a plate of fish and chips
    Jenna D.

Three stars and one star is fully devoted to the service. Otherwise.... Okay so I can see why it has a cult following - it's a little place in Mount Vernon where the locals have their usuals, service is very friendly, and it's a no frills and no pretense. We got a French Dip and the full plate of fish and chips - which you can get grilled - which came with a soup. The soup was good, if not a little confusing because it was basically stew, but with a soupy broth. The fish and chips were pretty basic - I've had better/crispier ones elsewhere, but there was a hefty portion. I can't say I tried the French Dip, but my friend who is a sucker for roast beef, did not finish it. We did, however, finish the curly fries. I swear they were good just because they were curly. Overall, I'd say that everything probably needed another 30 second sin the fryolator/toaster/warmer...things aren't BAD per se, but little tweaks could make them a lot better. I'd also say things could be a little more spice-ful and seasoned but I'm glad I tried this MV staple and can now have an informed opinion.

We had the oyster shooters and the onion ring appetizers. And the Ribeye which came with clam chowder and a salad. $55. The oyster shooters were huge and super flavorful. The best part of the meal. The onion rings were hot and plentiful. The clam chowder was better than expected. It was hearty and had pretty good flavor. However, just when everything was going great the steaks came out bland. My wife described them as watery. The service was pretty good except for some errors with our bill which were corrected.

This review is completely devoted to this restaurant's amazing employee SHANNON!................. Hubby and I are here to visit dear friends after our grandson's graduation last Friday in Redmond Oregon. Our friend suggested Gene's as it is right down the street from her apartment complex.. We enter and seat ourselves ( as sign instructed). The place was fairly crowded for a Monday night and the bar too. As I looked around I only noticed one gal that appeared to be the only server? Hmmmm...I thought. This could be a long night. Anyway...after several minutes SHANNON appeared with menus and asked us for our drink orders. We ordered drinks. It was, what seemed a long time to have them delivered. Finally they came and we ordered our food. I wanted another cocktail later and thought it would be faster for me to go order directly from the bar.......So off I went. Are ya'll ready for this????.....I get up to the bar and SHANNON is bartending too! She looked at me and I asked her "Don't tell me you're the bartender too"?! "Yep" she said. . I told her she was amazing and I was so impressed by her Multi Tasking skills! I went back to my table without ordering a drink. A few minutes later SHANNON kindly sets a cocktail in front of me...A good one! Lol. We received our meals, that were all delicious, shortly after. I asked her if she was the owner of Gene's? She HAD to be! "No" SHANNON said. I have been here for 16 years. Well let me tell you owners of Gene's Pub......SHANNON is a gift to your business! I want to thank her for the professionalism, service and kindness. Shannon...you're a ROCKSTAR!!

I don't know what the negative reviews are about... it's pub grub! I would give Gentlemen Gene's 3.5 stars if I could. Maybe it's just me, but if I'm going into a pub in Skagit County, I'm not expecting caviar and tiramisu. I'm expecting a menu that is heavy on fried food, most of which is probably coming out of a bag of frozen items from Costco. We went on a Thursday afternoon. They have an extensive menu. My wife had 2 mini cheeseburgers and a salad, my stepson had a bacon cheeseburger ('No veggies or sauce') and I ordered a small dinner salad and the fried oysters. We shared a basket of cheese sticks. The cheese sticks were exactly as we expected, with 3 dipping sauces. Tasty! My wife's mini cheeseburgers were good, nothing to write home about. Our salads were good. My stepson's only complaint about his bacon cheeseburger was that it had mayonnaise on it. I can't argue with him - his 'no sauce' request should have covered mayonnaise. The burger looked really good, and had plenty of bacon! My fried oysters were OK. I don't really order them enough to have anything to compare them to. I was bummed that the darkest/heaviest beer option was Black Butte's Porter. Our server - Mandi - was great! Friendly and attentive. We felt we got great service. All in all, I can see us stopping in at Gentlemen Gene's again.

Drove by to see if they were opened back up after the stay at home order and they were! Been coming here for years and never really been dissatisfied. The servers all have good attitudes and are friendly. Sometimes it takes a bit long to get food if they're busy or short staffed but I'm here to relax and am never in a hurry so it's never been an issue for me. Plus, the food is worth the wait and honestly, it's what has kept me coming back over the years. Definitely a good place to eat and my kid loves it too.

We have lived here for over 15yrs and I had never heard of this place. We really liked it. It's a great place to go for a quiet dinner. Not loud and the staff is very friendly. I had steak i liked that the potatoes toppings were in a side container, my man had the shipmaster. I won't say it's the best food in town, but for a friendly local business with good food and a clean environment, I mean even the salt and pepper shakers were clean so much so I had to take a pic, this is one thing that tends to bother me at restaurants dirty condiment containers. Someone mentioned the bathroom being dirty but I didnt use it so I cant comment on that part.

Service took forever and the food was pretty bad. They couldn't even cook mini corn dogs right ‍. The fish and chips were soggy.

I noticed a bunch of slates with beer names and spotted a cider from Terramar advertising a Strawberry Rhubarb cider and decided I wanted to try that flavor combination. It was sweet with a little tart aftertaste. For my meal I opted for the Porterhouse Cheese Curds as an appetizer and the Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich with fries for my main dish. The cheese curds were nicely battered and fried and the housemade ranch was a nice accompaniment to the cheese curds. The spicy crispy chicken sandwich was only crispy on the outside where the batter was applied! The rest of the chicken was tender and juicy. So tasty . I didn't think the sandwich was all that spicy, but that would be my fault because I eat jalapeno like candy and routinely use habanero hot sauce on my food. Even though I didn't think it was all that spicy I did enjoy the flavor and crunch of the sandwich. There was a bunch of steak fries served with my sandwich. Excellent fries, but way too many for me to eat them all. I think I probably ate only 1/4 of them!! I was very tempted to order a slice of the chocolate cheesecake with housemade fudge for dessert, but I was stuffed by my appetizer and meal.

The service was fast and friendly, and the prices were super affordable. I especially appreciated that they had one of my favorite seltzers, from Stemma Brewing, on tap! We enjoyed a couple of appetizers. The calamari was crispy and delicious, and served with a side of tasty aioli. Although not quite enough aioli, as we ran out about half way through the calamari and had to order more. (Tbh I was kinda surprised when I saw they had charged us for the "extra" aioli.) The hot artichoke dip was good, too, though the portion was pretty small for the price. I'd come back again, but maybe during happy hour as it might be a better value.

The patio faces one of the main streets so there was lots of good people watching. I ordered a beer flight and was very satisfied with all four of my selections: Prickly Pear Kolsch - it was creamy and easy to drink, bursting with prickly pear flavor; just the right amount of tart and sweet. Lightly Buzzed Honey Lavender Blonde - my favorite of the flight; it was very hoppy but light and refreshing and well balanced by intense lavender flavor and a smooth honey finish. Get it! You won't regret it. High Five Hefe - lighter/less hazy and more hoppy than most hefes it made for a unique and complimentary beer on my flight. Pommeroys Citra Pale Ale - a perfect West Coast IPA. To eat, my pup got the Lucky Dog hamburger (which the chef pre-cut) and loved it! He chowed down in less than a minute. And I got the Mac & Cheese Burger (sub a veggie patty) with the Garlic Fries. It was a very indulgent meal to say the least. The burger was loaded with so much Mac & Cheese that I couldn't even put the top bun on it and pick it up. lol I had to knife and fork the whole thing which was totally worth it. The Mac is a classic home style recipe (think Stouffers but better). Their fries are shoestring and super crispy and salty. And they loaded those up with an amazing garlic aioli and Parmesan. I got a side of their house-made curry aioli and was obsessed with it. Every fry that didn't have sauce or parm got a dip in that deliciousness and I added it to quite a few of the burger bites too. All in all, a great brewpub that I look forward to returning to in the future!

Our server was Rainey, she was awesome, very attentive, and came to our table right away to take our order. The atmosphere at Temperate Habits is very nice, there is outside seating but we sat inside due to the bright evening sun. Our meals took quite a while to arrive, I think we were at the tail end of the dinner rush and my guess is they have a small kitchen. My classic cheeseburger was about the most generic, predictable, and utterly boring burger I could imagine, and for $17 I would certainly not return for that or the mundane shoestring fries. The burger patty, bun, and fries were all non creative and the there was nothing even the slightest bit unique about my burger, in fact I swear it is the exact same burger that the Skagit River Brewery serves just around the corner. The surprise entree was the Crab and Lobster Tots, now whoever thought that would be good? The plate looked very strange to say the least but I have to say.... this dish was really good! So you'd think if they could create that total mayhem of a dish that they could get far more creative with the burgers and least have a house burger sauce or a higher quality bun for $17, something? I might return to Temperate Habits to have a drink with friends and share some tots, because they give you a large enough portion for four people, but I would certainly look elsewhere for a good burger. 5 stars for atmosphere and service, 1 star for the burger, 4 stars for the tots.

Now you all know that I am one very picky eater I will be able to identify the best thing or the worst in a bite or two. It is 1:30 on a Thursday afternoon. I had heard they had good fish chips. So I already knew what I was going to be ordering. Hubby was going to order the same thing except a spied clubhouse sandwich, which is really hard to find these days and we just ordered a clubhouse sandwich with chili and we would split the both meals mine and his. Well let me tell you I was kind of regretted offering to split my fish and chips after the first bite. But I quickly snatched a half of his sandwich as he was chowing down on the lovely brisket chili. I knew it had to be extra extraordinary as he didn't even offer the smallest of bites to his wife. He just kept going on about how amazing that chili was. I never did get a bite. I didn't even ask I suppose in hindsight I should've because he informed me three different times. I would come here just for this chili. Now I suppose you all know by now my hubby will eat just about anything. He will rarely ever say something is bad. Hearing him say something is spectacular is just shocking . He informed me that that was the best chili he has eaten outside of New Mexico. I look at him and inform him that the fries are really very good. He looks at me with utter shock like I said the sea is pink with kangaroos swimming in it. He doesn't understand the words coming out of my mouth because I never say them I'm not a FRY girl. In fact I rarely even order fries, but it's fish and chips after all, you gotta do it. Mind you I'm about to take my first bite of this very nice very light very very, very beautiful piece of deep fried fish. I have my lime and squeeze it onto my first fish then dip a lovely piece of fish into the well bodied tartar sauce, and Nirvana absolute pure Nirvana. I am beyond aesthetic that this fish is within a mile of my doctors office. I am thrilled beyond words that it is not oily. It's not greasy. It is not overcooked. It is just perfection. I know that word coming out of my mouth is uncommon. I get that I'm gonna stand behind that fish until I'm dead. It was that good! Let's talk about that sandwich shall we this is Hand cut ham smoked turkey is beautiful the garlic mayo is amazing. The bacon is a little too crisp for me, but the toast is toasted correctly a little too much mayo on center toast but other than that the lettuce has not wilted by some miracle, and it is falling apart halfway through, but you can't expect anything more. Everything that was supposed to be dry was dry. Everything that was supposed to be moist was moist everything it was supposed to be crisp was crisp . There's three pieces of toast trying to hold that whole puppy together. It was an exceptional sandwich, and I finished a half of it, which I never eat that much food in one sitting so Hubby had a piece of fish. We took a piece of fish home. I had a piece of fish he ate the terrific bowl of chili and we both finished our sandwiches. Was it worth the $60? Hell yes all day long will I make it a monthly habit probably not but when I need fish and chips, I don't have to agonize any longer where I can find such Nirvana . Service by the way was great. Our waitress was absolutely friendly and sweet. She was the only one there she was taking way more tables and tending the bar too. Personally she had no business taken care of that many tables and the bar too but she handled it all beautifully and she gave us some advice. We talked about me being a FOOD snot /snob and she gave us a couple of names of restaurants if we were going to be visiting other areas of the PNW. I had admitted that I had not found any edible fish and chips in the Stanwood Camano area. Kristin thank you so very much for everything. We will be bringing our out of town guests to enjoy the great service and outstanding food soon! But next time I will have to just make sure that I get some of that chili for myself since clearly the hubby won't share his. Charming atmosphere and bathroom had both soap and paper towels! Table was clean. Tv was set for fifa and was not too loud at the time of day. The food arrived quickly and everything that was supposed to be hot was hot and everything that was supposed to be cold was cold and there's plenty of napkins and silverware. We didn't have to ask for anything. So it is an easy 5 star food service and atmosphere.
