WHO: Party of 4
WHAT: Brunch
WHEN: Labor Day 2022
Terrible is an understatement. The hostess was unpleasant and appeared irritated that we were there for our reservation. Once seated, the waiter took at least 20 minutes to greet our table. Yet, was able to greet our neighboring table with minutes of them sitting down. Our drinks took 20 minutes to arrive. And often times, we had to consistently remind our server that we were still waiting for our drinks. Our server also came revisited our table and admitted that he forgot to write our order, yet we patently repeated the order. We figured, 'hey it's a holiday, let's be understanding.' Next, it took another 15 minutes to get a straw for our drinks. I had to leave my table, hustle around the bar to find at least one person to give us straws. I finally found a manager, and he was able to give us straws.
Next, our [simple] food order took 45 minutes to arrive. Our appetizers came at the same time as our entrees, and the apps were cold. The bartender and server took a very long time to refill our drinks. But hey, it was "busy."
THEN... once we paid [and tipped], we remained seated because we were waiting for our Uber. Note: the table next to ours received their food before our table, checked out and left. And we were curious about whether that table left a proper tip, given the subpar service. We looked at their receipt, and then sat back in our seats. Note: Our table is immediately next to that table.
NEXT, the server asked if we took the tip off the table. We calmly explained that we did NOT take anything from the table. Minutes later, the manager approaches our table and DID NOT ASK, yet accused our table of stealing the neighboring table's tip!! Silly of us to think that the manger was greeting our table to ask about our overall experience. Instead, he approached our table, with an iPad to replay footage of what he thought was proof of stealing. Prior, to replaying the security footage, he said "we saw you take the tip from the table?" WE WERE FLOORED! We had already explained to the server that nothing was taken. Especially because we watched the busboy clean the table, and we watched another staff/lady snatch the receipt/tip--after she noticed us reading the receipt. Calmly, we explained how it may appear suspicious, but we DID NOT TAKE anything. Collectively, we explained that we did read their receipt but we are NOT thieves, yet we are professionals and would never risk our lives/careers over $26.
NEXT, we our emptying our pockets/purses. Note: most of us are wearing halter-tops and skirts... attire with zero pockets. The manger then said, "you could've put the tip in your bra." By this time, we are offended and embarrassed because the entire restaurant is watching. At this time, there were 3 staff members towering over our table. We explained that we already paid and tipped our server, and rather than accuse us of stealing we wished they were this attentive when we needed assistance with our overall order/service/experience.
They never apologized. We left humiliated, and in tears. :(
I will be filing a lawsuit. I am extremely upset because I live in the neighborhood, I've frequented the Gatsby before, and the service was always passable, but this was by far the worst experience I've had at any DC restaurant. read more
