been meaning to go back, but every time I try, they've been slammed or some thing has gotten in my way and I'm really sad about it. I like this place because of the many different options for sushi. Pros: quality, price Cons: wait times, service, and their attitude when you want to alter/change/add something to a roll you order. They always give me a hard time and it doesn't make me feel comfortable when I order. In addition, I also deliver for postdates on my spare time just for some extra cash. There's an option that customers can choose for their Postmates driver to go inside the restaurant, place the order themselves and pay with the Postmates card, and wait for the order. I personally hate that option because it requires the driver to wait. But anyways, I wanted to save time so I got the Postmates request from the customer and was on my way to the restaurant. I decided to call the order in while I was driving, to cut down on my wait time for the order. The "manager" who picked up the phone for the order said he refuses to take anymore Postmates order. I explained that it is fine, but that he'd need to talk to the HQ of Postmates because there is nothing I can do about it. But he refused to take my order and I was left with calling the Postmate customer to explain the situation. She thought it was strange too, but that just wasted 30 minutes of my time when I could have been Postmating for other customers and also wasted the customer's time. Staff earns a 5 star in my book Place is super small. There are about 5 tables, but its about as big as my walk in closet, too tight in there for me. If you work in the area I'd say it's a place to grab lunch and go back to work to eat it. The tempura was good. The rice was not. Everything else was just okay. read more

What a cute little hole in the wall neighborhood sushi joint. It's so small, I was extra careful not to fully swing the bathroom door, in fear I would hit the person on the bar stool. Super gracious service and lots of specials handwritten, colored, then taped to the wall. Charming. Tried: -Aji sushi special, good, I didn't particularly like the citrus flavor, but fish was good, two pcs for $6.95 -Suzuki sashimi, sliced thin, liked the sliced scallions on the side, quite good. -Hamachi avo roll, solid, with a nice ratio of fish/avo to rice -Spicy tuna, loved the seaweed salad intertwined in the tuna mixture & was not overly mayo'd -Sashimi combo 3 pcs ea: sake, hamachi, albacore & maguro. Good. Really economical Japanese at $46 for a light dinner for two. It's really cramped seating, I see why many people get take out and found it a bit claustrophobic. Truly one of the best hole-in-wall joints for sushi! I've been coming here since high school; I don't know how they keep their prices so low with such fresh fish. I usually get takeout unless I get here before they open for lunch(11am) or dinner(5pm). Tip: Get takeout if you don't want to wait for 30+ mins, as this place only seats 15 people max. read more

When I think of my recent visit to Geta, what stands out is how bustling and popular this restaurant is. There was a small line of people waiting to be seated outside (and from what I've witnessed on other nights walking through the neighborhood, the wait can be extensive), and the cramped interior felt like Geta could barely contain all of the customers eating inside. There is seating at both the bar and at tables, and you should definitely get comfortable with bumping into or jostling the people next to you when you get out of your seat. The fact that this place is so packed made me think I was in for some amazing sushi. Unfortunately, the food turned out to be just average. My friend and I tried the amaebi nigiri, and while the shrimp tasted good and it came with its customary fried shrimp head, I've had better representations of this dish in other restaurants. We also tried the saba (I believe it came in a roll), which was good (but how can you go wrong with mackerel?). The salmon teriyaki came with rice and salad, and I wish I could say I remembered more about it than just what it came with. Overall, the food was not bad, it just didn't stand out, which I find wild given how crazy busy this place gets. read more

Solid, tiny, local sushi spot. We ordered pickup and the order was ready on top and relatively inexpensive for how much good sushi we got. The seaweed salad was tasty but a small portion. The rolls, however, were very nice quality fish, well-made and tasty. This will definitely be one of our local go-to sushi places. read more

The fish is usually good but the sushi preparers can be irritable and irascible. Who needs that when you're paying top dollar at a place. When I'm paying $70 for a meal, I'd like a nice experience. Plus, some of their pre-prepared dishes aren't good - too much saline. It's a convenient spot from where I live, but there are too many sushi restaurants on Piedmont Avenue and around this area to cop an attitude. I've decided to go to more more family friendly places that treat customers with respect and appreciation. I spend a lot of money on eating out and prefer to spend my money elsewhere. read more
