I was highly recommended to bring larger items here, like my comforter, and based on my first experience, I understood why. The initial service was impeccable, which is why I decided to return. I'm giving two stars out of grace for that first visit. Unfortunately, my second experience with the exact same item was disappointing. When I picked up my comforter, I noticed small specks of lint scattered across it. I brought this to the manager's attention, and while she insisted she personally handled my item and attempted to remove the lint, that explanation didn't align with the final result. If the issue couldn't be resolved, I should have been notified before leaving--not after I had to point it out myself. I did receive a refund, which I appreciate, but I genuinely wanted this to work. It seemed like the manager had already made up her mind that nothing further could be done, and there was no real effort to try to resolve the issue. At that point, I simply asked for my item back so I could take it somewhere that handles items with more care and attention to detail. It honestly made me question whether my comforter was mixed in with others during the process, especially since I take great care in maintaining it, including regularly steam disinfecting it at home. What was also frustrating was that instead of focusing on my concern, the manager began explaining how other customers' items can come in, as if I was expected to sympathize. My only concern was the condition of my item. Based on this experience, I would recommend keeping it simple here--stick to everyday dry cleaning. I would not suggest bringing larger bedding items like comforters or duvet covers, as the quality and attention to detail may not be consistent. read more

Continuing on in the current alphabet series nearing the end of the prior to 2018 to 2024 series, where after I will be going back through with twentysomething more in this period of time of runner-ups of DMV businesses for ones where I picked a place out of town originally to promote (more places local to the DMV). Representing prior to 2018, Y is for Yates Dry Cleaning. I lived in 2 rooms in houses in Del Ray Alexandria. The 2nd of the houses (Apr.-Oct. 2014), one of the roommates worked at Yates. He told me I could get half off my shirts, pants, etc. At this time in Spring 2014, I was dressed nice for the office & work travel 4-5 days a week, so dry cleaning was important. I went to Yates a few times while living in Del Ray. The quality was overall good, maybe a couple of minor things the few times I went there. Their regular price in 2014 was a ripoff; it's more like what someone might've paid in the early 2020's I'm guessing. I went in, and they'd argue it's only a 25% off. I said no the roommate (who I forgot what his name was) gave me 50% off. There was a bit of back & forth. Even at 25% off, it would've been more than a lot of places in 2014. Ultimately, they'd concede as they still wanted the business, but I didn't like having to fight with them. In October 2014, I moved to southwest Arlington near Bailey's Crossroads, so Yates was a lot less convenient. I went once or twice as I wasn't confident about what was a good dry cleaner in my new area and went with what I already knew, but Old Town Alexandria area was a haul. I looked around on Yelp & wasn't convinced on my most local options within a couple of miles from me, and ended up going to one in Falls Church on the other side of the downtown (See my May 2018 5-star review of Spectrum Cleaner, also a different alphabet series). Although it wasn't close to my home, it was still a bit easier than schlepping to Yate's plus I did get tired of arguing about the 50% off. read more

For the past couple of months I have utilized their services two maybe three times a week and also had my alterations done here, until today. Twice a week I would pay $6.18 per uniform shirt to be dry cleaned, but today, to my surprise (without any prior notice) I was asked to pay double the amount of $12.48. I used to come here all the time, but I finally stopped a few months ago. At first, I loved it--the location is super convenient, parking is easy, and the staff is genuinely friendly. They always greeted me with a smile, and my clothes consistently came back looking crisp and well cared for. The problem was the turnaround time. No matter what I dropped off, it always seemed to take about a week to get it back. If you're in a pinch or just want things done quickly, that gets frustrating fast. And while I don't mind paying for good service, their prices are definitely on the high side compared to other cleaners nearby. In the end, it just wasn't working for me anymore. I just used Yates and was trying to have a 24 hour turn around time, I had two shirts and two suits. As I get home to make sure that the suits were presed well, came to find that both suits were totally ruined, one had a two stain marks that you get when you use clorox, and anthe other had a food stain that did not have when I dropped off the clothing. I have a very important couple of days now , gonna be stuck delaying my business meetings. Do not recomend this place, spent $56 to have my clothes ruined. read more

I've been here 3x to have dresses hemmed. Each time it was $35. I just went again and she now wants $90 to take 3" off a dress and $125 if it's hand sewn. I asked why it was such a drastic price change for a fourth dress (same alterations and all dresses from the same designer) and she laughed and denied ever charging $35 for hemming. I've only lived in the area for 2 months. They were done very recently. I get a lot of alterations done so I said I would have to go elsewhere for the drastic price change and she just laughed at me with no explanation. My husband has been taking all his dry cleaning here weekly and we found a new place down the street that's more consistent with pricing. read more

I brought a dress in to have it tailored. I had the back taken in, the cleavage sewn up higher, and the dress tailored at the bottom. It was done so so quick! The woman who does alterations was so kind, and even though I didn't know if she could do it because of my "impossible" straps, she made it work and I looked so beautiful for my military ball. I've unfortunately had to stop coming to Yates. In the beginning, Joy was offering amazing work for a fair price point. I had just moved to LA and was looking for an alterations place. This seemed like the spot. Unfortunately, and now as I'm reading reviews, it seems there is an inconsistency with pricing. My third and fourth times visiting there I actually returned with my clothes I needed altered because it was way too expensive. My fourth and final visit was for two bridesmaids dresses I needed for two of my best friends' weddings a week apart. The dresses were around $100 each and I was not going to pay more than that for alterations. Keep in mind all I needed was a few inches off and it wasn't like it was a special or difficult fabric with anything hard. It was simple chiffon with a liner underneath ... nothing crazy. I had tried on both dresses for Joy and she placed the pins on it. I went back out and she told me they would be $200 each. I looked at her and gasped. She then told me that was my discount and showed me another bridesmaids dress she was working on and charged $250. I left. I bought $10 hem tape on Amazon for one dress that was a beach wedding and I was never going to wear again. It came out great. The second I cared a little more about and got altered at Zips for $50... it came out perfect. Please be aware of what you're paying for. I really wanted to support this business, but the prices here unfortunately have become astronomical and I have moved on to going elsewhere. read more

Used to be a great dry cleaner and tailor. Dry cleaner became vastly more expensive and suddenly ruined a few articles of clothing but wouldn't make it right, after years of loyalty and clear evidence that they'd actually damaged clothing. I am a long time Yates dry cleaner customer and honestly, since they've lost Bob and Kim, things have been slowly going downhill. We never get the emails that clothes are ready, shirts take a week or longer to, the quality control has gone done, we've picked up shirts with dirty sleeves and broken buttons. I was only coming here to use Mrs. Lee's alterations services, and although overpriced, she was always able to alter my clothes last minute so I accepted it. I would drop off at least 3-4 pairs of pants almost every other week. The last time I came toward the end of last year, the dry cleaning side had misplaced my pants. At this time, I hadn't realized which pair they were and I was going out of the country for a few months so I had other things on my mind and Janelle, one of the cashiers, had told me that she would take care of it anytime I came back to reimburse me by writing a check or replacing the pair of pants that they had lost. I put complete trust in her reassurance that 3 months later, I reach out to let her know that I was back and would like the reimbursement for my pants and sent her the link to them. Once she sees the price of the pants, she called and acted like she was confused about what had taken place and there was no ticket in the system and that I have all of my things already? She then blames it on the "people upstairs" saying that she can't write the check because they're in charge of that even though she had reassured me herself that she would take care of it because she was there when she realized that my pants were missing from the pickup. This place is not trustworthy. I would not take any clothes of value to this establishment as they will not take accountability if they lose your things. I'm still waiting for Janelle to give me a call back and deny any responsibility or the whole incident from happening? Had I known they would deny accountability, I would have spoken to actual management and demanded my reimbursement then and there. read more

I dropped off a nice white denim jacket to have a small stain taken care of, which they got out perfectly. For whatever reason, there was a new orange stain on the sleeve that they denied responsibility for, but said they would take care of. Next time I came for it, the orange stain was gone, but there was now a light pink stain on both sleeves, as well as the front and back of the jacket. I was angry, as they again claimed that they had no fault for staining my jacket. I came back to pick it up today, and only about half the pink is gone, and they claimed they can't work on it further. They still expected me to pay. Ridiculous. read more

I've used both dry cleaning and alteration services for multiple items, and overall they did a good job. Alterations - I've had at least 4 pairs of pants done quicker than the dates they promised. Ms. Joy (I think that's her name) was so thorough in making sure I was satisfied with the lengths of my pants, even when I forgot my heels. She's great! So polite and professional! Dry cleaning - So this is where I couldn't give the full 5 stars. I had several blouses/tops cleaned and some of the stains were still there when I picked them up. They weren't super visible, but my previous cleaning shop had no issues removing the same kinds. Other than that, the staff here was also polite and professional. Overall, this place is a bit more expensive than what I'm used to, but then again, it is in Old Town. And everything seems to be pricier here. read more

You pay a nice penny to come here but I think it's worth it! The customer service is always friendly, the place doesn't stink of chemicals, and best of all - my clothes have always been properly cared for. What drew me to them originally was that they don't use staples or safety pins on the clothes (for the cleaning tag) which is one of my annoyances with other places. Because she's honest -- if she doesn't think it's worth your money to do it, then she will tell you. And she won't do a job that will damage the clothing. I tried to convince her to do so once haha and I'm SO glad she told me the truth and encouraged me not to go forward. But with the items she HAS tailored for me, her quality has been impeccable. Review focus: Alterations at Yates I've had dry cleaning done here and it is effective and timely. My focus here is to discuss Joy's work in the alterations section. Normally, I have a talented tailor in DC. After problems with tailors on the west side of the river, I was glad to find Joy. I'm hesitant to take nice clothes to a dry cleaner for alterations (nice = Brooks Bros 1880/Canali coats/suits/pants). I started taking small job to Joy, but over time, she gained my trust. I've been taking nicer and nicer things to her. She did great alterations on BB pants and a Gieves and Hawke jacket to her. I was very happy with her work. Prices for aliterations are lower than I've seen elsewhere. Timing is relatively quick. Highly recommended! read more

Yates is a fantastic dry cleaner! I'm a big vintage shopper and sometimes when you buy a vintage piece, it has a stain or two and you have to take a gamble and hope the stain will be able to be removed! Well Yates has been able to remove them every time so far! Even a stain that looked like an ink stain. My boyfriend is also a regular customer and they do a great job on his everyday items like suits and tuxedos. I bought him a vintage YSL smoking jacket that needed some repairs and their alterations department did a fantastic job fixing it and making it perfect! read more

I suppose it's Old Town and everything is on the higher end, but I still think it's a rip-off. I will say, however, that the establishment is clean and I was helped immediately. I went into Yates to have my pants tailored and the tailor charged me $35, after acting like she was giving me some huge discount. I'm still mad about it. I noticed that Yates Cleaning was offering a 25% check in discount, so I figured that I would give them a try, and I am glad that I did. The first thing that I noticed about their store was that it pristine clean, which I kind of think a cleaners should be. I went on to ask the manager about a stain on one of my cherished Tommy Bahama shirts ( that's right, people, taking fashion tips from Two and a Half Men's Charlie) and the manager explained that they would use a wet technique which he discovered in Paris. I had never heard of this, but the French have brought us the baguette and Bree so I thought why not? All I can say is that this was a great choice for my dry cleaning, for the quality of Yates' service was far superior to that of other cleaners that I have patronized. Everything was spotless and fresh, and I immediately started to think of other items that would benefit from a visit to Yates.. Time for a spruce up on my bedspread from India.. I commented on their quality of care and their manager Bob proudly announced that they are completely use products that are Eco friendly. Ok, not such a big thing for me but my Greenpeace and PETA fans will love it. He also said that they have free pickup and delivery. What!? Stop the press! I am sold, or as George Jefferson would say, "we're moving on up." I did notice that other reviews mentioned that Yates was a bit pricy, but that might be true if you are used to visiting a discount cleaner, but for quality service, I say this is the spot; besides, when you factor in the perks of free pickup and delivery, coupons on their website for 25% off, and superior cleaning methods, it is all worth it.
