Although this place has an incredible happy hour and fairly flavorful food, I can't get passed how poor the service was. We went at 4 50 on a Thursday and felt constantly overlooked and dismissed. The 3 dollar HH buns were fantastic and the half off wings delish. The spam fried rice and noodles were far too salty but have potential. The lemonades are 5 dollars ans mostly rice. Cornbread was very good. I dunno if I'd go back except for the pork belly bun.

This was our first time at the new location. Of course the decorations were on point. It's always been so aesthetically pleasing. I came for the spam fried rice and it's been years since I had it last but it was just as good as I remembered it! My friend had the crab Rangoon and she liked it. She also had the garlic noodles which I didn't get a photo of but she loved them and she doesn't eat meat and liked the tofu bun. The pain killer drink is delish. Most of what we got was happy hour priced it's from 3pm-6pm. Service was great, going back again soon:)

First time at this location but unfortunately felt a bit lack luster. The place is absolutely stunning and I can't imagine at night how cool it is. The service was just a bit slow for our liking.. our drinks sat at the bar for a long time to the point where it tasted like ice melted making it watery.( our food came first before our drinks..??) - Then without refills for a pretty long time until we decided we just wanted to leave and would rather have our water. Spam fried rice was good and a big portion! The sesame chicken was good just nothing spectacular. I'd come back if I was in the area but I wouldn't come out of my way for it unfortunately

The best way to go to Hot Joy is for happy hour with a group of friends. If I was rating the happy hour alone it would be 5 stars. The $6 frozens and some other drinks are very well priced during happy hour. My favorite part is the happy hour $1 large egg rolls that come with a delicious sauce and $3 pork belly buns. This is one of my favorite happy hours in all of San Antonio. My friends and I will usually also get a few main menu items to share family style. The service is good, and the staff seem to help each other out to make sure all tables are taken care of and that everything comes out quickly. The menu changes every quarter, with a few classics like the all American sesame chicken and green beans that stick around so you can always find something. However, I feel like the food menu still feels a bit small and limited. Everything about this place is definitely very picturesque. I love their wall art, decor, dishes, cocktail presentation, and small details of how everything looks. The parking lot behind the building is always full, but I've always been able to quickly find a spot on the streets directly nearby. Do NOT sit outside. The outdoor seating area is bad. The outdoor furniture is uncomfortable and dirty, and seems very cheap compared to the rest of the restaurant. The plants are overgrown and in the way of the outdoor seating. The music outdoors was also way too loud and kind of inappropriate. One song was swearing every other word which is just too much.

I got the wings and they were good , but I did not taste the lemon pepper at all . I would ask for more of the sauce they put on them so you can dip your chicken so it has more flavor . The restaurant is very cute for pictures but the menu is very small . I paid $16 for 5 average sized wings . The service was attentive.

We unintentionally came down here for The lunar new year and the parking situation was a little rough. But we thoroughly enjoyed the walnut shrimp and Rangoon dip. Was my second time here and the staff always has good recs. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu. It's a little dark and a higher noise level in a smaller space so just giving that heads up!

Definitely an upgrade from the other location that they used to have they put a lot of thought on the ambiance of the place. Food is family style good for sharing.

Food was delicious. Server checked constantly if we were okay. The ambiance was great loved the theme of it all!

Wow ok everything here was so yummy. I cannot get over the green beans. That could have literally been my whole meal. Thankfully the table ordered other items / all were delicious. The shrimp, the pork belly, the egg rolls and crab Rangoon dip were all great. Next time I want to try a noodle dish. Also highly recommend the Monkey Fried Rice (it's a cocktail, and it was amazing).

The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and very welcoming. The hostess at the front was a little slow seating my friend and I, she saw us but bused a table before greeting us and taking us to a table. We were happy to see that we made it in time for happy hour and happy to see that we also made it in time to take advantage of lunch specials. Our server was friendly and offered suggestions for drinks and my friend's food allergies. I got brisket and broccoli with hot and sour soup. The soup was very good. The brisket and broccoli wasn't quite what I expected, it was smoky and in a slightly sweet sauce but it was good and it was tasty reheated the next day . We also got and order of wings and they were nicer and crispy and flavorful. Our happy hour drinks were good enough to make us considering returning for happy hour.

Dinner was delicious and our server, entertaining. As soon as we told him we were from out of town he proceeded to tell us everything about the area and why dining with them was one of our best choices. They are located in one of the most entertaining areas in San Antonio, River Walk. The entrance to the restaurant is off of the main road, down the alley. It's well lit and inviting. Feels like you're entering through a speak-easy entrance. The food is great and so are the drinks. Great place to go with company or by yourself for lunch. You have to try their wings, so, so good and satisfying. We sat near the kitchen so seeing the chef in action was amusing in and of itself.

This place has always been wonderful. The food is always great. I've yet to have a bad meal or bad customer service. Every meal I've had has been incredible and the ambiance is great too. Their new location is very spacious and artsy.

So many dishes that I enjoy here. They need to bring back the brisket fried rice and keep it on the menu though!!! I loved it so much. Loved hot joy and their twice fried wings! Great flavor on those wings and super crunchy and juicy!!! I also really enjoy their decorations. It feels welcoming and very on brand. The service is nice and attentive.

I'm glad they had room for us but, it's still safe to make reservations. We did not know they are a tapas style restaurant, but that didn't deter us. Dumplings - 9/10 Gulf Shrimp & Noodles - 10/10 Blistered Green Beans - 10/10 Ramen - 9/10 Service was great. It's a casual atmosphere, but perfect for an intimate date night.

Light dish. Tc double cheese burger: very strong flavors, somewhat sweet. Dense/heavy dish . Our waiter was quick and friendly. The restaurant lighting was dimmed and gave a more intimate /bar environment. I think the ac was broken here because it was very warm and they had fans going on around the room. I think this place would be good for someone who is prefers an American fusion cuisine that leans heavily on the western style dishes. The fusion elements were cute but I still left unsatisfied but still full. We did not park. We walked here right from the river walk. Not a bad place to go if you arrive in town after 9 pm.

You go way to the back and down a steep flight of stairs. My son, his wife, and I left my wife and grandbaby in the saloon and headed down. When you get down there, you are suddenly in a beautiful Tiki bar with so many amazing things to gawk at. It sort of felt like waking up in OZ. We were the first people there, so we got to sit at the bar and watch our drinks being made. They have about 15 or so different specialty tiki drinks. Each one comes in a particular piece of glassware. I don't know how the bartender keeps them straight. He was constantly pouring different things into a shaker. Then he would shake it and pour it into the glass that was already filled with crushed ice. One of the drinks even had a smoking cinnamon stick. My drink was really good. It was the Three Dots and a Dash. It came in a barrel and was decorated with a skull toothpick that had three cherries and a piece of pineapple to represent the dots and dash. It was super strong! I was ready to risk it all and go for another drink, but it had gotten packed inside the bar. We could tell the bartender was stressing. They really need two for times like that. My wife spends the night at my son's house in New Braunfels every Thursday to give them a date night. Evidently, this is where they always go. I can certainly see why!

Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)

They came with a few spicy pickled veggies as a side. The limonada was as expected . I highly recommend a fried quails legs. We enjoy eating quails, but it's usually bittersweet relationship because of all the small bones however their appetizer for fried quail legs is super user-friendly. If you are scared of choking on small bones, these will not give you that kind of worry at all. We were impressed on how well-made and easily eaten they were.
