This review is overdue..my apologies. In September 2024 we were stranded 2 hours from home visiting our family. Nasser was amazing! I'm disabled and we are on a fixed income. He inspected our car and noticed that our ac compressor was very new but wasn't properly done by our previous mechanic. Took my Honda Ridgeline here because my oil was leaking. Instead of fixing the problem, THEY MADE IT SO MUCH WORSE. They used an after market screw on my oil pan, striping it causing a huge leak. I went back and they put another screw and stripped it to the point that now it needs an entire new pan. Costing $700. read more

My car wasn't starting and it was the day before a holiday. I called Honest Engine first thing in the morning to see if they could take me, and they said to bring the car in. The car arrived around 9:30 AM so I didn't know if they'd have enough time to complete the repair by the end of the day. After a half hour of diagnosis ($45) they determined that it was the starter, and also notified me that I needed to replace my cabin air filter, as it was black with filth after not being changed every 15,000 miles. I was thankful for the reminder of regular maintenance I had overlooked and gave them the go-ahead to add that repair onto my bill. They finished up around 2 PM, much quicker than I was anticipating. I expected to have to leave the car there another day because of the upcoming holiday. The total damage was $510, which seemed a little pricey for such a straightforward fix, but I'm not a mechanic so I didn't argue the details of the price. I recently moved to Modesto and hadn't found a trusted mechanic until coming across Honest Engine. I'll be using them for any future repairs I need. The worst part about a broken car is wondering who you can trust. I called and left a message late Friday not expecting a call back, I got one back pretty fast but I missed it. When I called on Monday I explained I thought it might be a head gasket. I was asked did I want it diagnosed or just go ahead and do the head gasket. I asked for a diagnosis. They are NOT HONEST at all. Some time ago I took my Oldsmobile van for a very simple repair. They kept my vehicle for two days. When I went there to pickup my vehicle they told me they fixed a lot things and charged me pretty high amount. Before I reached home (8 miles) the engine went off several times at the traffic light. I took it back to them. They told me " oh this is a new problem." And told me to leave the vehicle there so they could look at it later. This problem was not there before. My cars ac was not working, I thought it just needed a re-charge so I made an appt to bring the car in. After doing the diagnostic on it I found out it was the door inside that was broken and it would be a very complicated, long and expensive job to fix it. This shop is a joke! Horrible experience! Do not waste your time on this dishonest shop! Charged me for a diagnosis that wasn't even done! I brought in my car to have a starter swapped out. I was told I needed to do a diagnostic test but would not have tp pay for it as long as it was the starter that was bad. The vehicle was towed their because it would not start. Miraculously the car started right up as they pulled it in for their inspection. We told them we would come pick up the car. Once we got their they demanded we pay for a diagnostic test that wasn't even done! The boss yelled at my husband, verbally insulted us and threatened to close his shop with my car inside and force us to pay storage feeds on top of the diagnosis fee if we didn't pay. read more

Called in a week before to ask for a quote for a brake change. Told me to come in Monday (December 31st) at 8am. Got there at 8am and there was an employee JUST getting there. I asked him if he needed a minute to open up and said yes.... 25 minutes later I'm still waiting in the parking lot. I got no update on what was going on and no one approached me to get my info or anything. At that point I felt more of a" thorn in their side" then a customer. I felt NO sense of urgency from them to get my business. Don't tell me to be there at 8am and the shop isn't open. It's unprofessional and a complete waste of my time.... I'm sold on these guys... I swear to you that I have never walked away from a mechanic feeling like they told me the whole truth and nothing but.. I took my car in just to get a tune-up. Nasser whom I believe is the shop owner came to me and said..this car has issues. I knew I was having issues with my radiator flowing coolant through the engine but I hadn't realized it was leaking. Another mechanic had told me I needed a new radiator. $400 later and my car still over heats. I have to continually add coolant... Next they actually show me everything and explain everything to me. I wasn't charged for the work they did put in because Im a new customer and they want my business. They explained that the cost to fix what they could visibly see was wrong wasn't worth it. These guys are great..they told me to sell the car or simply ride it till it breaks... I'm glad someone actually told me the truth. I knew this wasn't worth a damn but to hear a mechanic tell you that they wouldn't spend another dime fixing this car...well that was priceless! You guys have my business form here on out. Well, here it is, the rave review I've been trying to write since this summer: These guys are TERRIFIC!! I'm a travel nurse, so I'm always new in town. This past summer I worked and lived in Modesto, and when the driver's window on my Saturn Vue wouldn't go back up, I thought I was screwed, not having a regular mechanic, and no one I knew had any fast ideas. So I cruised by the dealership (Alfred Matthews) where I was told it would take 5 days and "$500-something" to fix my car if I dropped it off two days later, the earliest they could fit me in. So I decided to give them a chance. Yes, the office is awkwardly located, but instead of waiting 5 days and paying over $500, I waited 2 hours while the mechanic diagnosed my problem and called around for parts. Then the owner came in, made a couple of calls, found my part, jumped in his car and picked it up himself, and I was on my way for $400+, MUCH FASTER AND CHEAPER!! Do not judge an auto repair place by its name! Honest engine is not so honest they were supposed to fix my overheating problem, supposedly they did and sent me on my way. Three days after I had my car on the way to Sac. airport to pick my children up the car overheated (in cold weather) an hour away from airport. After letting it cool down so I could start it and check the status, I realized at that point that my car was non-op. Ok, it been almost 8 months now since i did my brakes here. No apologies! My brakes are squeaking and very load i might add. Now, here is a few reasons why brakes can squeak, wear indicator, metal on metal and cheap pads. Well, i can scratch out the wear indicator and metal on metal. Cheap price. CHEAP PARTS! They replaced my front and rear brake pads and rotors on my high performance sedan. I made the mistake of not specifying Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) car parts. So when I drive my car, the brakes squeak and vibrate ALL THE TIME. I thought for the longest time that my front end was falling apart. When I went to another mechanic. His assessment was that the brake pads were of the same quality as what you buy at Pep Boys or Kragen, which is to say not very good. I won't do that again. The name is perfect, Honest Engine. I took my 2011 Ford Taurus into Nasser and his crew. I've only had my car for about 5 months. I noticed when I took off from a brief stop, my steering wheel would jerk to the right, really hard but quick. After about a week of this, I went to Honest Engine. Thank God I did! The bolt holding the right side strut had almost come completely off! Nasser said if I had gone a few more miles, my tire would've went bye, bye! I have a 5 year old daughter too, so that scared me to death. He tightened the bolt for me and checked on a few other minor things on the car but charged me next to nothing for the diagnose and work.
