I did voice my disappointment with the meat. It was tense. But I should have known that Mr Le J would do the right thing. He refunded half my money (that's what I asked for) and was very kind about it. The whole situation was so out of character and so I'm glad we could work things out. I'm not sure where to start. Last year I bought my own brisket and added a chicken and had him smoke and shred - the food was good. This year (2025) I ordered brisket for 12 and 2 chickens. The brisket was not shredded - it couldn't be and was all fat and gristle - inedible. The chicken was shredded but still had so many bones it was a threat to eat. The real clincher is I spent over $300 on this FOR CHRISTMAS DINNER FOR MY FAMILY. I was mortified. I will never use Le J's BBQ again. The service was good but the point is the food was inedible. Of course he is cash only and has very short hours. I'll go to Wichita before I go here again.

Going so over the top doesn't help my old barbecue standbys: the pork was on the way to becoming jerky, the brisket was dry and the fat unrendered, and even the sausage had a casing that was too thick for my liking. The ribs, on the other hand, stood up to the smoke well, producing a caramelized crust that gave way to tender meat that came off the bone cleanly. I'm not normally a ribs guy, but it was one of the saving graces of the meal. What Sweet Willy's lacks in panache it makes up for in gusto. The menu is peppered with all sorts of non-traditional applications of barbecue, from poutine to chicken lollipops to tacos, though the most surprisingly enjoyable thing may be the burnt ends, which are tossed in a honey and garlic sauce that is not only more subtle than the KC-style sauces served with everything else, but surprisingly works well with the sugars in the meat in a way that doesn't overwhelm. There's clearly a lot of effort put into Sweet Willy's, but not a lot of confidence, no matter how many "yums" are on the menu.
