Today when my car died outside of the library I called the shop and Ryan assured me that if I towed it over they would take care of it so I did. I was immediately greeted by the staff and Ryan went straight to work. The problem was diagnosed and repaired in less than 2 hours. He was direct, accurate and incredibly helpful. I have a lot of empathy for the young guys working at this facility. Unfortunately, I was there until 6 PM because somebody quit and my car was pushed to the end of the line even though I arrived at 7:45 AM. Why is the owner not supervising these young technicians? They have very little experience and should be supervised by experienced in licensed mechanics. When I picked up my vehicle, the alignment seemed way off. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the work they performed, but they certainly took the two front rims and tires off the vehicle. All I can tell you is my steering wheel was jiggly back & forth driving over 60mph. As a result, I have to take my suv to a tire shop for a wheel alignment. Another $100 bucks. read more

Took my wife's prius here to have the head gasket replaced. The quote came in pretty reasonable, and Frank kept me in the loop with all of the issues that came up. The guys there did one heck of a job. The head was re-surfaced at a 3rd party shop that took an extra few days, and then we found out that the water pump had gone out as well. Turned out having the head gasket, water pump and thermostat replaced. Will be taking my other cars to them if I need any work done. We had a really good experience at Gateway Automotive. Gateway is the highest rated automotive repair shop on Yelp in our area. I took my 13' ML350 that I purchased last month to Gateway Automative to diagnose two minor leaks that I noticed last week; one under the hood and one under the middle of car. The Mercedes dealership did a diagnostic and gave me a quote over the phone but their pricing and timing was unrealistic. I wasn't too happy with the Mercedes dealership so I decided to support a local small business that had great reviews. The two repairs were done over the weekend and I picked up the car today. Everything looks great, no leaks and the car runs solid. The pricing was hands down very competitive. They inspected the car thoroughly and didn't find anything else wrong with it. I am thrilled to give Gateway Automotive my 5-star rating. On a recent trip to visit my father in Modesto, the serpentine belt of my father's car broke. I had to coordinate a tow and repair for him. This was during a very rainy Christmas week. I reviewed Yelp and messaged the business. I got a very quick response from Frank, the owner who indicated his shop would be happy to help. (I later found out Frank was actually on vacation but was still diligently responding to customer inquiries-such professionalism and commitment : ) ! My Lexus ES350 needed a major tune up and right strut repair. I used to do my service and repairs at the Lexus dealer but it became too expensive. They just did a tune up on the van, changed the cap and rotor, plugs and wires (which is hard work and takes a long time). They also changed the window motor and cleaned and lubed all those moving parts, AND they put a new door handle on the driver door, AND they got the air conditioner working, which had not been working at all for over a year, and it works Fantastic... All this for only $412 Labor + parts. PREVIOUS ENTRIES I got a complete Oil Change service, PLUS they plugged in their Check Engine Reader and told me why my check engine light was on!! And they tightened something, because the oil leak just about stopped!! They are great people. They also never tell you that your car needs repairs that it does not need. I once went to Jiffy Lube in Oakdale, CA for an oil change. With one car in front of me, it took three guys over an HOUR to just change my oil, and when done they handed me a LONG LIST of expensive repairs and replacements that my car did NOT need. I am fairly good when it comes to fixing things in my cars but this time I needed expert advice. As many of you know, it's hard to find a trustworthy mechanic for your cars. My son takes his Mini Cooper to the dealership for oil changes and those service appointments always come with a long list of other things that they (the dealership) recommend being fixed - usually totaling up to more that that little car is worth. Gateway is our go to when the dealership hits us with that long list. Gateway gives us an objective second opinion on everything. Sometimes they identify the same issues, sometimes they dismiss things the dealer said needed attention and sometimes they spot other things that the dealer didn't. They walk my son through what they see, explain the issue, how long he likely can get away without getting it fixed as well as what could happen if he just leaves it alone & doesn't fix it. They give us a reasonable quote on the parts and labor and they often come in at less than what they originally quoted. That is a refreshing change, right? VERY unprofessional! Stopped by last week, (5/9/24) to schedule an appointment to have a simple exhaust manifold leak and key fob programming done. I was told to return today, (Wednesday, 5/15/24), only to find they had no record of the appointment. I explained clearly that I would need my vehicle back at the end of day for family obligations tomorrow. No communication from them at all. Picked Gateway because it had rave reviews, which is pretty unusual for an auto-repair shop and honestly, all the 5-star reviews are 100% deserved. Frank was really communicative and gave me a list of different options and recommendations, just super honest throughout the whole process; I never felt like he was trying to upcharge or sell me on anything I didn't need. The technicians here are very knowledgeable when it comes to automobile. They are also fair when it comes to pricing their cost and labor, I would say they can be generous. I don't pretend to know anything about car engines. It's not my forte in life, & I'm totally ok w that. That's what a good mechanic is for. When my dad passed away, one of the things I inherited was his car. Long gone are the days when a "good" mechanic; one who possesses capability & integrity, was commonplace. That was the zeitgeist when my dad was young & an avid car buyer. Unfortunately, that is not the world we live in today. Since I already have Baby (my convertible), which I dote on & care for pretty meticulously (understatement), it's fair to say that my dad's car (I still call it that) gets neglected. That is, until something goes wrong. That something happened on the day before Christmas. I was driving my mom on a final grocery run before the festivities began. Forward to the cabin reeking of burnt rubber, w what appeared to be smoke (?!) rising from the hood. I don't need to tell you how disconcerting this scenario was. I'm a girly girl, & my mom is worse. In other words, we were clueless & basically helpless. So, I did the obvious thing & turned off the heat. That did the trick. My mom suggested we take it to the dealership. Isn't that cute? Even I know that you never take a car to the dealership when it is no longer under warranty. Unless of course, you have money to burn. You just need a good mechanic. I waited until after Christmas to tackle this problem. I know where to go in SF, but finding a Modesto mechanic was still a work in progress for me. Since Gateway had done a job for me before effortlessly, they became my go to. I called & explained the sad situation, & I was assured that they would figure it out. When I brought him (the Green Machine) in, they were slammed, so they had to keep him overnight. But first thing in the morning, just after 9 AM, I got a call from Frank telling me what the issue was. These guys are really good & fast at troubleshooting. No nonsense, no up-selling. Highly reccomend this shop. Owners and techs are great people. Took my Acadia AWD to have Frank and his guys take a look after putting 3 power steering pumps in myself. Put another pump in and worked awesome but ended up giving out. I called and Frank's wife said to come on in and I explained I had a very important appt in the bay area and they even leant me a car while it was being fixed. I know from my own experience that this job is more than complicated which is what took me to his shop. I know they spent way too much time on this vehicle thanks to the faulty autozone parts but Frank didnt bother charging for the labor to replace again, which is awesome. Turns out it wasnt my mechanical skill at fault it was just faulty products from autozone. All in all Frank is very transparent with his pricing and very honest. Guys from gateway did a great job. My ac went out on my car I first took it to the Chevy dealership and was "fixed" the first time but turned out to not be 2 weeks later. Took it back and got quoted over $1k to replace and ac line. Called these guys at gateway they found the part and gave me a quote within a day or 2 and a lower quote than the dam dealer!
