Although this place was highly recommended to us, we had a pretty mediocre experience for dinner. The staff is very nice and we were seated right away on a busy Friday night. We ordered the smoked wings as an appetizer. They had an interesting buffalo sauce on them but it wasn't exactly sticking to the chicken, more like dripping off of it. As we were eating, we noticed many of the wings were pink and undercooked. It was very unappetizing. Our server took it off the bill. My husband had the smash burger and although the patties weren't exactly smashed, he said it tasted good. I had the 12 oz ribeye with a side Caesar. The salad had a lot of dressing but it was ok. The steak had a lot of fat that I cut off, more than I am used to on a ribeye. The mushrooms on top had no flavor and were also undercooked. We decided to skip dessert after a pretty underwhelming meal. We liked the roaring 20s decor and the variety on the menu but probably wouldn't return in the future. read more

It's a small 1920's vibe restaurant. Our server Amy was excellent. We just stopped in for something light as a snack. My husband and I shared a smoked salmon spread that came with delicious toasted pita bread triangles! Diet Cokes completed our snack. We will drop in again for a meal in future. Food- Salmon with ginger glaze was flavorful and flaky. Side of vegetables were seasoned well. Chicken Caesar Salad was fresh and chicken was juicy too. Broccoli soup was good but a little different, as it had other vegetables in it. Do not skip the desserts.... Apple bread pudding was sweet and served with ice cream and caramel. It was a gorgeous day, so my husband and I sat on the patio -- three tables from the entrance. We had just gotten our food when my husband bit into his whitefish sandwich and realized the skin was still on the fish under the batter. Before we could even process that, an older man walked out to the patio, stopped less than six feet from us, and threw up. Twice. Right at the entrance and directly upwind of our table. We were gagging. The waiter came out and asked how we were doing. We said, "Not great," and he shrugged it off with, "Yeah, that's the second time this week -- but it's not our food." Meanwhile, the only way out was through the puddle of vomit. Then another staff member came out and dumped bleach on it, so now we were stuck smelling bleach on top of everything else. And after all that, they didn't comp a single thing. Gatsby's used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but after this experience, we won't be back. read more

I ordered an ny strip steak (the Manhattan?), and it was excellent! Juicy, tender and cooked to perfection. It was one of the best steak dinners I've had away from home. The service was amazing as well. They have a full service bar and a great selection on their menu, including dessert. The ambience was good, albeit a bit noisy. read more

My sister loved the loaded potato side, I had steak fajitas wrap with steak fries ( had just the right zing to it), my brother in law had shrimp tacos with a mango sauce which he raved about and my husband the sirloin wrap. we had a great waitress, very attentive! This was a step back in time. The saloon is set up like an old speakeasy lots of fun decor to take a look at. We didn't get anything to eat but we did just stop in and have drinks and it was very comfortable. The bar sits in the back of the dining area so you're not sitting in the middle of everyone having dinner. The bartender was very kind fast and efficient. Gatsby's Saloon offers an upscale tavern atmosphere with good food and drink. Escargot is prepared and served outside their shell in a cheesy, garlic herbed butter and has a steakhouse feel/taste, which is pleasant. The sashimi grade tuna could use a bit more aggressive sear, but is also of great quality. Sitting at the bar, we received quick and friendly service. I recommend! read more

In Bay City for work and had time to kill. Decided to find a place to eat. Went in at about 3:30 so it was pretty slow...slow as in I was the only one in there at the time. The server was attentive and friendly. Meal came out pretty quick as one would assume without any customers. Food was really good. THEE absolute best sweet potato fries ever, phenomenal. Philly had really good flavor especially with the gravy. A little light on steak...still a decent amount. Overall, I would for sure go back and try their steaks and more dinner type meals. read more

Very cool, very homey atmosphere here. It's been around twenty years as I learned from my waitress. I had to ask. I couldn't tell if this place had been around for fifty years or for five. People go so all out on decor sometimes now just to make a place look like a lived in institution. Turns out I could have split the difference there; Gatsby's isn't old school yet but it's working on it and it already looks the part. I ordinarily wait for more than one visit to review a place but who knows when and if I'll find myself back in Bay City. I was on my way to visit some friends Up North ™ in Wolverine and had to get off the road for a bit and fill my belly. I just drove right to downtown Bay City figuring I'd find something and Gatsby's fit the bill perfectly. My steak was sizzling and delicious and my shrimp were a nice upcharge side. The Caesar salad was adequate, nothing special but nothing to complain about either. My side of mixed vegetables left something to be desired. Definitely had that frozen feel and nothing in the way of herbs and spices to liven them up. A minor bump in the road though, as the more substantial items in my meal were definitely satisfying. The steak wasn't the biggest but as far as 2024 prices, pretty reasonable for the money. Service was spot on. Gatsby's is a solid spot, I'd dare say Great and I wouldn't mind returning if I find myself on the shores of the Saginaw River not far from Saginaw Bay. read more

Gatzbys is a pretty good place to grab a bite to eat. It's got an old-school vibe to it. Long narrow restaurant with exposed brick walls, pretty cool old school bar. Just as a nice atmosphere. I have ate there several times and it's consistently pretty good. I would not say it's great, but there's not a lot of great options in the area, so it actually is one of the better places. I have not tried their steaks, but I've had a burger, the flounder Del Ray and a seabass special. All of them were pretty good. I've also tried the escargot and it's not bad either. The prices are reasonable and I feel like the food is good for what you pay. I don't feel they make good drinks I've had a few there and they're never really very good. Better to stick with a glass of wine or a beer if ordering an alcoholic beverage The service is pretty good. The wait staff that I've had have always been friendly and attentive. While I can't say I highly recommend it, I will absolutely say that if you're in downtown Bay City and want to grab a decent bite to eat, Gatsbys is a pretty good option. read more

I was delighted to find a restaurant that had a Vegan menu in addition to the usual menu. We celebrated our anniversary there! My husband had the whitefish sandwich and coleslaw and he raved about how good they were. I had the vegan fish sandwich and grilled vegetables and enjoyed them very much. We also loved the portabella appetizer with vegan ranch. We also found out that the chef prepares a special surprise vegan dish every Wednesday and wish we lived closer. Sad I couldn't order off the kids menu. Adult menus have so much food and when traveling it's hard to have leftovers. I couldn't even eat half my food and that was with friends helping. Headed up north for a long weekend and stopped in Bay City on the way up. Was pretty busy for a Friday night but really worth the wait. Service was excellent, the right balance of attentive without being too much in your business. Everything we had was really delicious. Salads were fresh, steaks were perfect, sides great. This place has hard-working and very helpful waitstaff. Unfortunately, this is the only thing that made a positive impression on me. Ordered the Cajun "blackened" salmon Caesar salad. While the salmon was fully cooked and seasoned with Cajun seasoning, it was not blackened in the very least. I did not grab a photo because at the time, I was satisfied with it just being simply seasoned. The biggest impression made upon me was the "grilled" wings. When I think of grilled, I think wood/gas/charcoal, or something with hot coals or an open flame. These grilled wings were deep fried for so long, that many of them had the moisture driven completely out of them as if they were scraped from the bottom of the fat fryer. Maybe it is just me, but thinking back on the non-blackened salmon and having near charred wings, it just plain tells me the chef/cook simply does not care about what he/she is sending out. What a shame. They put the waitstaff into an uncomfortable position to were when a complaint is made, they are the one's who feel at fault because they are the one's interacting with the customers. I was only impressed by the excellent service, but certainly not the presentation or quality of the food. read more

Adding this review mostly to get the keyword "vegetarian" added. This is a nice local place with plenty of options, including a complete vegan menu (it's stapled into the center of the regular menu). So vegetarians have options other than the pasta primavera or assembling a meal out of apps. Options include the pasta primavera, several "un-chicken" options (buffalo, sandwich, etc.), a faux pulled-pork, and a gyro plate (!). I had the gyro plate; the "meat" was a little dry but tasty and the sauce did not disappoint. Service was incredibly fast and friendly, and we were told everything is house-made. The ambience is nice, though it was dark enough my dinner companion used the flashlight on his phone to read the menu, so perhaps the lighting could be turned up a tad. Tried this for the first time last night and it was so-so. The crowd when we walked in was a lot of older folks which is fine but you get the sense they don't want you there. (I was with my girlfriend and a third queer person) The staff were super friendly but never offered me a drink refill and I would have gladly paid for 3 more. I tried the Kir and it was super tasty. We had the calamari appetizer and it was decent, but I wish it came with a better sauce instead of marinara. I had the mahi mahi with fries, a roll, and a Caesar salad. The fish was seasoned fabulously but was a bit dry and could have used more of the tomatoes on top. This is funny though because all my fries got soggy from the tomato juice leaking all over so they were pretty gross to eat. The roll was supposed to be a garlic bread but it was bland and I took one bite and passed. I loved the salad, not too much dressing and some fresh cheese which was good. They have nice decor and a convenient location but for what we had I think it was overpriced. I probably wouldn't go back unless I knew there were some changes made. read more

Referring to this place as seafood and steakhouse is highly inaccurate while they did have one steak offering and a couple seafood appetizers even the steak was not much of an offering. Now if you wanted a small steak bite for an affordable price of $15 and nice friendly service it is that. But even someone expecting a basic steak is probably going to have expected more. The steak didn't really have flavor aside from putting A1 on it, probably something I'd never do at a real steakhouse. Anyways nice little place but probably better for a burger than a steak would be my bet. Though my wife and me had the steak so not sure on that count.
