First, this place is AMAZING! It's in what used to be an old and notorious bar on Main St that had a terrible reputation, and to hear it's had new life breathed into it and see the way it looks is inspiring. The steak was cooked to perfection, and it was melt in your mouth good. The calamari and mac n cheese was AMAZING as well. The real kicker is the butters that go with the steak. I had never thought about dipping steak in butter, but trust me when I saw, you will want to do this. I did the Dungeness crab and horseradish butter and it was delightful. It was a bit spendy, but it was a nice place. $110 for two steaks, an appetizer, a side, one drink, and one soda. This restaurant is a fantastic and much-needed addition to Springfield, and an important component of the downtown revamp. Anyone on Yelp giving low reviews solely based on the pricing is misusing this app, in my opinion. This restaurant describes itself as a steakhouse, so any realistic person would expect the prices to be a bit higher. Who wants to go to a cheap steakhouse? George and Violets uses locally-sourced, grass fed, high quality meats. They dry-age their meats for Pete's sake. Even as a vegetarian, I can respect that...and not be surprised that it costs more. The bar is beautiful and their drinks are fantastic. They even offer a late night menu with some pretty tasty options if you want to wander in late and enjoy a drink and a small bite. Their baked potato is seriously delicious and the garden salad is a huge portion! I have loved every side and app I've tried there. I tried a beet special they had and it tasted like candy - it was so good I selfishly ate about 90% of it, despite there being several other people at the table. They are always offering specials and fun additions to the menu - something unique to this restaurant compared to many other popular restaurants in Eugene/Springfield who rarely change their menus. The quality of their steaks is incomparable in Eugene/ Springfield and the thoughtfulness of the rest of their offerings are on point. We had a 40 day aged rib eye, a tenderloin, and a New York strip. Each was cooked to perfection and flavorful. Our sides were the roasted beets with chanterelles, crispy sweet potatoes and the house salad l, which even that was amazing. We also had cocktails and a perfect bottle of Vionier. Just stopping in for some cocktails after having had dinner somewhere else. The bar seats about 7-8people and the bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. The cocktails were excellent, just a bit on the "little" side for the price. The ambiance/decor of the place I would describe as almost-modern....: darkish but bare and tables pretty far apart (good for conversation) but not a very "warm" feeling to it that I normally associate with a steak-house. First of all the atmosphere was uninviting and blah. Tables reminded me of a pizza parlor. The menu is not the same as on here. There are not many options. I had a dry aged ribeye steak. which cost $58. All sides are separate. Dinner rolls are $6.00, we also ordered a wedge salad, which was actually just Romain lettuce, again additional cost. Prawns are $5.00 a piece. The other person in our party had the regular 14 oz rib eye, which was $54.00 and tasted better than the aged ribeye. The steaks were ordered medium but came medium rare, more on the rare side. The drinks were good except the house wine, which was more like a 6oz pour rather than a regular 8oz pour. My husband and I went to George + Violet's last night and had an incredible experience. Since it was our first time going here (and since we're excited to have a real steakhouse in the area!), we decided to order several dishes for a sampling. We started with the grilled albacore which was perfectly chilled and the shiso flavor was amazing. I'd definitely get the grilled albacore again if given the chance. Then, we had the shrimp cocktail which included three large prawns (hat had to be cut with a knife and fork!) with cocktail sauce and a bearnaise butter. The prawns were fresh and the bearnaise butter added a unique twist. Lastly, for appetizers, we had the special of the night which was tempura battered cheese curds on strawberries and tomatoes with mint leaves and edible flowers. AMAZING. Such a cool flavor combination and each bite tasted different but flowed well. We both ordered the ribeye, medium rare with a baked potato and one order of the Mac n cheese pie. The ribeye was perfectly cooked and extremely tender. The baked potatoes were delicious but I do wish we had even more of the included toppings. The Mac n cheese pie was also good, a little too heavy for me but it was my husband's favorite dish. The crust reminded me of a funnel cake. We ordered a glass of the Pinot noir and their cocktail, Violet's Mule. The Pinot was perfectly fine but I loved the mule! It looked beautiful and, not sure how to make this sound more appealing, just tasted like a creamier mule. So so good. Finally, we ordered their dessert special which was warm donut holes rolled in rose sugar on a bed of vanilla bean creme anglaise with caramel and edible flowers. Our waitress, Laura, recommended that we enjoy it with a glass of port. This was my favorite part of the whole meal. The donut holes tasted so light and dainty and the creme anglaise was drool worthy. The port compliment the dish well. Our experience was great and Laura really added onto it by giving us the cool story behind the mule, letting us know where they sourced everything, and really, by recommending the port. Had a wonderful time trying out a "newer" restaurant in my neighboring city. Heard good things about this place so made reservations by leaving a message on the phone. We did get a prompt response the following day confirming our chosen time. Parking is a bit of hassle here as the restaurant is right on Main St. Took some patience but we prevailed. Service was good but not excellent; took our server a moment to get to us and help us decide on what to order. We tried the bone marrow bourbon cocktail, Violets mule cocktail and the shiso mojito. All were quite yummy. For apps and dinner we shared calamari, fried pork belly and the dinner rolls with beef fat butter. We all liked the calamities best, but all were great. Dinner consisted of the 11oz ribeye while the other couple ordered the strip steak. Topped off with roasted beets, baked potato, sweet potatoes and the Caesar wedge salad. Both steaks were cooked to perfection and the butters were good. All the sides were good, too. The beets were just ok, they needed some balsamic to add a little flavor. Don't be afraid to split a steak and add sides; we shared everything with 2 entre's and had more than enough for the four of us. Had a great meal here with my chef husband and local friend (we are from out of town). First off, the bathrooms were very nice, and clean, and, to me that's a sign of a great restaurant. Second, our steaks were delicious and cooked perfectly! We were at a well-known SF steakhouse recently and this was much better! Our only disappointment was the wedge salad. A wedge should be iceberg cut like a wedge. This was romaine and it was flat. To end in a positive note, the fried potatoes are making for a great breakfast mash while I write this review. Went there this past week to celebrate my daughters birthday. Let me give the negatives first: 1) The decor and ambiance leaves a ton to be desired especially at the price points of this menu. I realize that Covid and all the new requirements probably ruined what could've been an intimate space with lots of tables squeezed tightly together. 2) The rolls served prior to dinner. While tasty, our group of 5 only received 5 tiny rolls which quickly disappeared, but only enough butter for 3 of the . We chased down another order of rolls and again not enough butter. Positives: 1) Server was OUTSTANDING. Unfortunately I do not know her name. It maybe late 20's/early 30's at most, tattoo on right upper sleeve. Oh and she wore a mask 2) Food even better! From the ribeye to the steak burger to the double cheeseburger it was fantastic! And the Calamari was delicious too! 3) Beignets for dessert and to celebrate our birthday girls were delicious! What a gem! This is just what Springfield needs, an amazing steakhouse! We had no reservation and arrived at 6 on a Saturday night. We were seated right away. The decor is very nice but I dropped one star due to the noise factor, more sound panels are needed or flooring material to help reduce patron speaking volume. Our waitress was very professional and we had excellent service. We started off w/ an IPA from Astoria and a LOVELY Pinot Noir from Italy (the OR choice had just run out). Then shared a Caesar Wedge (homemade Caesar dressing) salad that was really divine! I ordered appetizer Mussels in a Tom Yum broth. It was lovely in presentation and very tasty. The RR Ranch 40 day dry aged (grass fed & finished) Ribeye was very good. Our fault was in ordering it rare. It really would have been better cooked rare-plus or medium rare. We get RR Ranch at our local butcher shop so we trust the quality. The side dish of beets was really amazing! The fine grated local artisan cheese w/ green onion and beef fat vinaigrette was AMAAAAAZING! Even the fresh-bakery quality dinner rolls (absolutely delicious) had the flavor of tallow which any real meat eater can taste. We finished our dinner with the chocolate mousse with lovely fresh whipped cream and crispy yummy bits of almond on top. A cup of local roasted Union Farmer coffee and we were good to go. We decided to try George and Violets for a graduation celebration, and I am so glad we did! The romantic, candle lit setting brings a whole new vibe and special occasion spot to the emerging downtown Springfield. I do wish there was more intimate or private booth seating, but the food and attentive service certainly made up for it! We had great cocktails, a lovely selection of local wine, and wonderful food all around. The dry aged rib eye was definitely worth the extra cost. The menu is a bit "a la carte" style, so you choose sides and the butters to go with your steak (there are a few other meal options as well). Service, food and drinks - fantastic! Michael took great care of us. Must enjoy meat to really enjoy this place. The blue cheese compound butter has great flavor on the perfectly cooked streak. The horseradish butter and the hazelnut miso compound butters paled in comparison. Noise level a little high but everyone seemed to be in great spirits and engaged in conversation rather than buried in their cell phones. I would have given 5 stars except for the noise level. Second trip in and still impressed! So glad we are getting some good restaurants into Springfield. The staff is great! Although not exactly a great kids restaurant (kind of fancy) the staff has been very friendly with our one year old and always accommodated us. They even brought out an appetizer immediately after ordering because they knew it was for our hungry kiddo. No kids menu, but I'd be comfortable bringing our son anytime as long as I can keep him from being too wild haha. Good for groups with reservation. Always perfectly cooked steak and great specials. I tried the new George & Violet's steak house last night so you don't have to. The only good thing I have to say about the place is that the bar area is pretty. Each menu item is served ala carte and on it's own plate, on small tables. So imagine: 2 large plates for steaks, two smaller plates for baked potatoes, salad plates, soup bowls, cocktail, wine and water glasses... And its LOUD! I was constantly asking my date to repeat himself because it is so loud in there you can't hold a conversation. The food. The food is expensive and pedestrian. There is nothing special on the menu. My steak was $29 (just the steak) and it was served with butter that wouldn't melt. It was so cool it couldn't melt butter. And it was rather tough. How do you toughen up a rib eye? The baked potato was good, and an additional $6. My Ceasar salad wasn't even good. It was large uncut wedges of lettuce smothered in parmesan cheese for $10. Service is slow but friendly. Edit: I originally rated this restaurant a 4, however when I went home to eat my leftovers, I realized half of my New York strip was inedible; it was entirely fat and nerves. I had to physically pull a nerve out of my throat because it was hidden in the meat and got stuck in my throat. Perhaps my experience is not everyone's and thus suggest taking my review as a grain of salt because other patrons seemed to be treated with much better service and less careless food preparation. My partner made a reservation for our 4 year anniversary and despite the space being large and open concept, seating was organized narrowly and awkwardly in terms. There is a small, trendy bar area and some booths in the front, which look like a completely different environment in comparison to the rest of the restaurant. I worked in food service for 8 years and haven't seen a restaurant with this sort of odd table arrangements; it does not seem conducive for servers, hosts, or guests, and guests placed in certain areas cannot be seen/their view is obstructed by beams which prevent being able to find your server (thereby making the open space concept a bit obsolete..). There is a curtain in the back that hides their storage and food- if seated against the curtain, be careful not to lean back or assume it is a wall like it looks. They stuck us next to the kitchen despite the majority of other tables being open. Our table was in a somewhat cramped, anxiety-inducing space. On one side was a beam that, a swinging kitchen door, and a pickup window. The other 3 sides are tables. Basically, all of the restaurant functions take place in that corner so if seated in one of those tables, you will get plenty of noise, clanking, and clashing of metal, which is not ideal when the rest of the space is supposed to have a warm ambience. Servers were quickly zooming past on all sides and you cannot have a conversation unless you speak loudly, which would disrupt the other guests and the ambience they seem to be going for. I did not want to cause trouble for the server by changing sections, but he had no problem moving us, though after he did mostly forget about us, did not bring us new silverware, would come by at times but only in passing and not let us give him an answer when "checking in." On the food: The steak were delicious, though you will not necessarily find a wide selection. The selection is mainly in the butters, which were very good; we tried each and liked them all! I do not personally think they are worth the $3+ they charge for extra butter. The plates are not good for cutting steak because they are not heavy enough to stay in place and thus move around. Moreover, the presentation could be better; the steak is put on a white plate with two butters which makes the steak look smaller than it is, the food look sparser, and the plates are unnecessarily big for just that one item so if you order two sides, two steaks, and a dessert, you will end up holding plates on your lap to make room on a 2-top unless you have a server that checks on you. We were given one piece of bread in the bread basket, which we split and were not offered more, but photos of others' experiences seem to indicate different service. The chai donut holes were delicious!! I would not recommend the fried mac and cheese pie- 70% sour cream 30% cheeses that do not pair well. The cheese mixture is not just mild, but quite bland. They put a ton of cream on the side to add flavor, I think. Much of the non-alcoholic drinks are $3+. We tried the vanilla soda, which is not for everyone because it tasted like kombucha despite not being advertised as such. The coffee is great quality from Farmer's Union/much better quality than diner coffee. On the service: We were not served much despite the place being pretty empty, not given new silverware when we ordered multiple courses of food, and were largely left alone... perhaps the server thought that was what we wanted, but we felt like we were somehow burdening them by just being there. Odd vibes. All in all, it was a nice dinner and the steak was the best we have had in Eugene. However, we left feeling dissatisfied with the atmosphere and for some reason, as if we did something wrong for daring to come in on an otherwise slow night for them. Aside from the meat, the food ranged from good to subpar but did not at all seem to match the price point of the menu. No one was particularly nice so I cannot recommend for dates or special occasions, but the steak quality might be worth it for people. I would take less issue with the staff not really acknowledging us or aspects of the food if there were excuses for it, e.g. a really busy time for servers or the fine dining atmosphere they are going for. read more
