5/5 Stars - Pumpers just saved my burger soul, fr fr Yo, I'm from Austin originally, straight grew up smashing Dirty's on the Drag like it was my religion back in the day. Those thin, greasy, flattop-smacked patties with the crispy edges and buns soaked in all that beef juice? Man, that's what raised me. Then life hit, moved to Houston, and I was posted up right by Lankford Grocery--hitting that spot constant for their juicy, no-bullshit hand-patted burgers that hit the same old-school greasy spoon vibe. Houston kept me fed, but I always felt like something was missing. Moved to San Antonio and bro... I was LOST. Wandering around like a damn fool chasing that perfect hot-griddle smash burger that reminded me of home but didn't suck. Everything was either too fancy or straight-up mid. All the other spots in SA are just dry humpers, bro--teasing you with a bun rub but no real satisfaction. To get that full burger penetration, the juicy deep-dive you actually crave, you gotta pull up to Pumpers. This place is like the engineered lab version for us adults who grew up on Dirty's and Lankford. They took everything we loved about those classic greasy spoons--the loose, coarse, fatty beef balls smashed thin on that screaming hot griddle for the crispy lacy edges, the cheese melting into every crevice, that potato/milk bun sopping up all the grease and juices without falling apart--and turned it into straight PERFECTION. Juicy as hell, seasoned perfect, that char... it's hot ass shit. The vibes are adult (21+ after 9, cheeky as hell), the fries slap, and every bite takes me back but better. No more searching, I found my spot. Only knock? They need to up their beer game heavy. It'd be straight fire if they featured real Texas beers on tap instead of those national queers. Everything else though? Pumpers got me feeling like a kid again but with grown-man money and zero regrets. If you're from that same bloodline of Texas flattop burgers, stop what you're doing and get here. Best I've had in years, hands down. 10/10, will be a regular till they kick me out. (Pro tip: Get the classic with extra cheese and thank me later.) I love the atmosphere, but I would not stay and eat my burger there because the beers suck. There's not a single Texas beer from a small Independent Brewer, and that sacrilegious in my opinion. Also the fact that they have no hot peppers that aren't candy coated, glazed, bullshit, but they're still a 10 out of 10 even though the lettuce should be shredded like my abs. read more

This is the second time I've gotten the Culo Melt burger. It's BOMB. It has a nice kick to it and the sweet jalapenos compliment it well. I will always come here after drinking at Hops & Hounds down the street. It is definitely the best spot in walking distance to grab a bite to eat. The service has been great the last two times I've gone. No complaints there. I also got the Bushwacker drink and it tasted just like a milkshake. It was delicious as well. Thus place has some of the best burger in San Antonio. The hot dogs are also a must with their home made chilli. I always get chili cheese fries but you have to salt the fries yourself. The fries remind me of how McDonald's use to taste like back in the day. It's hard not to keep going for me since the fries and hot dogs are cooked in beef tallow. It is expensive but it's high quality without the snobbiness some burger places push on you to justify the price. It's kind small in there but seating outside is available. The service is always fast and the person at the bar is always nice. I give it a 4.5 only due to price but it's worth it! read more

Honestly one of the best burger spots in SA for not only the food but also the retro dinner vibes. My only complaint is that the food does take a while to come out if it's crowded, but it's well worth the wait. The last exit burger was really yummy, with the bun being the star of the show. I'm not sure what buns they use or how they toasted them, but the buns were magical. The fries are also fried in beef tallow so you get the McDonalds fries taste without the McDonalds fries guilt. Also, street parking is a hit or miss depending on what time you come, so just keep that in mind if you want to dine in during prime time dinner hours/on the weekend. read more

It's been a long time since I ate a burger and before I left San Antonio I had to stop at Pumpers. They call themselves the Adult Burger Store because after 9 pm they only allow 21 and up. They also have some edgy branding throughout the store and the atmosphere can feel like a late night, bar and drink hangout. The decor is eye catching especially now that it's halloween. I ordered a margarita. It was pretty strong. The bar tender did a great job with it. She was super friendly, seemed like she enjoyed working there. And for my burger, I ordered the, Last Exit (To Pumpers). Cute name. It was flavorful and juicy. I couldn't finish the whole thing but what I did eat I was pretty satisfied. And the fries are delicious. Love me a good thin fry that pairs nicely with a burger. read more

This review for Pumpers had to start at three stars because of advertising incorrect pricing for happy hour and stayed that way because of the food. The sign outside and the information on their website said the hot dogs were all $5 during happy hour. They charged me $8.50 for my hot dog because they recently changed their pricing. They should have honored the happy hour price on the sign outside of $5. I got the chili cheese dog and fries. The hot dog was good not great and the the fries were just okay. You do get a lot of fries with a regular order. I think this place is just okay and they need to get their stuff together. All it would have taken to adjust the price on the sign was some tape. No more no less. I'm not considering coming back because of a simple situation that could have easily been solved. read more

If you are near downtown San Antonio & want a burger stop by Pumpers. It is a hole in the wall right off a major street (Broadway) a small comfy little spot. There is street parking available which probably be the only down side of this restaurant. Although it didn't take us, but one time around the block to find a parking. the service was fast and efficient you walk in order your food and find the seat. They will bring the food out to you when it's ready. I went at lunchtime about 1230 on a Friday, the wait time was about five minutes, which is wonderful, especially when you're hungry haha. I had the pumper sandwich which was good. The bread is nice & soft the beef patty was very filling. I really liked the French fries. My Son had this spicy chicken sandwich. He enjoyed it. A couple of things I noticed right away: the place is tiny... I would not go at "peak time". I was there yesterday at 2 PM... With only a handful of other patrons. Second, I wonder how this place is ADA compliant... With the steps it takes to get into the restaurant. I even walked around the back of the building after my meal to see if there was another ADA friendly way to enter. There did not appear to be. It was my first time here, and the gentleman behind the counter taking my order was nice and friendly. He was knowledgeable about the burgers and the menu in general. They didn't have Topo Chico, though, which was a downer. I ate the Charles Junior burger and fries. The burger was large, so I felt the price point was in the right range. I momentarily wondered whether it would be unmanageable. It turned out to be the right combination of messy... Without being unmanageable and falling apart! Although I recommend you cut the burger in half... The fries were fantastic! Right out of the fryer perfectly golden... Fresh. My last two cons: napkins, and service. If you're gonna serve burgers like this, please upgrade your napkins. The napkins are very thin, and cheap feeling. I literally found myself reaching for a new napkin after every bite because the napkins practically disintegrate after just one use. Lastly, although service started strong with the gentleman behind the counter, I was only checked on once during my meal, even though I was sitting at the bar. We came here on a Tuesday for a late lunch. There is a small parking lot on the north side of the building and street parking all around the area. You order at the counter right where you walk in and they bring your food to your table. The music was a little loud, but not too bad. The restaurant was small and I bet is a madhouse on weekends. We both got the lunch specials which were burgers, fries, and a drink. I got The Pumper and my wife got the #1. The food came out quick. I am a burger girl and the burgers here at Pumpers are gonna PUMP YOU UP! You will be super satisfied with service, price, amount of food, freshness, and the flexibility to chill in some cushiony booths or right up at the bar. I saw a couple of tables outside too for those late nights of coming in and hanging with friends for some great food and even a nightcap. Menu is super creative and easy to read. I love the branding behind Pumpers so much because it gives late-night reliable spot with no complaints or notes from me. My sister and I sat at the bar and service was quick. Just a heads up that you will want to front load/order all you want up front as they will go ticket by ticket or basically make you pay for your order before they put in the bill first. All good - this just made me get all the things that catch my eye when viewing their menu. In a large group and/or a rush order from the take-out side that has plenty of registers to take on each one in your group and customize each order. I would highly suggest getting the extra things that catch your appetite like their add on's like an extra patty, candied bacon, or even cheese sauce. You won't regret it. Great original smash burgers! I had the Charles Jr. a crazy concoction of 2 smash burgers, bacon, fried onion rings, BBQ sauce and cheese. It was a total mess and incredibly delicious (I rate burgers based on taste and messiness - the more of each the better LOL)! They have water and cups available at the counter, and the fries are cooked in actual beef fat - not some toxic vegetable oil - excellent. I don't usually eat fries, but these were worth it: just enough crispiness with out being hard, and very flavorful. They also have canned standard beers and some wines and cocktails available, and have a specialty cocktail called a "BUSHWACKER", which actually looks crazy-good (if I were a cocktail drinker...). It is a counter-oder/deliver to table type place, and each order is made on request - none of that premade fresh sitting-under-a-heatlamp stuff. The place has a hip vibe on a small scale, the people serving are friendly and sweet, happy to have a little convo with you. It's a great little place opened since 2024. Tried this place for the first time. I ordered the cheese burger which comes with 2 patties. And I had to try the French fries because they are fried in beef fat. The burger is char grilled and buns toasted. The burger was well seasoned and had great flavor. You can taste the char grilled flavor as soon as you bite into it. I would rank this burger in the top 2 of my favorite burgers in san antonio. Next I tried the French fries and they had amazing flavor. I think frying them in beef fat really made a difference. I was amazed how much I liked the food here! Plus the staff was super friendly. I work near by and my co-worker suggested we eat here. So we walked the 4 blocks and worked up an appetite. I got the Culo Melt combo and Ohhhh Maaaaah God! It was THD most tastiest burger I have EVER had! The aioli was sooo yummy I was scooping the dripping off my plate with my fries! Word of caution.. this burger WILL get all over the place. But that's the beauty of it. If it doesn't get all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face. The place was smaller than I expected. Clean but small, and I personally do not the patience to wait when I am hungry. Although when we went, there was no wait. The bar area sits around 5 people. And then there are a couple two seater tables and I think 2 four seater tables. Not good for groups. Parking is on the street or paid parking a couple of blocks up. The food was good. I was concerned about it being a double Patty since I never order doubles but I finished all of it. They do need better quality napkins if the burgers are going to be messy.
