This is the first review I have ever written, because I am so compelled by how poorly this process went.
I have lived all over the country, from Philadelphia to NYC, then to Alaska - GCI is far and away the worst COMPANY I have ever dealt with, let alone cable and internet provider.
For starters, they are literally the only option many people will have. AKA you are doomed to join this monopoly eventually.
Once you get in, you will realize that every single one of your accounts is separate, even though they will tell you that you somehow signed up for a bundle that you didn't want.
When you realize their feeble internet only delivers 1/4 of the promised speeds even during non-peak hours (I could barely stream MLB TV with a HARD WIRED CONNECTION), you will find there is nothing you can do. When you go over your bandwith limit and ask why you can't have unlimited connectivity, like the rest of the United States, you will find your best option is to increase your limit for a ludicrous monthly fee. Internet was more reliable, cheaper, and faster in New York city, where unlimited options were the only choice. You will be told this is because of the expansiveness of their network, no matter how many times you remind them this is not your problem, since you are most likely located in a more populated area. Then they will tell you about people who try and hog bandwith, which again, does not seem to be an issue to the rest of the country. Alaska must be the home of pirates, not those who enjoy the outdoors?
Finally, when you go to cancel your service, they will tell you about a 2 year contract you never agreed to for the aforementioned bundle that you didn't know existed. They will tell you how much money you saved on the bundle you never agreed to, and that you now owe them hundreds of dollars to cancel your account. When you ask them to provide proof of an agreement, they will not be able to find it, thus waiving the $200 fee they made up in the first place. You will then pay out the remaining balance of the account, and ask if everything has been taken care of. They will say yes.
Then, weeks later, you will find that they are still billing you for services you no longer have. That is because by canceling your account in the store, and affirming that everything has been canceled, it turns out the ebilling is still in affect. They will charge you hundreds of dollars for your services, and return what they think is right - one month later. Oh, and make sure you cancel both accounts that were bundled individually, because they are separate to make this process as painful as possible. You will call and complain, and they will tell you they have no account of your payment at the time of cancellation, and you will be forced to provide it. They will even ask if the equipment has been returned. I guess they can't keep track of such things..
This was my experience with GCI, the worst company I have ever dealt with. Ever.
It's arguably one of the worst Monopolies I've ever seen, and I'm from Comcast country. read more
