The food and service was fantastic. Visiting and stumbled into this place. Had to wait a bit but well worth it.

From the outside, you might wonder if you've got the wrong place, if it's a house or a neighborhood joint and you'll seem an outsider. Don't worry, it's a lot bigger inside than it appears, and you'll be quite comfortable. This is traditional diner food. Not great, but a perfectly serviceable breakfast. Pancakes, bacon, eggs, tea, etc. are all as you'd expect. Their home-made corned beef hash is indeed homemade, and while I'm not a fan (it wasn't inspired), at least they tried. This place is popular with the locals, and their nightly dinner specials looked like down-home cooking. I'll eat there again when I'm nearby, but I do long for a more upscale breakfast place in the area. That said, it appears to be one of the better (and less touristy) places in town. read more

I stopped in at George's Diner for a Wednesday night dinner. The place was not that busy since the tourism season was over and I could sit anywhere I wanted to. I took a seat in a booth and the waitress arrived with a menu and pointed out the specials on the board. I got an ice water and decided on the All You Can Eat Spaghetti with Garlic Bread Special ($7.99 plus tax). The food was served piping hot in under 10 minutes. The portion of spaghetti was very generous with a big pile of soft thin spaghetti topped with a homemade chunky meat sauce with chunks of tomatoes, peppers, onions, and ground beef. There was some hot drained water from straining the pasta present. The spaghetti dinner was very tasty and filling and the thick slices of garlic toast (Texas toast) were very buttery. I did request a reorder on the spaghetti, which came out on a smaller platter (still a very generous refill portion) with two slices of garlic toast. I finished the second plate of spaghetti and was very full. I ordered a slice of Key Lime Pie ($4.99) topped with whipped cream to go. The slice of pie was small, which consisted of a creamy filling (white-condensed milk type) in a graham cracker crust. The taste of the pie was very sweet and not tart as I would've expected for a typical Key Lime Pie. The staff here was friendly and the service was efficient and prompt. I would return to George's Diner again, but for breakfast next time. NOTE: Breakfast served until 2PM and ATM on site. read more

Homemade HASH! This place is what you think of when you hear diner. We were up for a weeks vacation and unfortunately didn't find George's until the end of the week. I would have been here more if we had. The hash was perfect. Home fries were delicious. The pancakes hit the spot. I can't think of one thing we didn't like. We are actually on the way right now for our last brunch of vacation. We need the hash just one more time before we go. Do yourself a favor and stop in for some food. read more

When we owned a cottage on Lake Waukewan back in the 80s-90s, George's was our GO TO spot! Their portions were generous, the food was so yummy and the staff were fantastic. Back then it was only breakfast and lunch. I see now they do dinner. If you are looking for a super value for your money and a fun time I'd recommend a visit. I have lived in Meredith for a damn long time and decided that it was time to try Georges for something other than breakfast. BTW, the breakfast is pretty good but on days when they have Red Flanel Hash it is fantastic. (look on the special board for this little pile of Heaven). Get there before 8am and you can avoid the rush of lazy over-sleepers. I have never had to wait for a table. I have now had dinner by myself at George's three times in the last month. First visit I had the lasagna from the menu. HUGE potion. I was pretty hungry so I ate it all. Sauce tasted homemade and the waitress confirmed that. Second visit was on a Friday evening. They didn't serve anything from their menu because they had a fish fry evening. They had options other than seafood and all of their offerings were on the special board. I don't normally eat fried food but they had fried Oysters. How can a guy say no to that? Another huge portion and excellent. Third visit was a Saturday evening. Ordered shrimp scampi from the special board. That was pretty good. Not quite as good as the other stuff because the potion was slightly smaller...so I ordered a slice of banana cream pie and that was amazing! I had different Waitresses each visit and they were all equally friendly and inviting. I didn't feel weird at all having dinner alone. read more

Went in for lunch at 1pm. The empty tables were dirty; no one was in a rush to clean them. Our waitress didn't seem like she wanted to be there. Beverage orders were taken and brought out at her convenience. The food was mediocre at best. The standard burger looked as if it was a frozen patty from Costco. The meatloaf was dry and old....old like days old. The fries weren't bad.... I assumed that this place had its stuff in order..... I guess not. We wanted to go out to breakfast on Father's Day this year and take a ride to Meredith. I found this place on Yelp and decided to try it over some of the other places based on the reviews. I had toast, eggs, homefries, backed beans and a side of French Toast. My wife had similar breakfast but with a Pancake that we gave to my son and she ordered a waflle for a herself. The place is ok and not as good as the reviews appear to indicate. I liked that they appear to either bake their own bread or use locally baked bread. The beans that many breakfast items come with are also good. My french toast was good. The pancakes were fluffy, but nothing special. The waffle was very crispy and cracked in 2 when she cut it, I think it was overcooked. The waffle tasted ok, but my wife only had a few bites of it. One observation is I think the cooks need a lesson in presentation. The French toast, the pancakes, and the waffle were also served on a plate with nothing on it. Usually there is slab of butter on top or on the side with some powdered sugar. If you wanted to add butter on these items like many do you need to use the little butter packages on the table. Really?? Unless I ask for a it dry give me a slab of softened butter on the side please. Sorry, but this place is just not 4-5 star worthy. I was expecting better. read more

I was visiting from out of town and was unsure of the reputation of this place... I decided to get something simple like a glass of water, chicken strips and to get a little fancy, garlic fries. The only saving grace was the water and chicken strips. My fries were dripping in oil. Soaked. *see photo. They served muffins from the morning while we waited for our food that were a bit dry. We ended up here because everything nearby was closed and it seemed to have good reviews. Unfortunately I think the good reviews are for the breakfast menu (which makes sense for a diner, admittedly). We were there for dinner and the food was underwhelming. My son's burger was overcooked and the fries were bland. I had a club sandwich (they had to substitute chicken breast as they had run out of turkey) which came with no Mayo. My other son's spaghetti seemed to be sitting in water although he did not complain and said it was good. My husband said the fish sandwich was good. The place seemed a bit run down but the staff was super nice and accommodating. Overall I would advise against it for dinner. read more

If you're hungry head for the top of the big lake! I find it better than the Tilton Diner. Small, cozy and homey . Everything we tried so far is good. We both like the chicken croquettes. I can't say enough good things about this place! The staff was so friendly the moment we walked in. We had to wait about 10 minutes so they could turn over some tables but it was so beautiful outside that the wait seemed like nothing. Once we sat down we were greeted promptly by our waitress. Our table ordered the house special, blueberry French toast and eggs Benedict. I had the Benedict which was exceptional. My eggs were cooked perfectly, nice and runny when cut open, the Canadian bacon was cut super thick and the hollandaise was on point in both flavor and consistency. Everyone else at the table were mmming through their whole meal and enjoyed every last bite. This place was perfect and I am so happy we found it. Can't recommend enough. read more

We've camped in the area for 3 years now, and finally made our first foray to George's Diner in Meredith. Went on Wed. night as we had heard a lot about their Lasagna Dinner from other campers. George's is located 1 street off the main intersection in town so it's an easy visit to the lake and shopping. Big parking lot across the street. Building looked small from the street, so we were surprised at the size inside. 8 booths, 4 tables and counter seats in the main room with additional seating in a covered porch (wasn't being used when we ate there). Good mix of clientel at 6:30 pm - singles, couples, families, young or old, a good sign to us that everyone liked eating at George's. We ordered a Lasagna special and a fried combo plate with oysters and clams. Lasagna came with a house salad - lots of chopped lettuce with some red onion slices, shredded carrot and chopped cherry tomatoes added to the plate. Nothing great about the salad, but quantity was good (would have been enough for a meal vs a side dish). Lasagna was hot, smothered in melted cheese. Sauce and pasta were non-descript. Meat was large blobs; no seasoning and I really couldn't tell if it was hamburg, sausage or a mix ground together - no flavor. Fried seafood came with choice of potato (fries please) and veggie (beets for me). Plate was mounded high with food, fried fish was nice and golden in color. Breading was light so you could taste the oysters and clams. French fries were a miss - soft and mushy - think the heat might be too low on that fryer. Beets were beets. We decided to try dessert, chose pecan pie and Indian pudding. Pie was ok, Indian pudding was so so - seemed a bit runny and gritty at the same time. Total for the bill was $40 plus tax and tip. For a quick, easy diner dinner, we were ok with what we got. If we're down that way again we'd probably give George's another try - maybe breakfast next time... read more

Ate with 4 friends and had mixed luck. BLT was great, crisp bacon, great bread, as was ham salad sandwich. Husband had eggs Benedict which was perfect. Grill items were just terrible. Hamburger, ordered medium arrived so rare, almost raw. Side of corned beef hash ordered a bit browned came so black I could not cut it. I returned it and the second one arrived black on one side, AFTER I had finished eating. Waitress asked me to try it so I flipped it over and it had not been turned on the grill. She picked it up and said I'll take it off your bill. That was nice of her but I really wanted eggs and hash, not just eggs. There was a wait when we arrived ut it wasn't bad - maybe ten minuted before we were seated. The menu - AWESOME selection. It took us awhile to decide, which was good because the waitress wasn't heading our way anytime soon. She did bring us coffee and water which was lovely but then she kinda disappeared. Ok, order placed we wait in anticipation and check out the place. It's super quaint and obviously, there's a ton of local regulars. That says something. So I'm excited about food cause I know it's gonna be good. I'm also excited for more coffee because my cup is empty. So my friend get's the waitresses attention and motions at his cup. As I turn to see this I also see that the people seated after us are almost DONE eating. How are they almost done and we don't even have food yet?! So the waitress yells over that coffee is being made and she'll have it over in a minute. She also noticed that we noticed we had no food and said it would be 5 minutes. Something doesn't add up there. I'm thinking she forgot to put the order in. Ok, so food arrives and the eggs benedict was AMAZING. Swimming in hollandaise! I hate it when places are chintzy with the Hollandaise. The potatoes were damn tasty too. Oh and the muffins! Super tasty and the size of your head they were. (That might be an exaggeration). I've only ever been here for breakfast, so I can only speak to that end, but judging by the quality of their breakfasts, and the way they repeatedly pull in customers and keep their tables full, all their meals are probably great! The location is a bit tricky if you don't know about it. It's buried just off the main stretch, but there's a free parking lot across the street, so that helps. The building/atmosphere is very basic and "hopperesque." There's nothing fancy about it, and the main dining room is fairly small and fills up quickly. They do have an outdoor seating option for the pleasant months, so that helps a bit. The service has always been prompt, professional, and consistent, and I've been here dozens of times! This is one of their strong suits. I have also enjoyed every single meal I've had here. They make their own toast, and serve their breakfasts with an optional side of homemade beans. I appreciate these homemade touches; it makes them stand out in my mind! Overall, a great breakfast spot...and probably for other meals too, judging by breakfast! read more

Nice little find in Meredith. Quite small and very popular. Line was always out the door while we were there. The wait staff was very friendly and on point. I had red hash with a poached egg, home fries, and cinnamon raisin toast. All good except for the home fries. The HF had no flavor and my plate needed more s&p. Sons pancakes were very tasty and my wife's French toast was delicious. Byo maple syrup as they charge $3 for the real stuff. All in all best breakfast in a loooooong time. read more

We summer on the big lake and visit George's at least once during our stay. Good food and huge portions. Can't beat the prices. Space is a little tight but everyone squeezes in. Almost like family. This time as we were eating the guy at the table next to use stood up and introduced his friend who came to visit " a real WWII hero". The place a cheered and applauded. We popped in for lunch on Saturday around 2pm we were the only party there. We did have 10 of us in our group. We sat outside on the patio which was nice because it was covered and there was a nice breeze. Waitress was friendly but our larger party seems to throw things off a bit. I had a BLT with chips and my husband had liver and onions. BLT was good on nice bread and bacon was crispy but not overdone. Chip were bagged chip from grocery store which was disappointing. My husband loved the liver and onions. There was a mix up with 2 other orders in our group and at the end a couple of checks were not correct. When I lived in Ashland and Plymouth 1985-2005 I liked to go to Meredith once in a while and would often eat here. Recently I returned for the first time since then and I can say nothing has changed, which in this case is good. It's a cross between a traditional diner and local cafe. It has not been yuppified and some of the patrons can be a bit crude so if you cannot abide the company of working people you can certainly find classier places in Meredith. In my recent visit I ordered black coffee, a Philly cheese steak sandwich, and onion rings, with mixed results. The coffee was fine. Not much flavor but I prefer that to burnt toast coffee. Sandwich was mostly bread and what was on the bread was OK but nothing special and a little overpriced for the amount of meat included. So it was a surprise that the "small" order of onion rings looked like enough for four people and was very good. In the end I felt stuffed and satisfied. My waitress seemed to be worried she was not doing a good job but in fact did a GREAT job. It's refreshing to have someone CARE if they are doing a good job!-) Restrooms are pretty clean but cold. So after all these years George's is still my place to go in Meredith if I want to be sure of a decent meal. For newcomers, Plymouth Street runs parallel to Route 3 north of where 25 comes in. It's one block west of 3 and there is parking on Plymouth St and in lots between Plymouth St and 3. You may have a bit of a hike as street spots are few, and a bit of a climb getting in. read more

This is our favorite breakfast spot. Other places just don't live up to the standard set by George's! I always intend to try something different but end up with the house special breakfast - love getting to try a little of everything. And my husband can't get enough of their steak and eggs. All the waitstaff are friendly and do an excellent job managing the large amount of people that summer season brings.
