LADIES BEWARE! Dishonest and performs unnecessary work at high mark-ups. After bringing in my vehicle due to squeaky breaks I was told I needed all 4 rotors replaced. He said (Ithink his name was Dave) the rotors were really bad and they must have been making a lot of noise. I told him they really hadn't. Dave said he would replace all 4 rotors and Pads for $700 and that he was giving me a break. He scared me enough that I told him to go ahead and do the work but to save me the rotors to look at. When I got to his shop he told me he would show me the rotors after I paid. I paid for the work and he brought me out what he said was a front rotor and a rear rotor. both had very little ware and were thick. When I showed my disapproval Dave told me "you should really change your rotors every time you change your break pads". I know that was major BS. I took one rotor with me to get the opinion of other mechanics. I was told by 2 separate mechanics that the rotor was fine. They would have just put pads on, at the very most they would have turned the rotor and not replace it. I am out $700 for a job that did not need to be done. During a pandemic where every cent I make is desperately needed this unscrupulous person does an unnecessary job that I had to pay with money I was saving for Christmas and emergencies. Next week one of the mechanics insisted that I take the car in so that a visual inspection can be done on the rotors to make sure he put new rotors on. I will update this if I find I was given anything other than brand new premium rotors. Run away from this place !! read more

I drive over 2 hours for any auto issues I have (Chevy, Ford, and my daughters Mitsubishi). They take good care of all our cars and are worth the drive. After reading reviews, I decided to give this place a try. I was having trouble getting my car to start after it turned off on me as I was just getting off the freeway. Turns out that my oil was very low. They were honest with what needed to get done when I asked for a diagnosis. They didn't try to scam me out of unnecessary maintenance like other places in the past that I've been to. They had great customer service. Very reasonable price for my oil change. Coming back from a sales trip to Fresno my starter went out in Modesto after a quick pit stop. Stranded with no tools I was forced to have it towed and quickly searched Yelp to find Sunset Automotive. Knowing a decent amount of cars i'm always hesitant with shops because some will try and put you threw the ringer - "Yeah sir, your kanutin valve and turn signal fluid is bad, that'll be about $1,200 and won't be ready till Thanksgiving.." Not Sunset, this place is legit. Matt greeted me at the counter and was super friendly and understanding. Their shop rate is inexpensive for the amount of knowledge they have. This shop is AMAZING. They are concise, honest and reliable. I've been to ALOT of repair shops in my day, but once I found this place, I was done! They will do what you ask, alert you to any issues they may discover, but also advise whether you should fix it now, or whether it can wait. They go the extra mile to do the job and get it right should it be a pesky problem. I had a rebuilt engine put in my car and had to go back numerous times to get the cruise control right, but they never gave up! (By the way, all those extra visits...no charge! In fact, they gave me a handful of free oil changes to make up for it, no matter that it wasn't due to any fault of theirs). I would give them a zero stars if I could. Been coming here for some time, but they let me down. I referred my brother to them. They used his truck to "load test it" (after putting a coil in????). So that's what they say. When he picked it up it had a trailer hitch on it that wasn't there when he left it. When my brother picked it up, he noticed a boat at the shop had been moved and his truck had 37 THIRTY SEVEN additional miles on it. Before I wrote this, I went to hear for myself what happened. They said they had to tow a boat around to test the load and to drive it enough to make sure the check engine light wouldn't come on. Really??? The man at the counter said he's sorry. i am a car guy have 2 classic cars i built and no one has worked on my cars for 50+ years. my timing belt on my mits eclipse and i was not able to do repairs due to surgery so i shopped around for a shop. they did a fast and professional job. showed me all the old parts and brought the job in as estimated. before they started they recommended doing the water pump at the same time while it was apart, which shows they help you before you need to spend more money. i have sent my daughter and a friend there and they both feel as i do, honest great place with no worries about your repair and very fairly priced. use this shop for your repairs as an alternative to the very expensive dealerships. mike repairs made in march 2016. reposted oct 2018: update! the timing belt tensioner is rattling after 24k, and it should be ok for well over 60k. they have a 12 month or 12k guarantee. so now the test comes for this shop, most likely cause is miss adjusted tensioner or bad part. i take it in on monday and we will see how they handle it. i will post back monday pm and let you know. mike update: they past the test with flying colors 5 stars again. took the car in and they fixed it even a year after the warranty expired and only charged me half of what it should have been. great shop great people. read more

Just took my 2003 Sequoia for a 120k service to Sunset Auto. Not only did they take care of everything included in the service but also replaced the rear brakes and rotors, installed a new automatic antenna, serviced the AC and fixed the rear trunk window that wasn't working...all for less than what Modesto Toyota quoted me just for the 120k service! They were fast too; dropped the vehicle off and got it back the next day and Dillon kept me updated the entire time - they never did anything without calling me first. My Sequoia is running perfect now and I feel very safe to take it on the long drive for my upcoming trip to Las Vegas - thank you Sunset, impeccable job!!! read more
