Hawaiian burger and seasoned fries.
Richard M.

I recommend this little spot in downtown. The burgers are good and the service was friendly and attentive. Order at the bar then find a seat. There are a few inside tables and a ton more outside. I had the Hawaiian, it comes with a really good smashed patty, spam and pineapple slice with a sweet teriyaki sauce. It was like Pulp Fiction: that is a good burger! Fries were freshly made and well seasoned. I'd come back.

I had a feeling I was going to like this place, but I LOVED it! I was waiting to go on the First Friday to watch that particular band and they didn't disappoint. It was a little chilly but the heaters were on and amazing! I got happy hour snacks, corn dogs and queso which were so good! Can't wait to take my visitors here!

Yay, i finally made my way to Smash'd! i've been wanting to come here for quite awhile and im glad i finally did. The bartenders Leah & Jewel are amazing, attentive and so sweet! My boyfriend and I got the shot of the day "dirty pear" it was delicious! The food is to die for, we loved the seasoned fries and tots! Great music, it all the vibes. I recommend friends :)

Super cool atmosphere w great burgers. Don't get the chicken sandwiches as they aren't what a Texan expects. They taste like a meat alternative and they have coleslaw instead of lettuce. The fried pickles are spears and crispy...very good. A huge outdoor patio and self-pour beer wall are the highlight. This would be a great place for a bday party or end of year celebration. Lots of open space for getting loud and enjoying great music/tv.

The food was fantastic. The service was phenomenal. Very attentive. We were watching football games at the same time. The ambience was lively. I will definitely be going back here on Sundays.!!

Large party, ordering was kind of chaotic. We order two soft drinks and got charged for four. Had a variety of foods burgers, chicken and burrito. Diablo chicken was really yummy. And the loaded fries delicious. The fries have a slightly sweet sugar coating. Made them really interesting. The carne asada burrito was big, as was the California burrito. The burgers were juicy and tasty.

We came here after my daughter's graduation and they had no problem accommodating our party of 25. August was great with taking our orders, making recommendations, and checking on us. They have everything from HUGE, delicious burgers to chicken wings, and kids meals. Everyone left satisfied. By the way, they have a full bar and extensive beer menu. They even sell beer by the ounce so you can sample.

First time here and was not disappointed. We sat outside which was calm and not terribly busy. We dealt with flies and then found out after we were done that they have those table top spinning things that deter flies so we will use that next time. Service was quick and friendly. We got smash burgers of course which were great. We heard a few people mention the wings and my wife said a guy was slurping on the sauce from his so I went and ordered some with the hot honey glaze and the spice buffalo. The wings were great. Cooked just right and the sauces were awesome. Can't wait to return.

One of my favorite local spots! I'm absolutely obsessed with their California burrito -- it's the only thing I order, and it never disappoints. The live music and great ambiance make it a perfect place to hang out. Service is always excellent. While I'm not the biggest fan of some other menu items, that burrito keeps me coming back. Definitely recommend! It would be nice if they had some games perhaps board games and/ or cornhole.

Love the outdoor space! Shade and misters to keep you cool, beautiful place to hang out with friends. Tonight we tried a smash burger and the poblano chicken which were both fantastic. Friendliness is not their strong suit but it didn't take long for the food to arrive.

Delicious! We went and it happened to be happy hour which is daily 5 til 7 pm. The apps are half off and $2 off cocktails. The smash's burgers are very unique and great, with a side of seasoned fries. Made with Texas Wagyu beef. They had chicken sandwiches also that I'll try next time. We sat indoors but they have a big outdoor seating area that seemed nice also. Pretty plants around the property. Street parking was available, not sure if they had a parking lot! Highly recommend.

Super cute place. Lots of outdoor seating and bonus! A stray kitty showed up, begging for leftovers. He was handsome and kind. We got the asada fries, based on the cashier's advice. Not a bad choice. They had a very lime-y taste. I think it was the fries themselves, hubby said it was the avocado. My husband got the plain jane burger... mustard, homemade pickles, cheese and a sauce, also based on the cashier's advice (against the Philly). For me, the burger was too plain. There was one w a hash brown patty and a fried egg and another with grilled pineapple, so many choices, but the hubby isn't very adventurous. The buns were yummy. Only three stars bc I wasn't in love with his burger. I'd go back for another burger tho, and probably would increase my rating.

Smash'd burger, fries, draft.

I was there early so not too many people. Ambiance was good, not too loud or anything. I also got a Mango Chamoy Slushie which was very good, best I ever had. Actually haven't had one before then. They serve a variety of burgers, sandwiches, wings, dogs, desserts, and meals include either a side of tots, fries, cucumbers with chamoy and lucas, or corn in a cup. Other sides are available as well. This trip since we craved for burgers, ordered: Bistro burger- wonderfully seasoned and cooked, served on sourdough, with avocado, grilled onions and mushrooms, mayo. One thing that should be added, the works, I felt it would be even better with the addition of lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes. I ordered the cucumbers sans chamoy and lucas. I appreciate simple veggies. Mexican burger- excellent! Juicy burger with cheese, jalapenos, pico de gallo, bacon and the works. The tater tots had a nice and crispy outer texture as it should. Overall- very good. Tasty, reasonable, clean, and great service. We'll have to make sure to come back sooner!

The food was not the best especially for the price. The drinks on other hand were amazing. My server Marah toke great care of me. Attentive, funny, and well knowledgeable. Would come back for the drinks and her service. The food on other hand definitely could use some help.

Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)

It's been a few years since I've been by; so, I was truly looking forward to getting something. I chose The Brat & tots (plain). I was very happy with my choice. The gentleman greeted me immediately. I thought it would take me a minute, but, as I stated, I chose The Brat immediately. I'm a little high strung from my age, so people kinda chuckle. It's cute. I make me smile. They put the perfect amount of mustard on it too! See the photos, but it comes covered with cabbage & crispy fried onions. It is amazing. I was able to get a whole 1/3 of it eaten before my body shut down. Tot wise, they were hot & perfectly fried! I like to dip mine in ketchup, but they offer you various other dips as well. So, I got ranch cuz, um, of course. Also, I really like their soda brand. I can't remember it, but it's a dia de los muertos skull for the logo, but I love their roots beer, which was my beverage of choice today. It's really a nice little place to just come in & sit & enjoy a yummy hotdog alone, or with family/friends.

My partner and I went on a Sunday morning just after 11am and there were already people coming in to eat. It's popular for a reason! I've eaten here a few times and had a very consistently good time, but this review will be about my most recent visit. We visited on a rainy day, but luckily we were able to snag one of the inside tables, we ordered at the counter and our orders arrived very quickly. I got the Ratchet dog which is a beef dog with queso, hot Cheetos and fried jalapeños. Dogfather uses quality dogs and buns for all of their gourmet dogs. I found the Ratchet to be meaty, salty with just right amount of spice from the jalapeños. My partner got the Pop it like it's hot, but removed the jalapeños. This was good but lacking a bit of flavor, however she and I both agreed that was on her for taking the jalapeños off the dog. Both dogs were extremely tasty, and we devoured both. I also got an order of curly fries loaded with their chili and cheese. For me, these did not have to go as HARD as they did. The chili they are using at Dogfather is seriously good, with a slight tang and a good amount of spice. It thrills but does not take away from your meal with too much heat. Very tasty. My only feedback is that Dogfather needs a larger space! There's a good size outside seating area, but for times like today when it's raining people need some coverage. They're doing it right and the crowds want to come! As I have stated this is a local favorite. If you live nearby, make it a regular spot. If you live in San Antonio, do yourself a favor and make a trip over at least sometimes. If you like hot dogs you won't go wrong.

Those thin, greasy, flattop-smacked patties with the crispy edges and buns soaked in all that beef juice? Man, that's what raised me. Then life hit, moved to Houston, and I was posted up right by Lankford Grocery--hitting that spot constant for their juicy, no-bullshit hand-patted burgers that hit the same old-school greasy spoon vibe. Houston kept me fed, but I always felt like something was missing. Moved to San Antonio and bro... I was LOST. Wandering around like a damn fool chasing that perfect hot-griddle smash burger that reminded me of home but didn't suck. Everything was either too fancy or straight-up mid. All the other spots in SA are just dry humpers, bro--teasing you with a bun rub but no real satisfaction. To get that full burger penetration, the juicy deep-dive you actually crave, you gotta pull up to Pumpers. This place is like the engineered lab version for us adults who grew up on Dirty's and Lankford. They took everything we loved about those classic greasy spoons--the loose, coarse, fatty beef balls smashed thin on that screaming hot griddle for the crispy lacy edges, the cheese melting into every crevice, that potato/milk bun sopping up all the grease and juices without falling apart--and turned it into straight PERFECTION. Juicy as hell, seasoned perfect, that char... it's hot ass shit. The vibes are adult (21+ after 9, cheeky as hell), the fries slap, and every bite takes me back but better. No more searching, I found my spot. Only knock? They need to up their beer game heavy. It'd be straight fire if they featured real Texas beers on tap instead of those national queers. Everything else though? Pumpers got me feeling like a kid again but with grown-man money and zero regrets. If you're from that same bloodline of Texas flattop burgers, stop what you're doing and get here. Best I've had in years, hands down. 10/10, will be a regular till they kick me out. (Pro tip: Get the classic with extra cheese and thank me later.) I love the atmosphere, but I would not stay and eat my burger there because the beers suck. There's not a single Texas beer from a small Independent Brewer, and that sacrilegious in my opinion. Also the fact that they have no hot peppers that aren't candy coated, glazed, bullshit, but they're still a 10 out of 10 even though the lettuce should be shredded like my abs.

Very dangerous, but delicious nonetheless lol. There was plenty of seating and the cones they give for your order are super cute.
