So let me start this review with some context. I woke up today feeling pretty down, and was driving around Alhambra running errands while looking for a place to eat. As I'm driving I spot this bright yellow restaurant, so I decide to give it a try. Let me just say this- it's amazing, my new favorite brunch place. The restaurant itself seems like something you would find in Europe, it's cozy but elegant. I sat inside, the radiant yellow naturally cheers you up. I ordered poached eggs over potatoes with cheese. Amazing! Perfectly cooked. Often times my problem with restaurant is that they serve huge portions - that are quantity over quality. My dish was quality over quantity - perfectly sized that I left feeling full, but not like I had overeaten. The service was great. The chef even came out and asked me how I liked my dish. Was invited to an after church luncheon and this was THE spot! Had pizza and a great salad. For a good sized group, the staff was on top of it. Sitting outside, the patio was a great place to have conversations and we could not hear any street noise, despite being on a main street. read more

Just came to this little spot for the first time on the recommendation of a friend and to support as many small, family owned business during all the coronavirus madness and I'm glad I did. Delicious ! This hidden little gem in Alhambra offers a delicious selection of pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and salads. Amazing service , quality food and a great staff. The restaurant is so cute, clean and it has a cute patio, lots of parking. The food was good just the service from the cashier a girl with long black hair and fake eye lashes was bad. I smiled when I came in and she didn't even make eye contact with me and her demeanor was so stand-offish when a few minutes before I saw her laughing and being nice to an older gentleman customer. She rudely asked me if I wanted soup or salad and I said I'd take both and she said it's "OR" then when I asked what soup it was she said in a condescending tone "minestrone" She then rudely told me my food will take about 15 minutes and turned her back on me. Genovese's is one of my favorite local restaurants and among the best Italian places I know of. It's smaland that's good cause the people are nice and the food is homemade delicious. I have been here three times now. Last two times I have ordered #5 lunch special. Spaghetti and meatball with marinara sauce, salad, garlic bread AND a glass of wine. $13.14 total! The sauce is superb and it's obviously fresh made. Salad with Italian dressing was fresh and presentable. Bread cooked just right. And they played some great Salsa music. It's now under new ownership, but the food was as good as I remembered. Great pizza, excellent service. The did widen the front door, so if you now order the Jumbo pizza, you no longer have to tilt the pizza, to get through the front door. Highly recommended. read more

After reading all the reviews about the owners switching my boyfriend and I decided to try it for the first time and it was really good! We got the one with all the meats I believe and it was so delicious. The only thing is I feel that the employees aren't rude but they can be way more helpful. I just feel because I wasn't eating there and I was waiting for my food they don't help you after you order. It's something they can work on. My pasta was good and I have no problems with the food. I'll be coming agin to try a different pizza and I hope there employees can offer at least water if your waiting for your order. read more

Pretty good Italian joint in Alhambra. It's small and cozy if you're into that kind of decor. I had the chicken wings, calamari and shrimp scampi. The wings were a little too saucy, but okay. Calamari and the scampi were both solid. Calamari typically is a good appetizer to start with. I honestly didn't expect the shrimp scampi to be that great, but to my surprise it was very tasty. Most shrimp scampi pasta I've tried at different places tend to be too lemon-y. It's sour and unpleasing to my tongue, but Genovese's doesn't have that overpowering lemon flavor. It's very buttery and has a just enough of that lemon flavor. Add some cheese on top of the pasta and it's very good. Also the shrimp was decent sized which is a plus. The menu is simple, so it's not overwhelming. I'll be back to try other foods. The waiter JC and some of their staff was on top of everything and made sure everything was okay so service was good. read more

I've lived in or near Alhambra pretty much my entire life and had driven past Genovese's a few times but had never eaten there. To me, it's in a hidden area where I would not usually drive past unless I was going to El Sereno. It is a hidden gem! Well, it's not so hidden because it was pretty busy on a Friday night! I've been here twice. The first time was during the week at a non-peak dining time. We ordered a lasagna meal,which comes with soup or salad and garlic bread. DELICIOUS! They even split the lasagna in 2 since we we're sharing. The soup was tasty (it was a kabocha soup) and the garlic bread is amazing. I also remember they played great music that day! Spanish guitar music! We sat outside and there was a citronella candle and each table to keep the mosquitoes away. I approve because I despite mosquitoes with a passion! The outdoor seating had cute lights strung up above and it was just an adorable little spot! My second visit was Friday night as I mentioned above. We sat inside as it was chilly out. The seating areas, both inside and out, are not huge. It's quite cozy. This time we ordered a small pizza and cheese ravioli with Alfredo sauce meal. It was sooooooo good! The quality of the food is amazing. The pizza crust was nice and soft. I usually don't like crust but this was good. I also don't usually like white sauce but the ravioli with Alfredo sauce was delectable! We ordered the meal so that includes soup (or salad) and garlic bread. We had enjoyed it so much the first time, we got it again! This time, we got minestrone soup. YUM! The food seems to be made to order. The staff is friendly Don't come if you're super hungry or want your food quickly. Parking in the private lot in the back or on the street. Free parking. Definitely recommend this place! Back in 1980, I was in 7th grade at Emery Park Elementary down the street from Genovese's when it first opened. Me and buddies would always come over for pizza. I hadn't been to Genovese's in decades. Feeling nostalgic, I went for lunch. I ordered their meatball sub sandwich. The bread was just crisp enough on the outside and perfectly moist. Hugo Molina came out to talk to the customers as his daughter Anais made sure that people were taken care of. What a great encounter and warm hospitality. I HIGHLY recommend Hugo's Genovese's. Bad service. Came here for the first time, in the afternoon. Was greeted at the door by the server. Informed me the menu was posted on the window, and when ready the server would take my order. After a few minutes, I attempted to order and was asked to wait. Because, prior to getting there a customer had placed an order and needed a few minutes to get that customers order. No problem I could see the person waiting for the food. The food order was then handed to the customer who was waiting. I attempted to order, again was asked to wait and the server disappeared into the back. After a couple of minutes, the server comes to the front with a food order in hand and shouts the customer's name a few times. The customer is not in sight but emerges shortly. After the server hands the food to the customer, I attempted to order and in the back ground the phone rings. To no surprise I was asked to wait. After waiting about 20 minutes, and attempting to order, I could see the server talking on the phone and using an iPad at the same time. To my added wait, the phone call was not brief. When the server finally came out and was about to take my order. I had to inform her, I had been waiting and that phone call could of been placed on hold. She was informed, I had waited patiently with the past two orders, and each time I was told to wait. But yet, when someone calls from the convenience of their home, that call takes priority over the person who is in front of your business. The cashier responded in a condescending manner, saying she was the only person, and that she was taking a food order over the phone. So I left without ordering. Will not be coming back a second time. If you come here maybe call before arriving, it's obvious people on the phone will be given priority then ordering in person. read more

Date night with the wife, started with the fried calamari (perfectly fried, nice spice in the batter) and the Green Apple Curry Salad (Unique and divine). For entrees I had the Tuscan salad and she had the Shrimp Scampi. My salad was awesome, cannellini beans with fantastic cream sauce covered with salad and grilled shrimp. Just had the BEST PANCAKES EVER here today! Seriously, you need to get the sour cream pancakes. They're like lemon ricotta pancakes, but better. Light, airy with crispy butter edges. You get 3 pancakes which also comes with your choice of meat ( I opted for the bacon, which was cooked perfectly crispy) all for around $10, which is cheaper than Denny's/IHOP's and other local bland diners nearby (you know the ones I'm taking about) and also a million times better! Other yummy dishes I tried that the table shared were the chilaquiles, huevos rancheros and breakfast pizza. Also, the coffee and mimosas were great! Friday at 6pm and the place is empty! Been coming here for over 30 years, since I was a kid. WHAT THE HELL! What ever they've done to receipes is not good. The pizza WAS amazing. Particularly the dough. Now it is cardboard deep dish Pizza. The pasta sauce? I'm sure they buy from Trader Joe's. Salad dressings clearly not made fresh anymore. Once upon a time, I had leftovers from a great tasting pizza. Heading home, we stopped to get gas. While pumping gas, I was approached by a homeless man and decided to give him my leftovers, not realizing that it would be the last time I would ever enjoy that pizza... Not sure how many times the management has changed, but the quality of the food keeps getting worse and worse. Eventually, I think they will be defrosting pizzas straight out of the freezer section of the supermarket. If the crust is a dry and tasteless bread stick, should it even be called pizza? Good sauce and cheese are not enough to save it. Outdoor seating adds a nice atmosphere, but it's difficult to flag down the wait staff to even get some napkins. My sister and I had brunch here last Sunday after searching for pet friendly restaurants on Yelp. Dogs are allowed in the outdoor dining areas. The food was really good. I had French toast and bacon which came with a cup of fresh fruit. I guess you can't go wrong with that order. The server brought a bowl of water for our dog as well which was very thoughtful.
