This little Italian restaurant is located right near the end of Main Street in Alhambra, heading toward Pasadena. Unfortunately, there's quite a bit of construction going on in the area right now, so we had to go all the way around to get there, which was a little inconvenient. It's also located on a one-way street, so just keep that in mind. Once you get there, though, there's plenty of parking in the back. This is definitely more of a little mom-and-pop, home-style Italian spot. Nothing fancy at all. The inside is pretty small, the seating and décor are a little outdated, and I think the place could use a little updating. There's also very limited seating inside. When we first arrived, we were waiting for a table that a gentleman was getting ready to leave. Another family came in and ended up sitting there instead, which honestly wasn't a big deal to us. We didn't mind them taking it but it definitely showed just how limited the seating is. I would suggest sitting outside if you have a larger group. Inside seems better suited for couples or smaller families of maybe three or four people. As it started getting busier, our server seemed to get a little overwhelmed. She was pretty much handling everything herself, with what appeared to be only one cook working in the back. Since the other family came in after us, and a few others, you could tell she was trying to keep up with everyone. She did forget a few things after we placed our order, but considering the circumstances, I thought she did a good job. She stayed on top of things as much as she could and was very nice. Now for the food, everything we tried was good and had plenty of flavor. Their minestrone soup was delicious, and I'm not even really a big fan of minestrone! That surprised me. I also really enjoyed the pasta. They told me their Alfredo sauce was made in-house, so of course I wanted to try it, and our server was nice enough to bring me a side of it. We also had the garlic bread and calamari, and everything was good. I have to mention their iced tea too because I really liked it! Overall, this is a very homey, old-school Italian kind of place. It may not have the newest décor or a big dining room, and service can get a little stretched when they're busy, but the food was tasty and the place had that small, neighborhood Italian restaurant feel. If you're in the Alhambra area and you're looking for a good little mom-and-pop Italian spot with home-style food, this is definitely one I'd say give a try. read more

Always on the lookout for an Italian restaurant that serves more than early dinner. I used the GOOGLE standby of "Italian restaurants near me NOW". I'm originally from the east where people would eat Italian food at an Italian restaurant and pizza at a pizzeria. I've been in California longer than I had been on the east coast so I have since learned to get over myself. I ordered the beef and sausage lasagna with minestrone. The soup was good and had variations I don't usually recall seeing. They used penne as the pasta and it also included diced zucchini and potato. The tomato base was a bit on the thin side, but that was just fine as it was well seasoned. The lasagna arrived in a hot, oval shaped, ceramic dish atop a cutting board. It was covered with rich cheese. It was super hot and I was very impressed with the presentation. I received buttered garlic bread and the usual table condiments. I was also seated immediately upon arriving and was close to the cash register which also had a view of what was going on outside. It has been very hot this time of year. The place offered outdoor dining, but everyone decided it best to eat inside. When I had arrived, a young man had overheard my order and smiled while saying that he had ordered the same thing. He knew the waitress/hostess and they talked about the World Cup. He shared that his Mother was from the same village as one of the players and the conversation was warm and friendly. The place is clean. I was seated in an unusual sectional seat that appeared to be part of a booth. It looked like an old car seat from the 1960s and it has a shag-like seat cover on it. Creative retro and repurposing is a plus in my book. While I continued my meal, two women came in. One of them had been there before and she said that they would be waiting for her mother and her monther's three friends. They were celebrating a birthday. The waitress sprang to attention, gave them time to order, and showed a great deal of patience as they painfully decided and redecided what toppings they wanted for the pizza and how they wanted the toppings to be arranged. (They settled for olive and pepperoni over the entire pie). The music was Spanish langauge tunes that were familiarly vintage. Guantanamera comes to mind. I can't say for sure which country the songs were from, but the music was pleaant and the volume was appropriate. There's ample parking out back! The only negative thing I could say--to no fault of the restaurant--is that there seems to be quite a big of construction going on on Main Street. As I looked outside, I saw mounds of sand piled to mountainous heights. It attracted crows. I find the birds amusing so I have no complaints about that. It also turned out to be a good springboard for a trip to COSTCO in Alhambra. I'm not from there, but as long as I was there, I opted to go and shop and get some gas. It's nothing fancy. Prices are reasonable. They seem to have a busy take-away business. They accept credit cards with the same welcoming as cash. read more

Second time coming here and it was not busy in comparison to my first time. I decided to dine-in and enjoy my lunch in the restaurant. Got serviced immediately and was brought my water and salad pretty quickly. I had enough time to finish that right before my pasta came out. The pasta was delicious and very fulfilling, use the garlic bread to dip into some of the excess sauce. The serving was large and I had to take the rest to go. Where do I start, from 20+ years ago or just to say how wonderful the new owner is and I so much appreciate that she recognizes who we are as a whole of human beings and not just our color, bravo and thank you for treating my husband and I with so much respect. Husband and I have been coming to this restaurant since I used to work down the street 20+ years ago and I'm telling you, the food has not change at all. I ordered the meatball sandwich, excellent, hubby ordered the vodka pasta, very authentic. Sorry it was so good, I forgot to take a picture, but trust me it was so good, you will not be disappointed at all. Genovese's is our families spot. I been coming here since the early 1980's it has a new for last ten or so years it's a small and giving you still amazing pizza!! Before the pizza's couldn't fit thru the door so you turn your box's side way's But now it's wheelchair accessible with a wider door today. The largest pizza is 36 ' inch still the same sauce and topping. Today we stop for lunch and we had the lunch specials The owner is Chef Hugo and owner. Service is excellent Karina has been here forever! She amazing she runs the lunch and dinner inside and out and there's a back patio very cute and the front has tables back before the pandemic you had to wait in line for a table. But let share the love here keep it going here. Karina has know my brother for awhile now and what he like all the menu but no cheese my brother he likes it here cause it close by to his home and he's regular here. It's always clean and very fresh food The owner always comes out to ask you how it going too Air conditions is great here and cool inside too it get hot in the summer afternoons but nights are cool in the patio's. I came in not long after they opened, was sat and ordered straight away. Food came quickly, service was good. I thought my food was fine, I think I'll order a pizza on the next visit. Some room for improvement could be had on their ordering systems through apps. While dining in, I overheard 2 different parties come in with orders on an app and the restaurant reported they had not received them. The waitress and one of the cooks were trying to troubleshoot on their end, but they appeared to be struggling. I personally love the ambiance, it's quaint and simple. Really good calamari, crispy but not overcooked. Salads are generous portions as are the pizzas. Pizza crusts on the sweet side but seem homemade, toppings were fresh. Unfortunately they no longer serve alcohol, it would have been really good with a beer. Let me start off my saying Genovese's has been one of my families go to pizza spot for years. The consistency of the pizzas and pastas are always on point. The service from the lady with glasses is always amazing. The food is very affordable compared to many other "Italian" dining options near by. Cute patio space, homey and eclectic. Everything is self-serve; dinnerware is in the armoire. The waitress looks busy and overwhelmed. The sandwich looks like a deli sandwich and lacks presentation. The minestrone soup is on the acidic side; a chunk of cheese in the soup is a nice touch for flavor, but again, the presentation... it looks like a piece of floating booger. But of course, the pizzas seem to be their main thing, and they did not disappoint. I asked for thin crust and extra cheese on the margherita and quite enjoyed it. The salad was great, very fulfilling, with 10 pounds of veggies, and the prawns were nicely flavored. Good spot to sit on the patio for a relaxing lunch, like a little oasis away from the city. (And the reviews are from before the change in ownership) I've gotten takeout from here multiple times and I have been thoroughly impressed with everything I've tried. The food is reasonably priced and all is delicious. Items that I have ordered include: - Genovese's Special Pizza: We got the large and it is MASSIVE. It fed me for an additional 3-4 days. The crust itself is sweet and could easily be eaten with some nice high quality butter. I'm not usually a fan of olives and green peppers on pizza, but I didn't mind eating it on this one whatsoever. I didn't feel like the pizza was overly greasy either but felt that each ingredient was high quality. - Apple Curry Chicken Salad: MY FAVORITE SALAD. Yes you need to use both dressings. The takeout portion is HUGE and makes me so happy while eating it. I could easily eat this as my main and be satisfied. - Chicken Scallopini: the angel hair pasta helps soak up all the flavor of the sauce. I was a little disappointed from the last time I got this to go because there was not that much pasta in the dish. I ended up making some spaghetti at home to soak up the rest of the sauce, but it also didn't taste as good as the angel hair pasta. So if you need more pasta to sauce ratio -- make sure its angel hair that you boil at home. - Penne Vodka: classic and delicious. I have no notes. Delicious. - Lemoncello Cake: Not available online but you can order in person. It may be an "off the menu" item but I feel like most people know about it. this place is SOO good!! literally so happy that it's here in alhambra - if you're not careful you can totally miss it as it's a small mom & pop shop, but trust me you'll want to try it!! i'll admit, I was hesitant to try Genovese's at first because I saw it's rated 3.6 stars, but i looked into them and most of the low reviews were from years ago during COVID, which I don't think gives the current experience a fair shot. i'm really glad I gave it a chance because this place totally won me over! my favorite thing is their $50 dinner special for two--it's such a good deal at $25 per person. Each person gets an entire plate of spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, their choice of wine/beer/soft drink AND you get to share a pizza. We tried Genovese's for the first time today, because of an Instagram reel we saw. We were craving pizza and wanted to order a margharita pizza, but were told they were out of basil, at 6pm on a Friday night. So we ordered some calamari and a Genovese's special house pizza. The calamari was sub-par and the portion was meagre. The pizza took a long time to arrive, and I would give it a B rating. There was too much cheese and an uninspired crust. The service was friendly but lacking. It took several requests to get what we asked for. Being charged $1 for a small dish of pepperoncini was the final insult, that lead to this review. I'm surprised they didn't charge us for the parmesean cheese! One of the dessert options was a tiramisu, but they were also out of it. I've been coming here regularly since the change of ownership. The food has improved and you can tell they use high quality ingredients. My go to is the chicken Parm sandwich. It's so big that I order it for lunch and save the 2nd half for dinner. For dinner, I'll order the fried calamari and antipasto salad and have them bring it out at the same time. Perfect dinner! And the service is always friendly. I've been going for long enough that they put my order in as soon as they see me walking in the door. Our favorite was ambiance. There are several guest but it's not loud and overcrowded. The music was perfection fit for a date night(which my husband and I were having).
