oh man, what can I say about this bakery??? well, I will say this... I come here for their Gianduia cake... it's like my FAVORITE cake ever!!! chocolate mousse, chocolate icing, hint of hazelnut, with a crunchy bottom... it's like a giant Ferrero rocher in a bite!!! My daughter ordered a Christening cake for over $100. Im in shock at what she got. This is Gencarelli's Bakery a well know bakery thats been around for years. I have never ever received a cake that was sooooo sloppily decorated. All she wanted on cake was a cross and a few flowers. Cross looked awful and was crooked the flowers had white petals which blended into the background they were unrecognizable the border sloppy. Babys name was spelled wrong they had to fix. I went in next day to show pics of cake, workers agreed with me that this wasnt good. I was told to email pic. of cake to store manager. I got a response with her apologies and she said i could pic up a $25 gift card... I thought that was a insult not that i expected to be compensated for the full amount but come on. It was a total embarrassment. Gencarelli's has beautiful cakes what we received was garbage. They should be ashamed of themselves. I also spoke to the owner he said he didnt know what happened i showed him pictures. He agreed called out the cake decorater who said " she was suppose to pick up cake saturday and she came sunday @ 7 am oh i had to do the whole cake over". Now we all know that was a dam lie. So sorry for them. I will never order a cake from them ever. Everyone at the party wont either.Gencarelli's you certainly could of done way better. read more

Last week I discovered this place and I ordered their Hazelnut Mousse Cake... I read online that it tastes exactly like the Ferrero Rocher chocolate. My husband had specifically requested it for his birthday so it was a relief that I didn't have to go to Bloomfield (their other location) for this. I called in a week in advance to make sure they'll have it and they assured me they would. The cake itself was delicious, and I loved the little crunch layer at the bottom... And yes it did taste like Ferrero Rocher. The only complaint was that the cake was $25, but only fed about 6-8 people. I didn't mind paying because it was for a special occasion. read more

Don't order a rum cake unless you want a rum cake without rum. Called after Christmas to inform them that they forgot to put any rum flavor in the cake and was rudely told how they don't use real rum. No customer service at all . This morning I was very disappointed in this bakery. Nothing worked the way it should. I wanted to buy 3 loaves of bread but the slicer machine did not work. It was not the first time. Last time, I just turned around and left, but today, I did not have time to go elsewhere, so I bought one loaf. Then, my favorite cheese croissant was not made at all, so I bought another kind for about the price of a loaf of bread! A fly was hovering over the pasty as usual (even in the middle of winter!). I also wanted to get a small cup of coffee but the small cups were gone. Moreover, out of the two coffee pots, the one that had the regular coffee was empty, so my only "choice" was the flavored one, which I don't like. I paid close to $13 without getting what I wanted and being satisfied with anything. The manager was not there in the morning, I was told she would come for 10 AM. This bakery used to be a good one. Now, they sell a lot of other items that do not belong to a bakery, but rather a deli. But it does not make up the loss of customers if the selection, the service, the increasing price and lack of care about details prevent people from returning. read more

First time and last time. The customer service is good. The store is a nice size like a major grocery store layout. But was sold moldy fruit on my cake which is major no for me. This should have been checked prior to being displayed and/or checked prior bring sold to me & wrapped up in the box which I can't see myself due to the high counter displays. The photo may have you think it's frosting but it's not. clearly mold on the strawberry. Unfortunately this left a bad taste for me and I can't see myself patronizing there again as a result. read more

I ordered a cake for my friend's bachelorette dinner and it was not exactly what I ordered. I wanted a plain yellow cake with chocolate mousse filling. I asked for buttercream icing with blue writing "Last Sail Before the Veil" written in blue with a red Anchor below and no flowers. When I got there to pick up the cake not only was the writing sloppy as can be but "sail" was spelled wrong. When I pointed it out they took the cake to the bake and it looked like someone took their finger and wiped it away and tried to fix it. Looked awful. There was no attempt to make the presentation better. I learned my lesson and I will stick to the Gencarellis in Bloomfield. read more

They even make bread daily and fill cannoli on the spot. I've special ordered some cakes and they came out great as well. Wayne is a great place to live for a number of reasons, and not so great for some other reasons. One of the cons would be the lack of a vibrant food culture. Thank heaven for Gencarelli's, a real silver lining in the dark cloud that is local gastronomy. The Apple strudel here is great, as are the cannolis, any of the other pastry types filled with cannoli cream, cheesecake, and the individual serving size dessert pastries. Pies, especially fruit pies, are ok. Breads and rolls are delicious, but go early in the day as they tend to run out. Birthday cakes are fresh, delicious and custom decorated while you wait. The staff are friendly and efficient. read more

This bakery is very good but a little expensive. My biggest issue with them is that I just paid $48 for a 10 inch cake and they managed to spell my daughters name wrong for the second year in a row even though It was correct on the paperwork. Obviously their cake decorator does not bother looking. When you have someone else pick the cake up for you and they had to wait on a long line to do that, there is no time for them to wait and have the cake fixed. They should have a special line for order pick ups that are paid for. I will probably be hesitate to use them again for any birthday cake. read more

Whenever it's a special occasion, I always check Gencarelli's to see if they have the hazelnut cake available. It's best to call ahead of time because there were a couple of instances where I was ready to drive to the bakery, but they were out of the hazelnut cakes. read more

Started going here about a year and half ago. This is the best bakery in the Wayne area. They have a decent variety of cakes, pies, and cookies. The pastries are very fresh, and the coffee is very good. They also offer a large selection of bread, bagels. read more

Their cookies tasted good until the customer service/manager was nasty. I don't get how an ignorant/incompetent worker like Wendy is a manager. I swiped my card for $5.40 and the machine says approved. She then says that it didn't go through if their stupid register didn't open. Someone has no common sense that if the machine says approved, it's done! I didn't want to argue so I just swiped it again. She says I can call her if I get charged twice. I get charged twice and had to waste time to go back to let her know and I show her the statement and she has nerves to make me wait and says she has to check on her end. She comes out with a receipt of a donut purchase for $5.90 and says 'see! It was charged once!' Disgusting attitude and customer service. The ignorance is beyond belief. I just showed her the amount of $5.40 and I had bought cookies. She then says I need to call her boss. She gives me a number. I argue that she is the one that is supposed to handle this and resolve it. And she dares to say she doesn't want to bother. Lazy and incompetent. How do u survive? I wish I read other reviews about custom cake orders before I placed mine. Never again. I have high expectations to this bakery cause they makes such delicious cakes. But custom cakes forget about it. We had a put the order with pictures attached on emails, called at the store to check, and Wendy even repeats the order. Time to pick it up the cupcake cake, OMG I never see a school bus colored light brown, peach. Are they color blind? Or they run out of yellow food coloring? Even my son who is two years old knows what school bus color is, YELLOW!!! Baker comes out when I told them how frustrated I am how it come out, and his depend was that whats on the picture! Great Bakery. Had an issue where a friend ordered accidentally at a different Gencarelli's Bakery and I had to pick up. They accommodated me and my friend I was able to get my order with no issues. Great service from Wendy and Nick who has helped me the whole time. They also had great recommendations of things to try on a first time. Actual bakery is very well kept in clean. Stopped here Easter Sunday for a box of assorted cookies and it was so busy! I've come here before for cookies and they definitely do a nice job keeping the bakery looking clean, presentable, and smelling even better than ever! Their m&m cookies are my favorite. This bakery has very stale pastries and is so overrated and over priced. Today, being Sunday you would think the pastries would be fresh, but no they couldn't be more stale. This is probably the last time I go there. It's just not worth the HIGH PRICES. The pasticotti were beyond stale, they were totally inedible. I had a coupon so I purchase 6-7 pastries and we all had issues with them. I just don't understand it. They should just make smaller batches. I have always been a lover of Italian rum cake for my birthday. My parents always got it from Paterson Pastry Shop & I've tasted many other's bakery versions. None cld compare UNTIL NOW...This cake is so fresh & light...so much better than Paterson Pastry's heavy rum cake. It is a melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Icing is creamy and not sweet. Usually love this bakery but has a crappy experience there yesterday. My mother who lives in Florida is visiting & she loves the pignoli cookies from here. I stopped in & asked a young man at the counter if they had any. I did not see them in the cookie case. He said he had no idea & did not ask anyone. He proceeded to ignore me. I looked around & decided to asked a twenty something guy who just finished with another customer. He got very snippy with me and said that in the future I should call first to see if they have them & that it's hit or miss. Ummm ok. So the story goes.....I went in to order two cakes for my daughter's 1st birthday party. I was greeted by a young gentlemen who was friendly. I said I'd like to place a cake order, and that I would like a full fondant cake as the main cake, and then a very small "smash cake" for my daughter with just regular icing. I showed him a sample on my phone. He brought it back to someone in the back to get me a price quote. The gentleman was friendly, but seemed a bit confused as to some of the questions I asked. He said to email the cake decorator and explain everything you are looking in the cake order. He took my order down on paper with my phone number, etc. I wasn't asked to leave a deposit, or was given any order slip, etc. I emailed this person when I got back home with my cake order with photo samples, etc. I said in my initial email that I would like somewhere on the fondant cake to read Happy Birthday with my daughter's name, or just my daughter's name somewhere on the cake at least. We went back and forth through the emails clarifying details, etc. The day comes where we go to pick up the cakes...My husband went into the bakery, and when the cakes were brought out, there was no "Happy Birthday" on the cake or my daughter's name anywhere on it. My husband complained stating they didn't follow directions per the email. He said that those instructions were not given to him. Apparently, the person I emailed was supposed to forward directions, and did not tell him that. My husband was upset, and the man behind counter was rude and defensive. He wrote her name on the cake board to somehow make up for it, but we still weren't too happy about it. On a positive note, the cake decorator did a beautiful job on the cake itself. read more
