Please, please don't eat here if you like sushi! I specifically signed up for a yelp account because we had such a bad experience at Genmai. First, my credentials: I took a job in Japan partly because I wanted to travel but mainly because I love sushi. I've eaten a LOT of sushi all over the US and the world and this was, by far, the worst sushi experience I have ever had. 1.) Seaweed salad- swimming in the vinegar sauce. There was about 1/4 cup of liquid at the bottom of the bowl. Each bite had to be allowed to drip before we could eat it. 2.) Miso soup- very bland and the tofu was really mushy. 3.) Sushi- we ordered the Cilantro #2 and one other roll. Both were liberally doused in different sauces. The fish itself was not bad, but as coated in excess sauce as it was, you couldn't taste it. The truly terrible part of both rolls was the rice. Sushi rice should be firm, without being grainy, should be lightly flavored with rice vinegar, and the individual grains should feel distinct in your mouth. Genmai's rice was tasteless and mushy. The only positive comment I can make about this experience is that the wait staff were friendly. read more

Brown rice sushi, something I recently found existed in Los Angeles, and now been craving it ever since. "Who cares" you say? Well the benefit to brown rice over white rice is less carbs, more fiber, & slightly more protein. Not easy to find in Ventura County so far. Didn't realize there was a sushi bar right in my backyard whose name literally means that very thing! Genmai (hard G) means brown rice in Japanese. Cool, lets see wotcha got. Checked yelp and gotta admit, I was a little skeptical with all these yelpers getting sick, but I just earned my "Maverick Badge" so I had to prove worthy of it. First thing you'll notice is that the only thing Asian is the food (and me that day). First time seeing an all Hispanic staff, including the sushi bar. In Oxnard, we're breaking barriers here! Really doesn't matter who's behind the counter, as long as I don't get sick and the food is delicious. Nice decor. Friendly servers. Clean environment. Most of the "Brand New Rolls" list & half of the "Baked Roll" list are over $10.00. Two options for soy sauce there: regular vs. low sodium. I wanted something with a little kick to it so opted for the Magic Roll - inside: spicy shrimp & crab, cucumber, shrimp tempura & outside: brown rice, decent cut of fresh tuna, avocado, masago, spicy mayo. 9 pieces to the order, not so spicy by itself but there was a good taste to it. The wasabi was a little weak in spirit. I put the whole gob of wasabi provided in my soy sauce but it didn't add much "umpf." I was definitely expecting more spiciness than what I tasted, but no rumbly in the tummy after . Decent place for those starting to explore the sushi realm. read more

Awesome unique sushi. I can't say enough about this friendly and clean environment. The staff and the food is soo great. My husband and I go weekly. This is how much we loooove it. No it's not absolute authentic sushi, but it's the best at being different with its nontraditional menu of sushi with a Mexican twist. The items we looove best are cilantro roll (yes cilantro roll. It's so flavorful!!) port hueneme roll, rock n roll, jalapeño yellowtail sashimi (it's just as good as nobu's. just half the price!), and spicy edamame (if you like spicy, you will love this!). Also, if you have something you'd like that's not on the menu, just describe it and they will make it. So great! They also have the best happy hour. $2 beer and half off appetizers. Everyday there's something going on. I can't say enough about this wonderful place. read more

Great sushi and service! Our server recommended good rolls and the food came fast. I was in love with their garlic edamame.

Sorry guys, you just need to do better. We came 35 minutes before you closed, so I will give you that. However, we weren't greeted and I had to ask someone where we could sit. There were like 7 people working! So the guy told us we could sit anywhere. My boyfriend asked to make sure you were still serving since you were closing and clearly didn't want to work anymore. So one of the workers asked a young boy working, "when do you close?" ... Uhmmmm don't you work here guy? Of course the boy didn't give a shit and didn't answer him so that was great. So, we finally sat down where we wanted, no menus no nothin. The CUSTOMER sitting next to us brought us a menu. How embarrassing, so I said very loudly "she we tip you instead!??" Anyway, after that amazing start the service finally got better. The rolls tasted good, miso was 'ok.' I'll only come back here if my boyfriend wants to, he seems to like it. read more

Alberto and Felipe are the two owners here and both really good guys. I haven't had the opportunity to speak to Felipe in detail but Alberto has a classic story, working for years at a local sushi restaurant before saving up enough money to start his own business. Add a hint of Mexican flare to the menu with great service and the rest is history. Also, after a long and grueling permit and licensing process, Genmai now boasts a decent sized bar to go along with its unique rolls and warm atmosphere, complete with live music and karaoke nights. If you own a business you can even sponsor a roll here, which will show on one of their TV menus, along with your business ad. Genmai completes my "great place" checklist by adding community support to its list of business priorities, helping to support a variety of programs benefiting thousand of youth throughout Oxnard. Meals: Had the chicken curry lunch special yesterday (11/19/14) and really liked it. For $8.50 it was a good amount of chicken and included white rice and salad. I ordered the cucumber salad as an appetizer was delicious, the Spicy Tuna Roll was the right of spicy and the Shrimp Tempura was perfect!! The reason why I gave it 3 stars instead of 4, was the restrooms. The Mens restroom had at stench smell and the graffiti on the walls.. read more

I would love to write a length, positive review about this establishment, but I, unfortunately, was not given the opportunity to indulge in the fine alcohol or expertly crafted sushi rolls that others have raved about. After spending approximately 10 minutes observing two employees argue about which of the numerous open tables they were going to seat us we were finally seated. 5 minutes after we were seated, we were given our menus. It was to my dismay to see that the group seated 10 minutes after us had not only had their drink orders taken, but were being served them all before a waiter had even passed a glance at my table. Needless to say, we decided to leave after about 30 minutes of not even being acknowledged by the staff. The one star the Yelp app forces me to give pains me because I wouldn't give this establishment that high of a rating. I will not be going back...EVER. read more

Oh, Genmai, thats some real bad food you got there. Who puts noodles in miso soup? Not to mention that it was bland but the teriyaki beef was too. No thanks. read more

Ate here for the first and last time. What: ordered a chicken katsu lunch combo with a shrimp tempura roll. Pros: -food was cheap Cons: service was lacking. Didnt check up on us after we got our food. Was also annoyed they didnt give us a dish for wasabi/soy sauce Chicken katsu was bland. The sauce was extremely salty. Sushi rice was extremely mushy Miso soup was powdery Bottom line: i cant recommend this place. The food here is mediocre at best. this place is okay if you are looking for a cheap eat. But i think i would much rather drive a little further and pay a little more to eat at ozeki, sumo, or one of the other dozen good sushi places in ventura county. read more

First time here.... I ordered a Teriyaki Chicken plate and a Salmon Teriyaki Combination plate to go. For both plates it cost just a smidge over $24. I paid cash ($40) and was shorted $10. I didn't put my change of $6 away nor did I open my wallet back up. I held the $6 up so the guy could see it and me in plain view. He finally looked and I said, "Uh..." He said, "Oh yeah. You gave me two $20's" then gave me the missing $10. It seemed a little jinky but, okay. It could have been an honest mistake. I'll give it to him. Was it worth it? I don't think so. The salmon was good, but on the small side for what it cost. The salad was just...a salad and the sushi was okay. It didn't come with wasabi or any ginger. Again, nothing spectacular for what it cost. Oh... And in my salad I had a little surprise of a little piece of black plastic that I bit into. Luckily, I didn't break or chip a tooth. Small potion of salmon... No wasabi or ginger with the sushi... Small plastic piece in the salad... Did I mention it took 30 minutes before I got my food??? Will I go back...??? Now that's questionable.... Two stars because 1) the food was tasty - minus the plastic piece and 2) my kids went there earlier and really liked it. read more

OK it's not your typical sushi bar, they have more Hispanic then Asain working there, but who care who works there as long as the food is good. They have some great dishes and sushi. The best spicy yellowtail, made fresh for each order. White Tuna is hard to find and theirs is always fresh. A good selection of different rolls. I've had lunch there numerous times and have never been disappointed. Javier the owner is a real nice guy, who rally cares about your experience at his restaurant. Try this sushi bar you won't be disappointed. Tell Javier you wants Mark's special roll. It is the biggest and baddest roll you have ever experience. read more

I used to love coming here but I will NEVER return and I highly suggest neither do you! I placed an online order this evening and after waiting 30mins to pick it up; they said it'd be 15-20mins, the staff said they never put in the order. Then I waited out in my car for another 35 mins only to be told they LOST my order. When I finally received my food 30 mins later, it was the wrong order AND there were several mustache hairs with the roots attached ALL OVER MY SUSHI! Ever since covid their business has been terrible and this is the final straw! DO NOT EAT HERE!!!! read more

This place is a nice place to sit and have sushi (especially at the bar) and you get a large portion of Sushi for a low price. 13 pieces in a roll for $8. Not too bad! I think their fried Gyoza are good but the steamed ones are soggy. Their fried rice was kind of strange though. Big chunks of steamed rice mixed into it, lots of fresh ground black pepper and veggies like zucchini mixed in, tasted okay but I can make better at home. Overall it's got some good qualities - like the sushi bar is nice since they make things and let you try for free. Nice. Most people inside are Mexican and speaking Spanish really loud ( the workers) kinda rowdy, not too professional. I dunno seemed like a gangster kinda hangout to me. read more

This review is for lunch only I've been stopping by around lunch time to "test the waters" and now find myself stopping by even more. The first time I visited the place, I left before ordering due to a weird vibe from the sushi bar. Told a friend about the experience and he said to give it another try (he's a regular there). Repeat visits have been very good with the fish served cold, fresh, and tasty; the nori fresh with a crisp bite. The chefs now know me and are quite friendly and very talkative. The waitress even knows my standard fare as I stick to the simple sushi orders here. Brought a female over for lunch and she was impressed. (She is a regular at Anaba Sushi). I've never had a wait, or slow service, but I always sit at the bar and I don't get that feeling that these folks are pretending to be Japanese like some of the other places in town. This is a nice place for a quick lunch to satisfy my raw fish fix. read more

Nice mellow atmosphere for a late lunch with my husbabd. Tried the Sashimi martini and the spicy edamame. They were awesome! If you're a fan of Mexican Shrimp Cocktail, then you'll enjoy the Sashimi martini. My two new favorite dishes. I will definitely be a frequent a customer. read more

Nice enviroment, was able to watch the Olympics on a big screen, fun relevant decore. Food not so much :/ Sushi was ok, teriyaki steak had a horrible smell to it, only ate the rice and salad. Service was Slowwwww, order came wrong & had to be corrected (despite the delay). On a positive note, the server Hector was very nice. read more

Ok, so first of all I'm usually always ok with their rolls so I hate to have to rate 3 stars but I decided to have lunch here today since it's close to my work place. I accidentally ordered this braised shrimp rice thinking I was ordering shrimp fried rice ( I know my mistake) but honestly WTF is this? C'mon $13 for literally 3 shrimp that have been cut down the middle to create the visual effect of 6 + plus this is not braided shrimp. The shrimp was clearly pre-cooked bagged shrimp that was never braised ( was still cold) just tossed straight out of the bag and topped with teriyaki sauce. The vegetables very bland absolutely no seasoning or salt @ all. By far the worst meal ever. I can't believe someone would even put such a dish in their menu. Definitely not restaurant quality, Rant is over.... read more

They made my sushi the first time I went there without seaweed just as I had ordered. It was delicious. The second time I went there I forgot to order it without seaweed. One of my favorite places to get sushi. I've been coming her for years and it just never gets old. The place has done a lot of changing since I've first came in and it's only gotten better. The owner is a super nice and friendly extrovert who actually comes out and interacts with his guest. He even gave us a roll on the house once. The waiters are the same people who have been serving the restaurant's guest since I was 14 years old! The food here is super good too! My favorites are the magic and mommy rolls. This place is a little price but well worth it. Not only is the food great but the ambience is too. Every time my dad is in town, we always head out here. Family tradition or his favorite place to eat? Who knows but I love this place. It's amazing! read more

I haven't been to Genmai in a few years and thought to give it another chance. I was wrong. This still is the worst place to get sushi. Don't get me wrong, the server really tried, but everything in general was not good. The food was not fresh (we ordered a variety of things- rolls, chicken teriyaki, sushi and gyoza) and the miso soup did not taste right. The sound level of the music/tv was way too loud, we couldn't have a conversation. At the end, the server had issues with our receipt, which I could not see very well because the restaurant was too dark. This place is overpriced too. Save your time and money and go elsewhere. read more

We ordered off Grubhub. Food wasn't labeled. Ordered about 6 rolls and a veggie teriyaki bowl. Our fried tempura roll tasted like it was made in old oil. Each roll had no flavor. The wasabi looked like it was squeezed out of a toothpaste tube. Avocado looked like it was sitting out for an our. It was brown. The teriyaki bowl was smothered in sauce. Not even sure it was teriyaki sauce. Spent $90 on food that ended up in the trash. Never again. read more

Worst experience I have ever had at a sushi restaurant. I ordered the sashimi salad which was ok. We ordered the super lobster roll which took a little longer than we expected and once we received it I noticed it had a hair. As soon as the guy handed it to me I noticed it. I told our waitress and she took it back to the chef. They began to laugh very loud about the situation. I never got an apology. All they said was they would make a new one. What made us upset was the fact that they laughed and that they kept talking about it while I was right in front of them. Worst customer service ever. The food is not even that great for what we paid for. Never ever coming here again. read more

This place is great!!! My husband and I stumbled upon it and we love it. They always remember us, the service is great. They also offer a 15% discount for military which is amazing! They are a bit pricey, but the food is outstanding, the rolls are big, and the fish is really fresh!!!! Not sure about why it matters that the place is operated by a Hispanic family, as it says in the reviews below. The food is great, the service is excellent.
