In June 2026, I received a dress back damaged. I had worn the dress only once before bringing it in for cleaning. The dress cost $470. After I reported the damage, I was asked to provide the retailer's website so they could verify the cost and arrange reimbursement. I was later told the business was waiting to restock the dress, with no estimated delivery date. I explained that I preferred reimbursement rather than having the business purchase a replacement on my behalf.
What made this experience particularly troubling was a subsequent phone conversation with a member of management. While I was calmly and respectfully discussing the damaged garment and seeking a resolution, the manager stated that she would not be treated "like a slave."
As a Black woman whose family has a personal history of sharecropping and whose father grew up during the Jim Crow era, I found that remark deeply offensive and completely inappropriate in the context of a customer service conversation. Regardless of intent, that language was unnecessary and caused genuine distress. When I asked for the owner's contact information so I could address my concerns directly, the call was ended.
I called back and spoke with another employee, who apologized for the interaction and indicated that someone would follow up. I appreciated her attempt to help. However, I subsequently sent a formal letter to the owner detailing the damaged garment, the interaction with management, and my concerns. I never received a response to my letter.
I eventually received a $400 check and a $100 store credit. Although I received some compensation, the check did not cover the full cost of the dress, and the store credit is of no value to me because I will never return to this establishment.
After years of loyalty and patronage, I expected accountability for the damage to my clothing, respectful treatment, and the courtesy of a response from ownership. Instead, I was left disappointed by both the customer service experience and the lack of communication from the owner.
For me, this is about more than a damaged dress. It is about how a business treats a longtime customer when something goes wrong, the language used during a customer service interaction, and whether management is willing to take responsibility and address legitimate concerns.
Unfortunately, this experience has permanently broken my trust in this business. I will not be returning. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and recognizes the importance of treating every customer with professionalism, respect, and accountability.
