George Howell is a local chain and this location happens to be attached to the Godfrey Hotel where I was staying. I came here a couple times during my stay and had enjoyed the flat white and latte. Both were excellent. I also tried their kouign amann, it's the first time I've seen it topped with a glaze so I had to get it to try. So good! It does take a long time to get your drink. Mainly because they always have a lot of customers. I love the way they do their drinks. It's like an assembly line. One person pulls the shots or makes the drink, one person is in charge of frothing milk, and the last person pours the milk in the cups for lattes and does great latte art hearts before calling the name of the customer. I waited in line patiently and watched the customer in front of me repeat that she simply wanted a hot black coffee and be completely ignored and dismissed...and asked if her order was an "iced coffee". When it was finally my turn, there was no acknowledgment whatsoever...no "good morning", no "it will be just a moment"...nothing...after several minutes of standing there feeling foolish and watching 8 people queue up behind me (also not acknowledged), I simply walked away to the computerized robotic coffee machine a few feet away and White Castle from the touchscreen vending machine. I've been a regular at this location for over a year and truly believe this is one of the best coffee shops in Boston, if not THE best in the city. The coffee quality is high and this is rooted in the fact that the founder George himself has a history of being true to coffee culture with a love for the product he provides customers, which is evident when you taste it. This particular location is a lovely haven within busy DTX and if you're lucky enough to get a seat it's a perfect place to sit and stay awhile, with a mug instead of paper cup too. The menu is vast and has great options - there are always seasonal specials to look forward to as well (most recently I had the pink cashmere V Day special). This place is the first upscale coffee shop I've really been to and it turned my world upside down! I am a daily coffee drinker but I tend to stick to store bought coffee with artificial flavorings added, and I usually pile on the sweeteners and milk. I was guided to choose the pour over and I am quite glad I did, it was like no other coffee I have had before. The cashier recommended a Yemeni coffee which was extremely flavorful. We were able to observe the process of them making the pour overs in chemex glass, which was very exciting. Initially, I was turned off by the acidity I tasted, but this quickly revealed itself to be a fruity flavor (notes of dried raspberry) rather than the astringency I am accustomed to. My friend got the Guatemalan San Jacinto which had a more typical flavor but with strong notes of chocolate and berry jam. I also got a kouign amann which was small but mighty-- deliciously soft, syrupy, and glossy with the sugary crust . Loved it and hope to be back!! I purchased a few bags of this coffee for friends and myself to enjoy!! The searing is ample, attached to a nearby hotel. It is enjoyable and the vibe is calm. Great place to get work done or meet up for a drink with friends! The atmosphere has a feeling of friendliness and professionalism making it a nice, chill area for an afternoon coffee break. However, the matcha was not my favorite as it was on the bitter side which is normally what I prefer but it tasted off today for some reason. Additionally, getting there later in the afternoon the croissant didn't taste as fresh. I will say, though, that the staff was very helpful giving pastry recommendations and sweetening my matcha upon request. Overall, you go to this cafe for more of the experience than the quality of food and drink (this doesn't apply to their coffee though which is known as some of the best in the city). The coffee at this shop is elite. Had the most perfect cup the other morning while visiting Boston. It was poured in a mug because I asked for it for here, they had creamers on the side, help yourself style. There was oat, almond, whole, skim and half and half. The shop itself being tied to a hotel was massive. There was so much seating so I took a spot right in the front window, so cozy, it matched the vibe of what I was looking for that morning. The lights are low in here, I am all about the mood and this place nailed it. Easily the best cup of coffee I had while I was visiting. Solid coffee shop - enjoyed it very much. Connected to the hotel we stayed at, (awesome hotel btw) it was cool that coffee house guests could use the hotel lobby until a certain time (4:30?). Hubby had a latte and enjoyed it. I had the matcha latte which comes unsweetened which I appreciated. The specialty coffee was good. The cinnamon bun was underwhelming. They told us they are brought in fresh from Rhode Island in the morning. Maybe because it was a later in the afternoon and they couldn't heat it for us. But it was not moist, like a croissant bun that has dried out a bit, and without frosting it lacked flavor. We wouldn't get that again, and not sure about the other pastries, but the coffee and ambience are a reason to return. read more

My friend lived in Boston and urged me to go right when I landed. We gave it two tries which resulted in a 3.5 rating. The first trip was for breakfast which consisted of a triple americano that was heated but not hot and on the verge of being lukewarm. My husband had an iced vanilla latte which was weak, I had the tomato goat cheese pastry, and he had an egg sandwich. The place was busy and line was long, so I didn't ask for a remake. Let's start with the downside... This first part is Food Only: came here on a Sunday 8 am and got the smoked salmon toast ($12.50) and egg, cheese, arugulas and tomato breakfast; as you can see in the picture, I got one slice of bread and few slices of salmon(don't know if the salmon is the best quality tho I'll hope it is), I think 4 tiny onions rings, and 3 little radish (idk why even put them since you can't even taste it) this is definitely overpriced! The egg, arugula and tomato was definitely better and it's cheaper, even has better taste. I understand as a business you need cover many costs such as location, employees, utilities etc... but come on for 1 slide of bread with salmon for $12+ is pushing it. Tho good side, drinks only: I got a coffee latte with oat milk and matcha latte. The coffee was great! I think it was Colombian coffee and it wasn't bitter and the temperature was perfect to drink it, lastly the presentation was outstanding! The matcha latte was also great! It was tasty and the temperature and presentation were outstanding! I'll definitely come back for the drinks but not for the food. Tho I see some pastries that look gods but I didn't see the prices but I might come back to try them. I wish I could give them better rate for their drinks but the food was less than ok. Stopped for a quick breakfast with friends on a Sunday morning. It's a popular location with lots of college students doing work and not that many tables/seats, so we had to be very eagle-eyed to pounce on a table that opened up (haha). The interior is quite nice - clean with generally modern fittings - and there's a small section to the side where you can buy merch (mugs, bottles, etc.) and coffee beans (which I hear are rather popular) I ordered a matcha latte and the egg and cheese [sandwich]. The matcha latte was quite nice. It was surprisingly large - the barista basically filled to past the rim of the large mug, and carrying it back to the table was a really precarious struggle for me, but I made it with no spills! - and thankfully not very sweet. But, as much as the underlying matcha flavour wasn't covered up by sugar, I did find it to be a bit bland / too milky. The egg and cheese (comes in an English muffin) was amazing! The egg was cooked very nicely (although idk exactly how they got the egg yolk to be that perfect shape within the egg white, very impressive), and I LOved the garlic aioli sauce that really tied everything together. Portion size was also bigger than expected - perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Considering the surprisingly large portions, I would say the prices were not bad at all, especially for this kind of fancy-ish cafe in a fancy-ish hotel haha. I would definitely love to come again, but I might actually stick to this order, because many of the other food options did not seem nearly as good/worth (like why is the bacon, egg, and cheese $4 more than just the egg and cheese?) read more
