This was hands down one of the best dining experiences I've had--period. We went to Dueling Spoons for my birthday, and from start to finish everything was spot on. The food was incredible--like the kind where you take a bite and just stop for a second because it's that good. You can tell there's real skill and intention behind every dish. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and comfortable without feeling overdone or pretentious. It felt like the kind of place you actually want to sit, relax, and actually enjoy your time. Chef Billy was a highlight--super personable, easy to talk to, and clearly passionate about what he does. That personal touch made the whole experience even better. And honestly, this place set the bar so high that when we went to another restaurant the following week and paid more for our meal, it didn't even come close. We literally left wishing we had just gone back here instead. That says everything. If you're considering trying Dueling Spoons--do it. We have the equivalent of a high rated Michein Star restaurant/ market, near Eugene: Dueling Spoons, out in Fall Creek They only do 40 dinner services per night. And you only get to do it by sort of an invitation. You request nice, and maybe they will have you as their guest. Some say its an anti-restaurant. I would agree. But they do have to limit it to 40 people, parking is an issue. Yet the family are not your servants for this meal. You are Their Guests. And this flips the old dynamic. I had steaks the first few times, which were cooked to perfection, this time I tried the fish pot pie. OH GOD! was it good. Wife had the Shrimp Wellington,... looked at me after first bite and said, "This is Fantastic." And we have traveled the world. By modest Eugene standards, this is a good restaurant and definitely worth a visit. It is just nine tables in a small place about 40 minutes outside Eugene in the middle of nowhere. It would be nice if they were open for weekend lunch when one could get home without driving in pitch darkness. The food is an interesting and tasty but odd mixture of French and Irish styles. Lots of potatoes in use. Everything is cooked well and sauces are good. The food pairings are odd, like a huge pile of chopped tomatoes along side a tender mahi-mahi - they just didn't go together. Chicken Kathleen is perfectly cooked and lovely but typical heavy and buttery French style sauce. Overall, I might stay with the beef dishes here although they are a bit pricy. The famous DS dressing in a jar is sort of oily, bland and full of vegetable bits. Chef Billy is wonderful and made the rounds twice. The wine list is long enough but sure lacks depth in Oregon pinot noir. We would have liked to see a lot more of these fine wines. Our sommelier admitted she was not yet of legal drinking age and had no opinion on any of the wines, which was not very helpful. This amateur approach to the joint is endearing but we definitely need to remove a star. read more

Let me start by saying that no one will stumble upon this place by accident....it is well off the beaten path. It is also well worth the drive. Don't be put off by the text you get when making the reservation (which is very highly recommended). It is a true family run restaurant. This unassuming little building in the countryside is a gourmet restaurant. This is a place to relax and enjoy a lengthy meal. It is an intimate environment with soft lights, overhead music and incredible service. A good place to impress a client or propose to a loved one. We are seated at our table and presented with an Irish Wheaten bread. This is a rustic artisan bread. The crust is very crispy to the bite, the bread is soft yet dense. The butter is in the shape of spoons and nicely softened, easy to spread. The Grilled Garlic Shrimp Rebecca has tomatoes that are fresh and delicious. These and the shrimp are grilled with garlic and drizzled with a balsamic glaze and served on toast points, outstanding. The shrimp are very large, meaty, and a perfect al dente. The Mushrooms Mark is a combination of various mushrooms sautéed with scallions, shallots and garlic in a white wine butter sauce. This is topped with a large puff pastry. The Filet Mignon with Shrimp comes on a bed of mash potatoes and has a creamy garlic sauce with a touch of Bleu Cheese. The filet mignon is seasoned perfectly, very tender and cooked to perfection. The shrimp is also prepared perfectly and the whole presentation is a hit. The mashed potatoes are very flavorful and handmade. The Sour Apple Walnut Pie was served with fresh whip cream, berries and a dollop of blackberry glaze. The pie itself is very fresh, thick and comes with a dusting of confectioners sugar. I'm not sure, but it seems like the walnuts are candied, they are tasty! The apple slices in the pie are cut very thin and the crust is a perfect flaky texture. Best of all is that the flavors are all there and this is not too sweet. This is the most flavorful and original gourmet meal we have ever had. We ate at this establishment and my wife ordered her steak medium well and waitress said no problem and when steak was delivered it was way over cooked and chef Billy asked how everything was and responded that my wife's steak was over cooked and he proceeded to ripped it out of my wife's hands and steak knife went flying off the dish and landed under a table next to ours and then later told her can't cook a steak to medium well. My thought is if you are a chef and you don't or can't cook something to what a customer asked then your staff should inform people of what your abilities are. Your attitude towards my wife didn't complain about your bad cooking really appalled me. Not to mention that you brought back a medium rare steak and slammed it down on the table and didn't apologize for your attitude and the fact that you hurt my wife's feelings for your crappie behavior. Had dinner at Dueling Spoons last night. The food was awesome! Prices are a bit steep, so be prepared. I had the Porterhouse steak with peppercorn gravy. The gravy is an extra charge but well worth it! After selecting said steak, I was escorted to a cooler to pick out my steak. My amazing wife surprised me by taking me to Dueling spoons for my 50th birthday and WOW, What an amazing experience. As we drove the 1.5 hours from Salem, she informed me of the policy's that were made abundantly clear from chef Billy and simply told me this is an experience not a quick dinner. Unfortunately most people think they should be able to sit down have dinner and drinks in less than an hour. Also, most restaurants want to turn tables as quickly as they can. Not here, and I applaud that. We were not rushed in any way and it was absolutely awesome spending the time with the woman I have been married to for 24 years, just being in the moment. The restaurant itself was so quaint and I loved that they repurposed old shipping pallets for the ceiling. When we did order, I ordered the filet surf and turf and my wife ordered the seafood pot pie. I ordered my steak "black and blue" and chef Billy came to our table to explain that because of his style of cooking it would be difficult to have make it black and "not blue". I asked him to prepare it the way he thinks would be best (after all he is a trained chef and knows a lot more about food than I do). The steak was absolutely perfect as was all the other dishes. The reviews that diss this establishment as too slow should really read the information that is front and center about the experience and not just getting your food quickly. I'm 67, I've eaten in a lot of restaurants. All over the world. Dueling Spoons in UNIQUE! Nothing about it is ordinary. It's WAY off the beaten path in what was once a gas station. Concrete slab floor, the refrigerator units that once held soda and other drinks are still there. The incredible and irresistible Chef Billy and his family run this place. Billy not only cooks, but entertains in the dinning room and he's hilarious. Everyone is his friend (almost everyone) and observing the goings on there is half the fun of eating there. The portions are huge and everything we had was exceptional and delicious! From the house salad to the Caprese salad to the home made bread to the wine list to the entrees. Everything was fantastic. If you order a steak you're taken into the meat locker where you select that steak and ring a bell that's heard throughout. We had the pork tenderloin, short ribs with a puff pastry and a porterhouse steak. As you can see...not small. Leftovers galore. The desserts are incredible too. Where do I start.... We pulled up to the cutest little building nestled in the countryside of Fall Creek.... To be honest, at first glance you wouldn't know it was a restaurant but as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by smiling faces, an incredibly well thought out ambiance, and the smell of dinner prep lingering in the air. The Chef is hilarious. He came out and talked to most of the tables, introducing himself and cracking hilarious jokes. Our server (the chef's daughter I presumed) was the epitome of quality and sound service. The entire staff did an amazing job making us feel like we were regulars dining in their home. I ordered the porterhouse and let me tell you... each bite brought me closer to God. Only a divine creator could've created a cow so delicious and such an eccentric and insanely talented chef to cook it. He did a masterful job creating both. I kept thinking, "this meat is too good, I bet the potatoes aren't that great". But then I tried the potatoes and I actually said out loud, "you have GOT to be kidding me"... after destroying half the potatoes, I noticed these carrots in a dish and I thought, "nothing is this perfect. The carrots probably suck"... but then I tried them and I said, "are you f*cking kidding me?!?" My wife asked, "what?!?" To which I replied, "he could've served me a bowl of just these carrots and I would've walked out of here satisfied. Needless to say, I ate all 32 ounces of that ridiculously delicious cow and I am now sitting at home smiling, feeling a bit meat drunk (it's a thing, Google it) and telling myself, "I'm going to be talking about that meal for months". We had heard all the local hype about this place. To be honest, we thought, sure, another attempt at "hoity toity" with this New York chef coming to our casual community. Well, we were wrong. Oh. My. Word. All of the "staff" (the Reid family) were personable, relaxed, friendly and VERY hospitable. We started with the famous Irish Wheaten bread, which is full-bodied and has a unique, wonderful taste. Then I had the Caesar salad, which was excellent and my wife tried the House salad, which was over the top good (she let me taste hers and I'm ordering that next time). I had the Chicken Kathleen, which was cooked to perfection and had a wonderful, rich flavor. My wife had the Salmon Sean and loved it. The roasted veggies with our meals were to die for. From the looks of the building on the outside, you might think, "really?" but the inside is casual, tastefully done and simple. It creates a very comfortable dining experience. Their website says this is not fast food and it isn't. But we were there a total of about an hour and a half, which we feel is about right for a nice dinner out. Definitely not rushed, but the service was not slow. The Reids are very attentive. Prices are comparable to most any nice dinner restaurant in our area. We will definitely go back. The first thing my friend said this morning was "I can't wait to go to Dueling Spoons for dinner tonight." So disappointing... It was over an hour and a half for us to get our entrees. The staff sets the mood in such a wonderful way. It's warm and welcoming almost like family. While waiting to be seated we enjoyed what I believe is the best tasting Irish Red Ale I've ever had. It was created by the restaurant and carries thier name on the label. We were seated in a short time and were helped with the menu choices. The staff are friendly and attentive and the chef makes fun and unexpected visits to the dinning room. The star though is the food. The presented menus held more options than one could eat at one time. I skipped the Caesar salad for Mushrooms Mark. I ordered Chicken Joyce which did not disappoint. Three juicy chicken slabs with a creamy mushroom tarragon Madeira sauce accompanied by mashed potatoes and sautéed summer squash. More left overs since I had my eye on the flourless chocolate torte. Nice little hole in the wall type restaurant way off the beaten path. I had the seafood pot pie & my wife had the surf & turf. Mine was ok, not great, & I would not order it again. She only ate about half of hers, so I got to finish it. The lobster tail was huge & delicious. the steak was ok, but I don't care much for steak so I can't really say if it was good or great. Desert was very good (brownie sundae) . What an incredible experience! From the moment my dad was able to get a reservation, to the moment we left; the entire experience was amazing. Chef Billy and his staff made my parent's 45th anniversary truly special. His son was our waiter, very kind, knowledgeable and attentive. I had the seafood pot pie and I highly recommend it! It's filled with lots of fish, scallops, veggies, and the sauce is very flavorful. The crab cakes were amazing, the yellow sauce that comes on it was absolutely delicious. My parents loved their meals. On top of how wonderful the food was, they surprised us by coming out singing happy anniversary with a signed card from the staff. They truly went above and beyond to make it such a memorable night for them. I love that the food is cooked fresh, prepared one by one as it comes in. We finally ended having dinner with some friends at this hidden gem. I have been seeing posts about this place all over social media, as well as hearing about it from word of mouth from others. I have been so excited to try the surf, and turf. I do not usually like steak any where except home. Once in a while I make an exception. In this case, I am glad I did. I generally go for the rib eye cut. I knew that one would be way too big for me. So I went with the filet mignon. Let me tell you, the meat was so tender, and so full of flavor. Also paired well with the special sauces Chef Billy prepares. Chimi churi, a special blue cheese melted into a dip, I think the other one is a gravy. All full of flavor. My favorite being the blue cheese. The home made bread was also a hit. I didn't eat much of it. I do not eat a lot of bread. The appetizers were delicious. Mussels, and clams. Also the shrimp. I believe the shrimp had a balsamic glaze on them. They also had roasted tomato's. They were so good, they made someone who doesn't like them enjoy them. (I love them.) I'm not sure what my friends main dish was called. It was shrimp baked in a pastry looking shell. He said it was delicious. Our other friend had the swordfish, and scallops. He said it had a hoisin type sauce, and ate every bite. Also said was delicious. I hear they do not have this one on their menu often. So if you see it, and it sounds good, get it. My guy ordered the rib eye. No surf. He also loved his meal. The service we had from start to finish was excellent. One of Chef Billy's Son's was our server. We were able to interact with two of them. Great family, and great service. I highly recommend going here, it doesn't matter if it is a celebration, or just want a great meal. Just go. There seem to be a lot of varying stories around Dueling Spoons so I was apprehensive coming here, I truly didn't know what to expect. We booked our reservation for six well in advance and received the instructions emails beforehand so that was almost intimidating, instructions for a restaurant?! But it makes sense now that we've been there. I really liked the setting and design that they did inside. It was very comfortable, low lighting and warm feeling (kind of a french winery country thing). Our table was in the back corner which was nice to feel "out of the way". We all ordered appetizers and drinks, entrees and desserts because, you know, "when in Rome"... I tried the mimosa flight, and shared the grilled garlic shrimp. The shrimp was good, had a bit of a bruschetta app thing going for it with the tomatoes, garlic and balsamic. All of the mimosa flavors were good but I think I liked pineapple best. For my main I ordered the Salmon Sean (and I ordered it from Sean!). It was great, I only encountered one bone but that's fine. Everything on my plate was delicious, lots of flavor and just the right size. For dessert, I got the brownie sundae and my husband ordered the poached pear. The sundae was great, it's hard to get that wrong. Loved the little spoon duo on top too. Husband said the pear tasted good but didn't love the creme part and was just a bit disappointed in it. Chef Billy came and talked to us a couple of times, even got a couple perks from the evening but I don't want to give anything away. We went out to dueling spoons a few months ago for brunch. We got the tomahawk steak, which came atop of a full loaf of garlic bread and six perfectly poached eggs with the most amazing hollandaise sauce.
