Service was good. The servers and line cooks were very kind! Downside is that every single high chair is broken, so if you have a travel booster seat, make sure to bring it with you. Personally, I'd skip the fried rice option. Noodles definitely tastes better. The medium create your own comes with two choice sides and sticking to noodles, white rice, or cabbage is going to be our way to go in the future. Brown rice was another option, but I'd rather choose cabbage than subject myself to deconstructed fake rice. There were tons of great proteins and a dozen different sauce options at the end. One of the kids chose to go with a bbq theme with chicken, pork, and steak. Another went middle of the road with some standard Asian flavors and a tiny bit of heat. I went full surf & turf with tons of delicious toppings and the spiciest sauces on the bar. Solid heat level, akin to a medium heat in a Thai restaurant. In summary, we downloaded the rewards app and plan to go back. The elementary school kid will definitely do a kids meal size next time. The middle schooler will stick with the small size CYO. I have always liked this restaurant. It was way better when it first opened years ago but on our last visit, my husband and I both like our food and the service was great. We both got the flavored tea and it was also pretty good. I have never been good at picking what to put in my bowl but there were lots of options that all looked good, so I chose carefully and also only did one non-spicy sauce. Most of their menu is ready made "bowls" - the small starting at $10.99 but the waitress told us it was more like a kid size and an adult portion is the "regular" which starts around $13. They still have the build your own (like traditional Mongolian BBQ) but at a slightly higher price. We didn't check that out but maybe should have. They probably stopped the build your own because people were adding too many ingredients costing the business more. Portions small and taste mediocre. Service attentive- nothing wrong there. Place looks shabby. Music WAY too loud. All we go were the regular sized bowls and water - for 3 of us. For the price we paid plus tip, we could have gone to better tasting Panda Express for less $ and larger portions, or our favorite mom and pop Thai restaurant with appetizer and drink plus entrees for the 3 of us. Since we were waiting for over an hour for our meal, I kept observing the staff and none of them cared to speed things up or work with a sense of urgency. Mind you the place was getting busy but the staff was not helping pick up the speed to cater to the big crowd coming in. I noticed lots of people walk out due to the wait. Also, it was a bit pricey for the small portion of meat and veggies you are able to fit in the little bowls. I got a medium and the medium looked like a small, I can't even imagine the actual size of the small one. The actual restaurant needs a little TLC, it is outdated and worn out. **UPDATE** The owner, Jeff Macaitis, looked me up on facebook like a stalker and sent me a message accusing me of lying on my review here and said that he was not walking around counting money, that the floors were not sticky, and that they do not charge extra for all of the things that the server told me they charge extra for. He called me a liar and told me he has reported me to Google. Rather than offer to make things right and offer to fix what is obviously horribly wrong with his restaurant, he has doubled down and resorted to insulting me and calling me a liar. I tried to be polite and objective with my review but since he stalked me on facebook, I have attached screenshots of the conversation to this review. Enjoy! Genghis Grill used to be a fun place to go to have a buffet style Mongolian grill experience, with a couple trips through the line to experiment with multiple ingredients and sauces, a fun family atmosphere, and reasonable pricing. The staff also used to be friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, since our last visit a couple years ago, this location has gone WAY downhill. We arrived about 1215 on a Friday afternoon hoping we wouldn't get caught in a lunch rush, but the only other patron in the store was a delivery driver waiting on his pickup order. The seats and benches are worn down and falling apart. The first thing I noticed, actually, was that no matter where I stopped, my feet were sticking to the floor. It was disgusting, and felt like it hadn't been mopped since I had been there two years ago. I was disappointed to find out that gone are the multiple trips to the grill, instead you are encouraged to order menu style from a confusing and long list of both Asian and American quasi-stir fry-ish sounding dishes. You can still go through the buffet to select your ingredients, but the prices are about triple what they previously were for a bowl about the size I might feed to my 2 year old. They also now charge extra for EVERYTHING. You want an egg? Extra. You want rice and noodles? Extra. You want two sauces? Extra. Hell, my soft drink was almost four dollars and the server never came back to check on us so there were no refills, so that was a four dollar cup of coke. The grill cooks were friendly, and cooked our food well and answered our questions. But we were the only two customers in line and still one of our bowls came out about 5 minutes after the first one, which I didn't understand. There was a guy there who appeared to be a manager, who seemed more concerned with counting cash out of the bar till and itemizing cups and bowls than making sure his floors were clean, the buffet was stocked, and customers were taken care of. Overall, a very, very disappointing experience. We both agreed that for $20 each, we could have gone and had a sit down dinner somewhere much cleaner and quieter for more food. Or we could have gone to our local Chinese buffet for about $8 each for lunch and still gotten a stir fry for the same experience, and that comes with a free drink. Definitely will not be back again, sad because this used to be an occasional favorite of ours, but it has gone way, way downhill. It's no surprise that in a busy shopping center at noon it was a (sticky) ghost town. read more

I was very disappointed this last time I went. The self-serve area was a mess. Food everywhere, veggies looked freezer burnt, the stainless steel trays had ice built on them that made it appear As if they hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. We went here for a Sunday Lunch. We chose the medium size 'make it yourself' bowl with Fried Rice. While waiting for the food to cook on the grill we went to wash our hands. There were no paper towels in the bathrooms so the waitress gave us some small paper napkins. I ordered a Coke to drink and it was very Flat tasting. Once the food arrived the rice tasted terrible and was extremely mushy almost like oatmeal. It wasn't very crowded and while our waitress was nice, she wasn't around to service our requests (other than to take our order and drop off the receipt). Food was actually good. First time trying this place. Being from the southeast strawberry margarita tastes like strawberries however the ones here tasted like salt ( I didn't get salt on the rim). Overall, if you're wanting something quick and tasty give it a try. I want to start out by saying I hate giving bad reviews so I'll start with the positive. The food that I made was really good. That being said.....when you walk into the restaurant the floors are sticky and tacky. The table was dirty even though someone had already cleaned it. There were three tables in the entire restaurant and probably 6 employees however the buffet looked like no one had cleaned it in days, food everywhere,on the floor on the counter in wrong dishes. Cross contamination.....I was bound and determined to eat Mongolian BBQ so we powered through. To have them deliver the wrong dish to my wife. Finally we sat down to eat even though the fruit flys were abundant. Lisa's food finally got delivered 15 minutes after mine. When I was done I went to wash my hands in the men's bathroom but walked by the opened women's bathroom obviously having some sort of plumbing issues. Onward to men's bathroom as soon as I opened the door a roach ran under the stall. I'm very sad and hope the management/owner reads this and does something about it. However don't expect anything with today world and environment. I hated to leave this review and I am a fan of Genghis Grill. In the mangers defense he did take 5 dollars of Lisa's bowl. I don't know how this GG has a better rating than the one in the Forum.. The service was almost non existent and the food buffet where we were supposed to fill our bowls was disgusting. We arrived at a slow time of the day (2:30pm) and instead of cleaning the restaurant, the employees were congregated out of sight and could be heard laughing and joking while we waited to have our bowls given to us. We quickly gave up the wait due to the gross condition of the countertops by the food. Our second time to GG and believe it or not you guys are out of fried rice. I would understand if the doors were closing in 15 minutes however you are open for 2 more hours. It wasn't bad enough that tables were seated after us were served ahead of us, but no fried rice!! If it wasn't for the fact that they brought my wife's out first, with fried rice, we would have left. Was just told they would make some more, lovely. There are way too many places to eat in San Antonio so you need to get more servers and have better management of your food supplies or you're not going to make it. read more

Under new management. One of my favorite restaurants in the area. They have a great selection of ingredients, sauces, desserts, and a full bar. Sports on the TVs. Clean area. Attentive staff. And the new owner, Jeff, stopped by each table to check on the customers' experiences. Very nice guy. I really am rooting for this place to do well! It's a bit of a hidden gem, as their location is on the back side of the building from the 1604 access road (by Main Event). Do yourself a favor, and give them a try! You'll love it!! read more

When I went, I was seated immediately and asked what I wanted. The server was very kind, funny and answered all the questions I needed answered. She was quick to refill our drinks as soon as they got low and even follow our instructions on how we wanted the drinks. They had many ingredients to choose from and it was very organized. They have stickers to show you what is what and if it's a vegetarian, gluten free, or spicy option. The cook was very funny and did a great job handling our food and answering questions as well. The restaurant was very clean and comfortable. They had tvs in select areas, booths or chaired tables, and even had Christmas lights hung up for the holiday. I gave it a 4 star review because I was a little upset that the business changed their prices and menus. They seem to be wanting to stray away from their original roots of being a Mongolian BBQ stir fry restaurant. Overall, everything was great but that one thing is what stops me from making this a perfect star review. There is also a help wanted sign in the window so if you go when it is very busy you might have slower service and if you need a job then go apply! read more

The Groupon was a great deal because we got two bowls and two drinks for a great price of 11 dollars. Was excited to check the place out. What a great concept. Pick you own fresh ingredients and they make it into a stir fry for you right before your eyes. The taste of the food was decent. Chose different proteins like chicken and pork. Various veggies and they had them done up with noodles. Two out of the three of us likely got food poisoning The bathrooms were the nastiest I have ever seen ever. The health department should do an inspection on this place. Floors were sticky and gross. Tables were nasty. Bathrooms were falling apart and I noticed that no one ever cleaned the grill the whole time we were there. Do yourself a favour. My Bestie and I stopped into Genghis Grill a few weeks ago after a long Saturday of " Girl Talk". I wanted Sushi and she fibbed to me stating that they were a feature here on the menu. This location was closer to the 281 and 1604 Junction and was rather empty for a Saturday. We were greeted by a "Five" Star waiter who was informative and attentive and then the stars started shifting to the left from there. The Restaurant *3 Stars* The restaurant was roomy and since it was a cold day out, it was empty inside so we easily found a booth to slip into. The air was so thick inside I could barely breathe. While we weren't directly next to the grill, the smoke inside was so thick we could have been eating inside a teepee with Indians. My eyes were burning and the smokiness was sticking inside my nostrils. I'm not sure if the vent was broke or if this was how the restaurant normally smelled, but it was uncomfortable and not a pleasant dining experience. Our utensils were a little dirty and our waiter gladly switched them out. The Food *2 Stars* Since Sushi was obviously not on the menu, my waiter explained the bowl options to us and said that whatever we crammed in, would be cooked on the grill. We ordered some delicious fruit infused lemonade and made our way over to the "Smoke Pit". The food area had several veggie options, seafood options and chicken that would eventually be covered in aromatic spices and a different blend of sauces that would take your dish in many directions from Savory to Sweet. I decided on a sweet BBQ and Teriyaki glaze to cover Udon noodles, broccoli, shrimp and chicken. I passed my bowl to the gentleman near the grill and sat back down while it was being prepared. The smoke was unbearable and every time I turned my head, a smokiness drifted about (Dreadlocs were filled with smoke...yuck). Our food came to the table and my bowl looked greasy... I'm not sure how much oil the young man used, but the noodles were slipping off my fork. The broccoli was singed and charred and the entire bowl had a burnt aroma and I should have sent it back, but I have a thing about sending food back to Restaurants these days... After a few bites... that meal was destined for the trash receptacle so I patiently waited for my girl to finish her food. We paid our tab and I actually savored walking back into the brisk cold to cleanse my nostrils. We headed home and I could only think of a nice warm shower to erase the smoke perfume I now carried. Midway into my trip home, my tummy started feeling queasy and I wondered if the grease had been too much for my predominantly no grease diet. I had to have my friend pull over as nausea swept over me. *I'll just say the bathroom trip was better on my body, than the trip to the restaurant* Can't say that I don't recommend as my Girl said she loved the place. I guess if you like Smoke, thin air, Grease and Charred food, this might be the place for you...
